KIWI RIDER

elcome to the March issue of Kiwi Rider. New Zealand is a country seen as something of an adventure playground by the rest of the world. Visitors come in their millions from the far reaches of the globe to partake in adventurous activities such as cycling, skydiving, rafting, skiing and, more pertinent to us, ride motorcycles. We’ve got some of the most scenic roads and countryside… anywhere. And we’ve got the fifth longest beach in the world – 90-Mile Beach. Despite the actual length not quite matching the name, it seemed like the perfect place to take Suzuki’s new-for-2015 DR200S. The little fifth-of-a-pint trail bike might not seem like much of a long-distance adventurer but we came away pretty impressed. Turn to page 50 for more on the DR200S and its bigger brother, our long term DR650SE. Talking of adventure, everyone I’ve spoken to seems to have a different understanding of the term

‘adventure riding’. The term appears to encompass a lot of different riding – and different types and styles of bike. Ex-editor, and ‘adventure riding’ supremo, John Nick explains the various kinds of riding that makes up the genre and also casts an eye over the suitable machinery from enduro bikes to 1000cc-plus ‘adventure tourers’. See page 60 for more. BMW’s K1600GT is firmly in the on-road camp and is every bit as Gran Tourismo as its name might suggest. The six cylinder motor is a beauty of a thing with big, creamy power and a wonderful exhaust note. Want to get somewhere fast and in comfort, with plenty in hand? Turn to page 38. In the KR stable we’ve got two long term dirt bikes at the moment; Suzuki’s RM-Z450 ‘crosser and KTM’s 250 EXC-F enduro. Head to the Roost Zone on page 73 for more. Enjoy the mag. BEN WILKINS

VIETNAM ADVENTURES

W

ith a bustling and vibrant culture, delicious food, friendly locals, good shopping opportunities, and magnificent scenery it is no wonder that Vietnam has become an increasingly popular travel destination for Kiwis. Mike and Angela, of Britton Adventures, reckon that travelling by motorcycle is the best way to experience Vietnam. Riding a motorbike gives you the ability to stop for photos, see what’s happening on the side of the road, or soak in the scenery, whenever you choose. Unlike a bus or van tour where stops are scheduled and spontaneous photos have to be taken through a pane of glass. “Often our customers will stop because they want to take a closer look at some strange piece of machinery, or perhaps go and have a close-up look at the rice being harvested, or something else going on that interests them,” explains Angela. “When you’re riding a bike you can do this. We run our tours in a way that allows each customer to seek out what it is that may interest them. The road speeds are generally not very fast, and riding a motorcycle provides you with a panoramic view of local folk going about their daily business.” Mike and Angela first travelled to Vietnam in 1997, and have been organising tours there since 2004. The three-week Hilltribes, Northeast and the Ho Chi Minh Trail Tour gives a broad

look at Vietnam. It incorporates a Northeastern loop from Hanoi which, in Mike and Angela’s opinion, features the best motorcycling terrain in Vietnam. “The North East region has amazing roads that weave among majestic limestone mountain outcrops, and up and down valleys planted with the northern staple of maize, and both wet and dry rice,” Angela explains “Ethnic hilltribe minorities are in full view as they go about their daily life, planting and harvesting the rice and maize - and all this can be viewed from the seat of your motorbike.” After the northern segment, the tour loops back to Hanoi and then continues down segments of the former Ho Chi Minh Trail through regions of Vietnam where some of the heaviest battles took place during the Vietnam/ American conflict. Visiting the heavily bombed Dong Loc Junction and the ex-marine firebase in Khe San (now a museum) gives those with an interest in war history a chance to see firsthand the devastation Vietnam suffered. It also demonstrates how resilient the Vietnamese were in their resistance, and Mike notes that many a customer has been known to say after viewing the war photos and information, “the Americans were never going to win that war.” While the tour does not include an overnight stay in World Heritage site Halong Bay, Mike and Angela are happy to arrange this as an

optional ‘add-on’. They reckon that Halong Bay is well worth the look and it is a great introduction to travelling in Vietnam. Imagine getting up each morning and riding through some of the most spectacular limestone mountains in the northeast of Vietnam, or cruising alongside rice paddies on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in central Vietnam, or navigating the bustling streets of some of Vietnam’s vibrant cities. There is no need for you to worry which direction to take, where you are going to sleep that night, and what you are going to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – Britton Adventures do that for you. Their tours have no hidden costs, most expenses are covered in the tour price and they say from the onset what is not covered (primarily visas, insurance, alcohol and a handful of meals). If you would like more information email angela@adventurerides.co.nz or call Angela 021 2552806 or Mike 021 2849047.

