Rare Bob

According to Pete

Viking Blond

After Robert Koren, he’s a rare one that City could do with more of. Stewart’s House would have been a good pick until it was pulled out! Killyglen also a good pick, as it should be in it’s usual amber and black.

An obvious one for Hull FC fans, According to Pete, y’know, after Peter Gentle. Though one thing that may put off Hull FC fans is, it usually runs in the colours red and white The Midnight Club wears black and white.

Hull KR’s Grand National connection was the hardest to make. No Al’s, Vic’s, Bob’s or Roberto’s, we went for the next best thing - Viking Blond, the connection being it reminded us of Michael Dobson - so there.

as the attractive former Premier League side who have a good chance of getting re-promoted, but as a team who has fallen short twice. Falling short has never seemed to stop Cardiff’s ambition, but that brought about them almost going out of business, a As we go into the final month of the route we very much doubt the Allams season, it is hard to say if City can step up to the plate, or again fall short like last are willing to take, or should even think about taking. season. But can falling short again be a bad thing, or seen as a step towards Nick Barmby talks about remaining more improvement next season? ‘humble’ which is a very good way of going about things, as it keeps the club Looking at a team like Cardiff, who grounded and shuns the ‘billy big boots’ have fallen short many seasons on the

bounce, it looks like doing so can instill a mentality in the club that, that is exactly what will happen season after season, we do not want that here. It remains to be seen whether Cardiff will make the play-offs with a fresh approach under new manager Malky MacKay, but at the moment it is looking like Cardiff may tail off at the business end of the season, just as City seem to be doing. At the same time though, Cardiff are still within a shout of the play-offs, just as we are. This will be the clubs second season outside the Premier League, going into the third. Some players may not see us

types who ruin a clubs spirit, but at the same time we don’t want to see ‘humble’ translate into ‘small time’ - we don’t want to come across as a Barnsley or a Watford, simply happy with reaching mid-table, we want to still be seen as a club with ambition, which is why to not become a Cardiff and instead become a Swansea, we’re simply a Scott Sinclair type signing away from being promotion contenders. All Swansea lacked the season before going up was one major attacking outlet who could pull them up by the bootstraps and win them the game with a moment of magic.

Well, last month I wrote about how I was looking forward to March, how I couldn’t wait for a footie-packed ‘mad March’ after a dull ‘3 game only’ February - come back February, all is forgiven! How wrong was I to look forward to the March we’ve just had? I doubt anybody would call me unfair for stating it has been dire. After going 5 games without conceading a goal, March has seen us ship 9 goals in 8 games, which to be honest isn’t actually that bad, but when your forwards produce only 7 goals in a month, you do the maths - it just doesn’t work, not to mention one of those 7 was an own goal. With 3 of those 8 games resulting in back-to-back defeats, it makes it all the more harder to swallow. People were moaning throughout February that we weren’t scoring enough and were finishing too many games at 0-0. It’s now starting to feel like 0-0 for nearly a full month was good, as it beats watching the current performances of what can only be described as Groundhog Day.

City are tiring, falling away from the leaders and about to be caught by the chasing pack! The way we’re playing at the moment, if City was a race horse, I think we’d be pulled up! So come on Nicky Barmby, it’s time for no more Mr.Niceguy and time to start cracking the whip, otherwise I don’t see this horse reaching the finishing line.

We go into April with 6 games left to go and we’re not out of this yet. I finished last month’s piece with ‘there’s still a lot of games to go believe!!!’ Well, I can’t say I have as much belief in us reaching the play offs as I did at the end of last month, because it’s been another month of not addressing our problems, but despite that, we’re still within a few points of being in the mix at the end of the season, which is one of the main things which has added to the frustration and the feeling of Groundhog Day as every week throughout March that we failed to win, our rivals either lost or drew too, meaning chance after chance of missed opportunities. We need As we’re going into April, the month to start playing more brutally, with of the Grand National (for which passion and effort. How those at the we’re finally at an away game this bottom of the table manage to show season, so we don’t have to hear so much fight to get above, or stay Steve Jordan bellowing out the name above the line of the relegation zone, of the race winner at the top of his while teams struggle to fight as much voice, spoiling it for all of us who to get above, or stay above the line have recorded it at home to watch of the play-off places, is just when we get in!), I’ve decided I’m baffling. With Robert Koren missing going to use some horse racing puns for a few weeks now, it’s time for us in my piece... so, where to start? to try out a new way of playing, as Well, as we go into the final furlong 4-2-3-1 was set out to play to our (of the season), it looks to be that advantage; it’s now a disadvantage.

