Exactly 20 years ago well-know artist Julie Oduber united many artists, poets, and musicians in order to honor Padú Lampe on his 80th birthday. At this time it was decided to found the Foundation for Cultural Promotion Honoring Padú Lampe (Padú Lampe Foundation). Its aim is to stimulate cultural activity through music, literature and the visual arts. In order to do this it’s necessary to preserve all which is important to our cultural legacy. It is important to know where one comes from in order to take the correct direction to go towards. Therefore we initiated the extensive project to digitalize all of Padú’s documents, pictures and music. This resulted in recruiting experts with professional musical knowledge, as Padú recorded his compositions on music cassettes. These need to be transcribed to sheet music, a complicated task since Padú produced more than 300 cassettes! Next to his music, Padú wrote several interesting books and painted many pictures about different themes. Who better to write a book about Padú’s art than Stan Kuiperi, a renown artist, wellknown for his critical writing and analytical mind, an

art educator and member of the Padú Lampe Foundation. Stan Kuiperi has been studying and inventarizing Padú’s art for several years. The result is a beautiful book for the art lover, student, and visitor giving a sublime introduction and description of the several styles and periods of Padú’s art work. The Padú Lampe Foundation thanks Stan Kuiperi for an excellent job of studying and transcribing in such a way as to delight a large and varied group of readers. Thank you! Now that the digitalization process is being executed, two books by Padú have been translated to Papiamento, the process of sheet music writing is on its way, and the Padú art book project is completed, it’s time to announce the Foundation’s project number 4: The creation of the Padú del Caribe Museum at Padú’s residence. The main goal is to create a museum focused on culture: Local music, documents, digitalized music and a space for artists in residence, to promote culture at different levels and disciplines with Padú as inspiration and as central figure in the museum. This book will focus entirely on Padú’s painting career which has never yet received the full attention it deserved. This is mainly due to the overwhelming popularity of Padú’s other careers, those of musician, singer and composer, as well as writer in a lesser sense. The time has now come, at the occasion of his Centennial celebration in 2020, to rightfully put his complete body of artworks in the spotlight through this publication, the first to review the meaning of Padú’s work for cultural development in Aruba.

As a young, self-taught artist, Padú developed his own painterly technique and style, experimenting with paint, color, form and composition until mastering the medium to his satisfaction. He achieved this through his energetic creativity, his visual intelligence, and his ability to take on challenges with disciplined determinination. At the young age of 16, Padú showed his advanced painting technique and his interest in his island, its culture and its history. At only 19, he participated in the 1939 New York World’s Fair IBM exhibition ‘Contemporary Art of 79 countries’, the first time ever that Aruban art was exhibited internationally. In 1955 he exhibited in the ALCOA Steamship-sponsored ‘Fine Art of the Caribbean’ exhibition in New York, earning a regional prize. In 1963 he was the first to succesfully exhibit in the recently opened Aruba Caribbean Hotel. These impressive early and mid-career periods produced the most technically superior artworks of his total body of work in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. We can only imagine how far he would have made it professionally in the world at this point. His destiny, however, was to stay in Aruba to enrichen the lives of

Aside from all this, he married Daisy Croes, established a family, started his own company and later worked for the ALM airlines until his retirement, all the while also composing, performing and recording his way to an even more impressive and productive musical career. Yet he always strived to expand his horizons as a creative in all three of his areas of interest. In the visual arts, he continued to paint extensively showing creative interest in landscapes, typical Aruban houses, seaside views, flora and fauna, family and friends, celebrities, and so forth. He immortalized his beloved island as if knowing that one day all of it would be transformed or made to disappear. His curiosity knew no limits, he never let later technical challenges hinder him, and he always shared all of his work with the community. With time,and past his 60th year, logically Padú’s technique diminished. Technique and themes, however, were not as essential anymore for him at this later point of life. The mere fact that he was still painting and still passionately continuing his artistic process, was an act of celebratory hommage to the creative human spirit. In the 1980’s he retired and dedicated his time fully to taking care of his beloved wife. In the 1990s, at 70+ years, he restarted all his activities with renewed energy and an ever-present youthful enthousiasm, and in 2008 he even underwent double eye surgery to be able to paint again. Soon after, he produced — by sheer will of spirit — one of his largest and last

