elcome to the June issue of Kiwi Rider. We’re seeing more and more machines populating the lower capacity classes – specifically within the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme. They’re affordable to buy and far cheaper to run than most motorcycles, let alone a four-wheeler, for getting to work. Honda’s CBR300R is a case in point. Not only is it cheap to run, which is pretty much a given, but at 300cc it’s got enough go to make it a fun bike to ride – whether commuting or popping out for a spin at the weekend. At KR we’re pleased to see manufacturers making bikes specifically for this class. Turn to page 31 for more. KIDS COMPETITION

Y

amaha Motor New Zealand, in collaboration with Sony New Zealand, has launched a fun-filled social media competition with some fantastic prizes up for grabs. The Yamaha Kids Video Contest on Yamaha Motor New Zealand’s Facebook Page is your opportunity to showcase to them just how much of a good time you and the family have had on your Yamaha this year. Entering is easy and the prize cupboard at Yamaha HQ in Auckland is bursting at the seams with Sony NZ products to give away. To enter, all you have to do is edit a short 2min video of yourself and the family having a great time on your Yamaha fun bike and submit this through their Facebook Page using the instructions provided. You’ll then be able to share your entry with friends and extended family, as well as vote on other video submissions. And the more votes your video gets, the better the chance it has of winning; with the top 5 videos going through to a final judging panel made up of Yamaha NZ staff and Josh Coppins to decide the top three grand-prize winners. Your efforts won’t go unnoticed as well because Sony New Zealand is providing awesome prices, including a Sony 48”

Full HD LED LCD Smart TV for 1st Place, the latest Sony HD Action Cam with Live View Remote Control for 2nd Place, while 3rd Place could win a super-handy Sony SmartBand Talk, perfect for pairing to your Android phone. So if you’ve got some footage of you and the family having a great time with

your Yamaha fun bike on your smartphone, camcorder or digital camera then dig it out and get editing. You’ve got until May 31. Visit Yamaha NZ’s Facebook page at www. facebook.com/YamahaMotorcyclesNZ for more information.

HUSQVARNA ICE-SUPERMOTO TEASERS Husqvarna is launching its new Supermoto 701 with a series of teaser videos of the bike on a frozen lake – complete with spiked tyres. The video so far is tantalising and frustrating all at the same time. We can’t wait for more teasers to appear. Go visit www.701supermoto.com and see for yourself.

LETTERS BIKES IN MOTORWAY BUS LANES Thought that readers of your fine magazine might want to understand a bit more about bus lanes on motorways and motorcycle use thereof in and around city centres (especially as some of us are tempted to sneak on to them during rush-hour)? Here is a really good response from Warwick, Traffic Safety Engineer at NZTA that he sent me when I asked about any consideration being given the bike use in these lanes.

DAVE MORSE Reply: Your communication to Auckland Transport (A.T.), to enquire whether motorcycles could be permitted to travel in the “bus lanes” along Auckland’s State Highway (SH)1 Northern Motorway, on the approaches to the Auckland Harbour Bridge (AHB), has been forwarded to the New Zealand Transport Agency (the Transport Agency) for direct response.

The ‘bus lanes’ that Auckland Transport has established on arterial city streets are usually in relatively low-speed (50 km/h) urban environments, and were constructed as normal running lanes. These lanes are generally available to buses, cycles, mopeds and motorcycles on specified days of the week and at peak travel times and, unsurprisingly, are signed as ‘BUS LANE’. However, the shoulders of motorways are primarily emergency stopping areas and were not constructed as – or intended to be - running lanes. They are generally at a lower level than the main carriageway and not surfaced with the same material. Restricting the use of clearly defined sections of the motorway shoulders to timetabled commuter bus services at specified peak times on weekdays – only when the motorway is congested – means the Transport Agency can achieve some control over driver behaviour. Only licensed bus operators currently use the

shoulder lanes and advice and direction on shoulder lane use forms part of the training programme for bus drivers. If inappropriate driver behaviour is observed, it is addressed through the bus operators, ensuring that both usage and speed are managed safely. These part-time bus facilities are signed as ‘BUS ONLY’ lanes. If vehicles in general – and particularly motorcycles – were to use the shoulder as a normal running lane (at normal speeds) there would be safety issues with vehicles moving on and off the shoulder with the different carriageway heights and different levels of skid resistance. The stability of motorcyclists would be of particular concern when moving to or from the shoulder. If motorcyclists were permitted to ride on the shoulders the number of lane changes would be greater than normal because the main carriageway shoulders end at on and off-ramps and motorcyclists would need

