K-3 SV: THE NEW-GENERATION HELMET FOR EVERY GENERATION, FROM YOUNG RACE ENTHUSIASTS TO EXPERIENCED RIDERS LOOKING FOR COMFORT AND PERFORMANCE. SAFETY AND COMFORT The K-3 SV has been designed using Finite Elements Method (FEM) analysis, which makes it possible to perform crash test and helmet strength simulations. The high impact-resistant thermoplastic resin (HIRTH) outer shell is offered in 2 sizes, while the expanded polystyrene (EPS) inner shell, which deploys four different densities of foam in a multi-zone configuration, comes in 4 sizes.

SIZE COUNTS MAXIMUM PROTECTION WITH MINIMUM BULK In line with our AGV Extreme Standards, the helmet’s structural elements have been designed to obtain the high performance we set out to achieve while keeping size and weight to a minimum. As a result, the whole helmet is lighter and more compact despite offering substantially improved protection, ergonomics and comfort.

INCREASED PERIPHERAL VISION Side vision is greater than on traditional GT helmets thanks to the specially shaped bottom profile of the aperture, greatly enhancing active safety. Features an internal sun visor.

VENTILATION AND AERODYNAMICS Thanks to CFD Analysis (Computational fluid dynamics), the special ventilation system provides maximum airflow to the head through two front and side vents, one central vent and two extractors at the back of the helmet. What’s more, it’s also much less prone to buffeting from side winds.

Hello...

W

elcome to the December issue of Kiwi Rider. Spring weather remains while it’s technically summer, but the lighter days have brought out the bikes. Now’s a great time to introduce a friend or colleague to the freedom of motorcycling and in this issue we’ve got four Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) compliant machines which could fit the bill. From LML’s automatic 125, which is essentially an old-school Vespa, through to Yamaha’s funky new MT-07 parallel twin there’s something for most tastes. And with a price spread from $3490 to $11,999 there’s a price to suit most pockets – perfect for those just starting, or for more experienced riders wanting a second bike or something that doesn’t break the bank.

KIWI RIDER

The Australian round of MotoGP was a corker and just goes to show that the outcome of a race is never certain... but what is certain is there’s a handful of Kiwis whose talents have secured them jobs at the highest level of racing’s premier series. Todd Sutherland caught up with MotoGP’s Kiwis at Phillip Island. On the dirt, Honda and Suzuki have launched their latest motocross weapons for the 2015 season. Jock McLauchlan and Sam Greenslade had the enviable task of riding them all. And staying on dirt theme, if your kid is on a Kawasaki KX85 and you’re not sure what their next bike step should be, check out Kawasaki’s KX100 big bore kit. BEN WILKINS

INDIAN RETURNS TO SOUTHLAND

I

ndian Motorcycle, famous for daring feats at the hands of Burt Munro, will return to Southland at this year’s Burt Munro Challenge in late November. The company will display its all-new Indian Scout alongside Munro’s 1920 ‘World’s Fastest Indian’. The Scout will be part of the full line-up of Indian Motorcycles on display - including the all-new Roadmaster – at the E Hayes Motorworks Collection from November 26 to December 1, 2014. “My father spent over 55 years fine-tuning his Scout in his garage here in Southland and when he could no longer race, sold his bikes to the E Hayes Motorworks Collection because he wanted them to always stay in Southland – to have the all-new Scout here in Southland

96 years after Dad bought his 1920 Scout is just brilliant,” said John Munro, Burt’s son who participates in The Burt Munro Challenge each year. “I rode the all-new Scout at Sturgis this year as a guest of Indian Motorcycle and was very impressed with its handling and balance. I’m sure Dad would have just loved it.” Peter Harvey, Country Manager for Indian Motorcycles is excited about the return of Scout to New Zealand and Southland, “Burt’s feats on a 47-year-old bike at the Bonneville Salt Flats were bought to life in the 2005 movie The World’s Fastest Indian – to modify a bike’s top speed from 96km/hour to over 320km/ hour shows his sheer determination, grit and ingenuity, all attributes that resonate with our Kiwi riders.

