SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND...?
DEC 16
The first showing of next year’s bikes in Germany shows there’s plenty to be excited about for 2017.
It’s not often that our Jock raves about a road bike, but Aprilia’s 1100 Factory has seen him come over all funny...

ELLO... and welcome to the December issue of Kiwi Rider. Weekends. For most of us it’s what we live for. Turning off the computer or putting down the tools, there’s nothing better than having a weekend ahead. Why just go out for a Sunday ride when getting away on a bike for the whole weekend can turn a hum-drum couple of days with the in-laws into an amazing 48-hour adventure. Our most recent weekend escape was a lap around Mt Ruapehu on Kawasaki’s Versys 1000 and 650. Turn to page 48 for more. Advertisers often say their bikes can win out of the crate but that’s often advertising hyperbole. But this month we found that Yamaha’s 2017

YZ450F can genuinely win with no mods other than clicker adjustments. Ok, so it had our tester Liam Draper on board who has more talent in his litte finger than most of us have in our whole bodies but, still, he’d never ridden a 450F before. Head to page 84 for more info on Yamaha’s 2017 big-bore four-stroke. The European shows have kicked off with the Intermot show in Germany. Manufacturers have been showing their latest bikes for the coming year. There’s plenty to get excited about with most makers showing new machines. There’ll be more to come too, because they often save a few new models for the EICMA show in Italy. We’ll keep you up to date on what’s coming. Enjoy the mag. BEN WILKINS

Bruce wants to go faster
W
e’ve just had a new book cross our desk at KR Towers. Aimed at kids, and those young at heart, ‘Bruce wants to go Faster’ is about Kiwi racing legend Bruce McLaren. Part of the ‘Inspiriational Kiwis’ series of books telling the stories of prominent Kiwis on the World stage, the new book joins author (and motorcyclist) Dreydon Sobanja’s other titles in the series, Ed Climbs a Big Hill and Jean Dreams of Flying. The aim is to inspire young Kiwis to dream big and, of course, remind the world exactly what Kiwis with a dream can do. From our brief look through
it’s beautifully illustrated and a great read – did you know Bruce dreamt of racing motorcycle speedway as a child? We’ll review the book in more detail in the next issue, which would make a perfect Christmas gift for the young and not-soyoung alike.

2016 MotoGP - Superbike Support Class Kiwis
N
ew Zealand Superbike champion Sloan Frost and Christchurch’s Ryan Hampton had a busy weekend at Phillip Island in late October. It’s always a big ask to get up to a competitive pace at the one of the world’s fastest circuits and with the limited track time on offer over MotoGP weekend, it was made all the more so by inclement, and changing, weather conditions. With the rain beginning to fall heavily a few minutes after the qualifying session began, all competitors’ first flying lap was their quickest. Frost said he could feel the traction diminishing in the later part of that first lap. Mindful that this was likely his only chance to get a reasonable time, he gritted his teeth and let it hang out a little to ease over the line for the fourth quickest time. Hampton securing 7th in the 15-man field. Frost pulled out of the wet first race when he discovered a dangerous lack of grip from the rear tyre. Later, the problem was traced to the tyre people mounting the tyre the wrong way around. Hampton rode to finish 7th. The race was won by Yamaha-mounted Josh Waters. The weekend’s four races were cut to three when Friday’s proceedings were called early because of abysmal weather. So the next race was run Saturday afternoon. The Kiwi pair finished 7th and 8th with Frost getting pipped by Australian Cru Halliday on the run to the line. Frost was having problems with his traction control but managed to best Hampton whose pace dropped away over the final three laps. This was one of the best races of the weekend with the Hondas of Jamie Stauffer and Troy Herfoss sandwiching
Plenty of support from the Kiwi Rider TNT MotoGP tourists race one winner Waters over the line. In the final race Frost, with a new traction control sensor sourced an hour’s drive from the circuit, managed a 6th placed finish. Hampton was 8th after being in contention for the first couple of laps before his tyre deteriorated and he lost contact with the group ahead. The weekend’s event was won by Team Apex Motorsports, Josh Waters (1, 1, 2) with Crakt Protein Honda’s (2, 2, 1) Jamie Stauffer claiming the Phillip Island Championship overall. Hampton took 9th and Frost 12 of the 29 points scorers in the championship. The Suzuki-mounted pair chalked the weekend up to experience and something to learn from as they both intend returning to the island.
Ryan Hampton is now doing most of his racing in Australia

