KIWI RIDER
ELLO... and welcome to the December issue of Kiwi Rider magazine. In the last issue we mentioned the sad passing of Aussie motorcycling legend, Warren Willing. With a colourful and successful career as racer, team manager and GP technician, Willing’s legacy will be well remembered. Turn to page 18 to learn more about this enigmatic Aussie. European bikes are very much in the frame this month, especially with the European motorcycle show on the horizon. Ducati’s Multistrada is the kind of bike that most of us would ride if we could only have one bike in the garage. It’ll handle any road and even manage light gravel road work without too much problem – and still throws down a sporty ride to boot. Turn to page 31 for more. Triumph certainly makes standout bikes, and perhaps none quite so stand out as the Rocket III Roadster.
It’s physically large and it’s the largest capacity mass production motorcycle too. It’s fair to say that our Jock isn’t into the cruiser genre but found himself quite won over by the muscle-bound Rocket, see page 36. Another bike on the Italian theme is the MV Agusta Stradale. It’s definitely a Marmite-styled machine but there’s no denying its raucous nature. Turn to page 24. Christmas is just around the corner, along with a new riding season. Looking to get a first bike or a new bike for your little ‘uns for this year? We’ve got you covered. Turn to page 79 for our kids’ bike buying guide to see where their next step could be. Remember the heady days of tearing around on a sports moped? So do we. We think we’ve found the fastest FS1E you’ll ever see. We’ve all been wishing it was the bike we rode as young motorcyclists. Turn to page 45 to dream a little. Enjoy the mag.