HONDA KIDS CAMPS

A

uckland Easter Weekend: What better way to show your kids there is a real world out there beyond Playstation and XBox than getting them out on the trails? With a number of tracks to suit every grade of rider, Honda’s Kids Camps mean you literally stumble out of your sleeping bag and after a quick bite to eat, hit the trails. It’s a great way to improve your riding and fantastic for family relations. A number of this year’s camps have already been run with a huge bunch of youngsters enjoying themselves. However, there’s still one last chance for city folk to get out amongst it. It’s five years since Woodhill Forest (just outside) of Auckland, played host to one of Honda’s fantastic Kids Camps and with the event limited to 250 people for the Easter weekend event this year, the ‘townies’ will have to be in quick. A little over an hour from downtown Auckland, the Honda Kids Camp provide the location, amenities (including hot showers and toilets) and the trails. Get your family and bikes along for a prime New Zealand experience. You can also let your kids try a bike from the Honda range. It’s recommended that you book ahead (up until 27 March) by emailing grant.w@cyclespot.co.nz to ensure a slot. For more info see www.poweradventures.co.nz

On the Thursday (March 5) before the weekend’s races, the shops will all being staying open late until 8pm. As well as

hosting riders and bikes from the championship, the stores will be dishing out free tickets to the races, having BBQs and putting a bunch of gear on sale. There is also to be a dyno shootout with prize for the most powerful bike on the night. So head down to Barrys Point Road in Takapuna and be a part of the fun.

HOW GOOD IS CASEY STONER?

I

t’s all very well being a great rider but being paed for your services two years after you have retired, means you must still have something pretty special indeed. The top guys in MotoGP are the best and are continually sharpening their skills during the race year. Stoner meanwhile has barely ridden in that time. Yet HRC Excutive Vice President Shuhei Nakamoto recently said recently, when confirming Stoners ongoing work for HRC, “The feedback he gives HRC is invaluable and we are fortunate to have a test rider capable to push the RC213V to its limits”. Ad man Todd Sutherland will be patiently waiting by the phone for HRC’s call…

BMW NATIONAL RALLY

W

ith dry hot weather the ‘dirty’ boy’s Beemers got pretty dusty on the back roads into the ranges around Wanganui at the annual BMW Owners Register Rally based at the Top 10 Holiday Park over the weekend of Jan 23-25. An entry of eighty-five with sixty machines from all over the country had two ride options per day with the road riders taking the sealed scenic route to Hunterville via Bruce Ardel’s Museum at Fordell on the Saturday, while the next day their journey took them up the Whanganui River Road to Ohakune and back over Fields Track. The adventure bikes had an adventure up to Papaiti and back out to Kai Iwi, while on Sunday they had a very technical ride at times up the Turakina Valley to Taihape with the first

stop at the 75km mark. The furthest travelled rider was from Victoria Australia while the oldest machine a 1982 R50 from Picton. Co-ordinator Lance Nixon said the dinner by Mike and John at Infusion was superb and the demo bikes from BMW NZ and Motomart on the Saturday added that something extra for rally entrants.

O

n a recent visit to Cyclespot Honda, we got talking to parts man Lyn Davis. You might remember Lyn bought a NC700 Honda commuter early last year when he found that he could pay the bike off with the savings he would make in his fuel bill. We all know the fuel equation has changed with the deflation in fuel prices. Lyn however can’t get enough of the NC700. He reckons it’s great. He’s able to slip his helmet where the fuel tank goes on most bikes, undercover and secure, and then take shopping home in the same ‘under tank’ storage. All this and he recently claimed a run of 390km on 14 litres of fuel (that’s 3.59l/100km or 27.9km/l). Lyn customised his bike a little recently; opting for a wider set of handlebars, a slip on Yoshi pipe and claims the change to T30 Bridgestones has made it a much better bike. It just goes to show it doesn’t have to be a rocket to pique a rider’s enjoyment. Tell us about your bike. What simple changes have you made? HONDA CB450 BLACK BOMBER

