KIWI RIDER

elcome to the January issue of Kiwi Rider. I hope you’re enjoying the promising start to the summer. Some really interesting bikes are starting to come out of the factories. Our Todd recently got to ride the new Scout from Indian Motorcycles. This bike is a milestone for Indian – it’s a lightweight cruiser rather than a big dress tourer – and makes 100hp from its 1000cc engine. See what Todd has to say about the Scout on page 32. The stunning image on the cover this month is of Triumph’s Tiger 800XC and we met up with a young chap who’s riding one around the world in an effort to break two world records. It’s an amazing trip by an inspiring young man and we’re going to be covering the rest of the journey in the magazine to see how the

Auckland-raised youngster – and the 800XC – cope with the journey through the Americas and Africa. This year’s Barry Sheene Festival was notable for the guest racer being female. Maria Costello MBE is a real road’s racer from the UK who has a penchant for racing classic motorcycles rather quickly - see page 20 for more on this year’s event. The big news this month in the dirt world is the launch of Yamaha’s WR250F enduro machine. Based heavily on the YZ250F motocrosser, the new WR puts Yamaha right back into the mix at the sharp end of enduro, as Sam Greenslade found out at the launch held in Australia. Summer biking is starting to shape up rather nicely. Enjoy the mag.. BEN WILKINS

NEW BIKES UNVEILED AT MILAN SHOW

N

ew models rubbed shoulders with oddball concepts at the 72nd EICMA motorcycle expo show in Milan, in November. Electronics manufacturers also hogged the spotlight, not least Bosch – which supplied a cornering ABS system to many headlining models, and was no doubt responsible for the six-axis inertial measurement unit for Yamaha’s R1 that keeps tabs on everything from slide and wheelie control to braking systems, while downloading every possible data permutation for you to view at your leisure. Japanese highlights included that new Yamaha YZF-R1 inspired by the MotoGP circus, and the supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2. A centrifugal supercharger bolted aft of the 157kW/210hp 998cc four-cylinder engine makes this the fastest-accelerating bike on

earth, and some countries are pushing to ban it, though it’s not alone in being crazy-fast. The R1 gains around 15 extra kilowatts – more with ram air in play – and was one of many bikes on display featuring an electronic smorgasbord to match the best of the Europeans. Yamaha also aimed its gunsights at real-world riders with the MT-09 Tracer, a sports-tourer spinoff of the MT-09 grunter with more luggage options, improved comfort and longer range, at a higher price and the cost of some performance. Honda opted to tease not please by showing a RC213V-S MotoGP replica V4 racer with mirrors and indicators, but no hints of whether this heralds a newer and sharper Fireblade, and a dust-caked True Adventure concept that looks production-ready and could be the

1000cc Africa Twin replacement we’ve long been awaiting. And speaking of adventure, BMW’s S1000XR will compete with Ducati’s Multistrada, using the mad-and-bad S1000R naked’s motor tamed by lean-angle-sensitive ABS Pro and wheelie control. Aprilia threw more at its RSV4 superbike and updated its electronics – adding launch control and quick shift to name but two – and hurled extra grunt at the Tuono V4 1100RR, with a factory variant fielding Ohlins suspenders and lashings of carbon fibre.

MARQUEZ DOUBLE TROUBLE

SUMMER OF SPORT

Just a month after Marc Marquez won his second MotoGP World Championship, his younger brother Alex clinched the Moto3 world title, setting yet another record for the Marquez clan. The brothers’ double is the first time in the 66 year history of the motorcycle GP world championship series that brothers have won titles in two separate classes. That they did it in the same year is all the more remarkable. The younger Marquez wrapped up the Moto3 title at the final round at Valencia: his third place finish giving him the championship by just three points over Australian-born New Zealand passport holder Jack Miller.

There’s plenty of motorcycling fun to be had over the summer but there are two ‘must see’ events; the iconic Wanganui Cemetery Circuit and the Bay of Plenty’s SummerCross. The Cemetery Circuit road race has been wowing spectators for over 50 years and is always run on boxing day, in downtown Wanganui. Guy Martin of TT fame is out again and the fields are packed. The Summercross is one of the premier off-road events of the year. Run at the Awakaponga track, Whakatane it always attracts top riders. Juniors race Saturday and adults on Sunday. The family ticket price of $35 will probably be the best value you get all Summer.