SUZUKI SERIES WARMING UP FOR SUMMER SHOWDOWN
H
by Andy McGechan
old your breath, buckle up your helmet, strap yourself down and brace for another glorious summer of superbike race action. The popular Suzuki Series is set to kick off again in December and Whanganui-based promoter Allan ‘Flea’ Willacy has already been run off his feet trying to process entries. A slew of international superstars have been inked into the series programme and more are on the way before the three-round series’ first race, set for Waikato’s undulating Hampton Downs Motorsport Park on Sunday, December 6. Round two is set for Manfeild, on the outskirts of Feilding, on Sunday, a week later on December 13, with the third and final round on the closed-off public streets of Whanganui on Boxing Day (December 26). Perhaps the most exciting news is that British sidecar pairing Tim Reeves (driver) and Patrick Farrance (swinger) will make their first trip to New Zealand and the dynamic duo will be bringing their championship-winning rig with them. They are five-time world champions and have also tasted success on the notorious Isle of Man, which may mean that, even without any previous experience racing on them, the New Zealand tracks will hold no fears for them. West Australian sidecar champions Des Harvey and Dirk Jeal will also add to the international flavour of this class, although they can expect to be severely tested by the elite Kiwi crews. It is big news also that defending Suzuki Series formula one class champion Horst Saiger, from the German-speaking principality of Liechtenstein, between Switzerland and Austria, is returning and he will again ride the big 1000cc Kawasaki for the Hamilton-based Red Devil Racing Team. Saiger’s team-mate, Swiss superbike champion Roman Stamm, from Switzerland, will make the trip to New Zealand this summer, the two men in hot form after finishing third in the world endurance championships. With Whakatane’s Tony Rees also entered again, it means the international contingent can expect a hot reception. Rees is a former New Zealand superbike champion and a multi-time winner of the Boxing Day
Liechtenstein racer Horst Saiger, coming back to defend his Suzuki Series crown spectacular around Whanganui’s famous Cemetery Circuit, the traditional finale to the Suzuki Series. New Zealand’s former Isle of Man winner Sean ‘Gremlin’ Harris, of New Plymouth, will be a crowd favourite too, along with fellow Kiwi internationals Avalon Biddle and Connor London and extremely talented Whanganui racer Jayden Carrick. Isle of Man resident and racer Billy Redmayne, who won the Manx Grand Prix 600cc class and became a lap record holder there this year, will be riding for a Kawasaki for the Biggles Racing Team in the formula two class. Redmayne, a British Army paratrooper, is no stranger to the New Zealand race tracks, making dozens of friend when he raced here last season. Expatriate Kiwi John Woodley, now resident in Australia, will race in the Bears (non-Japanese bikes) class, while Japan’s Yoshi Kishimoto will arrive to race in the formula two class. In addition, popular Porirua racer Glen Skachill makes a welcome return to the sport, while the rapid rise of Taupo youngster Roman Rajek will be worth plotting during the series. Isle of Man racer Dan Kneen and Germany’s Thomas Kreutz have yet to confirm their entries, but they will have to be quick with spaces on the starting grid filling up rapidly. The Suzuki Series is the first big hit-out for the racers ahead of the four-
NEW SUZUKI HAYABUSA
W
ord out of Japan is that Suzuki is planning to release a revamped version of the current GSX1300R Hayabusa with the engine displacement increased to 1500cc in a bid to match Kawasaki’s supercharged H2 as the world’s fastest accelerating production motorcycle. The original Hayabusa, released in 1999, is still listed as the world fastest production motorcycle in terms of top speed, able to achieve 300km/h. Indeed, the New Zealand open displacement motorcycle speed record was set at Matai Road, Edendale by Timaru’s John Hepburn on a Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa, on Saturday February 5, 2000. He achieved an average of 307.447km/h. Fears of a European backlash against this sort of speed resulted in an
informal agreement among motorcycle manufacturers to limit top speed of production machines to 300km/h – to which even the monstrously powerful supercharged Kawasaki H2 is limited. However, the thing is, the Kawasaki can reach that top speed in half the time it takes the Hayabusa – hence the rumours that Suzuki is aiming to win back bragging rights by using greater engine displacement. Since its 1999 release, the Hayabusa has undergone very little change. In 2007 it received a make over and in 2013 it gained ABS braking and Brembo calipers. However, whether Suzuki will reveal the new Hayabusa for 2016, or wait for a year after it launches a completely new GSX-R1000 superbike, is uncertain.
PROTECTA YOUR BIKE WITH AGREED VALUE
M
otorcycle Insurance specialist Protecta has made big changes to its policies that should benefit all its current and future customers. Rather than getting ‘market value’ for their machines, customers will benefit from ‘agreed value’. The benefit is if your bike is written off or stolen you’ll receive a pre-determined value for your bike, rather than the value dropping through the course of the policy – as your bike depreciates. So you’ll be paid out the value the bike is insured for rather
than what the market value would determine, which can only be a good thing. Protecta offers policies for Full Cover; Third Party, Fire and Theft; Fire, Theft and Transit, as well as Storage Cover. Full Cover benefits include riding apparel cover, 24/7 roadside assistance, track day, 12-month new for old, completion of journey, rebates for ‘Ride Forever’ training and discounts for experienced riders. Call 0800 PROTECT or visit www.protectainsurance.co.nz for more information on the new policies.