T H E V I E W F R O M E 2

CHAMPIONSHIP RIVALS UPDATES The Championship is a funny old division isn’t it? Look at Coventry, as an average over the season, just like City, they don’t let in many and don’t score many, but we’re at opposite ends of the table - the difference is that while we draw or get a narrow win, their games have been mostly narrow defeats with only a goal in it; 1-0s, 2-1s, 3-2s etc... it just goes to show how bad our season could have been and the vicious nature of this division, which is exactly what West Ham have found out over the past month. Despite having spent

bullish big spending sprees and shows you can still achieve things on a tight budget in this division. Another team that have gone on a surge up the league that we have been very impressed with are Brighton. We held them to two 0-0 draws this season, both lively games in which we matched them, but since we played them at the KC on February 22nd, they’ve not looked back since, which makes two teams that have shown City what could have been. We talked about Jason Roberts at Reading, but Sam Vokes has added a new dimension to Brighton - two big hold up players brought in and both teams shoot up the table - coincidence? It was just what we needed. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Brighton actually pip someone to promotion via the play-off’s.

large amounts on players in the summer and then forking out big money again in January, they have managed to find themselves being overtaken by Southampton again and also by Reading, who have gone on a tremendous run since City beat them 1-0 on January 21st, which again highlights the nature of this league and shows where City could have been now. Jason Roberts has been a brilliant signing for them though, which could see them promoted. Despite losing more players than adding to last seasons squad, they’re actually doing better this season, which makes a mockery of West Ham’s

the danger men - april After another month of football sees new challenges throughout the month. Once again we bring you our ‘the danger men’ feature and give you an insight into who we feel the Tigers need to be more alert about than others amongst the opposition in upcoming games. DARIUS HENDERSON:

One of the top scorers in the league, in a struggling Millwall side (despite having a good goal scoring record as a team). Darius Henderson is a tall striker, who is good in the air and good at using his strength to hold up the ball. Andy Keogh and Harry Kane (on loan from Tottenham) that are a danger too.

CRAIG DAVIES:

Into double figures in his first season in the Championship - probably Barnsley’s best signing this season. Tall, strong, pacey and knows where the goal is, he has made the step up from League Two look easy. Not forgetting the returning player rule, we have both Scott Wiseman and Nathan Doyle to watch.

MARVIN EMNES:

GARATH MCCLEARY:

ADAM HAMMILL:

DEXTER BLACKSTOCK:

MARK YEATES:

CARLTON COLE:

This one is a case of; beware former players coming back to bite us on the arse! - as Mark Yeates so nearly did at the KC Stadium this season. He always seems to raise his game against us and can be a tricky winger when he wants to be, and he usually wants to be against us. As we said; beware!

Carlton Cole came on in the second half against us at the KC Stadium and tore us apart. He is the type of striker we need and the type of striker we have failed to deal with very well this season. Both James Chester and Jack Hobbs will have to use every once of energy to keep him under wraps in this one.

TROY DEENEY:

KEVIN NOLAN:

Well on his way to finishing the season as a 20+ goals per season striker. Strength, finishing, aerial ability, a bit of pace - Emnes has it all for the Championship - he’s Middlesbrough’s taller, higher strike rate version of Aaron McLean as he can play as the lone striker or out wide in a front three.

A player we were reportedly interested in, but never heard anything back about our bid. It was rumoured we were offered Hammill on loan once the loan window had opened and we decided to say ‘No Thanks’. Beware decisions coming back to bite us on the arse! Barry Robson’s long shots need to be watched closely this time too.

Deeney now has 7 goals (as of 20/3/12) to his name, Watford’s top scorer now Marvin Sordell has left. He has since become Watford’s main attacking outlet and hasn’t done too badly. We remember him well from the game at the KC - this lad seemed to look fat, for a footballer anyway, but carried his weight well and is fast.

The fact we scored no goals against Leeds recently and this lad scored four goals against them, as well as helping Forest to getting another 3 goals in the game says quite a lot about him and why he’s a player we need to watch out for especially as his confidence will be high and he’ll be hungry for more.

Dexter Blackstock has lived up to the heights of being QPR’s top scorer a few seasons ago, but that is mainly due to being plagued by injuries. Now fit and getting up to speed with the Championship again, he’ll definitely be one to watch, especially with Nottingham Forest fighting for survival.

