Hello...

H EDITOR Ben Wilkins

Contributions: Kiwi Rider welcomes editorial contributions from its readers. If you would like to write something for

Yamaha employees did to two SR400s in just three weeks. Their stunning work, completed in such a short space of time is laid out for you on page 32. A bike that has truly stunned us this month is Kawasaki’s ZX-10R, which it claims is as close as you’ll get to a World Champion’s bike. It’s bonkers fast and extremely capable - are you up to it? See page 40 for more. Scott Columb managed to place an almost standard Kawasaki KX450F just one step away from the podium in the MX Nationals and secured highest placed privateer in the process. Turn to page 88 to see what it took to get there. Enjoy the mag.

ELLO... and welcome to the June issue of Kiwi Rider. April, which has been exceptionally good weather whenever we’ve been out riding, has seen the return of the BMW GS Rallye and it turned out to be the biggest adventure ride we’ve ever witnessed. Over 200 riders came to Raglan to take part in the event. Turn to page 24 for more on the spectacle. Speaking of adventure, we took along Triumph’s all-singing-and-dancing Tiger 800 XCa, which comes fitted with just about every accessory you could wish for gravel road touring and light adventure duties. It’s well spec’d and ready to roll. See more on page 50. Fans of modified bikes will love what three

traight out of the ‘you have to see this in the flesh’ file is news that Kawasaki’s 2016 version of the world’s fastest motorcycle is in the country. Red Baron Motorcycles in Auckland and New Plymouth Motorcycles have the $41,495 machines in store now. It is understood that Motorad in Wellington is getting one in the next shipment and AFC Motorcycles in Palmerston North have sold the only top of the line, carbon fibre, track only 300hp H2R. Dark always look better/different in the flesh but these bikes look something else again. You might have to show your money to hear the 130,000rpm supercharger singing away, but they’re worth a look if you are in the neighbourhood.

illy season is upon us much earlier than ever before. Jorge Lorenzo’s shift to Ducati for 2017 is the biggest news for a while on top riders moving camps, especially so early in the current season. With a bunch of MotoGP riders due to re-sign contracts at the end of this season, news of two year signings is limited at this point although both Valentino Rossi and Bradley Smith have recently announced two year contracts to the end of 2018 for Yamaha and KTM respectively.

but reformed Marquez again MotoGP title contender

Words: Michael Esdaile / Photos: Courtesy Yamaha Racing

T This is a radical departure from his previous winat-all-costs approach and will make him a formidable challenger

hat 2013 and 2014 MotoGP Champion Marc Marquez has learned from his hot-headed mistakes of last year was abundantly clear at round four of the 2016 MotoGP title chase at Jerez in southern Spain on April 24. While Valentino Rossi took the early lead with Jorge Lorenzo challenging him early on, Marquez sat in behind the two Movistar Yamahas biding his time. Then when Rossi started to draw away, with Lorenzo following, Marquez decided to settle for the 16 points that a third place finish would provide. It wasn’t as if he was just cruising around though. In an effort to make up for loss of rear tyre traction he pushed his Repsol Honda harder into the corners, almost lost the front a couple of times, then decided to settle for third. This is a radical departure from his previous win-at-all-costs approach and will make him a formidable challenger to current world champ Lorenzo’s (and Yamaha’s) 2016 title ambitions. In Argentina, Marquez won a shortened race after Race Direction decided on a pony-express with riders changing bikes mid-race after concerns over the ability

of the new Michelin control tyres being able to go full race distance. In this, Rossi stuck to Marquez like glue in the first half, which saw Lorenzo hit a damp patch and crash out. After the bike change, Marquez drew away to leave Rossi second. Then the Yamaha man was jumped by the Ducatis of Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone and pushed to fourth. But Iannone had a rush of blood to the head and decided to dive under his team-mate in the final corner with the chequered flag in sight. He lost the front, went down and took Dovizioso with him, handing Rossi a lucky second, with Dani Pedrosa, previously a distant fifth, also ending up on the podium. The win saw Marquez jump to the top of the table with 41 points, eight ahead of Rossi (33), with Pedrosa third (27) then Lorenzo (25) and Dovizioso (23) while Pol Espargaro was sixth on the Tech 3 Yamaha with 19 points. Round three in the USA saw Marquez dominate, starting from pole and running away with the race. Lorenzo settled into second spot after passing Dovizioso on lap five. By this time Rossi was out of it, having lost the front and crashing in a high speed corner – fortunately without injury. On the seventh lap Dani Pedrosa got

