Shiny happy people First word Ross MacKay You know the time and space when you’re out riding and a song pops into your head and stays? The most recent case for me was the REM song Shiny happy people, from the 1991 (was it THAT long ago?) album Out of Time. I was in the United States riding Harley-Davidson’s 2014 line-up and booming along Colorado’s spectacular Interstate 70 between Denver and Beaver Creek when in it popped and stayed . . . so that I was either singing or humming ‘Shiny happy people laughing, shiny happy people holding hands.’ for pretty much the rest of the trip. I’ve chronicled my experiences at the 110th anniversary bash elsewhere in the mag this month but want to add personal thoughts (which didn’t really fit into the feature) here. AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE Although just getting to the United States was an altogether more time-consuming experience (way more bureaucratic than my last trip 10 years ago) this time around, once I was there it was an absolute pleasure. The trip was all a bit of rush – these magazine gigs always are when you’ve got a monthly deadline – but just being in the US of A, was a rush. Let alone spending three full days immersed in all things Harley-Davidson at the 110th Anniversary celebrations in Milwaukee. As a journalist I get to ride all sorts of bikes, and to the utter frustration of some of my more hidebound friends, I still – after all these years – find it hard to favour one marque or even genre over another. Because the history of HarleyDavidson is very much the history

of the motorcycle, however, it’s hard not to buy into the Harley hype, particularly when you are in Milwaukee. GREAT VIBE What I particularly like about Harley-Davidson’s five-year ‘big’ birthday celebration events is that there’s such a great and I have to say ‘clean’ vibe to them. Here in New Zealand, no matter where you go, someone will always eventually overstep the mark, either by getting too drunk, too angry (and yes the two are usually related) or just too stroppy. My experience over three solid days and nights at the 110 year anniversary event could not have been more different. Whether it was in a packed part-open-air stadium at the Summerfest grounds watching Aerosmith, the day I spent mesmerised by the marque’s history and inevitable ups and downs at the Harley-Davidson Museum, or simply wandering around Milwaukee’s revitalised ‘historic quarter’ taking in the sights, I had an absolute ball Sure, outside my ken there were no doubt issues. But the overall bonhomie associated with the 110 year celebrations was both a joy to behold and an absolute pleasure to be a part off. HOME AGAIN The only problem, now that I’m back home, of course, is that every time I see or hear something which reminds me of my time in Milwaukee…you guessed it…I start humming that ‘b…dy’ song again. ‘Shiny, happy people laughing, shiny happy people holding hands…. ■