W Warren Brian Willing Jun 22, 1952 – Sep 5, 2015
The last of the poster boys of 1970s Australian racing is gone. After a lengthy battle with cancer, Warren Willling, died at 1am on Saturday, September 5 in Sydney, Australia.
illing had a major influence on racing in both Australia and New Zealand in his competitive years and later left his mark on world racing in his technical role with Kenny Roberts’ Yamaha Grand Prix team, guided Roberts’ son Kenny Junior to the World 500 Championship in 2000 with Suzuki, worked for KTM, then re-joined Team Roberts when it was racing a V5 Honda in its own frame in 2006. What most did not know was that Willing had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in that period and underwent fairly aggressive treatment to deal with it. He had regular checkups and it appeared the cancer was gone, but several years later it had metastasised and was in his bones. At this time he was often in considerable pain, and had to resort to pain-killing medication. Climbing stairs was by now impossible and he began to suffer bone fractures from routine events, such as bending over in the shower. Those close to him wondered how he managed to not only carry on but to remain positive throughout. Willing’s legacy in racing is immense. Willing and the late Gregg Hansford were literally the poster boys of Australian racing in the early to mid-1970s and helped swell crowds at events right around their homeland. Willing got started in racing on a modified Suzuki A100, moved up to a 250cc T20 Suzuki then made the switch to Yamaha two-stroke twins. In late-1972 Willing and future brotherin-law Murray Sayle used the prize money from winning the 250 Production class in the then fledgling Castrol Six-Hour race to fly to New Zealand for a series of races in the summer. Mike Sinclair, who was to have Willing work alongside him in Kenny Roberts’ team almost two decades later, recalls that the 20-year-old Willing had a Yamaha TD3 (aircooled predecessor to the TZ250) tuned to run on methanol. “It was a very fast bike and he obviously knew a thing or two about set up and he could ride it,” Sinclair observes. At the time the Kiwi was racing one of the then new water-cooled Suzuki TR500s and “I remember that Warren’s 250 was just as fast as my 500. Very impressive!” It was while in New Zealand that Willing met expatriate Englishman Ron Grant, then a US Suzuki racer. Grant was a gregarious fellow with a love of racing and life generally. That was the catalyst that gave Willing the ambition to race in the USA, and then Europe. Back in Australia, Willing attracted sponsorship from jeans brand Levi Strauss and was nicknamed the Red Rocket by the Sydney advertising agency responsible for the Levi’s account. A considerable amount of advertising material,
including posters, was based around Willing and the Levi’s Yamaha’s four-cylinder TZ750. At the time Gregg Hansford was also racing for Yamaha so the two young, blond Aussies became the poster boys of Australian racing. Their head-to-head battle on Yamaha TZ750s at Bathurst in the Australian Unlimited Grand Prix on April 14, 1974 is part of racing folklore Downunder, decided in the final run to the chequered flag in favour of Willing. In their titanic 1974 battle, they lopped almost nine seconds off the lap record at the Bathurst track. Willing’s name is also part of Castrol SixHour race history. With no Yamaha suitable for the Unlimited class, he raced his own 1972 Kawasaki H2 (or Mach IV) 750 triple and for three successive years had the two-stroke at the head of the field before dropping places due to extra fuel stops for the thirsty triple, a worn rear tyre, and on the last occasion an ignition problem. His best finish there was second place in 1973 with 18-year-old Kiwi rider John Boote sharing the ride.
I always liked working with guys who knew more than me because you keep learning that way - and Warren taught me plenty In between its Six-Hour Production racing assignments, Willing also campaigned the same Kawasaki in modified form in the first Superbike races in the world – the Chesterfield Superbike Series run at Sydney’s Amaroo Park. This was to have an influence on American racing as in 1974 Willing supplied a set of the Australian rules to California’s Steve McLaughlin, who with the help of journalist John Ulrich and his wife Trudy, re-worked them and supplied them to Gavin Trippe and Bruce Cox, then the promoters of the Champion Spark Plugs 200 event at Laguna Seca. Trippe and Cox wanted to institute a modified Production Class race at Laguna Seca to provide more variety in the programme which was dominated by Yamaha 250 twin and 750 four cylinder two-strokes. Thus Superbike racing was introduced to the USA and years later, McLaughlin, with a New Zealand company, would establish the first ever Superbike World Championship. So in a way Willing had an influence on the future shape of American racing, but at the time he was too busy racing in Australia and fitting as many US events into his schedule as possible to notice. He and Hansford – and a great many other star riders from around the world – went to the USA in early 1974