NEW METAL 2017
Words: Ben Wilkins
The Intermot show held in Germany was the scene of the first show of the new riding season with most manufacturers showing updated machines for 2017. There’s plenty to get excited about by the looks of things, next year is shaping up well for new metal. APRILIA
Tuono 1100RR & 1100 Factory Aprilia’s performance naked gets a heap of upgrades for 2017. Both bikes get a completely re-designed electronics package based around the new Bosch 9.1MP system, borrowed from the RSV4 (see RSV4 for details). Brakes and suspension are upgraded to the latest versions from the RSV4 models and the engine has gearbox and piston tweaks. The Factory model gets Ohlins NIX suspension and steering damper as well as a seat unit from the RSV4. An infotainment system allows voice commands and incoming/outgoing calls on a smartphone. RSV4RR & RF New suspension, electronics, brakes, down-shift auto-blipper and... a joystick. The joystick makes the menus easier to navigate, while the other trick new bits make the bike faster around a track – to the tune of one second (according to Aprilia). The electronics incorporate the new Bosch 9.1MP system and include traction control, wheelie control, launch control, up/down quick-shifter, pit-lane speed limiter, cruise control, lean-sensitive ABS and anti-stoppie technologies. A new infotainment system allows voice commands and incoming/outgoing calls via your smarthpone. The RF model gets upgraded Ohlins NIX forks and the latest TTX rear shock, as well as forged aluminium wheels.
BMW
R Nine T Two new models of BMW’s modular retro machine have been shown – the Racer and Pure. Both bikes are based around the EuroIV compliant 1170cc boxer engine, which makes 81kW (108hp). BMW describes the Pure as a “purist roadster” for riding on country roads. For us, the Racer is the looker of the two. The short half fairing, seat cowl, low bars and rearset footrests give it a classic racer styling. Wire wheels are an optional extra, which would make it look very sweet. K1600GT Modded for 2017, BMW’s six-cylinder tourer now features Dynamic ESA which gives fully-automated damping adjustment as you ride, taking account of surface and riding conditions. Suspension preload can be remotely adjustable from the bars. The bodywork has been tweaked to provide more weather protection for rider and passenger. There’s a raft of optional extras including Reverse-Assist using the starter motor button, clutchless shifting via Shift-assist and an Intelligent Emergency Call system.

KIWI RIDER
S1000RR, R & XR The three machines based around the S1000 powerplant get updates for 2017. The S1000RR gets tweaks to meet EuroIV as well as different colour options and comes as standard with a seat cowl. An optional ‘passenger package’ is available as a free option. The R model naked gains 5hp and loses 2kg. An Akrapovic silencer comes fitted as standard and new bars reduce vibration. The all-road XR machine gains a few hp, benefits from anti-vibration handlebars (something we’re glad to see) and gets a 10kg increase in maximum payload. There’s also a new (and rather natty) blue colour scheme.
DUCATI
Supersport Based around the 937cc Testastretta engine, the new 210kg bike puts the Supersport name back into Ducati’s stable, bridging the gap between the touring/street machines and the race-ready Panigale. The Supersport motor makes 85.8kW (115hp) of power and 96.7Nm of torque. There are three riding modes, traction control, ABS and full-colour TFT display. There’s the standard model and an ‘S’ model which features Ohlins suspension and Ducati’s quick-shift system.
HONDA
Fireblade SP & SP2 Are Fireblades like buses? We’ve been waiting for a new Fireblade forever and all of a sudden two come along. Obvious styling cues come from the MotoGP machine but the spec looks good too. Honda claims the Fireblade SP is 14kg (yes, 14kg!) lighter than the outgoing model and the engine makes 11hp more. There’s a five-axis IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and a nine-setting traction-control and anti-wheelie. As standard there’s anti-rear wheel lift, ABS and a up/down quick-shifter and slipper clutch, and Ohlins semi-active suspension. The track-spec SP2 model features carbon bodywork, lighter Marchesini wheels and the engine can also take the race-kit parts including pistons, bigger valves etc. CB1100RS & EX Two versions of the CB1100 have been shown by Honda in Germany, the RS and EX. With 18-inch wire wheels and more basic suspension, the EX (lower pic) is the heritage cruising machine. The RS (upper pic) comes with cast 17-inch wheels and more performance oriented bouncy bits – remote reservoir rear shocks and 43mm Showa forks. The engine gets a slipper clutch and the intake and exhaust side of things have been tweaked, as has the fuel tank for a better riding position.

