KIWI RIDER
elcome to the April issue of Kiwi Rider. US$1.95 Million. That’s the estimated price of the Koenigsegg One:1 when it goes on sale. It’s the only production car to offer a the ‘golden’ power to weight ratio of 1hp for every 1kg. It’s a phenomenal power to weight ratio and Yamaha’s 2015 YZF-R1 has a slightly better ratio. With 200hp and 199kg, the new machine is a staggering peice of kit. Attending the launch of a new superbike-class machine at a race track is always a daunting task, however, Yamaha’s 2015 R1 has possibly more electronics on it than the International Space Station. Slide control, traction control, ABS, combined brakes and a host of other aids help the average rider get more out of such a bike than ever before. MotoGP-inspired technology is now available for the road - or track. And all for a paltry $26,999, which sort of makes the Koenigsegg seem a little on the expensive side... Turn to page 26
for our report from Eastern Creek. At the opposite end of the electronics continuum is BMW’s R NineT, a retro-inspired street-bruiser that has ABS and... erm... that’s it. But less is more as the adage goes and that’s the case with the least electronically-controlled machine in BMW’s line-up. Head to page 36 for more. On the smaller capacity side of things, KTM’s 690 Duke R (p46) and Kawasaki’s KLX150L (p53) have been serving up no less fun than the big-capacity machinery - just at a slightly less frenetic pace. Two years ago, our Jock wasn’t particularly impressed with the turning ability of the Gas Gas EC300. Seems like they’ve been listening to our tester, this year’s machine has tweaked suspension which has transformed it from also-ran into a machine for your buying short-list. See page 94 for Jock’s report on the 2015 machine. Enjoy the mag. BEN WILKINS

DARK HORSE
A
merica’s first motorcycle company has announced the newest member of the Indian Chief line-up and its first 2016 model — the Indian Chief Dark Horse. This is a cruiser built upon the Indian Chief platform and, unlike other bikes in their line-up, it’s much darker and has only a flash of chrome and acres of matte black paint, along with cast aluminium wheels. According to Indian, “The Dark Horse conveys an aggressive pose, and being the lightest in the series, is the quickest model in the Chief family”. The Dark Horse is powered by the same Thunderstroke 111 motor, and shares the same chassis as the Indian Chief Classic. Features include ABS, keyless ignition, cruise control and a five-year unlimited mileage warranty. Contact your local dealer for more information.

Limited to 500 units, the X comes with individually numbered side panels, a billet aluminium name badge on the oil tank, black wheels and components and a paint-scheme by paint
specialists 8 Ball. Thankfully the engine is still the same impressive inline triple lump that boasts 2294cc and pumps out, a faintly ridiculous, 221Nm of torque at just 2750rpm. The Rocket X comes with an unlimited mileage, two year warranty. Visit your local Triumph dealer or see www.triumphmotorcycles.co.nz for more information.

CROSBY TO RIDE AT WORLD GP LEGENDS FESTIVAL
G
raeme Crosby will ride with other ‘legends’ at a new classic motorcycle racing festival this June 19-21. Spain’s Jerez circuit will play host to the festival, which caters for GP bikes built between 1980 and 2000. HYOSUNG CUP 250S SHOW THE CARS HOW IT’S DONE
W
e all know the huge success of the Wil Sport Hyosung Cup. Young riders in the upper North Island have been cutting their teeth on the Korean Hyosung 250s for a few seasons now. The promoters recently joined forces to take it to a new audience. The fourth round of the series saw the racers guest at one of New Zealand’s most prestigious motor sport events, the NZ Motor Cup. The car meeting included V8 Super Tourers, the international Toyota Racing Series, and the SangYong
utes. By all accounts the Wil Sports Hyosung gang stole the show. Reports of four, five and at times, six riders abreast, contesting corner entries, had the crowds’ jaws on the floor. Car race spectators aren’t used to the amount of passing that went on in a whole year of car races. Look out for more combined car and bike meeting in the future. Veteran Gavin Veltmeyer managed to win the round with young guns Daniel Mettam and points leader Nathanel Diprose coming in second and third respectively.

