Be safe, be seen
Speaking strictly personally here I’m no great fan of Facebook or Twitter. I use both but find that neither really suits my needs. Both, obviously, have their place, however. No more so than recently when Fairfax NZ news reporter Maryanne Twentyman did what reporters have been doing for eons – went looking for an angle on what I’d imagine was a slow news day. The subject was motorcycle accidents, the angle that so-called ‘born-again bikers’ were proving more crash-prone than their younger counterparts and in her story Maryanne quoted long-time Waikato region riding instructor Ward Fisher. Nothing wrong with that, Ward’s a good bloke with years of experiencetraining riders young and old. BORN-AGAIN BIKERS Problem was Ward did what I’m sure most of us (I know I’ve done it) have done when we’ve been asked our opinion on motorcycle accidents, he referred to ‘statistics’ which apparently showed that (and I quote directly from the story which can be found at www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/8322005/Born-again-bikesproving-crash-prone) ‘middle-aged born-again riders’, many returning after more than 20 years away from motorbikes, were indeed finding themselves in strife on the roads.’ And this is where it got interesting. ‘Not so,” replied reader Simon Gotlieb via Twitter and re-published as a Reader Report by Fairfax NZ. Though quick to acknowledge that with a recent increase in the number of motorcycles on our roads there has been a commensurate increase in the ‘absolute’ number of motorcycle related accidents, Gotlieb neatly debunked the widely accepted notion that this is somehow the fault of ‘born-again bikers.’ And he wasn’t just opening his mouth and flapping his lips like so many who

Rather he used Lincoln University professor Charles Lamb’s ground-breaking 2010 paper, ‘Casual Factors in Multiple Accidents Involving Motorcycles: An Analysis of New Zealand 2008 Accident Data’ which you can read here (http://grt club.blogtown.co.nz/ files/2010/05/Causal-Factors-in-MVMAs-V5-HAND-OUT-19-May-2010. pdf) In it Professor Lamb shows that though the average age of motorcyclists in New Zealand has risen from 22 in 1980 to 33 in 2005, a study in 2007 showed that the average age of motorcyclists involved in multiple vehicle accidents here is 37 with a mode of just 21 – as Gotlieb says, ‘hardly a candidate for the ‘bornagain’ biker tag’. Yes I know poring through an academic report is not something many of us would want to do on a sunny summer afternoon, but there’s no doubt about it, the paper makes compelling - and in this case definitive - reading. BE SAFE, BE SEEN According to it, for instance, 75% of all accidents in the US involving motorcycles involve another vehicle in a ‘fail to yield’ situation. And studies there and in Europe have found that in between 50 and 67% of these cases it was the other person (i.e. not the rider of the motorcycle) who was at fault. Another study in 2008 also noted that ‘in 70% of the MVMS (multiple vehicle motorcycle accidents) where the other driver was clearly at fault, they were unaware of the presence of the motorcycle.’ So there you go. Like Ward, I was of the opinion that ‘born-again-bikers’ were more accident -prone than first-timers. Perhaps they are. But as Professor Lamb’s report suggests, that might be the sidebar, not the main story! ■