“The first truly new Scout in more than seven decades, it is a contemporary yet classic interpretation of one of motorcycling’s most coveted and famous bikes. We really encourage Southlanders and visitors to the Challenge to come along and see the new Scout and the rest of the Indian range – currently our only dealership is in Auckland so this will be the first time our whole range has been in the South Island. To top off Indian’s return to Southland, a group of our customers will travel down from Auckland in convoy to attend the Challenge,” said Harvey. To see the full range of Indian motorcycles, parts, apparel and accessories, or to book a test ride, visit www.indianmotorcycles.co.nz

BRITTON ADVENTURES What started as a bit of a jaunt on motorbikes, well scooters actually, around Bali with a couple of friends has become a full-blown adventure tour business for Mike and Angela of Britton Adventures. Their friends had such a fantastic holiday that they convinced Mike and Angela that others would pay to have the experience they had. As they were already running adventure rides in New Zealand during the summer months, Mike and Angela tentatively put the idea to their customers of a motorcycling holiday in Bali. Quickly they had 14 signed up on the inaugural Bali By The Backroads tour, and the business grew from there with customers asking for new destinations. One month Mike and Angela may find themselves in Mongolia leading a bunch of keen off road motorcyclists on a tour through this far-flung outpost, the next month they could be in the jungles of Laos making sure everyone is aware of the need to stay on

track due to the UXOs (unexploded ordinances) that could be about. They have a policy to only run tours in countries they are passionate about; countries that excite them and pique their sense of adventure. After Bali they added the Venture Into Vietnam tour as they had travelled there some years earlier and enjoyed it immensely. Then a Kiwi friend who had been living in Vietnam moved to Mongolia and insisted they visit her there. “Find us someone with hire bikes and we’ll be there,” was the reply from Mike. She did, and Britton Adventures’ Into Outer Mongolia tours became a reality. From

Vietnam it was a natural progression to the two neighbouring countries of Laos and Cambodia. Then in 2012 they moved into South America with Bolivia High Andes. Next on their schedule of new destinations is Cuba with a tour planned for October 2015. Visit adventurerides.co.nz for more information on their tours.

e haven’t had a rider, and winner, in the premier class since Simon Crafar in the late nineties. There is however a sprinkling of Kiwis throughout the MotoGP organisation. A quick nosey around the paddock brought a few names to the surface; Peter Benson, Mike Webb, Brent Stephens and Brian Harden.

18

KIWI RIDER

After a little digging it becomes apparent that Englishman Peter Clifford, former motorcycle journalist (editor of Motocourse) and later team owner, is perhaps responsible more than any other for opening the door for the Kiwis who are in MotoGP today. Clifford, who’s married to a Kiwi girl as it happens, was

instrumental in introducing both Peter Benson and Mike Webb into the Grand Prix scene. Webb in turn introduced Stephens who had already built a good reputation working for Simon Crafar. Harden’s path was via his involvement in the BSL500 project and then getting hired by Kenny Roberts for his expanded team

in the early 2000s. In teams dominated by riders and owners for whom English is a second language, not unexpectedly, you don’t keep your job unless you are very, very good. In typical Kiwi fashion all down play the obvious talent and hard work it takes to get into a team and stay there…

Bored with modern scooter offerings and want to experience life on the edge? This old school Vespa could be just the ticket.