2016 Aprilia Tuono Words: Jock McLunchlan / Photos: Geoff Snackborne
1100 FACTORY
T
est bikes come and go continually here at KR, but few cause a stir among the troops like the Aprilia Tuono Factory model. Take the Ed as just one example. A some-time battle-hardened and successful Aprilia racer in a past-life, he was openly drooling and lusting at the prospect of giving the 1100 Factory a right old seeing to... In truth it is difficult to write dispassionately about the Tuono because it is, clearly, incredibly good. But while some say this is currently the most stunningly capable naked sports bike on the planet, does that make it an equally great road bike? Before we dive into answering that question... a few details. The new 1077cc engine is similar to the RSV4 lump in the Italian company’s RSV4 superbike, and the old 1000cc Tuono. It is still a 65 degree V4 that is liquid-cooled, has twin overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, with a six speed gearbox, slipper clutch and a speed-shifter. The Tuono has always been delivered in a slightly different state of tune compared to the RSV4; mainly resulting in a more road-suitable power delivery (stronger
midrange) and slightly reduced top end power. However, the new motor has been enlarged with more torque in mind, for further increased flexibility on the road with each bore size going from 78 to 81mm. An added bonus is that the peak hp has also jumped up to 175hp at 1100rpm while maximum torque is a more than handy (think huge) 120Nm at 9000rpm. Also new are the smaller, now 36mm rod pins and the cutting edge Pankl con-rods are lighter by a total of 400g. Ride-by-wire electronics control the four Weber-Morelli 48mm throttle bodies and injectors, as well as the fantastic power delivery management electronics. Of course, there are different power modes, S for sport, T for track and R for race. Basically... in all modes it goes like a bat out of hell, it’s just some of those bats are faster than others; from seriously fast right through to simply astonishing. Hit the starter button and the feral, almost angry but oh-so-cool sounding V4 bursts into life... honestly you could sell this sound, it’s that cool. At very low revs the engine is at its worst, being a whisker abrupt and a little lumpy – but I’m talking about from when the throttle is first cracked open to just above idle. From then on,

Black is the new Retro-modern is the latest factory fashion and with the Bonneville T120 Black, Triumph Motorcycles has turned out yet another outstanding ‘classic’.
T
he Triumph Bonneville has been around now, in one form or another, for over 50 years. That’s quite some heritage in this day and age filled with irrational (and excessive) consumption and planned obsolescence. So, when Triumph talks of the new Bonneville T120 Black as being an iconic modern classic with authentic timeless styling, I tend to agree with the British company. One look at the new T120 Black and you can see Triumph is not just spouting lip service from their advertising department. Our test machine was certainly retro cool with sophisticated, yet old-school looking dials, a classy dark brown seat and distinctive matt graphite paint job and ‘shiny’ Triumph detailing. The finish is excellent and Triumph has gone to a great deal of trouble to give potential customers a thoroughly modern machine, whilst still retaining its trademark traditional styling. An excellent example of this is the twin flyby-wire controlled throttle bodies that for all the world look like a couple of flash old sixties carburettors. The new 1200cc SOHC eight valve parallel twin with six speed gearbox engine is, while looking air cooled, in fact liquid cooled. The twin has a charismatic 270-degree firing interval that produces serious torque throughout the rev range with the peak of 105Nm at a low 3100rpm. These figures alone are a clue to all you really need to know about the power delivery... think torquey as hell at all revs, which kind of makes the six speed gearbox somewhat unnecessary. This torque figure is a massive 54% greater than the previous, admittedly smaller, 865cc model and the hp is up almost 20% too, peaking at 79hp at 6550rpm,