ooking around outside the pitlane garages at Sydney Motorsports Park during the 2016 Barry Sheene Festival of Speed was like peering into a portal of what was, for me at least, a golden era of motorcycle racing. The 1980s and 90s in world championship racing were a time of great transformation from amateur to professional racing. Even the top riders went from sleeping in their vans with their bikes to being driven in huge motorhomes or even flying from event to event. To mingle with your heroes and feel a part of the racing experience went from being as easy as just turning up and chatting with your heroes to having to actually be part of the championship with all the relevant accreditation, passes, tickets and badges to even get close. Racing had lost its innocence. In contrast, classic meetings like the Barry Sheene Festival of Speed give everyone the chance to get right in amongst the action. Like a dream, things were a little mixed up in Sydney. Sure you could rub shoulders and chat with the superstars but the era’s were a little blurred. Our own 80s hero Graeme Crosby was there. Crosby book-ended a couple of the American racers’ careers, beating Freddie Spencer to second in the World championship in 1982. Spencer then went on the following year to become the youngest ever World champion. Then a couple of years later Crosby popped

out of retirement to race at the Suzuka 8-Hour with a Texan kid by the name of Kevin Schwantz, who went on to win 25 GPs and the 2003 World championship. The two Americans rode bikes from their respective championship campaigns while Crosby was on a Kawasaki GP bike, along with Kork Ballington and John Boote. Kevin Magee was mixing it up in there with Chris Vermeulen. Jeremy McWilliams and Steve Parrish represented the Brits. It was a melting pot of some of the best eras of motorcycle racing. A ton of the iconic bikes were there too. Along with Schwantz’s and Spencer’s Grand Prix machines there were some very rare Kawasaki KR250, 350, 500 and even a KR750, which Australian legend Greg Hansford rode back in the day. The works Suzuki XR69 replicas looked the business too. As did the beautiful Wayne Rainey replica YZR500 Yamaha. Yamaha TZ750s were scattered about the field, including in our own pit with Damian Mackie going great guns before suffering a major ‘electrical problem’. The twenty-year-old me would have stood and gaped slack-jawed, but today I was working at getting out there on my bike and had stuff to do. In an early session, when I was finding my way around the bike and track, I spotted former multiple double champion Kork Ballington cruising up ahead. Tragically, my twenty-year-old subconscious piped up, telling me “Go on, pass him, so you can say… I passed Kork Ballington one time”. Of course, the KIWI RIDER

The 2016 BMW GS Rallye heralds the return of the big bike adventure ride.

I

t was definitely a dose of back to the future at the Kiwi Rider and BMW sponsored BMW GS Rallye at Raglan on April 16. Not since the heady days of the 1999 BMW Safari had there been, in my memory, a 200-plus attendance at an adventure ride in NZ. The G/S Rallye title was a nod to both the ‘gravel and seal’ nature of the route, and a celebration of the BMW G/S Gelande Strasse (offroad/road) bikes that have defined adventure travel since the model’s inception. Two routes were on offer, the 270km G/S route, being mainly gravel roads, and the 300km road route being exclusively tar seal. Our concept for the ride was that it would be squarely designed for big-block adventure bikes and easily ridden on road, or adventure tyres. With entries having to be locked out a week from the start, our small organising crew was flat out to prepare route sheets and set up the ride venue. Almost inevitably autumn rain and some lastminute land access issues added angst to plans hatched with local adventure enthusiast Alan Hall to include several easy adventure options into the G/S route. The riders assembled pre-Rallye on Friday evening at the Raglan Club to enjoy our loosely termed Bavarian barbeque, and to prepare route sheets for Saturday’s ride. This presented the first chance to get together socially, and with many old friends from BMW Safaris of the 80s and 90s getting back together after many years, plus the injection of many new faces, the night was soon off to a boisterous start. Ride day dawned warm and fine and those tackling the G/S route were off early, out of Raglan, around Mt Pirongia on the famously narrow and winding gravel Whanga Coast Road. An early farm option was recommended only for riders with off road experience and adventure tyres. It climbed high above Ruapuke Beach where the views over the Tasman Sea were stunning. This however was just the start of a full day of riding. The rest of the morning’s ride wound on past the Aotea and Raglan