Stock tyres are marginal in the dry, lethal in the wet. High seat, low bars provides leaned forward riding. Note under-floor ducts: part of the LML Inlet Air System which channels air into the engine bay to cool the engine and transmission and also feeds the intake to the carburettor.

n the USA it is sold as a ‘Stella’. But it’s not a Belgian beer, it is an Indian-made PX series Vespa scooter and is sold in New Zealand as the LML Star, in this case the 125 Auto. Unlike the LML Star 200 we tested in December last year, there is no need to mess around with a notchy, difficult to shift left twistgrip-operated four-speed manual transmission. This is a twist and go machine, and it is extremely nimble and quite peppy in the urban environment. That said, in our initial, sphincter-puckering run up Auckland’s southern motorway, with the chromed axle nuts of 18-wheelers flashing in our peripheral vision while the speedo was struggling to register 90 km/h, it felt very similar to our first ride on the 200. There was the same feeling of instability, as if riding on a knife edge. Just as on the 200, we stopped to check the tyre pressures – it felt as if they were inflated to 50 psi. They weren’t. The front showed 22 psi, the rear 28. So we pressed on. Unfortunately scooter expert Goetz Neugebauer had packed up Scooter é Motion in Newton Road and decamped to Melbourne so there was no technical expert to call on with regard to the tyres. In the case of the LML 200, he was horrified to learn it had escaped from the distributor’s warehouse with the low-spec stock Dunlops on it. He recommended Michelin S1s and with the distributor’s approval, fitted them for us. They made a substantial difference to the 200’s stability. The 125 was fitted with Sava B14s, a part of the Slovenian company’s ‘classic’ scooter tyre range. They looked similar to the stock Dunlops originally fitted to the 200 with an old school tread pattern that may be more about looks than performance. (Sava is now owned by the parent company of Czech tyre maker Mitas but still enjoys a technical collaboration with Goodyear Dunlop Sava Tyres, a subsidiary of the Goodyear Tire and

With right side pod removed, the CVT housing is visible. The air-cooled single cylinder mounts vertically with the cam cover just under the black cover beneath the seat. The snorkel for the air box is also clearly visible, as is the duct that takes fresh air to the fan that cools the cylinder. Forget the fake grey ‘spare wheel cover’ – there’s no spare on the 125, unlike the 200. Instead there’s a seven litre petrol tank and the battery. There is no under seat storage either as the engine fills that space.

HAVE to own up to a prejudice. I do not very much like small displacement four cylinder machines. The 250s were a joke – all revs and no go. A decent single would see them off. Then there were the four cylinder 400s, used as the base for the Japanese Formula III racing class. The race versions got so expensive the manufacturers asked the Japanese motorcycle federation to kill the class. The road versions were a little like the 250/4s, but with a tiny bit of torque on tap.

The 600s were a lot better and in recent years the supersport versions have been sensational. But for this test I was faced with a power restricted device that goes by the name XJ6NL. When asked to test this bike, I demurred, suggesting there may be an interesting scooter I should be riding instead. But the editor was most insistent so I relented (only when threatened with denied access to his other interesting scooter – Ed) and took it for a spin. I was glad I did.

Yamaha’s New Street Racing Hoon, with shades of RZ350, is coming to a dealer near you.

F

risky. That would be the word that best sums up Yamaha’s new 655cc parallel twin MT-07. The engine is perky with good low down and lots of mid-range torque, the sixspeed transmission shifts nicely, the brakes are strong and the suspension action is lively. Riding the 655cc version of the MT-07 on the open road is an exciting experience, somewhat reminiscent of an earlier Yamaha twin, the 1985 RZ350. It is raw-edged fun and you need to know what you are about to get the best from it. A little like riding a just broken-in colt. It has taken a while for the MT-07 to get down-under, due to the fact Yamaha Motor Company listened to its Australasian distributor and re-configured it for the Learner Approved Motorcycle regulations. This involved fitting it with a restrictor kit, reducing the compression ratio from 11.5:1 to 11.0:1 and reducing the bore size from 80 to 78mm to reduce capacity from 689cc to 655cc. In Europe, Yamaha has been offering a free 48hp restrictor kit with new MT-07s to make the 689cc version sold there compliant for holders of A2 motorcycle licences. Under EU rules introduced last year, riders aged 19 or 20 qualify for an A2 licence, which carries a 35kw (48hp) power limit, along with a powerto-weight ratio cap of 0.2 kW/kg (200kw/tonne) and to be eligible bikes must not be derived from a vehicle of more than double the power. With a wet weight of 179kg, the MT-07 falls just within the European A2 limits once restricted to 35.8kW. For the Australasian LAM requirements, motorcycles are restricted to an engine capacity of 660cc and must not exceed a power to weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne (0.15kg/kw) – with a 90kg rider on board. So, add 90 to 179 and you have 269kg. Multiply that by 0.15 and you arrive at 40.35. That is the amount of peak power the LAM version of the MT-07 is able to have. Our learner MT-07 is more powerful than the European A2 version with 38.3kW at 8000rpm on tap, but it cranks out a claimed 57.5Nm of torque at 4000rpm and Yamaha is very proud to boast that the MT-07 is “the lightest and torquiest in its class.” It may have let the cat out of the bag here. The Euro A2 regs. and the Australasian LAM laws talk about power outputs. There is no mention of torque restriction. That said, power (in kilowatts) is calculated from torque (measured on a dynamometer) and rpm by the equation: Power (kW) = torque (Nm) x rpm ÷ 9.5488. Still, by some clever work with camshaft profiles, port sizes, compression ratios and fuelling, it is possible to make an extremely torquey engine without falling foul of the power restrictions.