Something for the weekend...? Words: Ben Wilkins / Photos: Ben Wilkins, Geoff Osborne
Getting away for 48 hours on a motorcycle is one of life’s little pleasures, so plan a route and get your ride on to make the most of a weekend pass. Kawasaki’s Versys 1000 and 650 make perfect getaway vehicles...
H
eading off for a week or two’s motorcycle touring is often the highlight of many a rider’s summer plans. Those long summer days taking the quietest, twistiest roads around the most picturesque parts of New Zealand are the stuff great memories are made of. Unfortunately, that’s only once or twice a year... if you’re lucky. Here at KR we’re fans of the weekend getaway; kit all packed on Thursday night, ready to leave as soon as the work whistle blows on Friday. An action-packed quick and dirty weekend if you will. Kawasaki’s Versys models are, arguably, the perfect bikes for New Zealand touring. Long travel suspension, upright riding positions and wide-ish bars make short work of our less than perfect stretches of tar seal and the occasional gravel road, while 17-inch wheels with wide rubber offer plenty of grip no matter what our quick-to-change weather throws at us. IN fact, they’re bloody versatile – I guess this is where Kawasaki came up with the name, as Versys stands for Versatile System. There are two models that bear the Versys name, the four-cylinder 1000 and the twin-cylinder 650 and both of
them happened to be in the KR garage... so a plan was forged to see just how practical, not to mention fun, the two Versys models are. The goal was a low-level mission, leaving on Friday after work to get 190km of riding out of the way, a stop in Otorohanga for the night before pressing on to Ruapehu, take in a quick lap of the mountain before stopping in Taupo for the night and then high-tailing it back home on Sunday in time for tea and medals. A tail-pack per bike was the limit of luggage per bike. After all, how much kit do you really need to cart around for two nights away and two days of riding? Years of weekenders have shown I don’t need much at all. Some casual clothes for the evenings, a toothbrush and a spare pair of underpants, all wrapped up in a very waterproof bag. Simple. My luggage of choice for the trip was a couple of bits of
Kriega gear (US-20 and US-10) I’ve had for maybe eight or more years and Eve’s was Givi’s 30-litre waterproof tube bag. All three items have proved themselves time and again in some pretty nasty conditions. The last thing you want when you get to your bolt-hole for the night is to find your gear is soaking wet. Both the 1000 and 650 Versys are good bikes for strapping soft luggage to. The pillion grab-rails have bungee hook points on both sides and there are bungee points by the pillion footpegs and the rear part of the steel trellis chassis provides a host more options for securing all the bits you might need. That said, Kawasaki offers its three-piece, factory hard luggage for both machines if you’re after something a little more capacious in a colour to match the bike for $2199 inc GST. Heading off in rush-hour gave plenty of opportunity to gauge the Versys’ traffic-
beating ability. Threading through traffic is easy, both bikes have tall riding positions offering a view over all but the tallest vehicles and the engines are tuned for bottom-end and mid-range torque, which make it simple to nip past slow-moving traffic. A couple of hours of riding and we’re
making good progress towards our first stop for the night in Otorohanga. We decide to detour Hamilton on the Pirongia road rather than sit on the bypass. This is a lovely stretch of swooping tar seal and although it’s dark it’s still a ride to enjoy. Both bikes have good lights helping light the way through all but the tightest
of corners. There’s a good spread of light on low-beam, while hi-beam fills in the oncoming side of the road. A good touring bike needs decent lights and the twin-beam setups on both big and small machine do the job nicely. We reach Otorohanga just in time to park the bikes, check into our cabin for the KIWI RIDER

