RAY WHITHAM

I

t is with deep sadness we report that legendary New Zealand broadcaster Ray Whitham passed away on December 17, 2015 after a brief battle with cancer. The motorcycle racing community lost one of its great voices and most knowledgeable minds with the passing of the 71-year-old. He had been present at Manfeild for the second of three rounds of the Suzuki Series just a few days earlier and, although resigned to the fact that his failing health might mean he wouldn’t be able to be a spectator at the final round on the famous Cemetery Circuit, he certainly had his fingers crossed that he might make that one final event before he passed. Sadly, this could not happen, although many might have felt his presence there, perhaps looking on. Born in 1944, Ray (christened Raymond Leslie Whitham) was the official historian for the Cemetery Circuit event, a popular annual spectacle that first ran in 1951 and it has been his insightful writing that blessed the official programme right up until his passing. From working as a policeman and rescuing survivors after the Wahine ferry sank in 1968, to playing rugby and tracking down murderers while working for the police, you’d have to wonder where he found the time for the huge input he had to the NZACU (the New Zealand Auto Cycle Union, the forerunner to what is now Motorcycling New Zealand), to his continuing

work with MNZ and working with a number of motorcycle clubs along the way. He worked with television personality Geoff Bryan as the commentator at the national motocross championships for Television New Zealand back in 1983, the popular regular

commentator at the annual Paeroa Street Races, at the Cemetery Circuit street races on Boxing Day and at the Lyall Bay street races, just to name a few of the high-profile events he covered. Ray was also formerly the president of the Victoria Motorcycle Club.

HUSQVARNA ROAD CONCEPT

W

ith an eye to breaking into the factory cafe-racer market, Husqvarna has previewed a concept machine – the Vitpilen 701. The concept machine is based around the KTM 690 fourstroke single. The roadster’s name translates as White Arrow in homage to Husqvarna’s Silverpilen (Silver Arrow) of the 1950s. The 701 concept is certainly tantalising and follows in the footsteps of the company’s Vitpilen 401 and 125 models, which are due for sale in early 2017. All of the Vitpilen roadsters are likely to boast the same running gear as the KTM Duke range of motorcycles.

Words & photos: Andy McGechan onda won the battle, but Suzuki won the war in the glamour Formula One Superbike class at the third and final round of the Suzuki Series on Boxing day. It was also a breakthrough moment for Wellington’s Sloan Frost when he won the main crown this year. Frost (MC2 Racing Fujitsu TSS Red Baron Suzuki GSX-R1000) finished second and third in his two Formula One Superbike class races at Whanganui on Boxing Day, enough for him to win his first major superbike trophy after eight years of trying. It was perhaps the perfect ending to the series that wrapped up on the Cemetery Circuit, the closed-off public streets of Whanganui, with two Suzuki men claiming the Suzuki-sponsored series’ two premier trophies. Not only did Suzuki hero Frost break free of his biggest threat for the F1 title, Liechtenstein’s Horst Saiger (Red Devil Racing Kawasaki ZXR-10R), but Suzuki also managed to snatch away the Formula Two 600cc class as well, with Auckland’s Daniel Mettam taking his Team RCM Suzuki GSX-R600 to overcome a nine-point deficit and end the day at Whanganui instead as F2 class champion.

I just did what I had to do “After finishing ahead of Saiger in the first race, it gave me a six-point buffer over him and so I backed off a little in race two, concentrating entirely on making sure I took the series crown. I just did what I had to do,” said the 34-year-old Frost. “I ended up overheating the bike on the slow-down lap after race two and this meant I opted out of racing in the Robert Holden Memorial Race.” It was a disastrous outcome in Whanganui for both the men who had respectively been the F1 and F2 class points leaders at the start of the day, Saiger and Wainuiomata’s Shane Richardson (Wainui Joinery Kawasaki ZX-6R). Despite dominating the early part of the threeround competition, Saiger could manage only two fifth placings at Whanganui and slipped down to finish the series from first equal to third overall, eventually winding up behind the man who dominated the class at Whanganui, Whakatane’s Tony Rees (Honda CBR1000RR). Rees also win the stand-alone Robert Holden Memorial feature race. A crash and subsequent non-finish in the opening F2 race at Whanganui wrecked Richardson’s chances of winning the series in that class, while Mettam finished first and third and took the series win by 12.5 points