Two-in-one The Forma Akira CLM Smart Back Protector promises to be two protectors in one. It uses a unique, patented protector fastening/unfastening system called SMART that joins or divides the two parts that make up the protector. That means you can use it either as a full back protector or to simply guard the bottom half of your lower-back lumbar area. Either way you’re covered by CE Approval pr EN 1621:2:2013 (Level 2). Distributor: Forbes and Davies Price: $219 Carbon-smart gloves Alpinestars SMX-2 Air Carbon Gloves use innovative carbon knuckle guards, a technical 3D mesh and leather main shell construction to provide protection and cooling airflow, after all, autumn may be looming but good riding gear’s still hot at round-town speeds. The gloves also feature a touch-screen-capable index fingertip and thumb, so you don’t have to remove your gloves to operate your smartphone or GPS. Distributed by: Crown Kiwi Enterprises Price: $129.90 Show up in the crowd There’s not much point wearing a high-viz vest when your luggage masks you from following drivers, and anyway who wants to look like a mobile traffic light when they dismount. or both racers and spectators alike, Phillip Island is a special experience. The 4.445km circuit is fast and, for the most part, motorcycle friendly. The long sweeping curves allow time to take in the wonder of the high speeds, sustained maximum lean angles and the jockeying for position that this allows. When the weather behaves, as it mostly does at this time of year, it’s hard to think of a better place to experience motorcycle road racing and that’s before you realise just how much there is to see at the Classic.

There are many of us with memories of how great things were ‘back in the day’. So with rose-tinted spectacles firmly pressed on noses, there is no end of folk checking out the many machines on display throughout the pits. The bikes aren’t restricted to the most competitive machines of the day either. Genuine enthusiasts, who like nothing better than to get some of these iconic machines out on the track, are also plentiful; including our own Vince Burrell on a borrowed Moto Guzzi. Then there is the ‘meet the meams’ dinner on
the Friday night. This year it featured retired Crew Chief Jeremy Burgess (former spannerman for our own Graeme Crosby, Wayne Gardner, Mick Doohan and Valentino Rossi). Along with a good deal of international banter between teams, there were some intimate glimpses into the workings of the top race teams, now and from the good old days. New Zealand team captain Graeme Crosby was heard to enthuse “This is how the GP scene used to be”. There were a number of (former?) greats among the crowds, walking around the
(Period 5) champion Peter Hinton, who I’d been busting my balls to keep in sight during the previous day’s races, wasn’t a spotty youth but a grey-haired ‘original’ in his late fifties. Some of these old boys might not ride much but they ride safe and don’t hang around either!

pit area over the weekend. The Island Classic really is a living, breathing display of classic bikes, and racers. The smells and sounds only add depth to the rich experience in the individual classes.
RACING The racing varied from the professionally ridden, no expenses spared rockets in the International (United Kingdom and Australian teams) event, to those riders who’d always wanted to race but now in their later years
have finally got around to fulfilling the dreams of their youth. Mixed in were the ‘originals’ – riders who rode the bikes ‘back in the day’ – and some of them certainly didn’t ‘putt’ around. Sure, racing is racing and some can get a bit excited (me) but there is always someone or something to add a touch of reality, be it watching the massive CBX1000 Honda with all of 103 horsepower, skilfully beating off the 1100cc superbikes of later years. Or, as in my case, finding that the reigning 350cc
The need for consistent finishes in the international challenge was never more obvious than when both the professional first division (UK-Aus) and amateur second division (USA-NZ) tables were turned in the northern hemisphere’s teams favour. With Ireland’s Ryan Farquhar, Conor Cummins and Jeremy McWilliams taking the top three spots respectively, the UK won this year’s International challenge for the first time and there was plenty of celebrating. Five of the top Australian riders did not finish at least one of the four challenge races. To be fair, neither did Isle of Man stalwart John McGuinness. Australia also suffered the loss of perhaps the fastest ‘original’ when Robbie Phillis’ bike expired during practice. Sadly in a similar fashion to our Australian cousins, the Kiwis suffered defeat to the American team for the first time as well. With the loss of team co-captain Kevin Grey (business distractions) and a shortage of competitive international challenge bikes in the Kiwi camp (things got so desperate that a couple of us TZ350 pilots were called in to take on the 1300cc competition!) it was set to be a tough match. With the Kiwi ring-ins and reserves suffering non finishes, even with team captain Graeme Crosby doing all he could to rally the troops, save don his leathers, the writing was on the wall. The old ‘to finish first, first you must finish’ adage must have been ringing in Crosby’s ears. With the huge field of 520 plus entries and a rumoured 20000 spectators, someone made the point that perhaps young Kiwi riders could do worse than to look for a ‘classic ride’ in the International Challenge. A path to bigger things is hard to see from our domestic racing series in New Zealand. Guys like Mick Doohan got their break when a few mates all pitched a bit of money in, got a bike and picked a rider to support. With the classics at least the bike will be current for years to come. If you’ve ever thought of getting involved, now is a good hour. Our international team could certainly do with some help.