Some of racing’s top female riders came to Hampton Downs and showed the boys their clean heels at this year’s Barry Sheene Classic.

T

he third Barry Sheene historic race meeting in New Zealand at Hampton Downs was a huge success with many observers calling it a ‘Great Meeting’. As a promoter, wet weather is your greatest fear as it can turn a meeting into a loss situation oh so easily - as happened at the 2012 event. This year the weather gods were kind and crowd figures were up on last year. Past NZCMRR President Peter Lodge had the vision to invite Maria Costello MBE, a UK racer and past Isle of Man TT lap record holder. This charted a course for a female-focussed event that seemed simple in concept, but at times had its moments as the team had to arrange loan race machines for most of the solo riders. Fifteen solo women riders and five swingers in action together brought a touch of glamour to the event –

and the TV cameras followed. Kiwi TT Riders were filming a documentary, TV One came out on Saturday with reporter Abby Scott to film some action and interview the lady racers. With funding from key sponsors Mike Pero Real Estate, Bell Helmets and Penrite Oil we were able to hire a six camera TV crew to film a documentary for CRC Motorsport TV3 which will screen probably in early Feb 2015 in a two part show, plus will be on Speed TV in Australia and distributed in Europe to other channels. The thirty-two Australians who attended managed to wrestle the TransTasman Trophy from us and there was great racing all weekend and, considering the 250 plus entrants, very few race incidents. The women all had a great time hanging out together, having tons of photos taken and TV interviews. Young Amie Valucik-Hamilton, aged 15, was the star of the

Women at the Mike Pero Barry Sheene Motorcycle Classic

Saturday TV One news clip and Mihi Banks showed great determination and skill in riding the pants off the 1960 250 and 350 Jawas all weekend. Avalon Biddle raced a CBR600 Honda and created a huge buzz in the pits when she became the first woman to win a Barry Sheene solo race on either side of the Tasman when she took out a Post Classic 250 race on the ‘Ginger Molloy’ TSS Bultaco 250. Avalon said, “The bike has the weight of a 125 but with tons of cool power [said with a huge smile and a sparkle in her eyes], it is quite stable, doesn’t step out and if the back starts to slide a bit it suddenly bites and, wow, you are off again.’ There was lots of laughter amongst the women all weekend as they told each other about getting past another bloke or two in their last race. Many of their loaned bikes were mid-field clubman machines but they

2015

were all there to have fun and were a pleasure to work with. Nicki Smith road a Yamaha XJ550 and Moto Morini 500, the latter she found so easy to ride through the bends in third gear due to its even torque spread. Amie raced her own RG150 Suzuki alongside her dad George throughout the event, while Philippa Beck had both a Benelli 2502C and a 3TA Triumph 350cc clubman’s bike to enjoy. Sarah Elliot had mechanical problems with the Yamaha Anderson XJ600 all weekend but Debbie Bridge had a consistently reliable weekend on the Ducati TT2 in the Pre-82 Junior class. Other solo riders included Brigid Woodcock on an Aermacchi 250, and Janel Wilson and Karel Pavich – who both joined the women’s track parade led by Mike Pero at lunchtime on Sunday. Janet Wilson was the first women to win a Classic

I

started road racing motorcycles in 1993, the same year Kevin Schwantz finally won the 500GP world championship. Like every red-blooded scallywag of my generation, I’d watched him for years and idolised him, alongside other great champions of his era – names like Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey and Freddie Spencer. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be teaming up with Schwantz to compete in a prestigious event on the world stage (that’s a lie – I dreamt about it every day, I just never thought it would actually happen). Yet, there I was, standing at the pit wall of the famous Goodwood circuit, in my race leathers, waiting for the Kevin Schwantz to come in so we could swap and I could head out for my qualifying run on the number 34 bike… and then he bloody well crashed. For those who don’t know, the Goodwood Revival Festival is one of two major motorsport events held at the Goodwood Estate, near Chichester on England’s south coast every year. Hosted by Lord March, the Revival Festival relives the glory days of when the circuit formed part of the Formula 1 World Championship. In contrast to the other annual event, the Festival of Speed, which is a celebration of motorsport up to the present day, everyone involved in the Revival – competitors and mechanics included – is expected to dress and act in period fashion at all times. Every detail of the event is recreated in 1940s, 50s and 60s style, from the cars, bikes and aeroplanes on display, right through to the food stalls and various vendors selling their wares. Even the majority of the 130 thousand spectators choose to take part, so the whole place really does feel like a time warp. As you can imagine at an event of this size and stature, the whole place is on lockdown. Arriving at the circuit on Thursday afternoon for sign on and scrutineering, we had to sweet talk the gate staff into letting us park our car outside the main entrance, while I quickly called Ken McIntosh to tell him we’d arrived. Ken was inside with all the tickets and had to walk from the motorcycle pits out to the gate where we were waiting under very unapproving stares – a Kiwi family in a borrowed Volvo. When we did get our hands on the appropriate pass, it was a different story and remained so for the entire weekend.