The jostling is evident at the start of this Formula One race on the Cemetery Circuit on Boxing Day, with Auckland’s Toby Summer (Kawasaki No.22) leading the way

Wellington’s Sloan Frost (Suzuki GZX-R1000), on his way to winning the 2015 Suzuki Series, which wrapped up in Whanganui on Boxing Day

Despite looking similar to the last model, the S1000RR has had a complete revamp to boost power and torque and gets a suite of electronics that’d shame a space mission.

I

t was a bit of a shock if I’m honest. It’s been a while since I last rode a ‘Full Monty’ 1000cc sports bike. My diet of road test bikes lately has been nothing if not varied, but none compare with the BMW S1000RR. Take for example comparatively docile and relaxed machines like the Triumph Scrambler and Kawasaki Vulcan, both 900cc bikes, through to the far more exciting Ducati Mutistrada 1200 and the downright huge Triumph Rocket III, these bikes offer no insight, what-so-ever, into the experiences that will genuinely assault your body and mind on the BMW S1000RR. It is simply astonishing! It’s much too simplistic to think a ‘superbike’ is all about the engine and the power it can produce, the chassis and suspension make a bike like this every bit as ‘super’ as the engine. But, I have to admit, it’s the engine that has the most impact when you ride a machine like the S1000RR (along with cramped ergonomics for those as tall as me at 6’ 4”). The 999cc liquid cooled, in-line four cylinder, DOHC engine, with six speed

gearbox delivers 199hp and 113Nm of torque. Big numbers. Although that said, it’s very rideable and reasonably mellow below 4000rpm. Interestingly the tachometer is dissected into quarters by large numerals. The figure ‘4’ relate to 4000rpm, ‘8’ equates 8000rpm and so on. These numbers correlate to serious increases in power, I won’t say ‘steps’ but they’re certainly major advancement zones. Below 4000rpm is the ‘safe zone’ as I like to think of it, where you can operate within the requirements of the law. From 4000 to 8000rpm is the quick road riding zone where everything is fine and dandy, but you could still lose your licence... From 8000 to 12,000rpm, it would be sensible and wise to be riding on a proper race track and from 12,000rpm to the big red 16? Well, this is basically the ‘holey sh*t’ zone, where it wouldn’t surprise me if some people were to find God! However, BMW is getting slightly excited here because the actual shown redline is around 14,300rpm with the limiter kicking in at about 14,500 – not 16,000rpm. Basically, the BMW pulls staggeringly hard from 11,000rpm until the

Kawasaki’s Z300 makes a great case for a first bike or as a lean green commuting machine.

I

must admit when I first set eyes on Kawasaki’s LAMS-compliant Z300 I thought it had great style and, really, just looked like a smaller, 300cc version of its bigger Kawasaki brothers! I loved it and couldn’t wait to ride it although I was slightly concerned about how much power it would – or wouldn’t – have and thought it might be a little boring. In hindsight, I’m not sure I could have been more wrong. Yep, the sparkly green Z300 really did surprise me. The 300cc parallel twin, four-stroke motor has real character and once you start to use the higher rev range, there’s a lot of fun to be had. The bottom end leaves a bit to be desired of course, being a 300cc LAMS machine, but once the revs hit around the 5000rpm mark there’s a real surge in power and the revcounter needle quickly makes its way upwards towards the redline at 12,500rpm. It more than comfortably cruises at 100km/h on the motorway and will push beyond 100km/h without much of a problem at all and eventually even crack the 160km/h (100mph) mark – if given enough space away from a public road. The seating position is comfortably upright and relatively compact. I’m 171cm tall and Kawasaki’s smallest Zed is perfectly proportioned for me although the Editor

2016 Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin Getting a test ride on Honda’s new Africa Twin is almost impossible, but ex-editor Jon Bentman managed to jump on one a full two weeks ahead of the official world launch...