Stradale by name... fun and funky by nature. Jock McLauchlan falls for an Italian with quirky looks.
I
t’s not often I get to go anywhere posh with Kiwi Rider. The typical scenario is a warm sandwich for lunch at the side of a motocross track, so an afternoon at the rather civilised, historic Riverhead Hotel for a lovely coffee, a chin wag and a posh lunch was something I didn’t need asking twice about. Oh, and I got to throw a leg over three new MV Agusta models while I was at it. The three machines on offer were the all new Turismo Veloce and Stradale, plus a very bling looking Dragster. The Veloce is a sports adventure style bike, while the Stradale is more of a sports touring machine and lastly the Dragster is, well, like a sports Dragster. All the bikes run MV’s raucous 800cc triple engine, but with various engine tunes and each has a distinctly individual chassis/layout. Each of the machines felt quick and exciting to ride, but because we were fortunate
enough to take the Stradale away for several days of testing, this is the bike I’ll concentrate on here (we’ll cover the others in detail in an upcoming issue). I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but there’s no question that the Stradale is an unusual looking beast, but I think it looks cool in a quirky way. It certainly has innovative design features that are clever, a little outside the box and probably polarise opinion. The tail lights built into the panniers are a good example (when the panniers are removed the ‘normal’ tail lights function automatically). The panniers also have combination locks that lock the zip pull tabs, a good system in theory, but fiddly in use, and size-wise they’re too small to hold a practical amount of gear. I guess rolling up on a MV with a bottle of wine in one side and a small bunch of flowers in the other is all ‘Luigi’ might need to clinch the deal. Hopping on the Stradale and it’s immediately obvious the seat is tall - a rather towering
870mm in fact. The upside is this offers plenty of leg room yet still keeps the pegs high for great cornering clearance. Shorter riders are still catered for with an optional 20mm lower seat being available. Oddly, when considering the excellent legroom the handlebars are very close, meaning the riding position is almost bolt upright - I almost felt as though I had to lean backwards to get enough arm room. Small riders will love the general riding position, except their feet will struggle to reach the ground when stationary (without the lower seat option anyway). It’s just all a little bit different, but it doesn’t take long to adapt. The screen is height-adjustable with one hand on the move and, despite looking narrow, is quite effective at keeping the windblast off. The 798cc DOHC liquid-cooled three-cylinder motor has a six speed gearbox and is a powerful and high-tech beast. The triple-pot engine produces a healthy 115hp at 11,000rpm and 78.5Nm of torque at 9000rpm. Those
numbers do give a fair indication of what to expect from the power delivery, and yes, it’s quite highly strung with an impressive exhaust note and a wicked top-end, but that is not quite the whole story. The Stradale still makes decent power in the lower part of the rev range. The fuelling is crisp and clean above 3000rpm and is surprisingly torquey at less than half throttle openings. However, above half throttle the Stradale is seriously quick and it doesn’t take much to get you very rapidly into licence-losing territory... and beyond! Of course, as befitting a premier-level Italian machine there is also a host of electronic rider options. There are four power levels (Rain, Normal, Sport and Custom) which grace the MV triple, plus three ‘response’ maps, two torque curves, two levels of engine braking effect, an eight-level traction control and, lastly, a soft or hard cut option for the rev limiter... but wait, I almost forgot, there’s more... a quick-shifter also does the clutch/gear business for you,
if you suddenly forget how. While the quickshifter is a cool thing to play around with, I’m not sure it is of any real benefit to a road rider, unless you’re lazy. I won’t pretend I’ve tried every single possible engine option as its been very wet of late, but I will say I don’t like the hard cut rev setting on the limiter, or the TC set close to ‘8’ which has the most intervention, and I think sport mode seems fine for general riding to me. To sum up, this is a great motor. It is fast and exciting to ride while still being reasonably user-friendly even in an aggressive mode but if you do want it super mellow, then just dial it up. Like the engine, the handling on the Stradale is exciting too. The rider sits very much toward the front of the bike, so it feels as though you
are going around the corner on top of the front wheel. This means the turn-in is very quick and there’s a slightly edgy feel. The handling bias definitely favours agility over stability. Don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t mean the MV is unstable in any way; the single sided swingarm at 607mm is longer than that of the Rivale and the rake is quite relaxed at 25.5 degrees. This means instability is never an issue, however it can still feel reasonably ‘busy’. Put it this way, there’s never any trouble hitting that next tight apex - sometimes almost too easily. Around town the steering is nicely weighted and reasonably effortless. I’d say the Stradale feels willingly agile, but because it’s tall it’s slightly awkward at very low speed because of that height. Above first gear it’s a great cut and

The 2015 Multistrada has more electronics than you can shake a stick at... and it even has a ‘SkyHook’.

omehow I always seem to draw the short straw and miss out when it comes to Ducati tests but when the Ed handed me the keys to the fire-engine red Ducati Multistrada there was no holding me back! I have a feeling he was testing me as well as getting me to test the new bike. You see, I tend to like things simple... and the new Multistrada is a somewhat complex machine. Actually, strike that, it is staggeringly complex; the new Multistrada has more whizz-bangs than bonfire night.