Hamish Harwood update
W
e’ve got a welcome update from 2016 NZ MX2 champ Hamish Harwood racing plans for the new season and recovery progress after an injury at the Motocross of Nations: “At the MXoN event I injured my AC joint in a first turn pile-up during the qualifying race making it a complete AC separation. I haven’t been back on the bike since the event but the plan is to be back riding around the second week in November – depending on the shoulder recovery as I just don’t want to push it when it’s not ready. “We stayed over in Europe for a few weeks after the MXoN then came home
and got straight back to work for Buxeda Construction, which has been really great. As far as fitness goes, I basically had four weeks of doing nothing after MXoN, which I think the body needed after a long season. I’m now slowly getting back into swimming and running as a start, then hoping to start strength training next week. “Over Labour weekend Caydie and I flew home to Takaka to catch up with family for a few days, while the CML Team went and raced in Taupo. I plan to be racing at Auckland champs depending on the shoulder but I’ll just race the single class as I won’t be close to full fitness. I’m really looking forward to this next season with the CML KTM team and our new sponsors
NZ Trials Champs
Story: Stephen Oliver
ith the absence of Jake Whitaker, who is convalescing from a recent knee operation, the top Expert class was opened up for the taking. Jake has been National title holder for eight years and is considered by many to be the best rider we have seen in this country to date. Jake’s winning streak has only ever been broken by UK import Jack Sheppard. Jack had been asked to ride again this year to give Jake some competition and arrived in NZ to find out that Jake would not be able to compete. Jack is in a whole different league to the remainder of NZ trials riders and could not be considered a threat to any of the other top guns, so in a very professional manner provided spectators with an exhibition of top world class Trials riding, which impressed all that were fortunate enough to get to see him. But back to the field of competitors who were there to fight it out for the championship. Day One. This was also the day the riders contested the NZ Expert Trophy; this is when you get to see that many of our local lads were also in fine form. The eventual first Kiwi home was Nick Oliver who edged out younger brother Peter. Peter put in a great performance in his first year at this level, followed by Jules Huguenlin, another South Islander Jason Baker and North Islander Matt Foster. Day Two. This turned out to be another great day of well-marked out sections with blue sky and sunshine. Jack Sheppard rode comfortably all day with no sign of faltering, while the remainder of the field set to and had a right old battle. This was to eventually be Jules’ day, showing moments
of brilliance and demonstrating that his overseas competing at a world level in his youth was starting to pay off. Nick Oliver followed and younger brother Peter, within one point of his brother, took out third; things were just starting to get interesting. Day Three. This was going to be a battle between the Frenchman and the two Oliver brothers. And what a battle it was. When it came to finding an eventual winner out of these three, the officials had to resort to the MNZ rule book as all three had finished on the same championship points. Nick, who had picked up the flu from his sons the weekend before, hit the wall on the last lap of the last day and had to settle for third behind Peter and Jules, but still giving him enough championship points to tie with them overall. However, the rule book states that if there is a tie on Championship points then the results will be as the final day placings finished up. Fortunately for Peter Oliver he managed to stay consistent and rode at a level that even surprised himself,
W
on board, especially with having a bike even better than last years!”
not to mentions many others. So the eventual man to take the top trophy was English import Jack Sheppard, followed by Peter Oliver and Jules Huguenlin with Nick Oliver in fourth. Although a little disappointed Nick seemed happy that he was first Kiwi home on Day One, the New Zealand Expert trial and second Kiwi home for the three day National and that it was another family member who had pipped him. Not to be over shadowed by his sons, Stephen Oliver added another Masters/President Championship to this tally, making for a very successful weekend for the Oliver Clan. A big thank you from the Oliver Clan to their supporters MTF, John Shand Racing, Goldpine, Nelson Glass, Fulton Hogan, Nonstop Adventure Ltd, Nelson Marlborough Trials Centre and Steve Saunders SXS and a special thank you to the Pioneer and Marlborough Motorcycle clubs for helping to host and run the event. AMANDA
KR: What made you start this event way back in 2009? AF: I actually started back in 2006 with fun rides and trail rides but was as green as green. This all started from five boys, including my son, who wanted to start a motocross team at HPC (Hauraki Plains College) in 2005 - so we did. Unfortunately I don’t have many pictures of those days as I truly didn’t think it would last once my son and his mates left school. However, the demand was there to continue even though I was as green as grass. KR: How did the School Board react to the idea?
ICK
FITZPATR
AF: The school BOT have always been supportive of the motocross team but, more importantly, the backing of our Principal was amazing. Of course, there was the safety issue but my answer was that we would all wear our protective gear – yet kids play hockey with just a mouth guard and shin pads, those balls fly faster than any bike I have seen! KR: What’s the story with the pink Mohawks? AF: When we started racing at Ardmore I could not see my five boys so I got Duck tape and streamers from the $2 shop so I could see them. Then we lost a mother
to breast cancer and various members had been affected by BC in some way, probably like most of NZ, so I thought pink Mohawks to recognise our riders and NZBC would be the way to go. The kids at the time were stoked when they arrived from the USA – they wanted to wear them at a Broxy training! The guy who sent them over from the States then used our team as his advertising cover photo. They work so well, we can see them at a distance and also when a rider comes down - they are perfect! It also teaches our team to “Pay it Forward”; we annually raise money for BC and always add to whatever we collect.
Nailed it! Words: Vege
Amanda Fitzpatrick is the driving force behind Nailing the Peat and the Hauraki Plains College MX team, using motocross to promote a good attitude, the importance of school work and healthy, fun competition.
KR: Your classes reflect the diverse range of abilities and seem to be spot on, how do you control the riders in each class? AF: I think we have nailed it! Over the years I got to see some kids just ‘crushed’ by being lapped – there’s no glory in winning a trophy when you are lapping kids - so purely from observation I came up with our classes and am very clear in our rules that a rider MUST be in the right class and if you have trophied in the lower classes you HAVE to move up. I was stoked getting feedback from the likes of Michael Phillips telling me “You have great even racing here”. My beginners’
class is purely for the ‘bunnies’. Leave them alone, let’s build their confidence and self-esteem to become better riders. To me it’s about encouraging kids to ride and have some fun. They may well move onto the clubs, but everyone has to start somewhere and on a paddock is where motocross started.
were plenty of events on the school calendar, but this year they have been few and far between. The year we had 230 riders entered I hated it; I would rather run an event with a good family feel and good vibes. So I now cap the riders to 140 and we generally get between 120-140 plus the supporter riders.
KR: How many kids have been at Nailing The Peat? AF: A lot! I have no idea of numbers, I used to do two a year, but after the drought year, which some people loved and some hated, I went back to one a year. Having said that, at the time there
KR: The atmosphere is always a good one, does the school team concept help build school pride and self-esteem? AF: Yes, the atmosphere is always awesome. If it wasn’t, I would not be doing it. Yes to building school pride and self-esteem, but a fantastic attitude KIWI RIDER