H

OLY COW, my heart is thumping. Given the possession of a new Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin fully spec’d-up by Touratech I’ve grasped the opportunity with both hands, or at least with one hand twisted fully backwards. Yeah, I should maybe have taken those first kilometres easy, but no, first sign of gravel and I’ve switched the traction control off and gone full gas. As many a test rider might tell you, it’s the short cut method to understanding just what the character of a new motorcycle is. And this new Africa Twin is sporting, seriously sporting. The pace it can set is certainly blistering, and it has the accuracy to go with the pace. And just as well, there were some lairy moments back there, it was as well it stayed on the track because trees bloody well hurt if you challenge them, and there are plenty of trees here in Germany’s Black Forest. But bottom line? Yeah, it’s a missile.

LONG TIME NO SPEAK The return of the Africa Twin is long overdue. Seriously-seriously overdue. In fact Honda has been almost criminally negligent in their disregard for the adventure segment. BMW must have been pissing themselves laughing all these years, amazed as the rest of us that Honda, the sleeping giant as it were, could pass by such a surefire growth sector in the market. Okay, in the very last few years they’ve come at us with a revision on the Transalp, then the Crossdress... er, Crosstourer, and added an X suffix to any number of models in a half-hearted attempt to imply adventure capability. But really it’s all been a bit limp and far from convincing. Wind the clock back and we can make a mark, literally in the sand, in 1988 when Honda first launched the Africa Twin, as the XRV650, a model that paid homage to Honda’s

n infrequent racer these days, former motocross Grand Prix star Josh Coppins was thrilled to discover he was still capable of winning a podium spot. The 38-year-old from Motueka signed off on his brief fill-in racing role with the high-profile Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team at the weekend with podium finishes in two separate classes at the 44th annual Whakatane Summercross. Coppins finished third overall in the premier MX1 (open) class and, not surprisingly, comfortably won overall in the veterans’ 35-44 years’ class as well. “I rode the vets’ class as well as the MX1 class because I thought the extra time on the bike would be useful. I feel now like I’m really starting to get my conditioning and form back. “But this was my last fill-in race for the team and now I’ll be concentrating on helping riders Dean Ferris, Kayne Lamont and Courtney Duncan ahead of their respective campaigns,” said Coppins, who reverts to his usual role as Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team manager. “I crashed in my third MX1 class race and that cost me in the overall points count-up, but I am still pleased that I could still put the bike on the podium. “I knew Cody Cooper and Rhys Carter would be fast here today and I would have liked to have finished a step or two closer to the top, but so be it. “The last time I raced here was back in 2011, so I did okay to still be a contender today.” Coppins compiled a 2-2-4-3-3 score-card over his five races in the MX1 class and was unbeaten in all three of his veterans’ 35-44 years’ class outings. Hamilton’s multi-time former national champion Darryll King took a similar Yamaha YZ450F to win all three races in the veterans’ over-45 years class.

Other class winners at Summercross were: Hamilton’s Josiah Natzke (MX2 class, KTM); Cambridge’s Trent Collins (junior 12-17 years 250cc class and Youth MX class, Honda); Tauranga’s Jessie Waterhouse (women’s class, Yamaha);

Motueka’s Josh Coppins (veterans 35-44 years, Yamaha); Hamilton’s Darryll King (veterans over-45 years, Yamaha); Taupo’s Wyatt Chase (junior 16-17 years 125cc, Yamaha); Mangakino’s Maximus Purvis

(junior 12-15 years 125cc, KTM); Okato’s Zak Hetherington (junior 14-16 years 85cc, TM); Matamata’s Brodie Connolly (junior 12-13 years 85cc, KTM); Hamilton’s Nick Westgate (pro 65cc class, KTM).

The last in Yamaha’s dirt line up to be updated, but the most eagerly anticipated, the 2016 WR450F goes reverse cylinder like its YZ brethren.

