Big news this year was the arrival of a couple of wellcredentialed competitors to BMW’s all-conquering R 1200 GS in the form of Moto Guzzi’s Stelvio V-twin and Yamaha’s all-new XTZ Super Tenere parallel twin. What a difference a year – not to mention a change in criteria – can make. The evidence is here, where the sheer number of ‘commuter’ bikes has overwhelmed all other road categories. There’s some impressive newcomers here too including new marques like Kymco and Daelim.
Yes we tested several road legal dirt bikes this year but the others were more ‘enduros-with-lights.’ Suzuki’s DR650 and Yamaha’s WR250R are different because they were designed from the ground up as true dualpurpose bikes in the spirit of TSs, XTs and DTs of old.

Ollie’s hardly had a day’s rest since the start of the calendar year, picking up, testing then cleaning and dropping back the latest MXers and Enduro machines. The big news early on was Yamaha’s reverse-cylinder YZ450F, then later on in the year KTM’s 350 SX-F
The story here was all about fuel injection, with Ollie testing the last of the carburetted 250Fs in the first and second quarter and the fi rst of the EFi models in the second and third. Which one’s best forr you? Ollie will offer his thoughts in the January 2011 issue.

Suzuki made a major impression on the Open class enduro scene in 2010 with the release of the critically-acclaimed RMX450Z, spiritual successor to the seminal RMX250 which first saw light of day 20-some years ago. In saying that both KTM and sister company Husaberg also impressed.
Not much to say here bar the fact that there wasn’t much movement in the 250cc enduro category with only incremental upgrades to existing models like Yamaha’s (tested) WR250F and Honda’s CRF250X.

PROTECTION & BLING In our last report the Kiwi Rider subs promo Yamaha WR250R received a power increase through a horn-looking GYTR muffler and had its tail tidied via the sleek GYTR Off-Road Number Plate Holder. This month its morphed into what can only be described as a Supertrail bling-mobile! Assorted accoutrements of blue anodized GYTR hardware add both protection advantages and visual impact. The GYTR caliper and discs guards provide added protection from stray rocks when fanging it hard on the gravel roads, whilst most importantly the GYTR Alloy Sump Guard, which weighs next-to-nothing, delivers indestructible protection for the engine sump, cases and all important water-pump housing. AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION Damaging a water-pump mid adventure is a sure fire way to kill your buzz, and perhaps the next most vulnerable piece of vital motorcycle appendage is the rear brake lever. Over the years we’ve seen countless levers bent into useless shapes or snap right off either through river crossings or scaling rocky Southland sheep tracks turning the rider’s adventure experience into havoc.

The simplest method of protection comes in the form of a GYTR brake snake. This simple lightweight contraption saves your brake lever from bending excessively, or worse, snapping off. Another handy little GYTR part is the GYTR Sump Plug with an integrated magnet. Its blue anodized to conform to the rest of the GYTR parts
although only in the event of an out-of-control fender scrapping wheel stand would reveal to your adventure buddies that you have such cool drain plug. TRICK SUMP PLUG Hot looking it may be, but the GYTR Sump Plug is not just there for looks. It’s main job is to magnetise and retain all floating metallic flakes that usually come from a wearing clutch which would have otherwise tried stifling your engine’s oil ports and pumps. Finally, for visual aesthetics to match the rest of you GYTR WR bolt-ons there is the blue anodized timing plugs, oil fill cap and rear chain guide, as well as a pair of trick rear axle blocks. Right about now you’re probably thinking the WR250R weighs another couple of kilograms with all the replacement GYTR parts. Prior to bolting on the latest shipment of GYTR parts from Yamaha NZ the WR250R weighed in at 130kg; post GYTR bolt-on phase KR’s high tech bike scales barely blinked at 130.5kg, a sublime outcome considering just how much protection that alloy sump guard provides. For the rest, it really is just a matter of what came off went back on.