Stephen Briggs and Andrew Stroud – demonstrating their race-winning Brittens

The 2015 John Britten Tribute Sound of Thunder was held at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, near Christchurch on February 21-22 and drew the crowds. The Sound of Thunder race meeting is a hugely popular event and has been run for over 30 years by the BEARS Motorcycle Club. This year was a rather special occasion as the club organised an impressive display of Britten Motorcycles as a fitting tribute for the 20th Anniversary of motorcycling losing John Britten. Spectators were treated to on track display rides of various Brittens, which most certainly added to the sound of thunder. BEARs World Champ Andrew Stroud and BEARs runner-up Stephen Briggs were on hand to demonstrate the Brittens in a display ride around the Ruapuna circuit, much to the appreciation of Britten fans. Three steps, three manufacturers, three Italians...

Rossi’s rennaissance has started

It is shaping up as a vintage year for MotoGP. After just three races we have witnessed a Ducati renaissance, the return of Suzuki to the top 10 and a resurgent Valentino Rossi, the Italian already equalling his win tally from the entire 18 race 2014 season. KIWI RIDER

W

ell, no... err… apart from the name. Shiver? What were the Italians thinking? I am reliably told that the designers at Aprilia liked the idea that the bike would give you a shiver of excitement. To us English speaking folk it is seems an odd choice for a motorcycle model name but admittedly it does sound a little better if you say it in Italianese as “Shee-ver”. Thankfully, that’s where the oddities end though. This street bike enters the New Zealand market at $13,999 and for that you get a 750cc 90-degree vee-twin with a great chassis and good suspension that’s designed to be fun around town and fast on the back roads. The ABS equipped model is available for around $1000 more. Although the Shiver is somewhat of an entry level middle-weight machine for the Italian bike maker, it doesn’t mean you’re getting entry level quality and components. No, upon immediate inspection you can clearly see the elegance of design and how well it’s put together.

QUALITY RIDE The Shiver has been around for quite a few years and we’ve been a bit quiet on it here at KR… until now. With the recent domination of the World Superbike manufacturer’s titles it is clear they know a thing or two about production bikes. This expertise filters down into bikes such as the Shiver with an excellent modular steel trellis chassis as the starting block to build around. The engineers opted for a set of Sachs 43mm upside-down forks and a cantilever, non-linkage shock, which features adjustable spring preload and rebound damping. The package works well, starting off a little firm from brand new but beds in nicely. The Shiver encourages you to flow quickly through corners and maintain your speed on exit. The chassis turns in really nicely with

36

KIWI RIDER

minimal effort and the whole package feels very sure-footed. Despite looking tall with the under seat exhaust pipes, the Shiver has a reasonable seat height of 810mm. The seat is narrower than that of previous Shiver models but it is still wide enough that shorter riders may find themselves on tip-toes. Those twin exhausts are made from stainless steel and meet at the collector under the seat before exiting with a pleasant twin thump at the tail-end of the bike. In winter the seat will be fabulous as it warms slightly from the heat generated by the under-seat pipes. It’s not excessive, but enough to be appreciated in the cooler months.

the COMEBACK kid

After quietly disappearing from Honda’s range for a couple of years, the stalwart VFR is back with more than just new clothes.

H

onda’s VFR motorcycles have trodden a path rich in history and accumulated more than a few interesting tales. ‘Rocket’ Ron Haslam took a standard machine from dealer’s showroom and placed it third at a rain-soaked Donington Park during the 1986 Transatlantic Trophy, and our very own Aaron Slight could tell a few stories on the development of the V4 race machines through the 90s. Tales aside, it is interesting that Honda has decided to pull the VFR out of the stable for another stint after a four year break. Put out to pasture by the VFR1200 many riders who would have been in this market were forced to look elsewhere, or to the ST1300. The sports touring middleweight was gone but clearly not forgotten. The VFR-VTEC stayed essentially the same bike from when it was introduced in 2002 until last year. Updated in 2014, from a design point of view it looks as though Honda has re-released the machine without blowing the development budget but there are some really nice changes and additions and it stays fairly true to the last model. Happily, for VFR fans, the new bike is still easily recognisable as a VFR800.