I

was lucky enough to attend the press launch of the 2015 Yamaha WR250F (Yamaha’s first reverse cylinder enduro machine) at Coffs Harbour, Australia. So, I was keen to get a go on the 2016 Yamaha WR450F when the opportunity came my way. Thankfully, I was the tester who got the call so it was off to Australia once again. It’s a tough gig... Anyway, Yamaha launched the new machine just north of Sydney in a small town called Stroud, home to Yamaha team rider Josh Green. We were to ride on his property which backs onto a state forest. I arrived at the launch site to find a mixture of yellow and blue 2016 Yamaha WR450F machines. It is a ground up new bike with reverse cylinder head, the yellow WRs being the 60th anniversary models which have been created by Yamaha specially for Australia and NZ. I was allocated a yellow WR to ride the two days of the launch. Peter Payne, enduro legend, and our own Josh Coppins have been heavily involved with the development of this new WR450F - as they were with the current model WR250F, a great enduro bike itself. Having demonstrated its winning performance at the highest level, this industry-leading engine design gives the WR450F rider high levels of controllable and linear torque, while this design’s greater mass centralisation contributes towards the bike’s agile handling character. By adopting the latest YZ-F

derived engine layout, together with the compact and light-handling YZ-F based chassis, the all-new WR450F delivers major improvements in terms of weight, power characteristics, agility and rideability. Aimed at enduro racers, and recreational riders, the purpose-built WR450F benefits from a full enduro specification, and runs with specially developed engine and chassis settings that are designed to perform in a range of low and high speed off road situations. Like the YZ-F models and the recently launched WR250F, the completely new WR450F engine features a reverse cylinder head with a front facing air intake and rear-exiting exhaust. Yamaha says that by increasing intake and exhaust efficiency, this innovative layout enhances the engine’s linear torque feeling, and delivers deep reserves of highly controllable and easy-to-use power. The WR450F’s reverse cylinder head and rearwards-slanting cylinder layout has already proved its competitiveness with the World Championship winning YZ450F motocrosser. As with the highly successful YZ-F ‘brothers’ and the WR250F enduro, the 2016 WR450F’s compact engine layout, together with the underseat fuel tank and snaking exhaust pipe, contribute significantly towards mass-centralisation. Like many innovative technologies, the look of the reverse cylinder engine may initially seem ‘wrong’ to some, but the power and torque gains are

We picked up Chris Birch’s 2016 KTM 300 EXC fresh from his 2nd place at the Nut Buster Hard Enduro to see exactly what a rider of Birch’s calibre does to get his bike ready for a race.

N

o doubt about it, Chris Birch’s 2016 KTM 300 EXC is a rolling hotbed of bling parts and cool stuff. It certainly looks trick. A quick rundown of the flash stuff goes like this - Renthal Twin wall bars (with cross brace removed), Barkbusters, XRC steering damper and KTM Hard Parts cushioned bar mounts, grippy seat cover with lifting strap, full graphics kit, cooling fan and stout radiator louver/ braces, WP Trax shock and 48mm USD Cone valve forks, exhaust chamber guard, full front disc cover and rear shark fin style disc guard and finally the tyres are fitted with tyre balls that act as tubes. I picked up the Birch machine straight after the Hard Enduro down south. It was still dirty and so I was testing the 300 exactly as the bike finished

the race; the honest, real deal, if you like. The first thing I noticed was the rear tyre looked very soft, so I’m assuming a few of the tyre balls may have ruptured during the event. So, with that in mind I fired up to the Woodhill Bike Park for a ride. First things I noticed were that the 300 EXC feels like a big bike, it’s tall and doesn’t seem particularly light. This 2016 300 powerplant feels like KTM 300 EXC motors have always felt. They’re solid performing, torquey beasts that are very easy to use in a wide range of conditions, but are not spectacular in any way performance-wise. And to be frank, I think this is really the 300’s great strength, because it just gets the job done in a deceptively easy and effortless manner. If the 300 has one fault, I’d say it’s a little inclined to lose traction when the revs are just above idle on very slick ground. Now, being super picky, it’s also a little flat and a