Should have been sent off at the KC and didn’t like the way our fans gave him stick - no doubt he’ll be out to shut us up early doors at Upton Park. There is no denying that West Ham have many dangerous outlets all over the field, but you can’t deny the danger that Kevin Nolan possesses, or his quality on and off the ball.

HULL KR I write prior to the Castleford game but so far the month of March has brought mixed fortunes for Rovers. The Robins played Widnes on March 4 in what were atrocious arctic conditions and just 3 weeks later it was warm sunshine for the visit of Huddersfield. And if the March weather offered sharp contrasts then so did the performances and results of Rovers. In fairness Rovers have been pretty impressive for the most part but the undoubted low was the surprising capitulation against Bradford. After hitting Bradford like a whirlwind for around 20 minutes it all turned sour with what ended up a depressing and disappointing display. It tested the belief of many Rovers fans such was the way the defence got worse and worse as the game progressed. Rovers needed to quickly bounce back but a trip to Catalans followed by the visit of league leaders Huddersfield had many fans

fearing the worst. The team however responded superbly. We headed off to France with yet more injuries this time Jake Webster & Craig

Hall joining the casualty list. With young Liam Salter having to be drafted in for his debut and Josh Hodgson covering in the second row the team had a distinctly makeshift look about it. Few gave Rovers any chance and although Catalans did eventually win the game it was a close run thing and a tremendous committed performance was on show.

Indeed but for one or two contentious decisions from referee Thaler the Robins would have been heading home with a win. Coach Sandercock seemed unimpressed with the officials and Neil Hudgell even less so - his ‘conversation’

with Mr. Thaler after the match resulting in the RFL launching an inquiry . Our esteemed chairman is no doubt able to represent himself adequately and really, haven’t the RFL got anything better to worry about? And so onto the Huddersfield game and if Bradford was the season low

how it was. Last month I tipped Josh Hodgson for international recognition and have already been proved right now I am saying that Scott Taylor will sooner rather than later become a full England regular. But this was no one man show and Paea, Clinton, Watts and Wheeldon all had the Giants on the back foot. With Dobson at his brilliant best and Murrell giving his best off half display since his NL1 days Rovers in the end completely dominated the Huddersfield team. Amazing really that this was done with half a team of first choice players sat in the stands. Rovers have had the very toughest of starts both in terms of injuries and also the fixture list which after only 8 games has seen Rovers face 5 of last years top 6. Later on with the long term injured available and a potentially easier run of fixtures Rovers season could really take off IMO because I believe this is the most exciting and talented team Rovers have had in Super League. By His Bobness.

then this was the high. The display from the Rovers pack was awesome not just from one or 2 but all of them. We haven’t seen go forward like that against quality opponents since our introduction to Super League. Scott Taylor was the best of the lot which is really saying something what a player he is turning out to be. The trade press observed that it was uplifting to see this promising young player come of age and that is

two defeats St Helens were looking to get their season back on track. St Helens looked to be in control at 10-4 ahead against the Black and Whites. However the game turned when

Hull FC started the Month of March with a game against the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, the Black and Whites narrowly defeated Wakefield 14-10 to deny former coach Richard Agar a triumphant return to the KC Stadium. Tries from Kirk Yeaman and Will Sharp put the Black and Whites well in front before the Wildcats rallied something of a comeback with late touchdowns by Ben Cockayne and substitute Kyle Wood, setting up a nervy finale. But, in woeful weather conditions, a penalty and a conversion from secondrower Danny Tickle earlier in the game ultimately proved the difference to maintain Hull’s unbeaten home record. Next up was the Black and Whites first visit to Langtree park the new home of St Helens. On the back of a draw and

Jordan Turner raced the length of the field beating the St Helens pair of Ade Gardner and Michael Shenton for pace, this all came about after a sloppy Josh Perry pass which helped the visitors pull clear to win. Three Danny Tickle penalties had more or less clinched it for Hull before Wade McKinnon touched down a Richard Horne grubber to win 22-10 and send the Saints fans in the 14,875 crowd home unhappy.

The Black and Whites then welcomed the visit of the new team in Super League, the Widnes Vikings. Danny

sent a message to the top four they may have extra competition this year in the form of Peter Gentle’s side after only one defeat so far against the Salford City Reds.