The starting order of the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy at the Goodwood Revival Festival reads as a who’s who of motorcycling celebrities. This year, our Rodney made the list…

QUITE IMPORTANT PERSON As the unknown rider, I was more of a Quite Important Person than a VIP, but it was pretty close. Sign on was just past the recreation of Stonehenge at the entrance to the driver’s tent – set up as a large WWII era military field command centre. Fortunately, we had the right passes and this would be

ndian’s opening gambit at the Australasian launch of its latest bike, the Scout, was to show video of old-school Indian Scouts being used on a modern day Wall of Death. The original Scout was produced between 1920-1949 and some 30,000 were sold to the U.S government to assist the war effort. Today, the original bikes are popular among restorers… and, erm, Wall of Death riders. It’s fair to say Indian Motorcycles has had something of a chequered past. But with the brand being purchased by Polaris in 2011, the new incarnation of the iconic brand means business. Polaris is the world’s largest manufacturer of ATVs and already has Victory Motorcycles in its portfolio. Since being purchased by Polaris, the guys and gals at Indian have been busy. Very busy. After the purchase in 2011, they’ve already designed and produced the Chief, Chieftain and Roadmaster models, which were launched in 2013. It was only a matter of time – and not much time at that - before the Scout would be resurrected. As the name suggests, the Scout is a lighter weight reconnaissancestyle machine, and so it is today; the Scout is leaner and lighter than the other models in Indian’s range. Why the launch in New Zealand? Well, Indian is more than happy to play on the link between its name and Burt Munro, and the World’s Fastest Indian movie. So, it was pretty much a given the launch would be here in NZ. History aside, the 2015 Scout gets an all-new 1133cc, 60-degree motor, which has been developed specifically for

32

KIWI RIDER

the Scout. The engine is of unit construction and features six gears, double-overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, to give a claimed 100hp and 72lb-ft (97Nm) at 5900rpm. A press of the starter and the motor spins up quickly and settles to a steady beat. I’m not a big fan of noisy bikes but although I think the Scout sounds good, even I was left thinking it’d sound better if it was a tad noisier. Power delivery from the 1133cc motor is pretty linear from 2500rpm through to 7500rpm but it does seem to forego a little low end torque in favour of higher revving power from there up to peak at 8100rpm. The upside of this is that the bike goes well when revved and has pretty good acceleration for a relatively smallengine’d, cruiser. That said, I get the feeling that the motor is almost certainly holding back a sizable dollop of potential for later models and would benefit from aftermarket pipes etc. The engine is pretty flexible, at 100kph in top gear the engine is ambling along at about 3200rpm and you can let the road speed drop down to as low as 50kph, although it’ll struggle at that point. Up the speed to about 120kph and there’s a bit of a vibe through the bars. But this isn’t the kind of bike you’d buy to do huge mileages on anyway – Indian has other models to cater for those who want to cover big distances – although there’s a quick-release windshield and back rests to augment the bike’s distance ability in the, wellstocked accessory catalogue. I’m not the tallest of riders (five feet nine inches) but was pleased

ood things take time is the regular theme of the television advertisement for Mainland cheese. Kawasaki obviously thinks so too, as it took more than 10 months from the initial showing of its first scooter to the time it hit the New Zealand market. Kawasaki chose last year’s EICMA show in Milan to pull the covers off the J300 – the first scooter to wear a Kawasaki logo. The scooter market is tough with numerous manufacturers represented so rather than starting from scratch, Kawasaki entered an agreement with Taiwanese manufacturer Kymco to base its scooter on the Kymco Downtown 300i. To make the J300, Kawasaki designed a new nose,