I

n the last issue we dealt with the Hondas that’ve featured in this column during the past eight years. I think it’s fair to say that we covered most of the ground breaking models, with one very important exception, the CB450; nicknamed ‘The Black Bomber’, because of its standard black and chrome finish. There are several reasons why enthusiasts and historians tend to overlook this model. The main one being what was expected of it and didn’t occur. The CB450 was to be Honda’s entry into the big bike market, and the first serious challenge to Norton, Triumph, and Harley-Davidson, but it didn’t quite happen that way. It was high-tech, well designed, and inexpensive. It was the most innovative motorcycle of the time; a double overhead camshaft, four-valve parallel twin, producing 44bhp at 8500rpm. Weight was 187kg with a top speed of 167km/h. But the lucrative American motorcycle market, where the battle for big

bike supremacy would be fought, wasn’t enthusiastic. The fact that motorcycle sales were slowing in that market contributed to this, but it wasn’t the only factor. One reason could have been that the mid-1960s were the years of almost total Honda domination on Grand Prix race tracks, and so much effort and resource were invested in the development of the race bikes that production machinery didn’t get the same attention. The CB450 was launched in 1965, a year before Honda took out three of the five World Championships. The race bikes were the most exotic ever seen; six-cylinder 250s, five-cylinder 125s, and fourcylinder 350 and 500s. So when the latest, and first foray into the big bike market by Honda, produced a parallel twin, some said ‘so where’s all this exotic race track technology’. To be fair to Honda on this count, there was a lot of race track

Kawasaki 300 Ninja ABS Special Edition

I wish these bikes were around when I was a learner

24

he excitement was palpable. Beks was positively beaming after a couple of hours nipping around the back roads north of KR HQ on Kawasaki’s newest 300 Ninja. “It’s great. I wish these bikes were around when I was a learner. It goes really well, it’s nice and light so it can easily nip in and out of corners and I can get my feet down when I stop. Not only that, when it comes to pushing it around, I feel confident because it is light and easy to manoeuvre. But best of all, it looks really sporty.” This was the view of the Editor’s recently arrived friend from England. She explained that when she completed her learner training (yes, they train learners in England), she was able to ride a Honda CBR600F. While she loved its ergonomics and sporty performance, she found it a challenge every time she stopped. “I had to think about where I parked it. It had to be nose out from the curb because pulling the 600 backwards up the camber of the road was a struggle. I had no worries about that with the 300 Ninja.” Summing up, it’s the sporty looks, low seat and ease of manoeuvring that wins over prospective buyers before the 300 Ninja even leaves the showroom. Once they are out on the road, the rest of the package delivers the goods. And it is not only entry level riders who enjoy the 300 Ninja. The KR staff has ridden lots of high power bikes over the years but the 300 Ninja has a charm all its own. From an almost pedestrian off-beat waffle, the well muffled noise from the parallel twin cylinder engine’s exhaust changes markedly as the tacho needle winds around the dial and kisses the red zone at 13,000rpm. At this point what you thought was a commuter bike is making the sort of sound you’d expect from a Superbike as the Kawasaki accelerates, momentarily let off its leash. There is enough torque at idle to move off from a standstill with the throttle closed. But give it some revs, slip the clutch and it’s off. From around 3000rpm it is pulling decently, wakes up just past 5000rpm then screams all the way to the redline. This is a great engine.