VTEC

It seems Honda has listened to the comments regarding the VTEC variable valve actuation (Variable Timing and lift Electronic Control) being harsh in its transition between the two- and four-

valve motor operation and tried to smooth these out. New cam profiles are said to boost torque around the VTEC-activation range (6500rpm) and help disguise the point at which the extra valves are activated. While it is definitely an improvement, you will still feel the change as the motor engages the other two valves per cylinder. The other thing to note is that it is a little cold blooded. The VTEC motor is a little like a two-stroke until it warms up, so let it idle a little before setting off for optimum riding. Initially the bottom and mid-range feel a little lacking when compared when the engine is in full swing, which further intensifies that two-stroke effect. But that’s not the whole story, it’s actually deceptively quick – it’s just the kick of power above 6500rpm makes it seem lacking. This system makes it a tale of two motors; one that seems a little flat at low revs (although it’s not) and the other is a bit of a free-revving screamer. While the VFR still ‘only’ puts out around 100hp it’s plenty enough to have a good time. I was not left thinking that I must have another 30hp on tap for the twisty roads.

UPDATES

The twin-spar alloy frame is identical to that used on the previous model. However, the diecastaluminum subframe is new, and gone are the model-identifying twin under seat pipes that have been a feature of the VFR since it gained VTEC way back in 2002. The new subframe features mount points for genuine Honda luggage.

Te Kuiti to New Plymouth and Cook Strait After a raiding party in the winterless north and a sortie into the Coromandel, Beks and the DR200S have ridden off into the distance on a quest to explore the rest of New Zealand. Words & photos: Rebekah ‘Beks’ Ellis

T

he weather was supporting my choice to hang West on the way south from Auckland and I cruised through Te Kuiti, the 'Shearing Capital of the World'. Scenic and sweeping, this route takes you along the SH3 and through the Mangaotaki Gorge. The Awakino Gorge and Mokau River, 5km south of Awakino was once the boundary between two Maori tribal areas the Waikato and the Taranaki and was the site of much tribal fighting. The road approaches the coast with stunning views out across the Tasman Sea, and links down through the quaint yet charming townships of Awakino, Mokau and Tongaporutu from where the summit of Mount Messenger provides climbs and ascents through native

bush, which were a delight to experience on the light and nimble-handling DR. Staying with 'friend's of friends'' in New Plymouth allowed me to spruce myself and the DR up – we’d been camping for several nights so were both a little dusty. I also had time to explore both the inner route around the beautiful, dormant volcano of Mt Taranaki and the external, coast route of SH45. Of the two, I preferred the inner route as a more interesting and challenging ride for the DR. Pukeiti has some exciting hairpins deep amongst the rhododendrons. I took the opportunity to stop off at Dawson Falls, admiring the unique power station that nestles there and still provides electricity from the river. The outer route affords good views

of the mountain and some ghostly, Art Deco style dairies. These buildings are now mostly in ruins after the dairies moved to bigger factories. The cows leave behind some mighty slippery 'gifts' on the road so take care if it's wet! Living just nine miles from the birth place of Shakespeare, Stratford-upon-Avon in the UK, arriving in Stratford, New Zealand I was intrigued to discover every street has been named after a character from a Shakespeare play. Testing my knowledge as I rode through, I had to hang my head in shame at my inability to name more than a handful of plays. While riding and pondering in my helmet it occurred to me I was about to experience my first 'summer' birthday. Having had a lifetime of winter birthdays, I woke up on the day in a

lovely campsite at Kai Iwi Beach. Blessed with a sandy bay and the most extraordinarily daring 'flying-fox' that I've ever seen in a kids playground (it actually goes out over a river!) I was welcomed by fellow campers, who on learning it was my birthday asked me to join them for a breakfast of bacon and eggs. Once again a little gem of hospitality, warmth and friendship that the Kiwi's are so rightly famed for, we swapped details and promises of riding together once I returned from the South Island. I arrived at Wanganui, and had a warm welcome at Suzuki HQ where Dayna and Steve showed me the latest fully 'off-road' DR200. All pleasantries such as indicators and mirrors removed and some serious rubber applied - it was my DR but not as I knew it! I didn’t fancy