screen and front fairing section. The collaboration with Kymco dates back ten years; the two companies established a joint venture operation in China in 2005, each investing $US10 million to form Changzhou Kawasaki and Kwang Yang Engine Co., Ltd. (CK&K) in the Changzhou National Hi-Tech District (CZND), dedicated to the production of high performance general petrol engines. What led Kawasaki to decide it needed a scooter in its model line-up? After all, this is not post-World War II Japan with bombed out infrastructure and a desperate need for private transport. That said, there are many places in the world where public transport is in disarray

Words: Michael ‘Nunchuck’ Esdaile Photos: Geoff ‘Way of the Dragon’ Osbourne

It goes well, stops brilliantly, packs a lot under its sofa-like seat, uses petrol sparingly and quietly sneaks up on you. We (naturally) sent Esdaile to investigate Kawasaki’s first foray into the scooter market…

(Auckland for one), the roads are choked and getting to work is becoming harder. Kawasaki is no stranger to the concept of public transport: it has been building 200km/h + high speed trains for Japan’s Shinkansen network since 1963. In its release blurb, Kawasaki said: “Realising the coming need for innovative urban transport solutions, Kawasaki makes its first foray into the European scooter market with the J300. Offering the comfort and convenience inherent in a big scooter package was a given, but for Kawasaki, urban performance requires more than just these two elements. The J300 seamlessly blends sport, control,

150hp in an adventure bike sounds crazy. Yet KTM’s 1190 Adventure R is eminently useable on the gravel, as Jock McLauchlan found out.

T

he two real heavy-weights of motorcycle adventure travel are the BMW R1200GS and the ‘up-start’ KTM 1190 Adventure R. Sure there are a host of others and Yamaha’s Super Tenere is right up there in the mix too, but the GS and the KTM are generally recognised as the top two contenders for the adventure-tourer crown. Last month we put the hours and miles in on the new water-cooled R1200GS and came away super impressed with the Bavarian Behemoth. It really is a major step-up in every way from the previous model GS. This month we’ve done the same with KTM’s 2014 1190 Adventure; a bike that, on paper at least, is an even more focused adventure weapon than the GS, with its 21/18 inch front/rear wheel combination and genuine dirt bike style suspension. Electronic rider aids are the big news on the 1190 this year. KTM has equipped the 1190 with Bosch’s Motorcycle Stability Control system (MSC). MSC augments and enhances the 2013 electronic package by making the traction control and ABS lean sensitive. KTM says it is the world’s safest motorcycle and is confident that uncontrolled power and brake slides are a thing of the past. The theory is that the further the machine is laid over, the more intrusive the ABS and or the traction control becomes. This all makes perfect sense, as a bike well laid over is only going one way when sudden traction loss occurs – and that is down, whether caused by brake lock up or wheel spin. Of course KTM says this is all possible without

hat were you doing when you were 23-years-old? In your first job? Recently left University? Or maybe just about to head out on your big OE? Well, 23-year-old Rhys Lawrey is part way through a solo circumnavigation of the globe aboard a Triumph Tiger 800XC. But it’s not just ‘any’ solo trip around the planet by motorcycle. No, Rhys has a few goals he wants to achieve along the way. Firstly, he’s aiming to become the

52

youngest person to circumnavigate the world by motorcycle. And, as if that’s not enough, he also wants to break the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive capital cities visited by motorcycle. And as icing on the cake, along the way he’ll be raising funds to support the Princes Trust Youth Charity and hoping to inspire the next generation of young potential motorcyclists. He’s an ambitious chap is Rhys. Rhys also has a Kiwi connection, having

moved to Auckland with family at the age of 11. He started riding at the age of 12 and his first road bike was a BMW F650GS. But it wasn’t long before he took to a Honda Hornet 900 for nipping around the Auckland area during his high-school years. The scale of Rhys’ trip should perhaps come no surprise when Rhys mentions his mum is Julia Sanders, of Kevin and Julia Sanders Globebusters fame - who themselves hold several world

