HULL CITY JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW SPECIAL Welcome to our January transfer window special. It’s generally quite difficult to pull an issue together regarding transfer dealings, as once you’ve got an article wrote, the whole situation regarding that player has changed - but we’ve gone ahead and done it - so we hope you appreciate it, have a good read and take in the info we can give you.

.

.

It’s an exciting time at Hull City at the moment and we felt it all the more reason to put together a transfer window miniissue. We hope the deals that have been rumoured come to fruition and the clubs form continues under Nicky ‘one of our own’ Barmby! In this issue we have all the transfer news you could possibly want along with views from ex-Tiger Stan McEwan. This magazine contains adult content and is for people aged 16 and over. Not all the comments made are that of Kisser Magazine and we will not be held responsible for any content you may disagree with. Views expressed are those of the writers not necessarily those of the magazine. All content and rights; Kisser Magazine Ltd.

With the January transfer window upon us, the questions on every Cit fans minds are: can we keep hold of our star players and will we rebuf all attempts to prize them away from us?

price of what it would cost to prize him away from the KC Stadium. Let’s take a look at two players with ‘potential’ that Aston Villa signed up over the past few years - Fabien Delph cost Villa £6million, rising to £9 million with add-ons, this being a player that had not played higher than League One. Ashley Young bought from Watford Outgoing Concerns, the concerns of the for £8million, rising to £10 million with addfans throughout the January transfer ons, and was then sold on for a further window regarding those players nobody £8million to Manchester United. Stewart’s wishes to see leave. We take a look at the pace, potential and age should put him in players that may attract interest and the the Ashley Young bracket - granted, Young possibility of them leaving, amongst other had played in the Premier League for a little growing concerns. while, but Stewart only needs a little more We think it is safe to say that interest has been shown in Cameron Stewart from Leicester. We’re sure many fans, ourselves included, are worried that Leicester will actually stop p*ssing about and put their money where their mouth is. Some fans have been stating that £2million or £3million would be good business, mainly because we only paid £300k for Stewart. First of all, it would likely cost a lot more than £300k to find another Stewart to replace him with, players like him at £300k are hidden gems that aren’t readily available. Secondly, Cameron Stewart’s potential alone adds big money onto the

experience to be worth a large transfer fee, so we should stop the small-club mentality with regards to selling players for lesser fees than they are worth. Thankfully James Chester has expressed a desire to remain at the Tigers despite our sources telling us he and Nigel Pearson had a close bond. The fact Chester has started to improve on his recent performances again is great to see, many saying Pearson’s exit looked to have affected Chester the most. The club believe if any ‘starting 11’ player is to leave, it is most likely to be Robert Koren, due to interest from foreign clubs yet again.

So, it’s safe to say that none of us would be happy to see any of our current crop of players leave, especially when we’re in such a great position to push for a playoff place, if not better. With the league being so tight, keeping hold of our main players could be the fine line between promotion contenders and a mid-table finish. However, we believe the club have drawn up an emergency shortlist should any of our players end up leaving beyond the clubs control. The players the club are worried

about losing the most are Stewart, Chester and Koren, as the players other clubs have expressed an interest in. Robert Koren is the player the club believe the most likely of the 3 that could leave, with a shortlist topped by George Boyd of Peterborough should he go. Boyd has been key to the likes of Mackail-Smith, McLean and Tomlin bagging lots of goals over the past few years with his play-making skills sat just behind a front two. Should he prove too expensive, Barmby feels Olofinjana could do a decent job.

Stan McEwan

6 Having being a footballer himself, Stan McEwan knows just what it can be like as a footballer at this time of year as the January transfer merry-go-round gets into full swing. We stop by to chat with Stan about what goes on in a footballers mind during a transfer window and to talk about what areas of the field he feels need strengthening after a busy December...