or over 30 years now, the BMW GS adventure bike models have been almost universally regarded as ‘the’ big adventure bike – certainly the most iconic. In that time they have grown and evolved from the 1980 R80 G/S into the current 1200cc ‘Wasser Boxer’. It was my very good fortune to attend the Australasian launch of the all new R1200GS last year. Where, over two days, we rode almost 800km with 40% of it on gravel roads. So I

know this bike reasonably well and know it is a great machine. However, there is nothing quite like getting a bike into your own backyard, where you’re familiar with the conditions and know the terrain, to let you truly evaluate it. I was excited. The weather was sunny and warm, the roads were dry and the GS and I were going exploring. I punched the waypoints into the GPS for a 200-plus km circuit that included about 40km of steep, hilly and, in

places, muddy gravel road and eased off down my driveway. The first thing I noticed is how slim the BMW is through the middle, seated or standing and how light and manageable it feels. Sure it is a big bike, but it certainly doesn’t feel it, particularly once on the move. The steering and handling feel light, with an effortless, intuitive turn-in at low speed. Then you open the throttle properly for the first time and you just know this is a superb engine.

Large capacity adventure machines have a legion of fans, especially here in NZ. Jock McLauchlan puts BMW’s water-cooled R1200GS through its paces.

ack in the ‘Good Old Days’, all bikes were like this one and they gave the simple pleasures that came with riding a simple motorcycle. I don’t mean simple in any derogatory sense, I mean uncomplicated. The 744cc Moto Guzzi V7 Stone is definitely that. This is a relatively light (180kg), low (I’m 1.78m tall and I can flat foot with both feet and have my knees bent), and compact bike (it looks small until you ride it, and then it feels just right) that is not burdened by any unnecessary frippery. It has an air-cooled twocylinder 90-degree V-twin engine, a five-speed gearbox, and one disc brake on each wheel. However, those disc brakes are by Brembo and give all the power and feel needed.

Moto Guzzi’s V7 Stone offers a heritage and riding experience that stirs the soul says Dave Britten. What it doesn’t have is any superfluous electronics (no ABS, no TCS, no riding modes), nor does it need them. Moto Guzzi trusts the rider to decide throttle opening and brake application. Of course, electronic ignition and fuel injection are modern certainties, and rightly so, but in most respects the bike is similar to (although much refined for longevity and serviceability) those of three decades ago. The instrumentation is simple, too, with the clear analogue speedo and tacho (the latter, funnily enough, has no redline marked, but