F

or 2016 Suzuki has rolled out pretty much the same bike as last year... but I’ve gotta say that this is no bad thing because as a package, I think it was the most complete/best 450 MX bike of 2015. If you were to read some of the US mags, you would see that the 450 RM-Z takes a bit of a beating for being overweight, down on hp and somewhat old school in the ergos. To which, I would largely say “bollocks”. Starting with the ergos, the Suzuki is excellent. Just because it looks like nothing has changed for several years doesn’t mean it is bad. In fact I’d rates the ergos as equal best in class. The whole machine is slim, front to back. It has the best seat in class because of the firm density foam with good depth and a great shape, plus a reasonably grippy cover that holds the rider in place. The handle bars are Renthal Fatbars which are a great shape, a good height and with okay flex characteristics – meaning they don’t feel too rigid. All the levers and pedals fall to hand or foot very nicely for a standard machine. The spec sheet says the 450 has a kerb weight of 112kg. So, with 6.2 litres of gas and other fluids on board, it is not the lightest 450 around, but it’s not that far off the mark either. Most importantly though, the RM-Z doesn’t feel heavy to ride and has a very manageable feeling in general. The 449cc single cylinder, liquid cooled, DOHC, four-stroke with five speed gearbox is a great motor. It also has Suzuki Holeshot Assist Control (S-HAC), operated from a button on the left handlebar. Hold the button down for 0.7 of a second for the most mellow drive, 1.8 seconds for the most aggressive drive and leave alone for the standard power delivery. They all make a significant and noticeable difference. The aggressive setting is really quite impressive for sandy starts! In general the power delivery is very useable. The motor is not inclined to stall at low revs, pulls smoothly into a strong mid range, which just keeps getting stronger as revs rise. The power is gutsy with good torque and controllability, and fast. However, the peak power is down a little on the class leader, but I’m inclined to ask if that really matters. The only real weak point of the engine package is the old clutch from last year that has a spongy feel and fades when worked particularly hard. Like last year the brakes are Nissin calipers and single discs front and rear. The front has a twin piston caliper, while the rear caliper only has a single piston; both calipers float. I like the rear brake, it works fine. The front is average at best in strength but on the positive side it does feel okay, however it is not a match for the recently upgraded brakes on other Japanese brands. The rear shock is a decent performer and I liked it a lot in the sand where I rode the 450 most. It is fully adjustable, quite compliant,

FASHION, STYLE, AND GLAMOUR IN A SMALL PACKAGE 1961 Vespa - High on the collectable list

hat exactly is a scooter...? It has two wheels, so what distinguishes a scooter from a motorcycle exactly? There are several characteristics that do not apply to motorcycles. The motor is generally underneath the rider and in front of the rear wheel. A scooter’s wheels are smaller than motorcycle wheels, which is believed to assist with manoeuvring in restricted space, but perhaps the most obvious differences are in the chassis. The ‘step-thru’ design, and use of a floorboard, make the scooter more attractive to city dwellers who want to wear pedestrian clothing and shoes. The front end, unlike the fairing on a motorcycle which is usually aerodynamically designed, is to protect the rider from the elements, rather than any consideration for performance and the almost complete covering of all mechanical and moving parts helps keep the rider’s clothes clean. Scooters in some form or another have been around since the early days of the combustion engine, but the majority of the

scooters we have become familiar with have their roots in the post-World War Two period. Names such as Vespa, and Lambretta became household names, although there were, and still are, many other brands available. Automotive historians tell us that the popularity of the scooter was the direct result of a massive demand for cheap efficient transport at the end of the war. Cars were expensive, and so was petrol. As cars and fuel became cheaper, the scooter made a dramatic transformation. Utility transport may well have been the instigator, but the little vehicles referred to disparagingly by many motorcyclists in the 1950s as Italian hair dryers, quickly became symbols of style, and fashion, and they were soon discovered by the movies. When, in 1953, the gorgeous Audrey Hepburn appeared on the back of Gregory Peck’s Vespa in the classic movie Roman Holiday, the scooter was transformed from a mere form of cheap transport, into a fashion icon. In 1959 scooters played a pivotal part in one of the greatest Italian movies of the era, La Dolce Vita, directed by Federico Fellini. Scooters featured in many other movies such as L’Avventura with Monica Viti, and more recently The Talented Mr