FOOTIE FEATURE: THE STAN MCEWAN COLUMN The month of January is all about the January Transfer Window, just like this magazine. We wanted to get an insight into football transfer dealings from a former players perspective. Stan McEwan chats to us and first tells us his thoughts on the return of Vito Mannone. “I think it’s an excellent move. There had been a couple of hiccups with the last few keepers, so Mannone coming in is great, as he’s a quality keeper - he’s proved it before with us and personally, I think he has a better understanding with the centre halves”. There has been quite a lot of rumours regarding incoming players - Stan gives us his insight into what he believes we will see for the remainder of Januray. “From what Nick has said, he’s wanting the right kind of players in who will fit his system and are right for the club, which means he’s playing his cards close to his chest. I think he has a lot of faith in the players he already has, but I think we may see 1 or 2 other additions to add to the squad”. The calibre of player which is brought into a club often says a lot about their ambitions for the rest of the season, as Stan give his opinions on the current rumours. “Well for a start, there is Michael Turner, as well all know, he’s a quality player, who has more experience now, but I doubt he’ll be looking to step down a division. Sam Vokes - I’ve not heard anything on that front, to be honest, but the lad is a good forward. Adam Hammill is one I have heard, but the day I heard it, he started for Wolves and played very well in the game for them, so like Turner, I’m not sure he’ll be looking to drop a division, but if we have a fee accepted, if anyone can persuade someone to join Hull City then it is Nicky Barmby. Ricardo Fuller has been rumoured, but I can’t see it. Nick likes to play football on the deck and it would mean having to change the

style of play. Even bringing him as an extra option means having to change the style of play, as I doubt he’d want to drop down a division to sit on the bench, which means having to start him, which could upset the ethos of the way Nick likes to see his side play. January has already brought about advances from former boss Nigel Pearson for star winger Cameron Stewart, with many calling their advances a joke Stan McEwan give us his take on the situation. “I don’t think they’re playing games, they’ve obviously offered money to prompt a response, but we don’t want a lad like him leaving us. He’s a quality player and from what I;ve seen and heard, there has been no indication that he wants to leave. He looks committed to Hull City ” Talk turns to what is needed to add to what the Tigers currently have in the side “I think another frontman is needed. I know we have brought in Josh King, but from what I have been told, he isn’t 100% fit and will need a few games to get up to speed. I’ve heard he’s very quick though, so I’d like to see him partnered with McLean or Fryatt, with the former being someone I have been impressed with in recent weeks - I think the centre is his position, he’s looked far more dangerous in there and needs to be given more of a chance there. I also think Cairney could be like a new signing to the side, as from the cup game, it looks like Barmby may be able to get the best out of him, and if he can do that, he’ll certainly add to the squad for the rest of the season”. As well as incomings, outgoings can also be a big part of any transfer window. “McShane has gone to Palace, which I see as a good club for him. He deserves a good club and his chance to play some football. You only need to read the programme notes to see who the other players say is the best in training, with McShane’s name usually cropping up.

He deserves credit, he always gives 100%, so you can’t fault the lad for that and he’s a credit to himself. He’s been out of the team for a while now and never let his head drop and when called upon recently, despite not having had any recent game time, still stepped up and put in a lot of effort”. As well as McShane leaving, there has been reported interest in Stewart, Chester, McLean and Koren. Stan gives us his views on interest in our first teamers. “Interest from other clubs simply means we’re doing well and they’re being noticed, so it’s a positive really. Koren has got us out of trouble more than once, and feel he can often do more, but he can always pop up with a goal at any moment, so feel as long as we have a good defensive midfield, it allows for a flair player, and that is what Robert Koren is. He’d be a good buy for anyone, but I can’t see Barmby wanting to see any of the current side leave. If we don’t have to sell, that’s great for Barmby. We find ourselves in a fortunate position, as the owners seem willing to back Nick in moving the club forward. With new players coming back from injuries and loans, it sees even more additions to the current squad, as Stan explains how it can have a positive effect. “Garcia coming back is great as it’s like a new player coming into the squad, he’s a

genuine player and will be a good head to have in amongst the young lads in the dressing room. Olofinjana looks to be lacking match fitness still and it’s a long time since we’ve properly seen him play, but we’ll need all the players we have for the run in. One name that fails to go away regarding transfer specualtion is Billy Sharp, as Stan McEwan comments “There’s always a price for each player and the Allams are very shrewed. I’m not actually sure if Nick wants him, as he has faith in the team he has, but there must be other clubs interested for him to turn down Leicester like that. It’s quiet at our end, so possible interest may be there, you never know. Finally we talk about what is needed to sustain a top 6 finish “There isn’t a lot between us and 14/15th, lose a few and you can soon drop down the league. There isn’t much wrong, but possibly an experienced centre-half to guide the younger lads at the back is what is needed to steady the ship and help teach Chester and Hobbs, just like Wayne Brown did with Michael Turner. We’ve looked a bit out of our shape recently. Against Peterborough, they could have had 2 or 3 in the first few minutes. We were all over the place. A centre-half needs to be a good pairing and once or twice a game recently we’ve been getting caught square. Hobbs and Chester seem like quiet lads, not very commanding.