The bikes that

Yamaha built Words: Ben Wilkins / Photos: Geoff Osborne

These two stunning SR400 specials, built mostly from the Yamaha parts bin, show what can be done to the humble SR400 in three weeks.

Y

amaha’s SR400 might seem like a humble, oldschool commuter machine that time seems to have forgotten. And, I guess, it is. But that’s at its face value. In Japan, the SR500 has been one of the most popular bikes for modifying – ever. In fact, it has a cult following the likes of which most manufacturers would pay vast sums of money to have. And so it is with the SR400. Maybe you’re wondering why a 400cc single cylinder commuter is so popular in the custom/modifying scene. Firstly, they’re classically styled, with that air-cooled single cylinder shape that everyone can recognise as a motorcycle. There’s no hiding a plain-looking water-cooled engine behind a fairing – this has cooling fins. Secondly, the SR400 is mechanically simple. You don’t need to plug a computer in to

diagnose anything. Thirdly... it has kick-start. There’s no electric start back up on this machine, you have to learn how to kick-start the bike before you can even ride it. Kick-starting a bike used to be a right of passage and, judging by the majority of attempts we saw, it’s definitely a skill that not many road-going motorcyclists have these days. Although the modifying scene is relatively small in New Zealand, there’s been a revival in the sales of simpler machines where riders want something they can work on themselves and tinker with the bike, change parts to make it more personal – harking back to the cafe racer scene from the 60s and 70s. So, when Yamaha announced a year or two ago that it was to bring the SR400 into NZ, there was a core of Yamaha employees who got pretty hot under the collar about it and couldn’t wait to get their hands on one.

THE CONCEPTS

A plan was hatched to build some modified SR400s to show potential purchasers the kinds of things that could be done to the plain-looking commuter machine. As you can see, both bikes on these pages look stunning and are the kinds of results most bike modifiers and builders would dream of building in their workshops. The plan that was hatched to build these bikes was tight. Very tight. Three weeks tight. Both bikes were to be built in three weeks, with just three guys working on them. Enter Phil Winter, Greg Jacobs and Dave Cole. They were tasked with dreaming up the bikes and then building them. Phil tells the story: “There’s not a huge customising scene here – so this was to show people what could be done without a huge budget. Greg was keen on a cafe racer, while I really like the

flat track and yesteryear dirt bike style. It just snowballed from there. The scrambler concept came from the old DT400s and DT175s because they tied in nicely with the history and heritage of Yamaha. “I have lots of old Yamaha brochures, so we went through them, photocopied pages, cut parts out and stuck them together like a collage to make bikes we liked the look of. I’d already been planning to build my own bike like this, so had a few ideas in my head and drew some inspiration from the brochures and other bikes I found on the web. “One of our main requirements was to keep the standard fuel tanks and to not modify the front mounting brackets. That way it’d keep costs down, but it’d also show you don’t need to spend lots of money. All we did to the tanks was to raise or lower them a little to change the shape of the bike and get them KIWI RIDER

et me just start by saying that the 2016 Kawasaki ZX-10R is unbelievably, totally, utterly mind-blowing, stunning and scarily fast. I could wrap up the test right there really, job done... although the Ed might suggest that’d be less than ideal. At the forefront of WSB racing for many years and taking both the rider and manufacturer titles last year, the ZX-10R has been the machine to beat. Judging by the results of Team Green in WSB this year so far, it’s still the machine to beat. But while this machine is very obviously built to win races, it is also a road bike and should be judged from that perspective too. And let’s make no mistake, the 2016 ZX-10R is an amazing road bike, but just as a cruiser is polarising and suits only some riders, the ZX is equally niche, but at the extreme other end of the spectrum. To actually see how fast this bike will accelerate on the public roads is nigh on impossible. Perhaps a deserted motorway in the middle of the night is an option if you’re happy to take the chance that you might be saying “bye-bye” to your license. Even to feel what the engine is like at the 14,000rpm cut-out in the first of the gearbox’s six gears takes you way into instant loss-of-your-license territory. Hit the speed shifter (up shift only) for second gear in the business end of the rev range sees you over 200km/h and the front wheel is a whisker from the road for the duration... So you can start to see the issues here

