Foreword As far as I recall, I met Horihide at the New York City Tattoo Convention in 2001. Skilled tattoo artists from all over the world gather to display their craft at this annual event held in May at the Roseland Ballroom near Times Square in Manhattan. Horihide was invited as a special guest artist from Japan to demonstrate his traditional tebori technique. Dipping his brush into the sumi ink he had prepared in his suzuri ink stone, which is generally used for Japanese calligraphy, he drew the outlines using his nomi tattooing tool. A huge crowd had congregated around his booth, but being quite the upstart and rather ignorant at the time I boldly walked up to him and showed him the tattoo I had done on a customer. Surprisingly enough and with nothing but genuine sincerity he told me he thought that it was wonderful. He didn’t judge the quality of the work I had shown him, but just displayed true appreciation for my tattooing. From that moment I have been a fan of the man, his personality and what he represents. Several years later we met again in Tokyo and some time after that, while travelling with Henk Schiffmacher and friends, I was privileged to visit him in his hometown, Gifu. Each time we met he was willing to converse with me without end. I remember him calling himself a ‘tattoo junkie’ in one of our conversations. Eventually I became relaxed around him and I guess we developed what you could call a friendship. This pretty much sums up my personal description of Kazuo Oguri, the man known as sensei, or master, Gifu Horihide. Horihide visited the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum in 2012. And to honour his 81 years on this planet we decided to publish a book dedicated to his life and achievements. Yushi ‘Horikichi’ Takei