here’s no question over whether this bike makes a bold statement. The Triumph Rocket III is the biggest and the most bad-arse production cruiser on the market today. This is the alpha male, a big silverback if you will. It’s a genuine hard-man, hairy chest icon of a machine and dare I say it... to be man enough the rider may need to be hairy-arsed as well. Some have even suggested it’s a minimum requirement. I’m not convinced... but perhaps they’re right? After all it
is eight feet long (I measured), has a 2.3 litre engine, weighs 367kg with fuel and has a huge 240/50-16 rear tyre. The Rocket III motor capacity alone is larger than the sum of two small-capacity car engines. Although what’s even more impressive, is that the engine is larger than what powers a heap of decent sized SUVs too! Yep, this machine is a beast. But, given its true hugeness in both engine and chassis, it is surprisingly mild-mannered. However, don’t for a moment think it’s the soft option – this is the real deal. The liquid-cooled, in-line, DOHC three-cylinder

lump displaces a huge 2294cc to be exact. The Hinkley-built bruiser muscles out 148hp at 5750rpm and a staggering 221Nm of torque at a seriously low 2750rpm. These numbers might suggest a lot of go but that doesn’t quite cover it. Open the Rocket III’s throttle and a serious response is immediate, it punches forward hard with genuine enthusiasm. After that initial punch the Triumph surges on strongly, yet in a completely manageable way. For a huge, heavy motorcycle with a lot of weight over the front end, it is not that difficult to encourage the front
wheel to leave the ground – such is the amount of torque. This should give some indication of the grunty thrust this triple churns out by the truck load. Thankfully, while it is powerful, for the experienced rider it’s not an intimidating experience. It is somewhat of a gentle, if muscular, giant. The actual power delivery is smooth but not boring smooth, that charismatic triple character is always there. While there is massive torque, the engine is slow-ish revving with that heap of engine mass to wind up to speed. So, it’s not as effortlessly flexible in use as one might

One change often leads to another when you start fiddling with your bike. Mark Griffiths made a few small changes to this FS1E six years ago and hasn’t stopped since. We reckon the end result is the fastest air-cooled FS1E in the UK.

his pretty little FS1E isn’t just a moped, it’s a journey; a trip into what can be achieved when you put your mind to something. Every journey has a beginning and an end, it’s the bit in the middle which provides the adventure. Heading off the beaten track can have its moments with a few dead ends, but Mark’s journey didn’t have too many false leads. The journey began in 2009 when Mark found a scruffy Yamaha FS1E, “I’d just finished restoring a popsicle purple FS1E back to original, and what should have been an enjoyable restoration actually ended up being the opposite, the icing on the nasty cake was when my fuel tank sprung a leak within days of being professionally repainted. It had to go...” Mark is no stranger to 1970s mopeds, he owned a Suzuki AP50 when he was 16, which led him to restore one he found in the small ads back in 2004. After owning a FS1E and an AP50 at the same time Mark was torn; he liked the extra speed the AP50 could offer but preferred the FS1E’s appearance, “I had a few ideas on how to release some extra poke from the FS1E’s engine, so decided my next project wasn’t going to be a faithful restoration – I’d been there and done that.” The scruffy donor bike was purchased in an ‘as is’ condition before being taken apart for a quick makeover. Mark’s ‘quick’ makeover involved a new paint scheme and a few mods to the engine but neither quite went according to plan, “The bodywork was sent away to a friend who was going to respray it black but

I quipped to Gerardo Otzen (my Chilean tour partner) a couple of years ago that “We will be doing Harley tours here before long!” Well... fast forward a few years and the inaugural Rosco’s Rocky Road Tarmac Tour was born. The Tour is designed for couples to enjoy their motorcycle together and to visit many destinations throughout Chile and Argentina that most people only dream about, or possibly have never heard of. Raewyn and I were geared up to take our 2006 Harley Davidson Ultra CVO up into the Atacama and experience the driest desert in the world, as well as the sub-tropical rain forests of Northern Argentina. We put the word out about the adventure and got a couple from Auckland who were keen to