Completely new and full of MotoGP tech for 2015, Yamaha’s newly updated superbike is set to change the electronics game for race replicas.
A
MotoGP bike for every rider. That’s how Yamaha pitched the new 2015 YZF-R1 to the journalists assembled for the bike’s world launch at Sydney Motorsport Park, Eastern Creek. Much mention was made of riding the MotoGP M1 during the development process to get an idea of where the design and development team wanted to go with the new machine. And it turns out they wanted to go to the track. When Yamaha launched the original YZF-R1 in 1998 it changed the game. The new bike was lighter and smaller than everything else and had a better power to weight ratio. It was an instant success on the sales floor. However, Yamaha has only won one WSB championship – in 2009 with American Ben Spies aboard the first cross-plane crank machine. I’ve had the good fortune to attend three YZF-R1 world launches and this is the first time Yamaha has said outright that the new bike has been developed for the track first and foremost. According to the designers, previous iterations of the R1 were made for twisty road riding, so this is a big shift in design thinking from Yamaha. In their bid to make a track-focused R1, the bike’s designers started with a blank sheet and, as mentioned above, took the M1 as inspiration. This has produced a completely new machine but one with the R1 name and the ‘same spirit as all previous R1s’. The result of the blank sheet approach is a bike that’s 7kg lighter and makes 13kW (18hp) more than the outgoing model. The 200hp (147.1kw) headline number puts the new R1 right into bragging rights contention with the latest BMW S1000RR and Aprilia RSV4RR – machines which the 2014 R1 lagged behind in the numbers stakes. That the R1 had lagged behind the class leaders is not entirely surprising considering the last R1 was virtually unchanged (electronics aside) for six years since the cross-plane crank model was introduced back in 2009. In chassis terms the R1 is bang on. At 199kg with a tank of fuel it’s lighter than its four cylinder competition, coming in 12kg lighter than the ABS-equipped Fireblade and 5kg lighter than the Aprilia and BMW offerings. At 200hp the engine is in the same ball park as both the Aprilia and BMW. Yamaha’s M1-inspired electronics package is more sophisticated than anything else currently on offer, with a six-axis inertial control system offering MotoGP-style slide control.
With Australia offering (almost) guaranteed dry weather when most of the Northern Hemisphere is experiencing some of the worst snow and storms on record, Yamaha chose to launch the R1 at Eastern Creek, as it did with the 2005 and 2009 R1 models. The only time I’ve ridden at this track was for the 2005 R1’s launch, in 2004. So, as you can imagine, I felt somewhat rusty climbing aboard Yamaha’s latest 200hp missile. Yamaha set the test bikes out in pitlane as if it were a race grid, and it felt even more so with Australian, and British SuperBike championship contender, Josh Brookes ahead of me on the ‘grid’. Firing up the R1 gives the same off-beat sound we’ve come to associate with the Yamaha’s cross-plane crank machines but the exhaust note is seemingly louder as the underseat exhausts have gone in favour of a traditional side-mounted muffler. The note is hollower and has more of a rasp to it than with previous models. Blipping the throttle the noise is reminiscent, if hugely quieter, of the M1. At 13,500rpm down the start finish straight the sound from the exhaust and airbox makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It has a noise all of its own and is closer to the Aprilia V4 than the BMW in-line four. The initial impression of the bike on the first few laps was how small and nimble it is compared to the previous machine. Changing line mid-corner is uncannily easy and it takes a little getting used to as the feeling is quite nervous to start with. Half a dozen laps under my belt and this new-found agility is especially handy through the tracks new ‘back section’ which has a fast left/right/left/right/left. Changing direction quickly here just required a twist of the throttle to start the bike lifting away from the apex and a light push on the opposite bar. The new bike requires a lightness of input that would see the outgoing model rider barely changing direction. It’s really that different. I guess I should mention the power. All 200hp of it. Yep, this is one powerful motorcycle. At 7500rpm, when the exhaust power-valve opens the second channel in the centre muffler, there’s a distinct kick in the power, not unlike the two-strokes of old. And it does it again around 10,000rpm all the way through peak power at 13,500rpm and onto the redline at 14,000rpm. As I said earlier, at this point the noise from the exhaust and airbox peaks in a howling crescendo. There are four different power modes to choose from and while PWR1 gives the most throughout the rev range it is also quite aggressive in its delivery at