although the rev limiter cuts in at 7000rpm, you’d have to seriously ask why you’re treating the Guzzi so badly) complimenting the usual set of warning lights and the digital odometer/trip meter and clock/air temperature readout set into them. The Stone has a flat spot in the engine’s delivery just (and I mean just) off idle, but despite this being exacerbated by the high-ish first gear, once the cableoperated dry plate clutch with its broad engagement and light feel is released at anything north of 2000rpm, the torque, which tops out at 58Nm at 5000rpm, is surprisingly strong. I found that for practically any chosen rate of acceleration, short shifting through the close-ratio gearbox worked best. Keep the engine buzzing in the 3000 to 5000rpm zone, and brisk progress, and a feeling of unstoppable grunt, will reward you. This is not to compare the Stone to, say, a Japanese 750cc sports bike, or even a 600 - you do that at your peril, and you’re very much not the rider the Moto Guzzi deserves. No, where you should be comparing is with bikes aimed at a similar target market, and I offer

NAILING THE PEAT

T

rue talent was shown by 118 riders representing 27 schools at Nailing the Peat II and the riders nailed it! Yes it’s hard work and yes you learn a lot but hey that’s what it’s all about – experiencing something different and encouraging kids to ride for fun on a flat paddock. That’s what we do best I think, encourage new riders to come along and have a go. It’s flat, it’s soft and the classes are designed for even, fair racing. I think now after hosting seven school events, of which four have been on the peat, I can say loud and clear that this gives the kids coming through a chance to shine but also caters for all levels of riders. The venue is awesome for the spectators as they can see the whole track and the Wenn family let us use it for free, which means we can keep the entry fee down. To have 16 girls entered this year is outstanding. I admire these girls racing in a male dominated sport but they certainly shine on the peat – as well as on the podium. This year the Hauraki Plains College MX team donated 11 extra trophies to acknowledge the girls and just to show how awesome they are, the three Bouzaid sisters - Caprice, Yvette and Lillian - won the ‘WOW’ Trophy for outstanding sportsmanship and looking after each other on the track. Not to take it away from the boys, there were some very fast riders in the competitive class and they nailed the peat. All the classes had great, even racing and that’s what I want to see along with some very new kids to riding having a go in the beginners class. This, to me, is how you grow the sport, encourage them to have a go, if they fall off on the peat nine times out of ten they still get back up and keep riding. I hope great memories are built on our tracks and I guess the proof is in the pudding when we have our Ex-HPC riders coming back to support us, along with Gisborne and Wairoa school teams that haven’t missed an HPC event yet.

When I started this my vision was about giving kids some fun and focus – to focus on their school work first and then be rewarded with the fun. This isn’t about top MX riders – if they turn into that through what we do at HPC that’s great, but if they continue to ride at their own level that’s even better. This is schoolboy MotoX; there are plenty of club, national and international competitions out there for the serious riders. For the kids who just want to ride

their bikes and have some fun and stay focused at school, we’re here to host our rides to help build MX teams in schools so they can have as much fun and build the memories that HPC MX does. We also teach our MX team to ‘Pay it Forward’ hence the reason we ride with pink mohawks, not just so we can see them on the track but to recognise breast cancer. The team does a sterling job of paying it forward and are awesome at supporting

Dead Toad is alive The 40th running of the Waitemata Motorcycle Club’s Dead Toad Hare Scramble took place in Woodhill Forest.

T

he Dead Toad event has been run continuously by the club, in the same forest, for 40 years - albeit with different courses. The first three events were run on gravel roads but it was into the trees after that and that’s where it’s stayed for last 37 years. The course for 2014 was a 25km loop of single track, clear fell and some open sand tracks – all masterminded by Mark Draper and it was a ripper. The start was in a grassy paddock, which saw many riders taste the ground in the first few corners, with the leaders gone in a spray of sand. The pace up front was fierce and fast… very fast. When the flag came out it was KR tester Sam Greenslade on his Kawasaki KX250F who came in first, followed by another KR tester, Liam Draper on his Husqvarna TE125 in second, followed by Luke Mobberley on a GasGas EC125. I had decided that riding this event was something that had to be done. So, thanks to KTM and Chris Birch I had a KTM 350XCF – which was far more bike than I needed. Having not raced for seven years, I was under no illusions and treated the ride like a trail ride, trying to keep moving forward and not crashing. I had an awesome ride and after one lap I was done but so glad I had given it a go. I’m hoping to ride again next year because seeing several guys who had ridden the original event and were riding this one with even bigger grins on their faces, it shows that you only get old when you stop riding.