Stan McEwan

Vito ‘Stallone’ Mannone! He’s more Italian than Al Capone He likes the seaside and a flake in his cone, Vito ‘Stallone’ Mannone. Yes, that’s right, Vito Mannone is back with The Tigers. There was much talk of Steve Harper coming in from Newcastle, but due to Newcastle wanting him to remain un-cup tied, the move didn’t materialise. There were quite a few other goalkeepers on a shortlist, but with Peter Gulacsi and Adriano Basso both sidelined with injuries, Barmby had to act quick. A shortlist including Dorus De Vries, Steve Harper, Chris Kirkland and Tomasz Kuszczak proved pointless and Vito Mannone was called upon once again from Arsenal. Having played for The Gunners this season in the Champions League, Mannone has since seen few opportunities. Mannone will be remembered for his first spell with City last season and will be welcomed back by the Tiger Nation despite his last loan spell coming to an unhappy end after letting in four goals in the first half of our home game against Middlesbrough. Vito’s time at City started off on much happier terms though, which saw his place in the side coincide with a

rise up the table and a push for the play-offs in the offing. Sadly injuries cut Mannone’s game time down greatly and will probably prove City fans biggest worry, as a lack of cover is evident. However, City have brought in Trevor Carson on loan from Sunderland to allow time for one of the injured keepers to regain fitness. Mannone’s biggest plus points are his sharp distribution, which will create counter-attacking breaks with our pacey players and more importantly, his vocals, which we’ve lacked with Gulacsi in goal and will hopefully prove a calming influence on the back four.

There have been many various rumours regarding all the possible new signings that Nick Barmby wants to make this January, but the position which people have not heard many rumours about is in defence. There has been a lot of talk regarding a return to City for Michael Turner, a rumour which has failed to go

away despite Barmby rubbishing the rumours himself. We believe the possibility may have been discussed, but was put to bed due to the amount of wages Turner is currently on at Sunderland. A more likely option we have heard is that Barmby may simply put his faith in Liam Cooper to provide defensive back-up for the rest of the season and look for a new centre-back in the summer, with Anthony Gerrard likely to be a target considering the amount of time he has spent on the bench at Cardiff, and the fact he’ll be a free agent come the summer.

Despite already having a large number of players available for midfield positions, this is the area in which the Hull-born City boss is looking to strengthen most and with some of the names that have appeared on Barmby’s wish-list, it is certain to see him stick to his rules of only looking to bring in players who will improve us. We’re quite surprised by the high calibre of player City are looking to bring into positions already filled by players doing well in those areas

of the field. With Paul McKenna and Corry Evans playing really well in the centre of the park and Cameron Stewart back in the side after injury, with options from the bench including Robbie Brady who has had his loan extended from Manchester United, as well as the returning Richard Garcia and Seyi Olofinjana, it has come as a bit of a shock to see City show an interest in so many midfielders. Hopefully the club’s interest in more midfielders doesn’t amount to any of the current crop of first-teamers leaving. Talk has reached boiling point that Hull City’s main targets this January included Mark Davies at Bolton, but that seems to have dropped off due to his re-emergence in relegation threatened Bolton’s starting XI. Alternatives include; Jacob Mellis, Tommy Smith and Somen Tchoyi (who only has 6 months remaining on his contract at West Brom). Wingers seem to be the order of the day for Barmby, of which will fit well into his 5-man attacking midfield. As mentioned, Robbie Brady has extended his stay and other wide man targets include Adam Hammill as a main target and Michael Kightly, should Hammill’s move not materialise, with Ryo Miyaichi and Ben Marshall as other possibles.

Ahh, the most exciting of positions when it comes to incoming transfers, usually anyway. We’ve been finding it difficult to find the back of the net recently, so getting this transfer right is a must. Many fans have been crying out for the club to bid for Billy Sharp, a man who seems to score for fun (barring a spell at Sheff Utd, ha!), but

unless there is a major cover up going on, the club don’t look to be trying to bring in the player the fans are desperate to see in black and amber - possibly to do with the reported £3million price tag. Josh King has joined on loan till the end of the season - a very fast player who can play upfront and on the wing, though is quite injury prone. Sam Vokes is another reported target with Barmby said to be a big fan of his style of play. Ricardo Fuller is also rumoured for a possible loan.

