THE ED’S NEW THREADS As anyone who’s been around a bit knows there’s a fine line between being 100% happy with your riding gear and starting to think about its replacement. That line arrived for me late last year so I got on the phone to talk up a new set of leathers. As luck would have it, Nationwide Accessories had just introduced a new brand, RST Racewear, to their local lineup and before I knew it a set of one-piece Fusion leathers, Rift summer-weight leather gloves, Diadora Eagle FX boots and – to top it all off – an AGV GP-Tech Simoncelli replica helmet were being couriered to Kastle KR. The GP-Tech is AGV’s top-shelf helmet and is the base for the helmets MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi (amongst others like Marco Simoncelli) wear. Over the years plenty of people at service stations, cafes, shops etc have commented on the helmets I’ve been carrying with me, usually attracted by the graphics. Few believe me when – if asked – I tell them the lid is worth over $1,000 but even when I was buying my own a helmet was something I 1) never stinted on and 2) never regretted never stinting on. Ease a GP-Tech on to your head and you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see where the $1,399 RRP goes either. Comfort is nothing short of sumptuous, and the quality of the flat-plane anti-scratch, anti-fog visor has to be experienced to be believed. A major challenge chain lubes must address is that there is not a sump available to hold lubricant and continually supply it to the chain. This means that once the chain lube is applied, it must stay in place. Possible threats to a lubricant can be dirt carrying it away, washout by water, and most significantly, being thrown from the chain by centrifugal forces. The spinning of the chain around the sprockets causes most chain lubricants to migrate to the outer surfaces of the chain, leaving critical areas unprotected. Once on the outer edge of the chain, many of these lubricants will then “fling-off” the chain on to fenders, swing arms and leathers. Chain wax is one attempt to solve this problem, but it is not too efficient. Wax type lubricants have some good features for ‘O’ ring chain lubrication, however there are some significant drawbacks: 1. It cannot penetrate between the rollers and bushings so the most good it can do is to keep the side plates from rusting. 2. The naturally occurring oils in waxes tend to evaporate, decreasing the lubricating effect of the wax. 3. The tackiness of wax tends to attract dirt and grime to the chain.
That is where Bel-Ray Super Clean comes in. Bel-Ray Super Clean Chain Lube takes every benefit of the waxes and the best lubricating oils with the drawbacks engineered out. It was developed with a high vapor pressure solvent (evaporates quickly) that allows the lubricating chemicals to penetrate the chain and spread out evenly on all surfaces. Once the solvent evaporates, the film takes on the coating characteristics of a slippery solid lubricant, creating a smooth, white coating around the chain that will not fling off. Another feature is its ability to provide shock load cushioning and extreme pressure lubrication to the pivot points of the chain. Properly applied, Bel-Ray Super Clean will coat the rollers inside and out. This cushions the load and greatly reduces noise and friction. The other main purpose of chain lube is to protect the chain. The best time to apply chain lube is to spray the chain while it is still warm after a ride. It is important that the attached spray hose be used. Hold the tip one to two inches away and start spraying the outer side of the chain as you spin the rear wheel. Slowly traverse the spray with each revolution of the chain to coat both sides and the center of the chain. The chain is properly lubed after four (4) full evolutions of the chain are completed. After nearly 10 months of profuse sweating and constant roost my Forbes & Davies-supplied Airoh Stelt Senior selflessly sacrificed its life for mine during the Whangamata enduro. After being ejected from a nasty highside at well over 60km/h during a special test, I hit a sharp rock square on the temple of my helmet. HOW TO RADIATOR BRACES
INSTALLING GYTR RADIATOR BRACES Aside from the exhaust and front disc, the most crucially exposed pieces of hardware on your bike are the radiators. If, like me, you’ve winced over the price of replacing a radiator then a relatively inexpensive set of radiator braces should be a mandatory part of your protection system. Step 1 Step 2
If you’re a descendant of Burt Munro’s then you’ve probably made your own set by now. For the rest of us mortals it’s straight into the local bike shop for a gander at the vast array of accessory catalogues and out with some hard earned wedge. For this little project I got my hands on some USA-made GYTR Radiator Braces to suit my Yamaha-supplied long-term 2010 YZ450F. Being genuine Yamaha parts they are a little dearer than some cheaper aftermarket brands but are gorgeously finished pieces of aluminium supplied with all the necessary bolts and washers.

sort of simulating MX rig controlled by a freckly technician with an extremely malevolent nature; so they’re pretty much guaranteed to fit perfectly...and last. Installing the braces can be a time consuming but well rewarding process. It’s a multi-step procedure attacking one side at a time, so we will kick off installation on the left-hand radiator. Before you start make sure the bike is secure on a stand and that all surface areas are clean. LEFT-HAND SIDE Step 1 Grab your 8 & 10mm t-bars and start removing all the plastics surrounding the radiator. The fuel tank can stay in place.

Step 2 Once you have the radiator exposed, set about unbolting the front radiator louvre guard, but leave it sitting in its original position. Also remove the first M8 engine brace bolt closest to the radiator.
Step 9
Step 3 Using the stock washer head bolt lightly secure the upper part of the GYTR Radiator Brace to the radiator; do not fasten. Holding the brace up against the frame grab one of the supplied M8 flange bolts and insert into the empty engine mount hole, lightly secure. You can now tighten the stock washer head bolt on the radiator to 7Nm. Once secured tighten the supplied M8 flange bolt to 45Nm. Step 4 Reattach all plastic shrouds and guards as usual, making sure you torque each washer head bolt to 7Nm. RIGHT-HAND SIDE Step 5 Like the left-hand side, remove all plastic guards surrounding the fuel tank.

Step 6 Drain the radiators of all fluid into a clean bucket for later use, remember to release the radiator cap. If you don’t know where to find the drain plug look up the process in your manual.

Step 7 Remove the top end of the long radiator hose that goes from the outer top right of the cylinder to the top of the right-hand radiator. Then grab the black plastic protection sleeve tube from the supplied kit and slide it over the radiator hose to around midway. Step 8 Using a heat gun or your missus’s high powered hair dryer, gently heat the black sleeve tube until it shrinks firmly around the radiator hose and then reinstall the radiator hose to the top of the radiator. Step 9 Repeat steps 2 – 4 from the left-hand side process to install the GYTR Radiator Brace.

Step 10 Before you reattach all the plastic guards and shrouds, refill the radiators as per the owner’s manual with either fresh new anti-freeze or the coolant drained from the bike earlier. Reinstall all bodywork. Job done. Now, time to ride! KR