KTM’s 125 XC-W replaces the 125 EXC for 2017 in the company’s enduro range. The XC-W is 3kg lighter, comes with a new engine and a heap of updates to make 2017 your best year yet.
K
TM is calling its new 125cc Enduro model an XC-W, which stands for cross country (XC) and wide ratio (W) - the EXC tag is no more. We got a brief ride on two of the new machines and quizzed their riders Zak Fuller and William Eyre. Legendary offroad racer, and all-round good bastard, Mark Fuller brought son Zak’s completely standard machine up to the Leighton’s farm test venue and William Eyre and his dad Stuart dropped in with
Zak Fuller Will Eyre
his lightly modified bike. William’s 125 has harder springs at both ends (he’s a tall lad) and the jetting has been tinkered with. I went out on William’s machine first and found the engine fast with decent torque that pulled into the power without any real need for slipping the clutch... as long as I stirred the gearbox regularly. This 125 is easy to ride fast, not like 125s of old where you had to live on the clutch or you went nowhere. In the upper mid range there’s a decent hit of power for a 125 and you need to be paying attention or there’s the possibility of it catching you off guard. After that the power stays strong to the redline. For the sand the power delivery was great, but I would want less hit and more linear power in slippery-going to get more traction and make it easier to ride.
Zak’s (standard) engine power was completely linear by comparison. It was easier to ride and only really lacked a whisker of top-end. With Zak being lighter than William, in effect his bike would be just as fast and easier to ride for longer and in a greater range of terrain. Suspension action was the other way around for me. William’s bike sat higher in the stroke and was super plush for me. There is no doubt that big horse power stuffs up suspension action... sure it has come a long way and is now awesome on 450 machines too. But, if you want super-plush suspension that is never even slightly overwhelmed by the power and lets you get away with bloody murder, a 125 is still the way to go. Zak’s standard suspension was extremely plush too, but inclined to bottom out with my 100kg frame on it. KIWI RIDER