TOWNLEY TO MAKE GP RETURN?
T

auranga’s Ben Townley is apparently looking at making a return to World Championship Motocross – if rumours swirling out of Europe are to be believed. And the most popular rumour is he could possibly join Stefan Everts’ Suzuki motocross team in a vacant seat following the retirement of long-time Suzuki team owner Sylvain Geboers. Although Townley strenuously denied he was planning a GP return during an interview at the final round of the 2015 World Motocross Championships at Glen Helen in the USA, it is understood he started looking at options after scoring 6-2 finishes in the MX1 class at the Motocross of Nations at Ernée in France. This compares with his 1-2 finishes in the MX3 class at the same track in 2005. Back then he was coming off his fourth season of world championship racing. This year he has been serving as a riding advisor/ coach for Honda Racing Corporation’s All-Japan Championship team so is not as ‘match fit’ as he was in 2005. Yet he managed to beat many of the established European stars at the same track this past September, which it is understood led Everts to chase him for his signature on a Suzuki factory contract for 2016.
WHITAKER IN A CLASS OF HIS OWN
T

he national moto trials championship win record has been broken and, if Jake Whitaker has anything to do with it, that record will be broken again a few more times yet. The 24-yearold Wellington furniture polisher was again simply too slick for his rivals at the 2015 Farmlands New Zealand Moto Trials Championships in Taranaki, winning all three days of Expert Grade competition over the Labour Weekend. It was the eighth time Whitaker has won the Expert Grade outright, placing him alone at the top of the sport. Before the weekend began, he had been level with Napier’s Warren Laugesen as a seven-time champion but Laugesen is nowadays concentrating on an entirely different motorcycling code – enduro racing – and he was a no-show in Taranaki at the weekend. Whitaker has also been branching out and tackling enduro events and he believes it is perhaps his enduro experiences in recent months that have given him added strength, making him a more rounded sportsman and certainly a more aggressive rider. He was fierce and fearless as he tackled each of the courses marked out at three separate venues over the weekend – at Inglewood on Saturday, Egmont Village on Sunday and Opunake on Monday. Runner-up was Rotorua’s John Haynes, with New Plymouth’s Matt Foster rounding out the expert grade podium. “The first day was fairly easy, although there were quite a few water sections that were a bit tricky,” Whitaker explained. “With riders going through the sections ahead of me, the water was stirred up and it was tough to see where all the rocks were. They were very slippery too. “I lost a few points, but, thankfully, not as many as my rivals,” he laughed. “Monday was especially fun because it was dry and I enjoy the big rock sections.” Whitaker won his first national moto trials championship at the age of 15 and since then has continued to reap rewards, competing on the international circuit and twice winning the Australian Moto Trials Championship, in 2010 and 2012. Other championship class winners at the weekend were Nelson’s Stephen Oliver (presidents’ grade, over-40 years); 11-year-old Dylan Ball, of Wellington (junior grade, under-17); Christchurch’s Stefanie Downes (women’s grade); Rangiora’s Paul Jackson (post classic/twin shock). Support class winners were Nelson’s Peter Oliver (A Grade); Auckland’s Peter Boettcher (intermediate) and Jason Day (clubman).

PAHIATUA RIDER WINS FINAL WOMEN’S SHOWDOWN
W
ith just one race remaining in the senior women’s grade, there was virtually nothing to separate Pahiatua’s Letitia Alabaster from Motueka’s Katie Silcock at the top of the points standings, with Taihape’s Sarah Elwin and Te Puke’s Mary Wanhill also not far behind. Whoever finished ahead after this final race at Opunake would be the 2015 champion at the Mach 1 Yamaha-sponsored event and, with rain and wind getting stronger by the minute, the key to winning would be getting a great start. And that’s just what Alabaster did,
snatching the lead within a few hundred metres and then stretching out her advantage, although a fast-starting Skye Edwards, from Nelson, kept her honest over the opening two laps. Her main rival, Silcock, was forced to battle through traffic after an unaccustomed poor start and, although she managed to close in on Alabaster near the end, she ran out of time before the chequered flag came out and had to settle for runner-up in that race and also runner-up for the championship overall. Elwin took the third podium spot for the senior women’s championship with Wanhill and Whangarei’s Zia Pitkethley rounding out the top five. “I was two points behind Katie (Silcock) at the start of the day