ix months after its launch, we’ve finally got hold of BMW’s hotly anticipated sportsretro boxer, the R NineT. And it’s refreshing – but also a little amusing that BMW seems to have come full circle. From the original boxer twins, which were little more than a big motor in a frame with wheels and handlebars, through the K-series flying bricks, the huge touring machines (with every conceivable rider aid), the world-roaming GS-series and the World Superbike- and Isle of Man TT-winning S1000RR to the R NineT – a big motor in a frame with wheels and handlebars. Now, I don’t think BMW came up with this all on their own, you see the full-bearded, dirty-fingernailed side of motorcycling has been doing this for some years now. It’s pretty hip to take a 1970s or 80s bike and customise it by removing the excess metalwork, changing the wheels and suspension and maybe adding some new styling to make a cool retro machine. The likes of El Solitario Motorcycles in Spain, Deus ex Machina in Australia and Roland Sands in the USA have been making some amazing (and some rather strange) motorcycles. The R NineT is BMW’s factory-built retro for those without the beards or dirty fingernails, or those who just don’t have the time, skills or inclination to build a bike like that. Its production also marks the 90th anniversary of the marque. With the R NineT, the philosophy of less is more springs to mind. There’s not a whole lot

there apart from a huge motor and somewhere to sit. The engine is a fully stressed member of the chassis. In fact, there’s not much of a chassis to speak of. The engine has a subframe bolted to the front which holds the forks, bars and front wheel. The rear wheel, shock, shaft drive and rider and pillion seats are supported by a couple of subframes mounted to the rear of the motor. That’s it. No central spine, no cradle. Just a huge motor with everything, quite literally, hanging off it. Ok, so there’s no frame to speak of. But there is a whole lot of engine. The 1170cc air/oilcooled horizontally opposed twin (or ‘Boxer’) motor dominates the bike visually –

wanted to like this bike. No, more than that, I expected to like it. The KTM looks cool and our KR test bike had lots of KTM hard-parts bling on it too. It definitely has some swagger... like a well-muscled short man. But then, as delivered, the 690 Duke engine didn’t behave at all as I expected, or indeed, how I imagined. An almost 700cc single should, to my mind, normally mean monster torque and a bruising punch from idle. That’d be followed up by weighty mid-range that you’d short-shift through and there’d be bugger all top-end. The 690 Duke’s motor couldn’t have been more different… It is civilised, almost mellow off the bottom. At around 2500rpm the fuelling is fluffy and it is snatchy under load until it gets well over 3000rpm. It then pulls cleanly until cut-out at about 8500rpm. Good power is had from 4000rpm with decent power building from 5000rpm to within a blink of the red-line. Peak power feels like it’s close to the redline too.

awasaki’s KLX150L is a light weight road-legal trail bike. In the course of our time with it we discovered it could be incredibly frugal – how does almost 39 kilometres per litre sound? With a seven litre tank, that would make the KLX150L able to run around 260km before it started running on fumes. We never managed to find where the reserve kicked in but when it is required, it is easy to reach down to the fuel tap. Off-road that dropped to 30 km/litre, giving a 200+ km range. Not bad at all. The KLX150L is not going to jerk your shoulders out of their sockets when you snap the throttle wide open in first gear. And that is part of the attraction. It’s an excellent bike for entry level riders who want to sample both tar and dirt with one bike, and ride to university or work. You may also be surprised by the level of grip the IRC Trail Wing GP tyres offer. Yes, they look like full knobbie jobbies, but they sure stick to the tar. We tried really hard to lock up the front tyre and skid it, to no avail. And that was with the 33mm diameter forks almost bottomed out. It was almost the same with the rear tyre, but after jumping on the pedal we did manage to get a couple of chirps from that one. Okay, so the KLX150L can nip around town, hop over curbs, wind through heavy traffic, whizz down speed hump-infested streets with impunity and is competent off-road. But how about the open road? Well, on the motorway it will run an indicated 100km/h in still air. Present it