records for motorcycle escapades (Fastest circumnavigation of the globe and the fastest transit from north to south of the Americas). Rhys explains some of the highlights so far, “The trip should be about 80,000km in total. So far I’ve done 35,000km and been through 21 countries since the trip began in the UK. I’ve been through Europe into Turkey, then all the ‘stans [Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan], into China

and then through Laos into Thailand. Then I flew to Perth and rode across to Sydney via Ayers Rock and then shipped from Sydney to Christchurch before looping around the Alps and zig-zagging my way across the North Island. “The biggest country highlight during the first part of the trip has been the month I spent in China. It was a month of ‘wow’ the whole time. I’ve got to say though, the Croatian coast is

phenomenal – the tarmac is beautiful and it just twists beautifully. Such perfect roads for having fun on a bike! The worst bureaucracy I’ve come across was when I was trying to enter Uzbekistan. The officials had me wait in no-man’s-land for six hours in the glaring sun until they let me into the compound. The only shelter I could get was by lying in the shade under the bike. They were the ones with the power and were definitely showing it!

Moto Guzzi V8 -An engineering milestone-

I

t was 2003 before New Zealanders were given the opportunity to see, and just as importantly hear, the fabled Moto Guzzi V8. I use the word fabled, meaning to have no real existence, because that is how many in the 21st century think of this monumental piece of engineering. Most classic racing enthusiasts knew, or at least had heard, about the V8, but few ever thought they would see it, and if it existed at all, it was probably tucked away in an Italian museum. But on a fine day at the 2003 Classic Festival at Pukekohe, the bike burst into life ready for a track demonstration, ridden by road- and off-road celebrity Sammy Miller. It is almost exactly sixty years since Giulio Carcano planted the seeds that resulted in the development of this remarkable machine. It was sparked by the realisation that a 500cc single-cylinder Moto Guzzi engine was no match for the four cylinder Gileras and MV

Agustas, which were rampant on the Grand Prix circuits at the time. Ken Kavanagh, who would become the principal test rider for the V8, had won the 350 Grand Prix at Monza in 1954, but could manage only sixth in the 500 race. Carcano’s solution was to develop an air-cooled straight six, or a water-cooled V8. His design capabilities were well known and highly respected. His work included singles, twins, triples and fours. Some critics said, that this time he had gone too far. The development of the V8 was done in strict secrecy, and it wasn’t until news and a picture of the engine was leaked to a British motorcycle magazine in February 1955 that the motorcycle world knew what Carcano was up to. The completed engine was a 90-degree V8, with a one piece magnesium crankcase mounted transversely across the frame, with a six speed gearbox. Gearing was eventually reduced to five, and

WHIBLEY HEADS HOME TO STAY

I

t’s been one heck of a ride, but Kiwi international Paul Whibley is packing his bags and heading home to stay. With a dozen years of travelling the world to race off-road motorcycles, competing in the world enduro Championships and the Grand National Cross-country Championships (GNCC) in the United States – where he twice won the title outright, in 2008 and 2012 – the former forestry worker the bike world affectionately calls ‘The Axeman’ is ready to settle down. The decision was not easy and not anticipated even a year ago, but Whibley believes it’s time that he, his wife Katherine and their ninemonth-old son Colton entered a different phase of their lives. “I never thought I’d end up where we stand today, 12 years down the track with two GNCC and six OMA (Off-road Motorcycle and ATV) Championships to my credit,” said the 36-year-old Whibley. “I had one perfect OMA season and 17 consecutive wins, and one perfect GNCC hole-shot season, and these are some of the achievements that I’m pretty

proud of”. Whibley has made no immediate schedule for racing at home in New Zealand, “My racing plans are not set for 2015 yet,” he said. “I’m still waiting for Yamaha New Zealand to commit to a programme, but I do plan to race at home. Definitely I have some plans for the Taikorea Motorcycle Park (near Himatangi). We plan to move the Yamaha Taikorea 500 race to a little earlier in the year, around August, to combat the hit and miss dust problem at the current time of year. “We are going to do a Sprint Enduro, like they have in Australia. I would like to try to get a round of the motocross nationals there sometime in the future too. I also have plans for a hill climb-type event and the development of a permanent training/play area for trials bikes too. Some more riding for the kids and give the kids track a refresh. That will do for a start. Stay tuned for the next chapter.”