OUTGO

OINGS

OUTGOINGS Now for the less interesting part outgoings. With 4 or 5 new signings set to come in, and with quite a large squad considering a few players have just come back from injury as well, it’s safe to say the club will be looking to offload those that aren’t in Nick Barmby’s plans and look to lower the wage bill slightly. It’s been well documented that Paul McShane is looking for a move away to boost his chances of being picked for the Republic of Ireland Euro 2012 squad, and that move has now come about with McShane heading South on loan to Crystal Palace for a month. City will be hoping he impresses and interest Palace into taking McShane full-time, which would remove his high wages from the wage bill. Many may not be confident of that happening, but people seem to have forgotten that McShane had a successful

loan spell at Barnsley last season, so that could work in his favour, as could his versatility, being able to play at centreback or right-back. He didn’t do himself many favours recently against Burnley though. Other players that the club are looking to offload include James Harper, who has been courted by Charlton and Hartlepool and would do a decent job for a League One side. Martin Pusic is apparently set to be released by the club - perhaps he’ll stay in the area and look to join the

Doncaster ‘resurrectmycareer.com’ Rovers? Dele Adebola is also said to be surplus to requirements at the KC with reported interest from a quartet of League One sides. City will also look to said some of the younger players out on loan again, having seen the loans of Jamie Devitt, Mark Cullen and Will Atkinson end due to losing their places in the side of the teams they were on loan to. Liam Cooper’s loan was also cut short for similar reasons, but as mentioned, will be used as defensive back-up instead of being loaned out.

That time is upon us again, the January transfer window! It’s usually an exciting time for us fans with regards to eagerness for news, something that is only matched when we’re waiting to see what our new kit will look like, who a new sponsor will be and if a scruffy cockney dickhead is still trying to weasel some money out of our club. Yes, rumours have surfaced again that Jimmy Bullard is again seeking some more money from us. Many had previously stated that he should be entitled to it as ‘it isn’t his fault the club offered him such a high wage’. Granted, but also, what other job do you know of were you can do absolutely nothing and still remain in the job? He has taken Hull City for a ride for far too long - I hope he gets laughed out of the court room. I’m sure the ‘cheeky chappie’ will love that, being laughed at. On another issue, I’m liking what Barmby is doing and the rumours that have circulated regarding incomings seem to be of a good ilk. One of my main worries though is that there seems to be rumours about a high number of incomings, which either means a lot of outgoings or a heck of a lot of competition for places. We all know competition for places is healthy in any squad, as it keeps players on their toes, but my main concern is that of making too many changes to a team already doing so well. As with any new manager, Barmby

will obviously want to put a bit of his own stamp on the side, but when he first took on the caretaker role, he insisted he wanted to simply keep things going as they were, as the club were already on the right tracks. Disrupting a settled side may hinder our progression, rather than help it. Not only could it unsettle some players, who would drop to the bench, but a lot of changes to the starting eleven would mean the side would have to gel together again, just as we’ve finally started to understand each others style of play. At a point were we’re sat in sixth place in the league, it is a turning point in the season - the point were teams reload their guns and go back into battle and we need to come back fighting with full ammo. I’m sure by the end of Januray, we shall see who has come to the fight with AK47s and who has ended up with water pistols. In other words, in another random analogy, we’ve got ourselves a nice pizza with all the cheese and ham on top, we just need to fine tune it with a few pieces of pineapple for the perfect formula - stick too much on it and it’ll go soggy. Another concern is that of Leicester City being complete arseholes! Thankfully our owners love to piss off arseholes, so by the end of January, we should have kept hold of Cameron Stewart, along with the likes of James Chester and any other player Nigel ‘boring’ Pearson wishes to be knocked back for. Even if Stewart was interested, I’d tell him to wait till the summer and see where we are as a club come May.

RIVALS TARGETS It’s the January transfer window and we take a look at City’s main promotion rivals targets for strengthening their squads....

SOUTHAMPTON:

The Saints are in for Tadanari Lee, a Japanese striker and are said to be looking to bring in a second striker, a goalkeeper, central midfielder and are also reportedly interested in Jimmy Kebe, as one of many clubs currently interested in his services. Talk Gary Hooper is a target, Celtic not budging.

BLACKPOOL:

Ian ‘Ollie’ Holloway loves to take a misfit from out in the cold and turn them into a form player. Jason Puncheon from Southampton, Rob Hulse from QPR and Stephen Quinn from Sheffield United are all reported targets for The Tangerines. John Fleck on loan from Glasgow Rangers is also possible.

WEST HAM:

LEEDS UNITED:

CARDIFF CITY:

DERBY COUNTY:

MIDDLESBROUGH:

BURNLEY:

READING:

LEICESTER CITY:

The side that were apparently in serious money trouble should they be relegated from the Premier League, yet they’ve been one of the biggest spenders and aren’t looking to slow down now. It’s reported that West Ham want to bring in ANOTHER striker, despite having about 8 already at the club.

