Welcome to the July issue of Kiwi Rider. The KTM 1290 Super Duke R and the MV Agusta Brutale RR ‘super-nakeds’ have quite literally wowed us with their blend of practical riding positions and fiery performance. This genre of bike is where the new model action seems to be coming from at the moment. In fact, MV Agusta has also just released two more 800cc naked triples to the NZ market – the launch report is in the news section (and we’ll have a full test of the new machines in the next issue). Harley Davidson is pushing new boundaries with the UltraGlide. The big cruiser features water-cooled cylinder heads – a first for HD after a whole history of air-cooled only machines. ‘Big’ Dave Cohen, our Harley aficionado, came back

smiling after his test ride. The National Enduro Series has been a one-way battle with Auckland’s Chris Birch dominating in fine style. And his Performance at the No Way In Hell Extreme Enduro was similarly impressive – using it as some training to get ready for Romaniacs. The KTMsponsored Extreme Series produces stunning riding from our top enduro riders. If you missed the rounds this year, then it really is worth going to see a round – it’s jaw-dropping what these boys and girls can do. Michael Esdaile has been taking a look at the Sleeping Dragon – China’s motorcycle industry. RPHA ST Sport Touring helmet The latest addition to HJC’s RPHA series helmets is the RPHA ST Sport Touring helmet. IPONE – Brake Fluid 300 We’re told this 100 per cent synthetic fluid was developed by racing research and development experts in competition brake systems. The main advantage it’s designed to bring is an extremely high boiling point (300°C) for perfect fluid stability. That should make the brake lever more precise and give extremely consistent braking, or so GP testing indicates, and that’s about as intense as you can get. Situation Vacant Parts & Warehouse Assistant We require somebody to carry out general warehouse duties as directed by the Parts and Warehouse manager. To be aware of, and follow, warehouse safety procedures. To work as part of the Warehouse team. Responsibilities are: • To prepare orders of motorcycle parts, oils and bikes, this includes picking of stock. • To load and unload trucks. • To be responsible for the safekeeping of company vehicles and property. • Stock control. • To be able to deal efficiently with enquiries and correspondence from the dealer network. • To communicate effectively with colleagues. • Unpacking and checking off inwards goods accurately. • Maintain clean and tidy warehouse. • Ensure compliance with relevant company policies, procedures and in general take any reasonable steps and precautions to protect or minimise harm to the workplace, the environment and our employees. • Other duties as required. Bridge House Lodge GASTROM RIDER Dave Wyatt The Easter break this year had Kiwi riders digging out the wet weather gear for a precursor of winter. A cyclone had crossed the ditch and in true Easter fashion, hit our shores just in time for the holidays. It packed a pretty powerful punch, lifting roofs, cutting power, and dropping trees in its path. The good news was it brought muchneeded rain, and the worst of it passed within 48 hours. After spending a day cleaning up the property, it was definitely time for a ride. A jaunt along SH16 is always good for the soul: add to that a stop-off for some lunch, and the Easter break began to look brighter. The pit stop today was the Bridge House Lodge, in Warkworth. Its history stems right back to the 1850s, when it was the home of the town’s founder, Anderson Brown. As it was the first building in the area it was used as a post office, and since then a number of businesses have traded within its walls, including a bakery and an ice cream parlour. The building as it stands now boasts accommodation, with 14 rooms plus en suite bathrooms, a great bar and restaurant, and dining overlooking the Mahurangi River. The setting alone is worth a visit from a road-weary traveller, and the menu will have you wanting to try everything. The co-pilot on this trip, my wife Sue, decided on the chicken

sandwich, a chicken fillet with bacon, brie and salad all on toasted ciabatta, with a side of fries accompanied by a tomato kasundi. My choice was going to be the market fish, but the duty manager suggested the Hoteo Hog, Baby Back Ribs. It came with a sticky hoisin sauce, fries and a salad. Both dishes were great, and I’m glad I was persuaded to give the ribs a try.

The Bridge House menu boasts some great New Zealand fare, and also has gourmet pizzas to tempt your taste buds. The prices are reasonable and the service was quick and efficient. The Bridge House really is worth a stop, and if you find you have had a couple too many to ride home, the accommodation is well priced as well, so there is no excuse not to have a memorable experience. The weather held good, and we could have sat there all day soaking up the rays, but the rain radar indicated showers, and heavy ones at that, so we decided to get out while the going was

good, and managed to dodge the showers all the way home. As a destination pit stop, the Bridge House has it all and I will be back. ■

Darryl says “I was a member of the Manawata Orion Motorcycle Club at that time. The under-200cc enduro class for MX was very popular – we often had 30 bike starts!” Right: This is our Jock aged 18, looking young and fresh-faced, riding a Yamaha IT250 at the Hawk’s Bay Enduro before the 1983 International Six Days Enduro. “In the actual ISDE I rode a Husqvarna 430. It was a tough event. Tjebbe Bruin got taken out by a spectator, who was riding in the opposite direction – it caused something of a spectacle. And most of the Aussies DNF’d. It was rutty, it was poxy, but good for us Kiwis because we’re used to riding in those kinds of conditions. Most of the team battled through to bronze medals.” 134 KIWI RIDER
