Welcome to the August issue of Kiwi Rider. It didn’t take long. Mid-winter has come and gone already. That means it’s only a downhill run until the biking season is in full swing again. And it’s not like we’ve not had any biking action to keep us entertained. MotoGp, World Superbikes and the Isle of Man TT have been captivating so far. The best bit about the TT this year? That has to be Kiwi Bruce Anstey taking the outright lap record at the tortuous, not to mention sometimes deadly, road circuit in the middle of the Irish Sea. While he didn’t take top spot, the 212.913km/h

(132.298mph) average lap speed is nothing short of astonishing. KR contributor Dave Britten marshalled at this year’s event and his experience is on page 58. Talking of Kiwis overseas, Levi Sherwood took the Japanese round of the RedBull X-Fighters by storm and grabbed first place with a stunning display of FMX skills. Reader Paul Marsh took the trip to Osaka to watch the action, see page 26. On the dirt front, have you ever wondered what mods the best enduro riders in the country do to their bikes to make them ultra-competitive? Turn to page 96 in the Roost Zone for their favourite mods. Based on a polyurethane membrane, it’s designed to be windproof and waterproof, so it’ll protect you from even the most inclement weather conditions, but it’s also breathable, so moisture – sweat, or that rain which got in when you opened up as you stopped for a snack – can escape, to improve your comfort while riding. Ventura Cruiser bars Ventura’s pitching these Heavy Metal one-inch and 1.25-inch handlebars to suit cruisers and choppers of all types, and it’s got quite bullish about it: “you’ve found the best,” says the blurb. The bars are manufactured from heavy-duty and stainless steel, with double-knurled triple clamps to deliver a vice-like grip so they won’t shift when you need them rock-solid. They’re double plated and hand polished but the range is also available in a high-gloss black. There’s only one possibly fly in the ointment – Ventura says specifications are subject to change without prior notification, so if you think these are the bars you need, get in quick.

The Kentish Hotel GASTROM RIDER Dave Wyatt Have you ever noticed the smell that fills the air when there has been a long dry spell and rain is coming? The name for that distinctive scent is called Petrichor. My adventure this month was to take a trip out to Auckland’s Manukau Heads and have a look at the old lighthouse there, followed by a stop at the Kentish Hotel for a bite to eat. That scent of Petrichor filled my helmet all morning and, as I made my way west out to the heads, the heavens opened (I had been warned). The roads which take you out to the lighthouse are great on a motorcycle and, even on a wet ride, the scenery along the way is still exceptional. The lighthouse was first lit on September 1, 1874. Burning paraffin (kerosene) it chewed through 1975 litres of fuel in its first year; it wasn’t converted to electric until 1944. The view from the site is fantastic and looking out to sea, it’s easy to appreciate why there was a need for a lighthouse at this harbour entrance. With the invention of satellite navigation and having the ability to plot exactly where you are on this earth, these beacons have become a thing of the past, but they are still great places to go and have a wander around. History lesson over with, I headed back south towards the little town of Waiuku and a bite to eat for lunch. Rain was once again on the horizon and I reached the Kentish having ridden in just 10 minutes of rain, looking like a drowned rat. The Kentish Hotel was a welcome stop out of the rain that’s for sure.

The Kentish boasts being the longest holder of a continual liquor license in NZ, and looking around at the pictures on the walls the place has history a plenty. The Kentish has been at the heart of Waiuku since being built in 1851. The fact it still stands is testimony to the locals love of the place and the service it has provided the community over the years. In 1916 and 1926 fire swept through the town of Waiuku and on both occasions the building survived, thanks to the locals. As you would

expect, there are stories aplenty about this old place from a resident ghost to bullet holes in the walls. It all makes for a great pit stop. At the time of my visit the Chef was in the middle of creating a new menu (an up-to-date version can be found on their website www.thekentishhotel.co.nz). For lunch I had the Kentish B.L.A.T and it was just what was needed followed by a coffee of course, before I contemplated leaving this safe haven for another battle with the elements.

Both destinations are well worth a visit, there is an abundance of history and great roads to be discovered out this way, but don’t just take my word for it, check them out for yourself.