If you find a nice quiet back road, the 300 Ninja will reward you with its free-revving nature and nimble yet stable handling. At the same time it will slip along through the suburbs without attracting undue attention but will always be ready for the next bit of sport. The power spread is generous. You can ride at 50km/h in sixth with the engine ticking over at just 3400. Leave it in top and accelerate to 100, where the motor is spinning at just under 7000rpm, and there’s still another 6000rpm to the redline. In addition to its 296cc displacement, the Ninja 300 engine features a low-friction cam chain for maximum power and efficiency, moderate 10.6:1 compression ratio that allows the use of 91 octane petrol, and lightweight pistons featuring a hard anodised coating for low-friction and maximum performance at all rpm. Those high-tech pistons are cooled by a crankcase design that directs a spray of cooling oil across their bottom surfaces. Lightweight gudgeon pins help reduce reciprocating weight without sacrificing an impressively high redline, and the sleeveless ‘open-deck’ die-cast aluminum cylinders feature a friction-reducing ‘T-treatment’ plating for maximum durability. A large-volume sump holds 2.4 litres of oil, has cooling fins to help keep operating temperatures in check, but is shaped to allow maximum ground clearance while an easy-toaccess cartridge type spin-on oil filter helps simplify maintenance. Its six-speed sequential transmission features Kawasaki’s positive neutral finder to make finding neutral really easy when stopped. As Beks discovered, getting on the 300 Ninja is very easy as the seat is a low-ish 785mm. What is more, it is perfectly shaped, tapering in to the fuel tank which makes it even easier to get your feet down at a stop. The footrests are below the front of the seat and well tucked in. Unlike too many full-sized sports bikes, the handlebars are mounted above the top fork clamp so there’s none of that head-down, bum-up nonsense. Those of small to medium stature will find it fits like a

Larger capacity sportbikes require a very serious approach. But with the 300 Ninja you get a light, lively great handling package that just loves carving corners, and you don’t need to take out a second mortgage to buy one, nor plan ahead to 2016 before snapping the throttle wide open‌ KIWI RIDER

here are many reasons to purchase Aprilia’s RSV-4R. However, tootling around town is not one of them. Like buying a Ferrari, this Aprilia puts you into a select group of owners who want to be part of the highest echelons of Italian performance. Riding in the city on the RSV-4 causes heads to turn, people to stare, kids to wave and grown men to drool – ok, so maybe not the last one… but clearly the RSV-4 looks and sounds the part. But how does it ride? I’m not going to tell you what this bike is like on a racetrack, as its pedigree of three World

Super Bike titles tells you most of what you need to know. No, for the purpose of this test I’m interested in whether you can ride it beyond the closed road surfaces of a track.

THE NOT SO GOOD Firstly, let’s get the complaints out of the way. The mirrors, typical of most modern sports machines, offer an almost a perfect view of your arms rather than what is behind you. There is some exposed wiring around the headlights that is a little less neat than with other manufacturers. Finally, around town

the bike warms up to slightly uncomfortable temperatures pretty quickly, as it is really designed to be moving than in stop-start traffic.

NOW FOR THE AWESOME The engine is fast. Very fast. This model might not be class-leading in the 1000cc sports bike class, but what really sets it apart is the absolutely beautiful exhaust note and the buttery smooth torque once you get into the revs. The RSV-4 features the liquid-cooled 999.6cc, 16-valve, 65° vee-four motor as found in the higher spec Factory model.

Can a technology-laden 185hp motorcycle actually make sense on our speed limited open roads? The short answer is yes. But like most things in life, nothing is as simple as it first may seem.

30

KIWI RIDER

The claimed output is around 180hp, which is more than enough for winding your way along the back roads from Pukekohe to Raglan. The vee-four produces so much torque that it is almost redundant which gear is selected as you will arrive at the next corner at a rapid pace regardless. But if you do choose to select one that sees the tacho needle climb high into the rev range, there is a friendly little red light that flashes to tell you it’s about time

you hooked another gear. To assist you in changing up a gear Aprilia has added a quickshifter to cut the power momentarily, meaning the clutch is not necessary on the upshift, as part of the electric additions.

ELECTRICKERY To help keep you in control the engineers at Aprilia have added their aPRC system which features traction control, anti-wheelie control,

launch control as well as race ABS. There are three modes, Road, Sport and Track and a range of levels within each mode. As part of the brief, KR’s Ed was especially keen to instruct me to try out the technology. I can assure you that the only way on the road that I could find to test the traction control was to gas it up while leant over on a wet corner. Trusting technology to keep you in control of a 180hp motorcycle that costs the better part