swapping though, mirrors are handy things when watching for camper vans. A rather fantastic birthday ride took me up through the Whanganui National Park to the small village of Pipiriki. My map had prepared me for this route to be gravel however it has now been tar-sealed all the way through to Raetihi. High, twisty and with spectacular views of the river all the way, it was a pretty breathtaking route. After all the excitement of my birthday (I even treated myself to tea and cake in town) I was shattered so decided to spend another night at Wanganui Top 10 Holiday park rather than press on down the coast. It was a good thing that I did....as I rolled into the park I noticed that every single chalet, tent, and park cabin had a

BMW motorcycle parked outside. What a spot of luck, a friendly bunch of enthusiasts united for their AGM, they welcomed the 'intruder' and the Suzuki slipped in amongst the beemers. I was encouraged to participate in some rideouts alongside the larger machines, and the plucky DR didn't disappoint. Indeed she saw me safely through the all-day ride to Taihape including around 100km of gravel with aplomb. The following morning a small queue formed, it seemed the DR was the bike of choice on which to complete the group’s Gymkhana. The nimble handling, lack of weight and agility saw her win the competition – although, sadly, not with me on board! Taking SH3 and then SH1 cruising south, the BMWs gradually dispersed and I took the

KIWI RIDER NATZKE MOVES ON UP

H

e raced his CMR Red Bull KTM 125 to back-to-back senior national title wins in New Zealand in 2014 and again this season and that was just the beginning as his international career now takes off in the motocross hot-bed of Europe. Although he could not manage another podium finish, as he had at the opening round of this year’s European 125cc Motocross Championships (EMX125) in Italy a week ago, the KTM rider did manage to improve upon his championship rankings with another solid display at round two of the series in the Netherlands at the weekend. The New Zealand champion battled fiercely at the circuit at Valkenswaard on Saturday and Sunday, finishing 12th and 10th in his two races, which was good enough for him to claim 10th overall for the GP. It was also sufficient for the 16-year-old from Hamilton to move up one position in the championship standings and he is now ranked fourth in the EMX125 class rankings. “It was a tough weekend in Valkenswaard, but I gave it my all in both motos and pushed until the chequered flag,” Natzke said. He said the competition is fierce, with a large number of riders capable of winning. The positive is that Natzke knows he has the speed

of the fastest riders, and it’s just a complete performance that is required to get on the podium. “I had never heard of some of these riders before and they were super-fast, but I know I can certainly hold the pace up front. There is lots to learn from and put in the memory bank. Thanks to the people behind me supporting me all weekend.” said Natzke. Finnish KTM rider Miro Sihvonen won the day overall at Valkenswaard, finishing runner-up in the first race and then winning the next, sharing the day’s points with Spanish KTM rider Jorge Prado Garcia, who finished 1-2. However, Prado Garcia lost out on the count-back rule for the overall GP glory. Prado Garcia does now lead the series overall, one point ahead of Sihvonen, with French Yamaha rider Maxime Renaux, the leader after round one, now slipping to third in the championship standings, seven points behind the two KTM riders. The next round of the EMX125 championships is set for Talavera, in Spain, on May 10. The eight-round series then heads to the Matterley, near Winchester, in southern England, on May 24, with rounds to follow in France (Villars sous Ecot, May 31), Italy (Maggiora, June

14), Belgium (Lommel, August 2) and, finally, back in The Netherlands (at Assen on August 30). Natzke is racing for the KTM Factory Juniors team, which is led by Belgian 10-time motocross world champion Stefan Everts.