ou really had to be there, or it wouldn’t seem credible. Along with the other 50 riders, I was climbing the Borland road that leads to South Arm of Lake Manapouri. It wasn’t particularly pleasant – chilly and misty, with visibility only a few tens of metres and practically every corner of the narrow winding shingle road was blind. The pace was very slow. Then, unexpectedly, I emerged above the cloud, the temperature increased by five degrees in five seconds, and the splendid view over the glacial Grebe Valley was laid out in all its glory. Such is the joy of motorcycle riding, and such is the joy of adventure rides. Some of my joy came from the bike I was riding – a new Yamaha XT660Z Tenere, courtesy of Yamaha New Zealand. It had been lightly modified for the Safari (see sidebar for details) and makes a good compromise between the heavyweight twins (1000 or 1200cc) and the lightweight enduro or trail singles (250 or 450cc); faster than the latter
on shingle or sealed roads, and easier to handle in the tricky sections than the former. Riders came from all over, with the furthest travelled being 72-year-old Des Trubshoe who rode his Yamaha TT-R250 down from Whangarei. That’s keen. Yamaha Australia brand manager, Peter Payne, was there and crossing the Tasman with him was Yamaha-sponsored stunt rider Dave McKenna, having his first adventure experience and testing the handling limits of the latest WR250R and WR450F. The annual Yamaha Safari is the premier event of its kind each summer, and is organised by Britton Adventures, with Mike Britton and Angela Bruce at the helm. What sets this experience apart from others is the emphasis on quality accommodation and meals, and that the course is set to allow riders of big bikes, and those who bravely choose to carry pillions, to have a ride that is challenging enough but without the excessive risk of bike damage or rider injury through the

BELRAY SERIES ROUND ONE
S
unday December 7 was the first round of the Bel Ray Series. We all arrived at Russell Vinning’s about 35 minutes west of Huntly. The track looked quite fast and flowing in places. With everyone ready to go after a short ‘look lap’ we all headed up to the start. The gun went off with a bang and the 250s and 125s on the front row roared off into the first corner. Another gunshot sounded and the 85s and women followed into the first corner. The track began to cut up within the first three laps and got quite dusty in places towards the end of the race. Aaron King took the flag one and a half hours later, winning the race from Reece Lister and Jake Wightman. James Scott took the 12-16 85cc class followed by Jack Broughton and Naylan Aldridge. Tyla Cushion won the junior ladies followed by Samantha Kelly and Ellie Tilson. Amanda Barr won the Novice ladies class from Julie Charlston and Kelly Anette. I had an average round with patches of good riding but made some silly mistakes, crashing too often, losing me time and energy. I finished way back in ninth.
Words: William Eyre felt like I could get some decent results but I didn’t make the day easy for myself, crashing at the second corner and then getting taken out two times in the first lap! It wasn’t meant to be, and I finished 10th in my class.
ROUND THREE The finale of the 2015 Bel Ray Series was held at Bombay. The track looked different to all of the others with quite a steep course. The first row of juniors flew off into the first corner, closely followed by the second row. The track got really dusty in some places towards the end, just like at round two. Luke Taylor came home after one and a half hours to take the overall win, followed by Jake Wightman and Andrew Barr. Naylan Aldridge won the 12-16 85cc class from Nick Wightman and myself. Tyla Cushion once again took the win in the Junior Ladies again, ahead of Rachael Archer and Ellie Tilson. The Novice Ladies class was won by Alivia Singer from Amanda Barr and Julie Charlston. I really enjoyed this round and was happy with my result even though it could have been a little bit better, but I liked the track which suited my riding.

First corner woes!
ROUND TWO Round two was at Kenny Smith’s property just down the road from round one. The track looked really rough and bumpy and got really dusty towards the end of the race. Andrew Barr passed Jake Wightman on the first lap but Andrew was forced to retire later in the race with a flat tyre. Jake Wightman came home to take the flag followed by Luke Taylor and Troy Miller. Coby Rooks won the 12-16 85cc class from Caleb Richardson and Jack Broughton. The Junior ladies race was won by Tyla Cushion with Rachael Archer and Samantha Kelly not far behind. The Novice ladies class was won by Amanda Barr from Julie Charlston and Melissa Barr. This round wasn’t any better for me – it was actually worse. I felt good on the bike and

ew player in the NZ off-road market - CFMoto - has launched a featurepacked, sports side-by-side vehicle, the Z8S. The 800cc sports side-by-side (SSV) is part of CFMotos growing range. CFMoto New Zealand General Manager, Dale Schmidtchen believes the Z8S will be well received by Kiwis given its competitive retail price of $12,490 ex GST. “When you compare the cost of a Japanese 500 ATV which sells for close to $14,999, with a CFMoto Z8S side by side for $12,490 ex GST including a two year warranty, it’s a no brainer – the safety and versatility of a SSV should win every time.” Schmidtchen said. The new Z8S will complement CFMoto’s Z8 EX model already offered in New Zealand for $15,065 ex GST ride away. “The main point of difference between the Z8EX and the Z8S is the narrower wheel track which make it more trailer friendly. The Z8S also offers $2600 worth of accessories such as alloy wheels, tow pack, roof kit, independent front and rear suspension and selectable 2WD-4WD modes.
“We hope Kiwis will respond well to the value for money this model offers and expect it will be a good seller for us in 2015.” Schmidtchen said. For more information visit www.cfmoto.com.au