dventure. It’s heady stuff. The dreaming and planning of a trip to somewhere new is one of the most fun ways to while away an evening or weekend… so when Suzuki’s new-for-2015 DR200S turned up at the office we were more than ready to let ourselves daydream a little. Picture this… there’s a brand-spanking new DR200S and a long term DR650SE test bike sitting in the lockup, there are no mileage limits and you’ve got a ‘do whatever you like with them’ edict from the head honcho at Suzuki. The trouble is you’ve ‘only’ got a three day weekend to get some kilometres under the wheels before the publisher says you’ve got to be back at your desk. Now, the great thing about New Zealand is that motorcycles are allowed on some beaches. In the UK it’s difficult enough to take a dog on a beach, let alone a motor vehicle, so having the world’s fifth longest beach (90-Mile Beach) within striking distance of KR Towers made for the beginnings of an adventure. I’ve done plenty of miles on our DR650 and know it to be an economical, reliable and trusty steed for any weekend away. So, it was a known quantity when loading it up with camera gear and clothes for our trip to ride 90-Mile Beach. The DR200S however was another matter. Yes, the DR200 engine has been around in various guises for donkey’s years but a) they tend to mostly be used as farm bikes (DR200 Trojan) and b)

50

KIWI RIDER

the 2015 machine is not-so-subtly different to the one loved by many Kiwis. For 2015 the DR has been given a fresh set of clothes to make it a far more visually attractive motorcycle. Publisher Vege has a much-loved DR200 Djebel but it definitely looks like it’s from a bygone era. The new machine looks far more modern and even apes the company’s RM-Z motocross weaponry a little. It also benefits from a new digital electronic ignition yet still retains the simplicity of a CV carburettor. Unfortunately for us, the 200S does away with the, admittedly handy, rear rack so the only option was to bungee luggage to the seat and top of the rear mudguard. Looking much less like a farm implement than recently preceding models, the DR200S needed a rider for the trip. Enter Rebekah ‘Beks’ Ellis, a friend of the magazine who’s spending six months travelling around New Zealand. She’s not ridden for a few years after selling her Honda CBR600F and was nervous at the idea of riding a trail bike. But setting eyes on the baby DR, she was smitten with the bike’s looks and more than happy with the 126kg fully-fuelled weight – almost 40kg lighter than the DR650 I was to be piloting. Luggage strapped firmly into place we struck out for Ahipara along the wild, west coast from Auckland to take in the Waipoua Forest and the sand dunes opposite Omapere. Cruising at 80km/h initially, to give the DR200 a chance to get a few more kilometres on the clock, it was easy

BIG ADVENTURE small capacity,

New Zealand is blessed with the fifth longest beach in the world. And being a public highway, it seemed a perfect place to take our long term DR650 and the new DR200S for a mini-adventure.

to notice that the DR650 wasn’t quite happy in fifth so I spent most of the time on uphill gradients in fourth and downhills in fifth. Just another 10km/h and the 650 was more than happy to cruise in top gear. The DR200 on the other hand was happily in top gear and barely touching its 12.5 litre fuel load. The first fill up showed it to be sipping fuel at a rate of just over 32km/l. The larger capacity machine only managing 21km/l – but it had been used for a few ‘enthusiastic’ kilometres before the trip started. Pulling into Rawene to catch the ferry was the first time we’d had time for a chat about the bikes. Beks was most impressed with the 200’s cornering ability with the trail tyres and re-iterated how little the bike weighed – and how that boosted her confidence. Despite the luggage, both machines had been a complete hoot on the twisty roads through the forest. We both agreed, after some 270km, that the seats on both bikes left little to be desired in the comfort stakes. After the Rawene ferry it was damage control on the bum front for the final 60km push to Ahipara and our first night’s stop. The following morning gave us our first view of what was to come – the sands of 90-Mile Beach stretched into the distance as far as the eye could see. But Ahipara wasn’t to be our beach embarkation point. Instead, we scooted around to Waipupukairi with its easy access. Both