with there still being another four gears to go! I never wanted to found out just exactly how quick it would go. What I will say, though, is that it is truly minddisturbingly and violently fast in the upper rev range of the lower few gears. The only way to accurately and sensibly explore the power limits on this bike is at a track day, preferably a wide-open track with long straights at that. If you never rode the ZX-10R above 6000rpm you would still be making damned quick progress towards the horizon. Having said all that, the Kawasaki in-line four-cylinder DOHC 998cc beast is remarkably easy and predictable to ride in the lower half of the rev range. The fuelling is near-perfect; it purrs along behind traffic and around town. The delivery of the power is very torquey and seamless with a progressive snowballing of relentless thrust. As the revs rise, the thrust keeps building and building until the bike is hurtling forwards at a truly ferocious rate. However... I have to say that a relative novice (and I don’t mean learner) could easily ride it and not get in to trouble with sensible use of the throttle. There are three power modes; F for Full power, M for Middle which allows 80% of full power and L for Low allowing 60%. Backing up this incredible motorcycle is an astounding array of electronic acronyms that not only make the bike faster, but easier and safer to ride too. KIBS means Kawasaki Intelligent antilock Brake System, commonly called ABS. KLCM stands for Kawasaki Launch Control Mode and S-KTRC stands for

he Triumph Tiger 800 XCa is the British manufacturer’s flagship 800cc adventure bike. It comes with all the necessities and accessories (bells and whistles) any true all-year-round adventure warrior might want. There’s top-quality WP suspension at both the front and rear along with tough alloy panniers and frames, but that’s just the start. On top of that the XCa purchaser gets crash protection, a centrestand (something of a novelty these days), riding lights, handguards, heated front and rear seat sections and heated hand grips. Then there’s cruise control (which I don’t think an adventure bike needs) and proper, decently-sized off-road-style footpegs. Yes, this machine is the duck’s nuts, a ready to go Triumph adventure bike. I was going to question the necessity of the heated seats and then realised I like them in my car even for the mild Auckland winters... A few years ago while riding down to the Pukemanu adventure ride in the dark, with torrential rain forming a puddle of cold water around my crotch and water streaming from my wrists, the heated seats, grips and driving lights would have been more than pleasant. The Tiger’s engine is a great performer, even if it does make an odd (and slightly annoying) whirring sound. At a full 800cc, the DOHC in-line, six-speed triple is quite fast and pulls hard particularly at high revs. The peak power figure of 95hp/70kW is made at a high 9250rpm, while the 79Nm peak torque is reached reasonably high in the rev range too (7850rpm) for a bike of this style. Fortunately the power delivery is very flexible and decently torquey considering the above numbers and I found it extremely easy to use. It is happy in stop-start traffic around town and just fine on gravel too. While the Tiger XCa is well suited to our tight and twisty back-roads, it is not quite so

Fitted with all the bells and whistles it’s possible for an adventure bike to come with, Triumph’s rangetopping Tiger 800 XCa offers a bike that’s ready to go straight from the showroom floor. happy in tough, slow adventure-riding where it is a little inclined to stall and a whisker revvy in nature. However, I think few riders will take the XCa into those kinds of serious adventure conditions. I’m inclined to think gravel roads and gentle trails are the typical Tiger owner’s adventure stomping grounds. The rider has the choice of three power modes. They are Road, Off-road and Rider configurable (which means you can alter the engine characteristics to suit yourself to some degree). But, the system for making changes to the power configuration is not particularly intuitive at all – to me at least. The chassis is a tubular steel trellis item with double sided aluminium swingarm. The steering head angle is a quick 24.3 degrees which makes for a supremely agile road bike where they are mostly ridden. However this does