today and knew I just had to win races today,” said Alabaster, a 26-year-old motorcycle mechanic. “I just had to do my best and not fall off trying. I took a few risks in the first race today and managed to win it (with 21-year-old motherof-two Silcock finishing second) and that meant I was leading the championship, but only by one point with the final race to come. “Once I had the lead in the final race, I just played it safe. I’m so stoked to win this.” The other title winners at the weekend were Te Awamutu’s Rachael Archer (junior women); Cambridge’s Sandra Hannon (veteran women’s class); Woodend’s Ben Petrie (veterans’ 30-24 years); New Plymouth’s Lionel Crowe (veterans’ 35-39 years under-200cc

ack in 2012 we tested what was Ben Townley’s race bike at the time, a Kawasaki KX450F. It’s fair to say the bike was a real weapon. At the time I didn’t have the skill, ability or strength to ride it anywhere near its potential; it was just too much bike for me. Three years on, Townley has moved onto Honda and he has given Kiwi Rider the opportunity to test another one of his race bikes. This time it is the CRF450R which Ben took the Tarawera 100 outright win on. I was half expecting this bike to be tamed down, with a mellowed power curve for Cross-Country use, despite the standard 2015 CRF450R having a very versatile motor. It didn’t take much more than a minute in the seat to find out this wasn’t the case; the bike is a complete weapon and there has been no attempt to tame it down. In
fact they’ve gone searching for more power on Ben’s bike... and found a lot. Once again, I’d say it’s more than I can handle or ride comfortably... there is just so much torque in the motor I was continuously misjudging my braking points and messing up turns. With only a few laps on the bike I was really questioning how Ben manages to ride the bike so well in the trees with all that power. It is a credit to his skill and ability to be able to use all that power. Although this is, obviously, a completely different bike to the KX-F I rode previously, the bike’s set-up feels oddly familiar. The bars, which are now ODI, feel like a similar bend to the Renthal bars on Ben’s previous bike, and the levers, bars and bar mounts are all positioned in the same way. Even the ride height feels very similar, and will be a standard setting on any bike Ben rides. What’s definitely not standard, and one of the parts I most enjoyed on Ben’s bike, was the HRC Racing

Fresh from a win at the Tarawera 100, BT handed his bike over to Sam Greenslade and explained how the Tarawera 100 was won.
Riding Ben’s Tarawera winning bike was an eyeopening experience into how fast riders at the top level must be travelling
front brake caliper. The HRC part gives amazing feel to the front brake. Where the standard unit can be abrupt in its action, the factory-part caliper is very progressive, with a huge level of predictability. Aside from awesome performance, which you need with so much power on tap, the caliper itself looks super trick with the polished billet finish. After feeling how powerful the motor was I wasn’t at all surprised to find that the suspension set up is also relatively stiff in comparison to a stock CRF, or a bike that has been used in a Cross-Country race. There is no doubt that this is a motocross set up and, for me, the front feels like it is too firm in the initial stroke. But with the speed that Ben pushes the bike, I’m sure the extra firmness would be spot on. In the rear, the shock felt spot on. I have a few kg over Ben so, although I wasn’t pushing it anywhere near as hard as him, I would say my extra weight helped give me some added comfort. Speaking of the rear shock, Ben’s
bike was equipped with an HSL holeshot linkage. This link pulls down the rear of the bike like a holeshot clip would do on the front. So for his start at the Tarawera, Ben had both his front and rear holeshot clips engaged. This significantly lowered the bike making kick starting for the dead-engine-start a lot easier. Of course by the time he got to the first turn both devices had disengaged and the ride height and suspension were back to normal, allowing Ben to claim the race win. Riding Ben’s Tarawera winning bike was an eye-opening experience into how fast riders at the top level must be travelling to make these race machines work - especially a motocross set-up in some very tough cross-country conditions. It’s not a set-up that would work for me, unless the track was very fast and smooth. It was however a great experience in seeing what top riders set-ups are like, and is a good indication of how I could set my bike up as my riding skills progress.