DRs made easy work of the soft sand immediately by the access ramp – something several two-wheel drive cars didn’t. Leaving the stranded automobiles behind us we tentatively started to head north, our speed slowly building as we both got used to the unfamiliar feeling of riding on a beach. Drifting into the softer sand further up the beach it was clear that the smaller bike/rider/luggage combination of the 200 was an easier proposition than the well-loaded 650 and its well-loaded rider. If you’ve never ridden 90-Mile Beach then I suggest you put a trip in your diary. The sensation of riding between the dunes and surf with no other vehicles as far as the eye can see is one of pure escapism. Apart from the odd fisherman we saw nobody on our trip up and back the beach. Finding a secluded spot for lunch was simply a case of pulling to the foot of a small dune and unpacking our bags. Our picnic, sourced beforehand at Kaitaia, and eaten in the secluded beauty of the beach was one for the memory banks. Back down the beach with the occasional gull pacing us, we skirted the two cars which were now bellied in the sand and took to the sealed road for our night’s stop at The Farm (see boxout). A couple of gravel roads punctuated the kilometres of seal, showing the versatility of both bikes. See a gravel road winding into the hills? Both DRs are happy to oblige

The definition of ‘Adventure Riding’ is as broad as it is tall. John Nick unravels the adventure ride.

ADVENTURE RIDING EXPLAINED Words & photos: John Nick

A

dventure Riding, we often hear the term, but what exactly is an Adventure Ride; a rugged off road bash, or a gentle cruise on country back roads? In fact Adventure Rides cover this broad spectrum and more, so let’s explain some of the variations, which bikes are suitable and what type of terrain is covered.

WHAT BIKE? Before we look at the various types of rides, let’s consider what we mean by a dual-purpose bike. True to the everything-to-all-men nature of adventure riding, it’s possible to use any road legal bike, from a full on four-stroke competition enduro, like my ultra-lightweight Husaberg FE350, to a 1200cc BMW GS tourer, or any of the weird and wonderful bikes between. There really are no rules and with a wide variety of terrain and events possible, it’s up to the rider to choose the terrain, or event, suitable for their situation.

60

KIWI RIDER

LOCAL DIY ADVENTURES As simple as the words say, DIY adventures are ones that you conjure up yourself – easy backroads, legal paper roads, bush trails – it is up to your imagination. My only words of caution are keep it legal, get permission for private land and if you are going remote, don’t go alone and consider what communications you might need if something goes wrong.

ADVENTURE RIDES AND ADVENTURE TRAIL RIDES Several companies and groups of riders organise self-guided adventure rides in NZ. These rides last from one to two days and are designed for both large and small dual-purpose bikes from 200 to 1200cc, usually with optional loops to take into account differing skill and fitness levels. There may be up to 100 or more riders taking part, from grizzled experts to relative beginners. On these rides riders self-navigate with route sheets loaded into a kiddies lunch box mounted to the bar. Rides labelled as Adventure Trail Rides are usually intended solely for lighter weight trail and road-legal enduro bikes.

The annual Yamaha Safari is a multi-day adventure ride lasting from three to five days with riders self-navigating a pre-planned course along with up to 150 other riders. The route may be up to 300km per day and will include some tar-sealed highways and back roads, gravel roads, rougher clay or grass paper roads, as well as farm and forest tracks. The basic route would be suitable for large and small road-legal trail and dual-purpose bikes from 200 to 1200cc. You can expect to see bikes ranging from little Yamaha 225 Serow trail bikes to big BMW R1250GS models. Some riders even opt to take pillion passengers. More experienced riders on lighter bikes will get the chance to take optional, more challenging, deviations interspersed through the route. Safaris are designed for riders with some off-road experience. If you are a hot-and-fast trail racer you may find the Safaris too relaxed for you. Much emphasis is placed on socialising, camaraderie, plus good food and accommodation. Where multiple venues are used, support vehicles will typically carry the riders’ luggage.

GUIDED ADVENTURE RIDES These rides are fully guided with lead and tail riders and supported by back up vehicles that carry luggage and spares and cater for groups of up to 20 riders. Often from three to seven days in duration, these are the ultimate adventure experience, covering huge expanses of truly remarkable terrain. The best NZ rides are considered to be in the South Island and overseas experts have labelled some of these as the best rides on the planet. Comfortable accommodation and all meals are included and where multiple venues are used the riders’ luggage is carried by support vehicles. Two distinct types of rides are offered. For large capacity bikes the guided adventure will include tar-sealed roads, gravel roads and moderate off road sections of 4x4 tracks. Guided adventure trail rides, though going on road at times to link access, are much more trail focused and are only suitable for lighter enduro-style four-strokes from 250 to 450cc. Riders and bikes must be well prepared so neither style of ride are suitable for beginners.
