Bikie threat? First word Ross MacKay Been thinking about heading to Brisbane or the GC to take advantage of warmer weather, higher wages and better living conditions? If you’re into your Harleys, or even if you just like getting out on your Japanese sports, touring or trail biking with a bunch of mates, Queensland’s the last place you want to go right now. It is because – incredible as it may seem in this day and age – the state government has just passed a swag of new ‘anti bikie gang’ laws. Never mind that the bills only got through the state legislature after a marathon session which ended at 3.00am one morning, they are now law and actually name 26 motorcycle-based ‘criminal organisations’ including the Bandidos, Finks and Mongols. RESTRICTS THE MOVEMENTS The laws restrict the movements and meetings of members and associates and increases the minimum sentences for any crimes they might be charged with and found guilty of. Included in the onslaught are; • extra powers for the police in dealing with ‘gangs’ • the provision of a ‘bikie-only’ prison north of Brisbane • mandatory sentences of 15 years for serious crimes as part of gang activity (on top of the normal penalty), and... • motorcycles to be crushed as punishment for certain crimes. Fortunately there has been a significant reaction to the Queensland laws across Australia with the Australian Human Rights Commission and civil libertarians objecting strongly. To truly outlaw – because that is what the government is doing – clubs and membership of clubs is, in my view, a step too far and contrary to the fundamental freedoms that we should enjoy in this country.” KR webmaster Big Dave re-located to his native Australia two years ago now and says from Brisbane that the law change is already having an effect. But probably not the one the politicians wanted. “You just don’t want to go for a ride any more. Too much hassle.” He said. What the new laws have done, you see, is focused police attention on all motorcycle riders, not just socalled ‘bikies’. And from what the various motorcycle blogs and magazines in Australia are reporting, more ordinary, everyday motorcycle riders are being pulled over for ‘licence checks’ etc. HOW BIZARRE From this side of the Tasman it all seems faintly bizarre, a throwback, if you like to the days (of my youth) when legislation here (and it’s probably still in the statutes) stipulated that if more than 10 of you were riding ‘as a group’ you had to have a police escort. In theory these are more enlightened times, as evidenced by the fact that as Professor Cowdery, QC, pointed out such draconian legislation would never have made it through the state parliaments of New South Wales or Victoria because in those states basic human rights are entrenched in law. They’re not in Queensland though…with the inevitable jackbooted, knee-jerk result. ■

The good folk at Dold Industries sent us the new chain care system from Tirox to try. It’s a complete clean and lube system, consisting of two aerosols. First up is the Tirox Chain Cleaner. According to the can it’s formulated to efficiently remove heavy residues and deposits from chains, sprockets, rims and swing arms, without being harmful to O, X and Z ring chains. It comes with a clever little spiral brush to scrub the chain clean with, after the cleaner has been left to soak. The brush was a little tricky to get on, but the bristles are nice and stiff, so it should stand up to a bit of abuse and seems to do a pretty good job of scraping the crud off. Next up is the Tirox Synthetic Chain Wax. There are a few dry lubes available now, but according to Tirox, this is a revolution in chain wax technology that will keep your chain and sprockets the cleanest they have ever been, by using a proprietary two-stage process to
infuse the synthetic base with PTFE nano particles. This super-charged molecule virtually eliminates friction, which drastically improves chain and sprocket life, as well as overall drive train efficiency. That sounds pretty good to us. It does say to apply to a clean, warm chain for best results, so I’d say that keeping it handy and using both cans straight after a ride will be the best bet. The can of lube even comes with a pair of black rubber gloves, perfect for keeping your hands clean while you lube your… um, chain. ■