Cardiff City are flying high and are one of the sides that have spent a humble amount on recruits this season, after many seasons of over-spending. Malky MacKay has done a great job at the Welsh side with some great recruitments. It’s rumoured he is interested in a striker and a defender, said to be Wes Morgan of Forest.

Middlesbrough are another team in the hunt for a striker and have brought in Lukas Jutkiewicz, but are also said to be looking to save Ishmael Miller from his nightmare of a time at Nottingham Forest. Boro will be looking to hold on to their stars too, with many courting interest, especially Rhys Williams.

Reading are set to lose one of their big name players in Jimmy Kebe, so will be looking to fill the void left by him. Reading are short on funds and are likely to try fill the void with a loan from a Premier League side or a cheap deal on a winger from the lower leagues. The Royals are also said to be interested in Ryan Bertrand on loan.

Leeds have already moved fast in the window to take Tottenham’s young starlet Andros Townsend on loan, as well as making the loan of Pugh into a permanent deal. There has been plenty of talk regarding Alan Smith returning to the club in which he started his career and are after Sammy Clingan.

Derby look to be clearing out the players they don’t need and possibly bringing in one or two players to strengthen in certain areas. It is rumoured they are looking to take a midfielder in, likely to be a loan and a striker to help support Theo Robinson, with Clough looking at Matt Tubbs.

Eddie Howe seems to have a similar transfer policy to The Tigers in that they aim for young, talented British players. It is rumoured The Clarets will put in a bid for Bournemouth’s Marc Pugh and aim to sign Carlise’s Tom Taiwo. They will also hope to fend off interest in their top players.

Mr. Boring Money-bags Pearson is said to be interested in signing every player he possibly can in the hope Leicester will start playing better football. Billy Sharp, Jimmy Kebe and City’s Cameron Stewart are said to be Pearson’s main targets, but so far, none of them have shown an interest to join him in the Midlands.

games

thirteen 1 - game review - footba Football Manager season is upon us! Gentlemen, prepare to put your social life on the transfer list. Yup, it’s time to put our pub banter tactics to the test and show that we really do have what it takes to manage our favourite football club. SI Games have made numerous changes to Football Manager 12 when compared to FM11, and while they may not all be obvious at first, they are both abundant and brilliant. There’s a wealth of new features in this iteration that players of the previous games are sure to appreciate, with over 800 additions and tweaks when compared to last year’s FM11. As usual, Football Manager thrusts into the role of gaffer of the club of your choice and it is up to you to balance the tactics, transfer policy, board expectations, and the wages of your prima donna players - all while keeping the fans happy and getting vital results in the league. The depth is so grand that, by the end of your first 3 months, you’ll genuinely begin to appreciate the difficulties of a top flight manager...only without the grey hair…or monogrammed training jacket. A lot of changes have been made to the

transfer systems. If you consider yourself to be a bit of a Ferguson (or a Wenger, if you prefer French players), the changes are nothing short of brilliant. The player search screens have a much greater level of detail than before, similar to that available on FM Genie Scout - the much loved unofficial scouting assistant program for FM games. Contract negotiations have been massively overhauled too, allowing more control over than ever before over the individual clauses that can make or break a transfer. You have more control over your youth players too, with each of them having an assessment at the end of the season – or you can just scrap them altogether if their too much of a strain on your resources. A major change comes in the way of a “tone” system, which allows you to realistically choose exactly how you speak with your players. While the instructions themselves largely remain the same as before, making your message with an aggressive, assertive, passionate, calm, cautious, or reluctant tone adds a real distinction to your action. Cautiously telling your team, “You can do this,” could drop Jack

all manager 2012 Hobbs motivation, allowing McCormack and co. to tear your defence apart. Whereas passionately saying, “You can do this!” instead could get Hobbs, Rosenior and Fryatt thoroughly pumped, resulting in a satisfying 4-3 aggregate win over Leeds (we speak from experience!). The 3D match engine remains the same in all major aspects but has been made noticeably smoother, resulting in a much tenser touchline affair, and you can even customise touchline shouts now to really put yourself in the dugout during match day. Customisable shouts allow you to replicate complicated Benitez-style hand signals in just a couple of clicks! SI games have put a tremendous amount of time into streamlining the GUI, making every screen more efficient, and there’s far more information on every screen than ever before. Despite already being the best in its genre, there has been no touchline complacency here. Fans of the series be warned, you WILL lose your social lives to this game – we recommend rolling around on the floor a few times and feigning injury whenever somebody tries to pull you away.