Woodville GP founder Tim Gibbes was on hand as a quarter of a century of Kiwi motocross domination was shattered by Australian visitor Kirk Gibbs in late January.

t was one Mr Gibbes handing the trophy across to another Mr Gibbs at this year’s 54th annual New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville at the end of January. The 25-year-old Australian Kirk Gibbs took his KTM450 to win the main feature race at Woodville this year and became the first non-Kiwi in 25 years to win the coveted New Zealand crown, and it was a thrill for him to receive the winner’s sash from former world championship GP rider Tim Gibbes. “Tim came up and told me a bit about the history of this event and I was amazed. It was great to meet this man,” said Gibbs.
Tim Gibbes founded the Woodville in 1961 and was one of the first men to win it. Staged on the Woodville farmland owned by the uncle of Gibbes’ brother-in-law Ken Cleghorn, Gibbes and Cleghorn fought handlebar to handlebar at that inaugural event in December 1961, Cleghorn eventually taking away the silverware (an old trophy that Gibbes had won in Europe). Gibbes took his revenge to win it back the following year, actually just a month later, in January 1962. In 1963, a group of just 53 riders entertained a crowd of around 3000, Taranaki’s Malcolm Campbell winning the day, but Gibbes

Fresh suspension settings, a new electric start and an adjustable power-valve mean the 2015 EC300 deserves a place on your buying shortlist says Jock McLauchlan.
T
wo years ago we tested the 2013 Gas Gas EC300 here at KR and, to be frank, most of our test riders were a little disappointed with it. Old school dynamics and heavy handling with average suspension meant the 2013 model was a sizeable step behind the leading Euro opposition brand. Last year the Gasser 300 took a big step in the right direction, but it still didn’t make a compelling enough buy-me-now case, unless you were particularly looking for something different to ride. However, 2015 has seen things change dramatically for the big-bore Gas Gas stroker. This year’s EC300 is a great machine and, straight up, the only thing I really don’t like is that the seat foam is too thin at the rear of the seat for tall riders. For some years now the bikes coming out of the Gas Gas factory have been very handsome bikes with lots of quality, bling parts fitted as standard equipment. I’m pleased to say those cool looks are now backed up by the riding experience. Starting with the 299.3cc liquid-cooled, six-speed, two-stroke engine, the up-dates are significant. Chief among these are the new more compact electric-start system and the adjustable power valve. Modes for Rain and Dry are also selectable. The power delivery is excellent with smooth tractable power at low revs and a strong progressive strengthening of mumbo as the revs build. Late in the rev range, slightly before maximum rpm the 300

motor’s power flattens off and it starts to vibe a little. Rest assured though that short-shifting prior to max revs results in very swift, almost effortless progress. To be honest I only noticed the vibration and power drop-off at high rpm on a very fast gravel road going particularly hard. On the trail it is not noticeable. I’d rate this engine as one of the very best for the ease it will deliver quick and efficient enduro trail times. Truly elite riders may want a whisker more snap from low revs in special tests and, thanks to the externally adjustable power-valve, this can be quickly adjusted. This engine really performs well with no weaknesses for trail or enduro riding. In the past the real Achilles Heel of the Gas Gas models has been the steering. They required serious effort from the rider to turn quickly and more-or-less didn’t want to turn tightly... however, that said, they were stable. This year’s 300 is a dream by comparison with predictable, planted steering and the Gasser will even hunt out the inside line while still remaining stable when speeds increase. The frame has been optimized for strength and handling enhancements, but the vastly improved suspension action has been significant with regard to the handling gains too. The Marzocchi closed cartridge USD 48mm forks with 305mm of travel have revised settings that work very well. Testing the bike in Riverhead forest the forks ability to soak up tree roots is as good as it gets on a standard bike. I went looking for ugly roots that would