amaha’s YZ450F in its current form has been a very solid performing beast for the last couple of years since it gained the rearward slanting motor in 2014. The bike has received modest updates in that time, which have, nonethe-less, made the 450 a better racer and kept it at, or certainly near, the front of the pack. For 2017 the Yamaha YZ450F remains unchanged bar BNG (Bling New Graphics), a slightly modified airbox cover that recesses the Dzus fasteners (the ones we kept catching our knee guards on), a new rear disc material for better heat resistance and some minor reliability changes. The ‘17 YZ also has new rubber boots fitted for the new season... but that is not really an update, is it? Just because there aren’t many updates to write about for the new season’s machine, don’t think the YZ450F is lacking. The engine got new cams for 2016, boosting low-to-midrange power, so there’s plenty of grunt. It features Yamaha proprietary Launch Control System that’s activated by the press of a button and disengages once third gear is selected. Then there’s the suspension – the fork specifically – that draws much praise from testers and owners alike. Anyway, updates aside, the 2017 450 Yamaha is still bloody fast, and fast pretty much everywhere in the rev range. I’m thankful that Yamaha didn’t jump ship for air forks – the KYB forks really didn’t need touching. They’ve got class-leading action from the wire springs and have extremely well sorted damping. The shock is great too and the chassis is the most stable in the class. Reliability is not bettered by any other brand either, so the Yamaha is still clearly a very impressive machine. The new placement of the Dzus fasteners, now deeper set in to the plastic airbox cover so they stay in place, is a great thing. In past years they would rapidly become undone and then be ripped out by knee braces and lost. To my mind the whole airbox cover design has been a bit of a shambles for some years now and while this Dzus update does work, the cover still looks half baked, particularly when compared to the rest of the machine which has an excellent fit and finish. What does feel better though, despite bagging the update earlier, is the new Dunlop MX3S tyre which is more aggressive than last year’s MX52 tyres. The added grip adds a new found confidence in the turns and at turn-in time. While the Yamaha won’t turn-in

as effortlessly and accurately as the best steering bikes in the class, the tyres definitely add some security and composure compared to last year. Yamaha doesn’t mention any engine tune changes, but I came away with the distinct impression the new bike is smoother than before and has a more linear power delivery, especially from very low revs. Perhaps Yamaha has slightly altered the fuel mapping? In past years getting the big Yam to hook up on very slick terrain was an issue, particularly in the lower rev range where the power delivery was a little abrupt, but it now feels superior better in this regard. It’s a welcome change despite Yamaha not mentioning it in the spec sheets. How competitive is the ‘17 machine?
Well, tester Liam Draper took the new bike to a club day and, despite having never raced a 450F, took it to the top step of the podium with no mods other than clicker changes. It’s a proven machine and one that’s easily capable of doing the business weekend in, weekend out. Overall the 2017 Yamaha YZ450F is still an extremely solid performer. To my mind it works best for the bigger, taller rider on more open flowing tracks where the stable chassis and excellent suspension are at their best and can truly shine. It’s shown itself to be very reliable, so no worries on that front. However, with some all new models coming out this year and others given major updates, the 450 Yamaha isn’t going to have it all its own way.
I came away with the distinct impression the new bike is smoother than before and has a more linear power delivery