Next up was a trip to the Probiz Coliseum to face a Castleford Tigers team who came into the game on the black of six straight defeats, however it has not been an easy start for the Tigers especially with the tragic news that coach Ian Millward’s son had passed Tickle scored four tries and nine goals away. THE PREVIEW

KISSER PREVIEWS PINK FRIDAY : ROMAN RELOADED The curvy American hip-hopstress is back

Nicki Minaj is back with some more super bass, and returns with her second album ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded’ following her debut album; ‘Pink Friday’. Pink Friday offered the eccentric hip-hopstress the chance to showcase her talents (in more ways than one) with singles like Super Bass, Fly, Did it on’em and Girls Fall Like Dominoes, including collaborations with the likes of; Eminem, Will.i.Am, Rihanna and Kanye West. It looks like the curvy American is looking to follow on from where she left off, having since done a collaboration with superstar DJ and producer David Guetta for single ‘Turn Me On’ which will feature on Pink Friday:Roman Reloaded’s deluxe edition release, which was an anthemic dance tune, of the type we’ve come to know, love and expect, blasting out from the Balearics. Other collaborations continue on the new record with the likes of Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Nas and Drake. Songs to feature on the new record include: Starships,

which is a bouncy, pop-tastic dance-orientated tune with such a big drop, it hits you like the big dipper and will have people on dancefloors shouting ‘Higher than a Motherfucker!’. Roman Reloaded, a song with Lil Wayne is very raw in it’s sound, think Willow’s ‘whip my hair’ but more basic - definitely not as radio friendly, it’s more Radio 1Xtra than Viking FM. Roman Holiday sounds like someone English singing the chorus. It’s an electronic, drum-orientated pop song. Stupid Hoe is a crazy tune, one MIA would be proud of, but more mainstream. Think if Marilyn Manson was a black woman, with big boobs and a ghetto booty and made hiphop, you’d then probably get somewhere near Nicki Minaj on this tune and it’s accompanying video. Roman Moscow (deluxe edition) sounds like someone rapping over Hull Fair - no joke!

thirteen 1 - game of the month Not only is this latest instalment to the SSX franchise a great game, it manages to capture the ‘feel’ of slope carving brilliantly, emulating the kind of euphoria that only travelling down a mountain at insane speeds can provide. SSX takes no prisoners, serving up relentless speed and tricky terrains across 28 mountains for you to carve your snowboarding name into. The courses have been meticulously designed, each feeling varied and offering their own unique challenges. Being an SSX game, realism takes a back seat, so expect a massive middle finger to be flipped at the very foundations of physics and normality. SSX isn’t about simply making your way down a snowy white slope; this is about jumping a massive chasm, doing a trick on a helicopter, then deploying a wing suit before landing and grinding on the great wall of China! This is a hard game to master, but persevere and you’ll be greeted with some of the most rewarding, down right exhilarating gameplay to feature in a sports game

this generation. You use the left stick to steer and the right stick (or face buttons, if you prefer) to pull off tricks, with R2 giving you a speed boost or adding cool bits of flair to your tricks when you’re in the air. Pull off enough tricks without using your boost and you’ll enter Tricky mode, where you get unlimited boost and the ability to perform more audacious tricks – break-dancing on the board in mid-air, anyone? There are three gameplay modes; Tricky, where the highest scoring trickster wins; Race, which is a race to the finish line; and Deadly Descent, which are tight, harrowing mountains that require skill and accuracy to get down alive. Each mode requires a different mindset if you want to come out on top, adding spades of replayability to every course. The experience points you earn during play can be cashed in on stat modifying items, such as new boards, outfits, and special equipment like ice picks, wing suits and armour. What’s truly astonishing about SSX is

- SSX (2012) the sheer amount of content there is to explore. Beyond the main singleplayer mode (which has an admittedly lame story, not that story is in anyway important to an SSX game), it’s extremely disappointing that there’s no local multiplayer option, but the game does a good job of making up for this with a Ghost system – a visible manifestation of your opponents run down the slope - which effectively lets you compete against anybody at any time you wish. This can be done in an Explore mode that lets you tackle each mountain for fun, and through Global Events that let you compete with your friends – or the entire world – in tournaments for prize pots of experience points. The game is graphically astounding; smooth textures and plenty of realistic snow kicking up behind your board as you flip and spin across the mountains. The soundtrack is thumping too, and the added ability to use your own songs in the game is an absolute winner.

This is a glorious return for the SSX franchise. There’s a bit of item unbalancing in the World Tour campaign that renders a lot of purchases useless, and the missing local multiplayer is almost unforgiveable, but with so much to do and explore, SSX has the capacity to keep most gamers happy for months to come. Highly recommended.