BROAD CLINCHES TITLE IN NAILBITING FINISH But, when the day dawned for the second of three days on Saturday, the contrasts could not have been more extreme, hot sun rapidly drying the track and the host North King Country Motorcycle Club’s team of dedicated volunteers swinging into a fever of activity to take advantage of the break in the weather, restoring the track to its pristine best. Racing was reduced from seven to five races for each class over the weekend but the

Getting the bike to look as if you’ve spent hours cleaning it could be as simple as squirting it on, to create a sparkling shine on metal, plastic and rubber parts, while leaving a film that sits between oncoming dirt and the metal beneath, so it’ll be easier to clean next time around. Distributor: Forbes & Davies Price: $21 Info: forbesanddavies.co.nz

Geomax-imum attack over shifting sands Dunlop’s Geomax MX11 was designed to take on the sandiest conditions and deliver. You’re promised outstanding traction over sandy terrain, and excellent stability on bumps, humps and uneven surfaces – plus the delightful discovery that woops and ruts are no obstacle. Dunlop says race development feedback helped produce a tyre that allows you to push your machine with total confidence in tough conditions. Yet clever cross knobs in the central pattern also help increase the tread life on hard-packed surfaces. AJP PR3 240 MX Pro Suitable for new riders, those who aren’t so confident, riders short of leg, female riders and juniors, AJP’s PR3 240 is incredibly versatile. And something of a bargain.

T

ester Jock McLauchlan raved about the fullsized PR4 Extreme in the October issue of the mag and this bike, the AJP PR3 240 Enduro, is a smaller-wheeled version. Think of it as a three-quarter sized machine for those who want something a little smaller and easier to handle (and pick up) than a full-sized dirt bike, which are often exceptionally tall. The PR3 shares the same air-cooled, two-valve fourstroke motor as the PR4 Extreme but mounted into a smaller chassis with less bling components. The motor pumps out 20hp with a linear delivery of its power and torque. As Jock said in his test of the PR4, “The type of power it has is perfect for learning on, for novice to intermediate-level trail riders and also for the farming community” and he’s right. This is a very pleasant motor and one that has enough power to drag our Vege around off-road. It’s quiet too, nobody is going to get annoyed with the PR3 riding around the paddock or out on a trail. The bike comes with an aluminium bashplate, lights and a digital dash straight from the showroom so there’s no need for more spend once you’ve bought it. This is an NZ specific model which comes with both a headlight and a number-board so more adventurous riding won’t lead to a broken light. On top of that the air-cooled motor is simple and there aren’t any radiators to break in the event of a spill – which, let’s face it, is a common occurrence for novice or junior riders. When they do crash it’s a sturdy bike and parts aren’t expensive; we trashed a front mudguard and a new one was roughly $80. The big bonus of the PR3 is its electric start. For riders new to motorcycling, getting the hang of kickstarting a bike can take time and it’s tricky if they’re on a slope facing the wrong way too. Electric start solves all of those problems so they can concentrate on riding rather than worrying about how they’ll start the thing if they stall it or take a tumble. The bike also comes with a kick-start backup so the new rider can learn to do that at their leisure.

Husqvarna

T

he Husqvarna TC85 is very different to any other bike I have ridden before. It has great responsive power with heaps of bottom-end. It pulls through to mid-range really well, even if you’re in too high a gear. It has heaps of top-end too, making it great to ride on open and flowing tracks. I think the stock gearing is good for our home track, but I would probably gear it down a tooth to get it in the power more easily. The ergonomics are quite different to other bikes I have ridden too. The plastics are very

98

KIWI RIDER

streamlined and narrow. The foot pegs are higher and further forwards, making them closer to the seat and front of the bike, and the handle bars are wider compared to those on the Kawasaki KX85 I’ve been racing. I find this set up suits me really well because it sits me in a great riding position and allows me to lay it over more in the ruts without the footpeg scraping and filling with dirt. The Husqvarna stock suspension is great and works really well. All we had to do was adjust the loaded/rider sag to suit my weight and then

TC85

KR’s Junior tester James Scott gave the Husky TC85 a pasting to figure out what makes it tick. He came away rather impressed… Words: James Scott / Photos: Geoff Osborne

SECOND OPINION Up close, I thought the colours of my KX – green and black with a dash of blue – looked better than the Husqvarna’s yellow, white and blue. After a few laps I could feel it has more power and a different delivery to my KX too. This is because it made me stay down and drive out of the corners, and I found it easier to come out of the ruts as well. I think that being able to adjust the suspension helps with the cornering and is a big plus for the serious rider.