Motocross season opener throws out a few surprises.

I

t is going to be a sensational season of motocross this summer, especially if Taupo’s Brad Groombridge, Warkworth’s Hamish Dobbyn, Hamilton’s Josiah Natzke and Otago’s Courtney Duncan have anything to do with it. The four-round New Zealand Motocross Championships are just around the corner and it was these riders who demonstrated at the season-opening MX Fest at Taupo over Labour Weekend that they will each be title contenders. National MX1 champion Cody Cooper (The Honda Shop Racing Team), of Mount Maunganui, and national MX2 champion Kayne Lamont (the Mangakino man now back with Yamaha after winning his title with Husqvarna) were at the event too, but merely as spectators while they both continue their recovery from injury, and these two champions may be concerned that their respective positions will be under threat when the four-round 2015 nationals series kicks off near New Plymouth on February 8. The 24-year-old Groombridge, the national MX1 No.3 last season, was in blistering form at MX Fest, winning the MX1 class on Sunday after also coming extremely close to winning the inaugural Speedcross

event on Saturday evening. In a stunning display of riding, Groombridge headed off a series of threats from New Zealand’s elite 450cc riders, including fellow Kiwi internationals Dobbyn (Husqvarna), Queenstown’s Scotty Columb (Altherm JCR Yamaha), Waitakere’s Ethan Martens (Yamaha) and Rotorua’s John Phillips (The Honda Shop Racing Team). If the Moto City Suzuki-supported Groombridge can continue this momentum, he should be a contender to win the MX1 crown in 2015. “I couldn’t quite win the final race of the day [at Taupo] and that would have been a bonus [with an entry into Australia’s famous Manjimup 15,000 Motocross event the prize], and I congratulate Hamish Dobbyn for winning that, but the main aim for me was winning the class outright,” said Groombridge. Meanwhile, Honda rider Ben Townley won the inaugural Speedcross event – a hybrid event that mixes speedway with supercross – on the Saturday night. Former Taupo man Townley swooped in to claim the top prize when the two lead riders in the final race of the night, Groombridge and Dobbyn, collided and crashed just two corners from the end.

H

e’s a hard man to beat… Taupo’s Brad Groombridge has made it back-to-back Acerbis Four-Hour Cross-country race wins in November after charging through the field to win again near Taupo and, even more remarkably, he did it again as a soloist. The 24-year-old raced a Suzuki RM-Z450 to win the MX1 class at the big annual MX Fest motocross extravaganza at Taupo the previous weekend and he showed his versatility to then take his Suzuki RM-X450 model bike and switch over to cross-country mode to win the off-road endurance race in the Tahorakuri Forest, just north of Wairakei. While many of the riders were entered as two-rider teams, Groombridge

80

again won the race riding as an individual, competing as an ‘ironman’, almost a carbon copy of what happened at the event the year before. Runners-up were the two riders who were winners of the rain-abbreviated Suzuki Six-Hour race in October, Auckland’s Chris Power and Palmerston North’s Adam Reeves (sharing the riding duties and each riding their own Yamaha YZ450F), while Taupo pair Greg De Lautour (Yamaha YZ250) and Cameron Dillon (Honda CRF250) rounded out the podium. Sponsored by Suzuki New Zealand, the Epic Events-run race attracted nearly 400 riders to race in the Tahorakuri Forest, between Taupo and Rotorua, some competing in the 90-minute Motomuck 90 junior race that

acted as curtain-raiser and the rest lining up for the gruelling four-hour affair. Power grabbed the holeshot, while Groombridge found himself back in about 20th position as the riders roared out of the dusty start paddock and into the forest for the first time. By the end of lap one, about 40 minutes later, Power appeared first from the trees, and quickly swapped wrist-band with Reeves, while Groombridge arrived second at the pits, about 90 seconds behind Power, and came in for a quick ‘splash and dash’ style fuel top-up. What was unknown to observers at the track was that Warkworth motocross ace Hamish Dobbyn (Husqvarana FC450) had actually caught

and passed Power during that opening lap. But his lead was short-lived when he crashed heavily and seriously injured his right knee, forcing him to withdraw. The race order stabilised over the next four laps, with Power and Reeves holding the advantage, until Groombridge took over at the front with one lap remaining and held on to win easily in the end, slowing down to save energy. Groombridge eventually finished just seven seconds ahead of Reeves. “This sort of riding is great training for motocross,” said Groombridge afterwards. “And it is part of my deal now with Suzuki that I ride these big