DEAD TADPOLE The Minis had the first race of the day, and it was all go from the flag until the end of the one and a half hours. The Minis all rode as hard as they could and didn’t want to stop – even for fuel, food or drink. It was awesome to see their enthusiasm and commitment. Jacob Refoy took the win on his Husqvarna TC85, with KR junior tester William HakiwaiMaikuku second on a Honda CRF100 and Riley Cargil in third on a KTM 65. The second race of the day was the Juniors and Ladies. The pace was fierce straight from the hooter and James Scott (Kawasaki KX100) grabbed the holeshot with Jake Wightman (KTM 125) in hot pursuit. At the end of the first lap Wightman had a slight lead, which was never headed. Close behind was a freight train consisting of Julie Greenslade (KTM 200), Natasha Cairns (KTM 200) and Daniel White Kawasaki KX125) with Scott close behind. With one lap to go Wightman was still out front with Julie Greenslade leading the charge. White managed to slip by to secure second place, and a hard charging Cairns grabbed third on the final lap. Action in the 10-12 Juniors was no less fierce, with Nick Wightman (KTM85) taking the class win. The Waitemata club is keen to see more minis and junior cross country events so keep an eye on their website.

Suzuki has taken its winning formula from 2014 and added Showa SFF-Air forks and a launch control system among a host of other tweaks. Jock and Sam were at the NZ launch.

S

uzuki NZ launched its 2015 RM-Z450 at the Pirini Motorbike Park MX track just south of Pongakawa, which is about 15 minutes East of Te Puke. The Pirini track is a fast-ish, flowing and bermed corner pumicebased track that is fun to ride. It has great jumps, some can be big, if you go hard enough and they’re safe. Along with a few rolling whoops and a couple of tighter turns. Really, the track has all you need to get a pretty good handle on how a new MX bike is going to work. And the sun was shining which made a welcome change from the abysmal weather in Auckland of late. Young Sammy Greenslade disappeared on the RM-Z before I even had a chance to get my gear on. So I wandered over to the track to check out the action. For those that don’t know, Sam is as strong as an Ox and brutalises a bike into total submission. He has a real penchant for demolishing berms and believes that forks should not compress under any circumstances when entering a turn. While that maybe a wee exaggeration, I was not surprised when he mentioned the forks seemed a little soft... From just watching the action, the suspension looked good, the motor certainly looked strong and the 450 sounded awesome. Quiet, but with a little bark. For 2015 Suzuki has given the 450 several important updates, but at just a glance it looks very similar to last year with a little bit of BNG (bold new graphics). The big news is the Showa SFF, three-chamber air fork that is 1100 grams lighter than last year. There’s been a serious chassis redesign to reduce weight, give more nimble handling and improve flexibility characteristics (to diminish harsh feedback to the rider). Then there’s the all new S-HAC, Suzuki’s Holeshot Assist Control button. There are three modes, standard, smooth and aggressive. The smooth mode, identified by a flashing light on the S-HAC button mounted on the handle bars, retards the ignition timing for 1.2 seconds or until you shift up to third gear and then returns to the standard map. This mode worked very well on hard packed, high traction starts and was noticeably easier to get smoothly off the line. The aggressive mode (fast flashing light) advances the ignition timing for 4.5 seconds after the start or until fourth gear, before returning to normal. This mode is very aggressive and gave wonderful drive in deep