WILLIAM HAKIWAI-MAIKUKU

make a few clicker adjustments. With those changes it was mint and handled a lot of the bigger jumps without any issues. The KTM-branded brakes have so much stopping ability, allowing you to ride into corners as fast as you like knowing it will pull up without any problem at all. Overall, I really enjoyed testing the Husqvarna, it is a great bike with many qualities for the motocross rider. Straight out of the box with only clicker adjustments the engine, suspension, brakes and ergonomics are all great – this is a really good package.

As some of you who follow Junior MX might now, I’ve now changed bikes and am now riding the TC85. I rode it at the recent NZ Junior MX Nationals in Otorohanga and placed 3rd in the 13-16yr 85cc class. Getting this bike set up for the Nationals was as simple as an ECU and a Husqvarna Power Parts pipe – a very simple process for my Dad to fit to, and improve, the bike. The TC85 is the most competitive bike I have ridden to date and I really enjoyed racing the TC85 at the Nationals. I’m excited about what I can achieve on this bike with more time on it!

We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. TWINWALL®

FATBAR® $199 Shot peened surface finish to help prevent fatigue failure

$259

Ultra high strength inner tube is hard anodised to resist wear from twist grip and throttle

Outer tube has extreme resistance to mechanical damage and is anodised to prevent corrosion

Renthal’s copyrighted bonded lightweight single bolt, clamp and brace system

Knurled grip area increases bonding between bars and grips

1-1/8" BRACELESS HANDLEBAR. The Renthal Fatbar® features a tapered outer wall resulting in a 1-1/8" (28.6mm) clamping diameter and 7/8" diameter at control ends. This profiled wall and brace-less design combines excellent strength with good flexibility. KTM and Suzuki have chosen the Renthal Fatbar® as the ultimate brace-less handlebar and have fit them as original equipment where this design is preferred within their range of motocross models.

Knurled grip area increases bonding between bars and grips

THE WORLD’S STRONGEST AND SAFEST HANDLEBAR. Renthal’s revolutionary Twinwall® handlebar is the world’s strongest motocross handlebar produced. An oversized diameter, 1-1/8" (28.6mm) handlebar which utilises two tubes, one within the other, borrows principles from aircraft design and gives the Twinwall® the best combination of strength, lightweight and safety. By utilising two tubes throughout the handlebar, we are effectively increasing the wall thickness in the most highly stressed areas of the handlebar which increases its fatigue life.

Tapered outer wall to 7/8" increases strength and allows use of standard grips and controls

1-1/8" large diameter clamping area

7/8" HANDLEBARS

THE ORIGINAL 7/8" (22.2mm) DIAMETER HANDLEBAR. First introduced in 1969 as an upgrade to the stock steel handlebars which came on the off-road motorcycles of that era, the Renthal 7/8" (22.2mm) aluminium handlebar revolutionized the industry with far superior materials and innovative design. Our alloy handlebars offered more strength, more flex, more vibration dampening and improved rider comfort. Renthal aluminium handlebars quickly became the industry standard for decades to come. The highest quality materials, engineering and craftsmanship have allowed Renthal 7/8" handlebars to win more championships than any other handlebar in the world. At our UK manufacturing facility, we are constantly seeking more advanced materials and manufacturing methods which has resulted in a handlebar that is 20% stronger than any other 7/8" handlebar made. Renthal 7/8" handlebars have come as standard equipment on Honda’s CR and CRF motocross bikes since 2004 and on Kawasaki’s KX and KX-F motocross bikes since 2006.

DUAL COMPOUND—SOFT AND DURABLE. Renthal dual compound grips combine the durability of Renthal firm compound grips with the feel and vibration absorption qualities of Renthal soft grips. A firm compound is used for the flange, inner sleeve and outer end of the grip for maximum durability. A soft compound is used for the outer layer of the grip which is in direct contact with the palm, fingers and thumb for improved feel.

TAPERED DUAL COMPOUND GRIPS. The Tapered Grip breaks new ground in ergonomics for MX riders. In addition to all the benefits of our standard dual compound grip, the tapered grip features and oversized thumb diameter which tapers down to our regular size at the ends. This tapered fit more closely mirrors the contours of a closed fist to offer maximum comfort and reduced rider fatigue. Because of it’s slightly larger diameter, this grip is also good for those with larger hands.