awasaki’s 2017 KLX110 was built with the serious off-road enthusiast in mind. 112cc of power, a 680mm seat height, and a sticker price of $3,895 differentiate this Kawasaki in what has become a highly competitive segment of the motorcycle market. Built in Japan Kawasaki has fitted this bike with plastics that give it the sleek racing looks of its big brother KX-F range. The electric start four stroke KLX110 comes with a semi-auto four-speed
I
loved riding the KLX110 because it had four gears and no clutch, which was cool to ride after riding my own KTM 50 without gears. Electric start is also cool because I could put it in neutral and start it without my Dad. I rode it on a very muddy day and when I fell off, I could lift it up myself even though I am only seven years old. I could do some jumps on it and I really want one for Christmas! MARLON VAN HELLEMOND
transmission which is great for the entry level rider. From the KLX110 you move up to the Kawasaki KLX110L with a 730mm seat height 20mm higher than KLX110 but the same 112cc electric start power plant. The KLX110L has a four-speed transmission with a clutch that is great for learning to do wheel stands. It has more suspension travel front and rear than the KLX110 and looks sharp, it is a great bike to start on or move up to from a semi-auto transmission.
First up for me was the KLX110 with a clutch. This had an electric start too, bonus! I liked this bike for the starts, the smooth gearbox (it’s easy to change up and down through the gears), good brakes for stopping and a real comfy seat. I really enjoyed riding this bike. The second bike to ride was the KLX110 clutchless model. It has electric start, which is good for us kids and even better for when you bin it. You can just pick it up, push the button and you’re off riding again. This bike was the easiest to ride, there’s no clutch to have to remember and the shocks felt better in this bike too. RHYS BAXTER

Kawasaki’s junior range is pretty extensive, so when KR was offered the opportunity to test the whole range our junior testers all put their hands up. If you were looking for a great trail riding bike the KLX110 is good through mud, comfortable and super easy to ride. But there are two options – there is one with a clutch and one without. Today I rode the KLX with a clutch. The 110 is good for having the convenience of a clutch – it’s right there if the engine feels like it’s going to stop. The electric start comes in handy for if

you’re on the farm or trail riding with your mates. It’s so easy to touch the ground on, a seven or eight year old can ride it. The 110 would be good as a muck-around bike or for trail riding and going down the farm. Both of the bikes coped well in the mud today. Over all the KLX is a great bike for any kid. ASHTON WHYTE

DUCATI MONSTER
I
t is difficult to state precisely when the trend towards retro and naked motorcycles began. I use retro and naked in the same sentence for a good reason; retro implies a classic look from another era, and naked, without a fairing or cover. What links the two is that from the importation of the first motorcycle to this country in 1899 until the late 1970s, most motorcycles did not have fairings. From then until recent times the majority did. So when some models abandoned fairings, they became known as naked, or retro. One of the first 21st century models to discard the fairing, and look unashamedly like a British bike of the 1960s, was the Kawasaki W650, followed by the revival of the Triumph Bonneville in 2001. Almost a decade before this, however, in 1993, Ducati, not known for unfaired models, had launched its own version, which in no way paid homage to classic looks of the past, but paved the way for so called naked bikes of the future. Designed by Migual Angel Galluzzi the Monster was a naked street-fighter with the celebrated Ducati SS motor. Galluzzi said of his design philosophy, “All you need is a saddle, tank, engine, two wheels, and handle bars First shown at the Cologne Show in September 1992, it created
a sensation. It was initially known as the M900, but when a company worker said the prototype looked like a monster, the name stuck, and that is officially what it became known as. The Monster was a blue-print for high performance naked street bikes, initially derided by Ducati purists, but eventually taken into the fold, and now recognised as a classic. The Monster ethos became much copied, and imitated, but of course it is said that imitation is a most sincere form of flattery. Perhaps the most compelling imitation is the MV Agusta Brutale, but of course it isn’t a twin. Without changing the basic design Ducati refined the model, producing a 600cc in 1994 and a 750cc in 1996. Limited editions were produced for customers looking for something different. The original 1993 model had a 904cc, belt-driven, singleoverhead-camshaft, 90-degree Desmo V-twin, air/oil-cooled engine, which it shared with the fully faired 900SS sports bike. The frame, with minor adjustments is from the 1991 World Superbike Championship winning 888. It had a six-speed box, and hydraulically operated dry clutch. Wheelies were par for the course in lower gears, and its relatively light weight of 180kg made it potent on the open road. Top speed was around