What a load of bull Ventura manufactures Bull Bars and Mudflaps for most late-model ATVs, all designed primarily for agricultural or farm use but also useful for a range of other activities, such as hunting, fishing and horticulture. To survive sometimes harsh environments and often plain hard work the Bars are made tough and hot-dip galvanised. The moulded Mudflaps made to complement them will keep the mud and dirt that’s thrown around to a minimum. Distributor: Dold Industries Ltd Price: Varies Info: www.dold.co.nz

Outback Trekker-ing Givi’s Trekker Outback top boxes in silver or black alloy have just arrived to match the popular Trekker Outback panniers. Available in two sizes, 42 litres to fit one full-face helmet and 58-litre to carry two, they can be mounted on existing Monokey racks. The flat lid and four strap loops make it easy to attach extra luggage. Distributor: Eurobike Wholesale Ltd Price: 42-litre $599, 58-litre $699 Info: at www.eurobike.co.nz Who is stopping YOU? Moto-Master’s 270mm oversize Flame rotors could be the perfect solution for MX riders looking for more stopping power. Full floating and cut in an innovative flame design, they offer up to 35 per cent performance gain over stock, and cut weight by up to 20 per cent. The kit includes a rotor, caliper adapter and brake pads. Moto-Master aims for the best-performing and highestquality components in motocross and supermoto, perhaps that’s why KTM’s Factory USA team use them. Distributor: 454 Unlimited Price: $389.95 Info: dirtbikegear.co.nz Series 10 Steps up to the plate O’Neal says its Series 10 Helmet is a step up from the O’Neal Series 3 for the serious rider. Designed to be a top-quality helmet delivering style, comfort and safety it has a lightweight shell, an adjustable visor and multiple oversized vents throughout. There’s a rubber roost nose guard and an ultra-plush removable and washable padded liner to wick away sweat, along with oversized EPS channels to maximise air flow. Distributor: Northern Accessories Price: Cahuilla Creek Graphics $299, Hangtown Carbon $499 Hard-wearing Hardware O’Neal’s Hardware jersey uses a no-fade bold graphic on high-quality moisture-wicking materials. Features include lightweight protective rubber elbow patches, forearm padding and silicone print on its extended tail to keep the jersey tucked in – it uses cooling mesh so the extra layer won’t cause additional heat. And going the extra mile, there’s no scratchy label in the neck, and a micro cuff to ensure it’s not restrictive. Distributor: Northern Accessories Price: $69.95 Tyres with a sting in the tail Pirelli’s Scorpion Trail tyres are aimed at sporting performance off road. We’re told they use a revolutionary tread pattern that varies around the tyre to maximise handling traction and grip across a range of conditions, with a patented 0° steel-belt technology in radial sizes to provide maximum stability and excellent handling on every kind of terrain, even when fully loaded. Distributor: Nationwide Accessories Price: RRP from $179.00 Hardware for legs O’Neal’s Hardware trou may be made of heavy-duty hardwearing fabrics but they’re also lighter, with an extra-long heat shield and lightweight rubber patches incorporating an air intake designed to keep you cool, no matter how hard-out you ride. An adjustable belt keeps them in place, seat padding for better comfort and wide accordion knees to accommodate knee braces complete the picture, along with stretch Spandex for extra flex, and triple stitching so critical areas can hack the pace. Distributor: Northern Accessories Price: $199

Bagged at the Track The O’Neal track wheelie bag features one large compartment for your high-bulk gear, two boot compartments to keep the worst muck and odours away from the rest of your stuff, two small outer pockets and venting throughout. Conventional handles too – but who wants to lug the weight of an 838mm by 457 by 381mm bag after a hard day at the track, or through airports? So there’s a telescopic handle and smooth-rolling wheels, plus cool graphics. Distributor: Northern Accessories Price: $179

Taking the bike on an overseas tour, or buying or selling overseas? Want someone who knows bikes and knows how they should be handled?

27/11/14 12:01

Then call us-we have years of experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US....