lead to a twitchy front-end when riding on slippery dirt tracks and sand with the standard road tyres. Really though, this is a 203 kg dry weight bike with a tall 840-860mm seat height, so decent tyres are a must off-road. On road the 90/90 21” front and 150/70 17” rear Bridgestone tyres are excellent and deliver secure grip. The Tiger has a slightly nose heavy, yet planted feel on the road with the suspension doing a great job of relaying confidence back to the rider. The WP USD 43mm separate function forks are adjustable for compression and rebound via a triangle shaped knob at the top of each leg and have 220mm of travel. In action the fork worked very well on the road and is noticeably more controlled in all conditions than the base model unit. Out back the WP shock is an older school remote reservoir item

Allan Nieper (third from right) with half of the 20 strong Nationwide Accessories team outside the company’s premises in King Street, Hamilton

1981-2016 Thirty five years and stronger than ever.

F

resh back from a major trade show in Taiwan where he and partner Diana Schroder were given the VIP treatment by many of the manufacturers Nationwide Accessories represents in New Zealand, Allan Nieper looked surprisingly fresh and alert. Sitting in his office, the nerve centre of Nationwide Accessories, Nieper was keeping tabs on his operation while he spoke to Kiwi Rider about the background to what is one of New Zealand’s major motorcycle wholesalers. The genesis of what has become Nationwide Accessories was probably laid in 1973 when Nieper created a catalogue of parts and accessories for Percy Coleman Wholesale. At that stage he had been with the Wanganui-based company for six years as the sole sales representative, calling on motorcycle dealers up and down the country. Over time he realised the dealers had no idea the extent of the product range the company represented – so he took it upon himself to produce a catalogue. Working entirely in his spare time, at nights and weekends, Nieper photographed products, wrote the text, then cut and pasted them the traditional way into pages and pages of products. He recalls having these pages on the floor in his lounge and down the hallway as he reorganised the order. When he was happy, he had the Wanganui Chronicle print the catalogue. It wasn’t long before Coleman’s turnover in parts and accessories doubled. After nine years as Coleman’s national sales representative, Nieper moved to Hamilton and for five years ran the

Coleman’s Suzuki Centre. So he had a great grounding in the wholesale side of the motorcycle trade as well as a solid understanding of the retail side of things when he branched out on his own, forming his own company, Centrepoint Accessories Wholesale Ltd. on May 1, 1981, using the garage at his Hamilton home. Not long after he changed the company name to Nationwide Accessories Wholesale Ltd. And despite import restrictions and the company’s lack of import licences, the business expanded to the stage it had to move to premises in Somerset Street in Hamilton. One of the first major tasks the company faced to was to deal with Customs with import license applications, but his years at Colemans had given Nieper experience in this side of things. He recalls going through a lengthy process to apply for parts and accessories, as well as clothing, boots, and helmet import licenses, only to be knocked back by Customs because they considered there were enough people with import licenses to be able to satisfy the market. This was a serious setback as most of the goods Nationwide wanted were from overseas. So the company had to settle for dealing with local manufacturers of helmets, boots, gloves and leather jackets to be able to offer a wide enough range of products to satisfy demand. Neiper had a good working knowledge of all the local manufacturers as a result of dealing with them in this previous employment so Nationwide quickly became the largest supplier of New Zealand-made products to the motorcycle dealers. For the first two years in particular, things weren’t easy as the entrenched importers controlled most of the best product