PLATFORM EXPOS 2012 The annual digital gaming and entertainment event returns to Hull. We’ve heard quite a lot about the Platform Expos from previous events, having intended to check them out in the past, we felt it would make a good talking point for this month’s event review. Despite having heard plenty about Platform in the past, we weren’t sure what to expect once we got there. We spoke to a few avid gamers who claimed that they

felt the event was a bit sparse, especially for the price. We were fortunate enough to have visited the GMa (Games Museum - amsterdam) a few weeks earlier, so had that to make comparisons against. Although those avid gamers may be right in the sense that the event seemed a little pretence by boasting a good line-up and the build up of

expectations of a lively bustling event, of which it seemed to lack slightly - but compared to the GMa, this event was a massive hit as far as we were concerned, in fact we’d go as far as saying that if what the GMa had in comparison meant it could trade as a full time museum, then this event certainly could too! And why not? The gaming industry is massive, people love games. Why not take up two units in the

Fruit Market and add to Hull’s tourist offering? One unit could be games from retro to new releases like this event showcased, while the other unit could act as a games lecture theatre. We attended a talk at Platform 2012 showcasing the new Tom Clancy game of which we felt was a great touch to the event - a bit of exclusivity goes a long way to adding a unique

touch to the event. The competitions were a good laugh (I was beaten to winning a cuddly monkey on a very active Rabbids game for Xbox Kinnect) and came within 3 seconds of catching the leader of the Forza Motorsports 4 competition, driving a Ford Escort mk2 round the Top Gear track! The best thing about this event is it allows gamers to test new gaming

experiences out without having to fork out for them, then realising it’s not your thing. We found out we’re big fans of Batman:Arkham City and loved what we saw from a quick Fifa Street game. We also now know the PSvita’s graphics are amazing for a handheld device, but the controls are awkward and overly fiddly. We wouldn’t have known without Platform.

WHITEFRIARGATE IMPROVEMENTS UPDATE

You’re probably wondering about the random picture above, but there is good reasoning for it. One of our contributors; @dazzar86 on Twitter has recently had a meeting with Hull City Council regarding the improvements to Whitefriargate that have been planned. So far it seems that a roof will be a ‘non-starter’ and plans have been looked at to create a new market day in the city centre, despite attempts to re-establish ones in the past having failed. @dazzar86 tells us the council couldn’t understand why, when people wanted a market back, they didn’t use it when brought back. The reponse being advertising was an obvious one. Other ideas include stripping back the shops original facades, adding to the historic features of the street. @dazzar86 said he proposed a couple of

radical ideas that the council said they may look into. One idea he suggested was to create an archway welcoming people to the Whitefriargate district/Old Town, as there is no formal line to tell you, you are now entering the old town. He suggested a more inspiring idea to create a topiary replica of Beverley Gate as the archway, but the council said it would more likely be like something pictured above. His other idea is to turn Whitefriargate into what is believed would be the first ‘Continental Quarter’ in the UK, using Hull’s close links with Holland, Belgium and Denmark to invite stores from those countries to open up along Whitefriargate, creating something unique to Hull that people would travel from other cities to come and visit. We hope to be eating our Dutch pancakes and Belgian waffles soon!

Croydon

THE RIVER PROJECT COULD BE BACK ON TRACK AGAIN

Some of you longer serving members of the Kisser readership may remember back in August that we had heard from a good source that The River project, planned for the space opposite The Deep, was still in the pipeline. Well, we have now heard further news from the excellent @Hulldevelopment on Twitter, who has revealed that, depending on the future state of the economy, construction could take place once things settle down. Proof that the people behind the project still have plans in their thoughts comes in the form of a change of idea. It’s the same blueprint, but according to @Hulldevelopment, those in charge of the project have opted to change the plan for The River from being based on a tropical rainforest valley, into a plan for it to be based on a traditional British limestone valley. The people

in charge believe the new plan would compliment what is on offer at The Deep better and be a more cost effective project. The change to a traditional British limestone valley would see visitors taken on a tour from the source of the water, watch it form into a river until it reaches the estuary, where animals such as seals would be on show. We’d expect an informative, educational side to the theme in the way of talking about glaciers, glacial movements and the ice age, along with some knowledge linked in locally that ties in with the theme such as things about the Yorkshire Wolds, The Humber Gap, The Humber Lake and The Humberhead Levels. The Wykeland Group who own the land are set to spend £800,000 on preparing the dry dock and fixing the gates. It has been suggested that The River would generate £28 million within 5 years.