collections, and enjoyed every exhibition event, often singing to music played for him by his loyal band of musicians. At the beginning of the 2010–2020 decade, at 90+ years, he finally laid down his brushes for the last time and stopped painting. Today in the year 2020, one hundred years after his birth, Padú is a national icon in Aruban culture, beloved by his people and well-respected internationally. For his persistent dedication to his cultural output throughout his life, he received several official honors and many popular awards. Some of the most honorable are: The title ‘Tata di Cultura’ (conferred by the Aruban government), ‘Ridder — and — Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau’ (Dutch Royalty decorations), the ‘Zilveren Anjer’ (highest Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds decoration for cultural achievements), and from Venezuela an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Zulia, the Presidential ‘Orden de Andrés Bello’ medal, and a ‘Piano de Oro’ by the RCA Victor recording company. His priceless legacy to Aruba and beyond is twofold. Firstly, a lasting artistic treasure of artworks, music and literature, hopefully soon to be housed in his own Museo Padú del Caribe. Secondly, a personal example of profound gratitude for life’s blessings and of respect for human dignity and human values. May both serve as lasting inspiration for all future generations! Biografia Padú Lampe Biography Padú Lampe Padú’s parents, Mr. Henri Everard Lampe and Mrs. Ida Lampe-Croes, lived, like many other families at the time, on the main street of Oranjestad which was then called ‘Nassaustraat’. Their beautiful Latin American neo-baroque-style residence was named ‘Mother’s Home’ in honor of Padú’s mother. His musical family was an early introduction to the arts for the young Padú. In 1946, at 26 years and right after his military service, he married his beloved Daisy Croes and moved to Beatrixstreet 10, where they lived on permanently. This residency is now the present home of a large collection of paintings by Padú, more than 600 books read by Padú, and 300 music cassettes on which Padú recorded his musical compositions. The Padú Lampe Foundation has plans to convert this residency in a future museum.

After working at his own electrical company for 16 years, Padú switched to the ALM Airline company for 14 years. During this time he continuously composed music, performed and recorded under the name ‘Padú del Caribe, bestowed upon him for the popularity of his albums in the region. In 1980 he retired and dedicated all his time to taking care of his wife Daisy for almost 15 years. After her passing in 1994, he restarted his artistic activities with renewed energy. He composed new music, recorded several CD’s and performed at sold-out concerts, painted and exhibited large painting collections with youthful energy, well into the first decade of the new millennium. Due to the long trayectory of Padú’s life and his many activities, this book includes a time-line with more biographical details.

Ta un echo cu e paisahenan di añanan ’30 y ’40 tecnicamente ta mihor pinta y tabatin un tamaño mas grandi. Na aña 1940 atrobe e hoben Padú a sobresali den un exposicion colectivo na San Nicolas, ricibiendo elogio di un critico di arte pa su obra ‘Adam and Eve in Paradise’, un cuadro perdi. Su cuadro di aña 1941, ‘Paisahe na Rooi Manonchi’ (pag. 18) ta hopi conoci y ta inclui den e buki ‘Arte’ (A.Martis y J. Smit). Durante 7 decada Padú a sigi pinta su paisahenan solea, hopi biaha marca pa e Divi-divi, Hooiberg, cadushi y barancanan, y un shelo blauw nubla. The Aruban ‘cunucu’ landscape may be the theme closest to Padú’s heart and most represented in his art starting from the young age of 18 years. Padú obviously experienced the Aruban landscape as a fundamental aspect of the island identity. He saw his natural environment as an extension of himself and as a painterly challenge. Painting the landscape he could create his own world mirroring Divine creation while practicing his observational and decision-making skills. It is a fact that his early, large landscapes from the late 1930’s and 1940’s were technically his best work and earned him his earliest successesboth at home and internationally. His 1936 landscape (page 17) at 16 years is currently his oldest known painting. In 1939, at age 19, he painted a large aloe landscape (page 24)

which was sold to buyers in the USA and brought back to Aruba by the author after 60 years. This painting is painted on both sides of the canvas. In 1939 he also participated in the New York World’s Fair IBM art exhibit, with another Aruban landscape (page 20) which the author recently traced back after 80 years to publish in this book. This showing of an Aruban painting internationally was a historic feat by

Padú. His ‘Landscape at Rooi Manonchi’ (1941) (page 18) is included in the first book about Aruban and Antillean art by local art historians A. Martis / J. Smit. Padú continued to paint his sunny landscapes for over 7 more decades. With age his formats became smaller, and his painting technique became more simple and expressionistic as can often be seen in the clouds, vegetation and general forms.