Win some and lose some at Junior Nationals

S

port can be cruel sometimes, but the 2016 New Zealand Junior Motocross Championships weren’t the first time that a rider has won the most races but not won the title, and it probably won’t be the last time either. If motocross fans can think back to 2007 and the glorious run that New Zealand’s Josh Coppins had been enjoying in the Motocross World Championships in Europe – he was 107 points in front with just five GPs to go – and, with two GPs up his sleeve, it seemed a sure thing he’d go on to win his first world title. To cut a long story short, Yamaha’s Coppins crashed at round 11 in the Czech Republic and was unable to push ahead and win the title that year. Instead it was Belgium’s Steve Ramon, with just two moto wins to his credit all season (out of a total of 30 in the 15 GPs), who took the title that year. A similar story emerged from this season’s junior nationals in Hawke’s Bay (and is it therefore also perhaps ironic that the event was sponsored by the race team Coppins now runs, Altherm JCR Yamaha?). It was a Yamaha rider too, Taupo’s Wyatt Chase, who dominated both the two premier classes at the Fernhill circuit over the three days of the Anzac Weekend – the 14-16 years’ 250cc class and the 15-16 years’ 125cc division as well. Early on he had looked to be the most dominant rider of the weekend across all the categories, with four wins in a row in the 14-16 years’ 250cc class and four consecutive wins also the 15-16 years’ 125cc class. But luck played a huge part on the third and final day of racing, handing the 250cc title instead to Ohaupo’s Trent Collins (Honda). Chase won 12 of 14 races over the three days – winning five of the seven races in the 250cc class – but his one no-points race, when he fried the clutch on his bike and did not finish, proved extremely costly and he had to give up the 250cc championship to Collins, who proved that consistency counts most when he won just one race but finished runner-up on six occasions and was able to take the title by 12 points from the luckless Chase. “When I inherited the 250cc championship lead after Wyatt Chase had problems and didn’t finish that one race, I knew all I had to do was ride sensibly and I’d win the title,” said Collins. “Second 68

or third in the final two races was easily enough for me to take the title. “I finished first equal in this class last year, although runner-up on count-back, so I’m naturally thrilled to win this year. However, I would rather have won it by beating Wyatt properly on the track. “Consistency counts in this sport and luck sometimes plays a part too. I have also lost titles in this way in the past, so I do feel for Wyatt. I know what it’s like.” Meanwhile, Chase was unbeatable in the 15-16 years’ 125cc class, winning all seven races, and taking the title by a convincing 25 points from Mangakino’s Maximus Purvis. Te Puke’s Tyler Steiner was another stand-out performer at the weekend, finishing third overall, behind Chase and Purvis, in the 15-16 years’ 125cc class and also taking the third podium spot, behind Collins and Chase, in the 250cc class. But the cruel twist of fate in the 250cc class was perhaps the main talking point. “It’s pretty unbelievable that I didn’t manage to win both classes after dominating so much, but that’s racing sometimes,” said the 16-year-old Chase. “I can’t complain and it was still a good way to finish my last season as a junior racer.” He now heads overseas to tackle the last four rounds of the European 125 Motocross (EMX125) championships, starting in England, and will then return in August to make his senior debut in New Zealand at the big annual MX Fest in Taupo in October. Other classes winners at the junior nationals were Dunedin’s Grason Veitch (KTM, 12-14 years 125cc class); Oparau’s James Scott (Husqvarna, 13-16 years 85cc class); Matamata’s Brodie Connolly (KTM, 11-12 years 85cc class) and Tokanui’s Mitchell Weir (Yamaha, 8-10 years 85cc class).

Groombridge wraps up title with a round to spare

W

ith three wins from three starts, the 2016 New Zealand Cross-country Championships have been locked up by Bay of Plenty’s Brad Groombridge with a round to spare. The Taupo locksmith won the third round of four in the 2016 nationals, held in Taranaki, about 20 kilometres east of Eltham, in April and that was enough for him to put the senior championship trophy in the safe and throw away the key. The Suzuki ace had also won the earlier rounds one and two, near Huntly and near Mosgiel respectively, and, with only three of the four rounds to be counted, as riders discard their one worst result, the 25-yearold Groombridge put himself well out of strike range of his rivals. But it was actually not as easy as Groombridge made it look – if Mokau’s record four-time former national champion Adrian Smith or Howick’s Liam Draper had won in Taranaki and then gone on to also win the final near Nelson in May, it would have been an entirely different outcome and Smith would have collected his fifth national cross-country title or Draper celebrated his first. And, when Yamaha’s Smith snatched the lead at the start of the gruelling three-hour marathon in Taranaki, it seemed that might have been possible. But there was no stopping Groombridge, the Suzuki hero taking over the lead from