loose soil. It absolutely trenched off the line, but was a real handful if the traction was high. Take the time to learn which mode works best where, and the S-HAC system will be a genuine advantage at start time. The standard start mode is a middle of the road setting that works quite well everywhere – as you might expect. The last big news is that Suzuki has made several alterations to the kick and decompression mechanisms for easier starting. The alterations have worked extremely well. The 450 starts effortlessly and is a huge improvement over last year’s bike. Finally, some changes to the plumbing have improved cooling efficiency. Suzuki has an excellent engine for 2015. It was great last year, but with a little more torque/horse power off the bottom, and more over rev, this year’s motor is a step up. The difference is mainly felt in the ride-ability because, with more torque from the bottom, the transition into the mid-range is smoother and the top end holds on a little longer which makes for a wide, strong, responsive and flexible power delivery. While not the strongest motor in every rev-band, I see this engine as the best, most complete motor in terms of race-ability of the Japanese big four this year. The shifting was good although I did notice that changing from second to third under load was sticky sometimes and the clutch got spongy, but could have been mainly down to many hard starts trying out the S-HAC device. The new air fork is a good thing. It works very well and the adjustability gives a wide range of options, which are as effective as changing springs in an older style fork but without the cost – or time involved. Suzuki runs zero kPa in the Outer chamber standard. This is a good move because for most riders they will only have to check the kPa in the top, Inner Chamber and the lower, Balance Chamber and simply bleed the Outer Chamber. When setting up the forks, get the bike up on a stand with the front wheel off the ground. Set the Inner Chamber first (standard is 1200kPa), then the Balance Chamber (standard is also 1200kPa). If you want a harder spring rate feel, put 1300kPa in the Inner chamber and then if you want harder still (Sammy…) you can add up to 130kPa in the outer chamber. Likewise dropping the kPa softens the spring rates. It is worth noting that air pressure has a more progressive character than the coil spring.

LAUNCH REPORT Words: Jock McLauchlan, Liam Draper Photos: Geoff Osborne

Among a host of other updates, both CRFs get this 2015’s must have paddock jewellery – air forks. Jock McLauchlan dug out his bicycle pump and went to Taupo.

H

onda chose to launch its 2015 CRF motocross line up at the Digger McEwen motocross park, Taupo. Up for testing were the 450 and 250 models. For the test ride we used the new Speedcross track, which is partly a Ben Townley initiative. BT admitted to having a huge passion for Supercross. So, as he helped unveil the new models with Honda Brand Manager Damien Smyth, he explained he wanted riders to have access to an entry level, fun and safe Supercross-style track to practice on and grow their skills. Hence the new Speedcross track. The track really is fun with its big table top jumps, rolling whoops, two tight-ish berms and two faster flat turns.

WHAT’S NEW For 2015 Honda has focused its energy on several updates for the 450. First up is a redesign of the cylinder head as well as the exhaust header pipe which now exits on the right hand side of the front down tube, reducing its length by a massive 320mm. All the gears barring first gear are now made from nickel chrome molybdenum and some strengthening has also been added to the crankcases. Then there are the big news items, including the all new Kayaba PSF2-Air fork, and a new shock that has all the damping adjusters at the top to make adjusting a doddle. There’s also the three-mode Engine Mode Select Button (EMSB) mounted on the bars, and an over-sized 260mm front disc. Minor changes include larger internal diameter for the twin mufflers and the latest Dunlop MX 52 tyres. New in the engine department for the 2015 250 is a higher compression ratio of 13.5:1 from the newly designed cylinder head, and altered intake porting. The frame is unchanged but a new Showa SFF-AIR-TAC fork shaves 1.3kg from the front end and gives a very light feel to the handling. The 250 also gets the 260mm front disc and more open muffler internals.

ENGINE MODE SELECT BUTTON Honda says the engine work on the 450 was done to enhance low-rpm power and increase peak output and is a direct result of HRC development. Overall, it didn’t feel a lot different to last year. It is still inclined to stall at very low rpm and so it is wise to keep the idle up. What is different are the EMSB power modes. While all three modes have that traditional

Taking the bike on an overseas tour, or buying or selling overseas? Want someone who knows bikes and knows how they should be handled?

Then call us-we have years of experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US....