Three winners from three brands in three rounds Words & photos: Andy McGechan

P

erhaps the New Zealand Enduro Championships this year are brought to you by the number three. With three rounds completed and three different riders and three different bike brands celebrating wins, the 2016 New Zealand Enduro Championships are bubbling with excitement and intrigue, the likes of which hasn’t been seen in the sport for many years. Defending champion Chris Birch has been a surprise no-show during the opening phase of the nationals this season and so, instead of the man from Glen Eden dominating proceedings as he has over the past three consecutive seasons, it has been left to others to step into the spotlight. But the intrigue doesn’t start or end there... while traditional leading riders such as Callan May, Adrian Smith, Paul Whibley, Jason Davis and Jake Whitaker might have been expected to fill the void, the surprises continued to stack up with three first-time winners revealing themselves instead. Christchurch’s Hamish Macdonald (Sherco) won round one in the Greta Valley, near Christchurch, over the Easter Weekend, while Taupo’s Brad Groombridge (Suzuki) won round two at Mosgiel a couple of days later, but now we have a third first-time winner in the competition, with Howick’s Liam Draper (Husqvarna) winning the third round of five in the series at Moonshine, near Upper Hutt, in April. The 19-year-old Draper, an apprentice plumber from Howick and Kiwi Rider test-rider, has tasted motorcycling success on many occasions, his teaming up with fellow Husqvarna rider Hadleigh Knight, from Reporoa, to win the big annual Acerbis Four-Hour cross-country marathon near Taupo last October being one such example of that, but it was a real breakthrough moment at Moonshine when he won as an individual at the ultimate level of the sport of enduro racing. Draper won all of the five tightly-timed “special stages” at Moonshine and he KIWI RIDER

28/04/16 3:05 PM experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US.... REVOLUTIONARY BMW

wenty-seven years ago BMW had a solid reputation for building efficient and reliable motorcycles, usually touring and sportstouring models, which some considered conservative by nature. Few expected the bomb-shell that was revealed at the 1988 Cologne International Motorcycle Show. At the end of a decade that had produced the Honda CB1100R, the Suzuki Katana and GSX-R750, and the Kawasaki GPZ900R in Japan, from Germany came the BMW K1, which stunned the booming sports-bike market. Not only did the bike look like nothing that had gone before, what was beneath the eye-catching aero-dynamic bodywork was just as surprising. The engine was a 16-valve in-line four, 987cc, with maximum power of 100bhp at 8000rpm. The five-speed gearbox fed a shaft final drive. Straight line top speed was 225km/h. Although a drive shaft is said to affect handling and un-sprung weight, the use of a Paralever system at the rear did much to correct this problem. The fuel injection system was updated and the anti-lock braking system came from the K100RS. Apart from the attention to technical refinements, BMW had set out to make an aerodynamically satisfying

machine like no other. Many hours were no doubt spent in the company’s wind tunnel. The front mudguard was a serious attempt to correct what has been one of the most perplexing design problems on a motorcycle, the front wheel. Remember the attempts by manufacturers to solve this problem with the ‘dust-bin’ fairings on race bikes? They were eventually banned for safety reasons. The rest of the bodywork was stylish, if not strikingly different from the norm. Critics said that, at 259kg, the K1 was too heavy to be a serious sports bike contender, but if compared with a Honda CB1100, which was essentially built as a race bike, statistics are surprising. On weight, yes the Honda (235kg) is 24kg lighter, but the top speed is 229km/h, only 4km/h faster than the BMW. Let’s look at other 1100s of the 80s; Suzuki’s GSX weighed 252kg with a top speed of 220km/h, Kawasaki’s GPZ weighed 255kg with a top speed of 225km/h, and the Suzuki Katana 247kg and 225km/h. So there’s wasn’t much in it. Sure, the K1 is unlikely to shine on the race track, but its bodywork may make for up for the extra weight, and provide greater stability when it comes to high speed touring over long distances. After the initial launch as a sports touring machine it seems the factory accepted the fact that it was a
