KIWI RIDER
ELLO... and welcome to the March 2016 issue of Kiwi Rider magazine. History was made at the Woodville MX GP this month. Courtney Duncan became the first female to win the MX2 race outright, which is an achievement in itself but the level at which Courtney rode showed the top males a clean pair of heels. It’s a stunning result and will hopefully show our up-and-coming female riders that they can compete toe-to-toe with the best in the business. Head to the Roost Zone for more (page 67). Another first was Toby Price becoming the first Australian to win the gruelling 2016 Dakar Rally, which was even more of an achievement considering Price broke suffered a broken neck less than three years
before. Turn to page 76 for the story of Price’s Dakar. We love a home-brewed special here at KR and they don’t come much more home-brewed than our No.8 Wire feature bike this month. It’s a hillclimb special with a CR500 chassis and an RD465 motor with all the fabrication done by the owner/builder. See page 55 for more. Todd Sutherland and I got the opportunity to try Aprilia’s RSV-4 and Tuono 1100RR on track recently and I can only say Aprilia’s v-four motor is a stunner. The stand-out bike though, despite the RSV-4’s track prowess is the Tuono. Comfortable, fast and competent, it’s a road and track weapon. See page 46 for more on both. Enjoy the mag.

BMW GS Rallye date announced
A
dventure enthusiasts should set aside Saturday April 16 for the BMW GS Rallye, a gravel and sealed road ride to honour the BMW GS models that have defined dual purpose riding for the last 35 years. The GS Rallye venue is Raglan, west of Hamilton, with the ride HQ at the Raglan Club right in the centre of the picturesque seaside town. Kiwi Rider mag is organising the event with the support of BMW Motoradd NZ. Event co-ordinator is John Nicholson who has run ten BMW NZ Safaris and many other rides. Nick Lewis, BMW Motorrad National Sales Manager, says that BMW is proud to back a ride that will cater for the unique combination of capabilities that the GS models represent. ‘Our concept is that the GS Rallye will combine all the elements that GS owners will enjoy, great riding and scenery, a fun venue and the chance to show off their bikes and socialise with likeminded enthusiasts.’ While the GS Rallye is BMW supported, the ride is open to riders on any brand and capacity of road legal dual-purpose bike. The course is very much a work in progress, but John Nick is upbeat about the roads in the area. ‘Raglan is a great venue, as there is a maze of amazing gravel and sealed roads in the area. With the GS Rallye course we are going back to our roots, catering for true dual-purpose bikes and giving riders loads of options to suit their riding preferences. Big dual-purpose bikes are not designed for hard offroad conditions, so there will be a base route comprised mainly of sealed roads plus clearly defined options for those who want more gravel and adventure.’ Plans are also underway on the social front. At the Raglan Club riders will be treated to a welcome Bavarian barbecue on Friday evening and an after-ride dinner on Saturday. Another feature of the Rallye will be displays of BMW GS models, from 1980 to the present day and competitions for the best air- and oil-cooled GS bikes. All riders entered in the event will also go into the draw for valuable prizes including a BMW riding suit and adventure tyres. More information will be released shortly. Meanwhile you can follow GS Rallye announcements in Kiwi Rider, on the KR website and on the new BMW GS Rallye Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ bmwgsrallye).

FROST PUTS THE FREEZE ON HIS RIVALS
W
ellington’s Sloan Frost needed to be as cool as ice this season. The refrigeration engineer established a solid lead during the opening three rounds of the New Zealand Superbike Championships in January, but still had to endure a nervous six-week wait for the final showdown. With a vice-like grip on the superbike class points lead after the third round of the series, it would have been easy for him to imagine winning his first New Zealand Superbike Championship crown at the final round at Hampton Downs in March. With an unbeaten run at the series opener at Ruapuna, near Christchurch, a solid display at round two at Teretonga, near Invercargill, and then other win streak at Levels Raceway, near Timaru, the 34-year-old Suzuki star was truly in command of the glamour superbike class. Frost captured two race wins in the class at Levels – the weekend reduced from three to two outings for each class after a serious crash incident involving three-time Isle of Man winning legend Shaun Harris on the Saturday – and he now leads the series by 43 points over Christchurch’s John Ross, who is locked in a see-saw battle with nine-time former superbike champion Andrew Stroud, of Hamilton. All three men are on board virtually identical Suzuki GSX-R1000 machines. “Just a small change in temperature can make such a big difference with regards to tyre choice and it was really just a matter of getting that right,” said Frost. “After that it was just a matter of riding my own race, checking my pit board each lap and staying in front. “There are four races to go at the final round (at Hampton Downs on March 5-6) and I’m feeling confident. That’s my strongest track but there are still 100 points up for grabs, so it’s not done and dusted yet. I need to ride smart.” Ross twice finished runner-up to Frost at Levels and that was enough for him to leapfrog back past Stroud, who finished fourth there both times.

SUMMERS STROUD
Stroud was beaten to the finish line at Levels by Whakatane’s Tony Rees (Honda CBR1000RR) in race one, while Taupo’s Scott Moir (Suzuki GSX-R1000) took the third spot in race two. Moir is fourth in the overall championship standings, just 17 points behind Stroud. Christchurch’s Cameron Hudson was similarly dominant in the 600cc supersport class at Levels Raceway, finishing second to Wainuiomata’s Shane Richardson in one race and then winning the other and stretching his series advantage to 37.5 points over Glen Eden’s Daniel Mettam.
Christchurch’s Dennis Charlett bagged two more race wins in the lightweight class to pad his series lead out to 11 points over Rolleston’s Tim McArthur, while dual-class campaigner Charlett also scored two wins in the 650cc Pro Twin class, stretching his series lead there to 19 points over Ashburton’s Bailie Perriton. Charlett also won the Alan Ramage Memorial competition, finishing the three-race event that was exclusive to Levels ahead of Timaru’s Richard Willetts and Timaru’s Grant Ramage, a younger brother of the late Alan. In the sidecars class, it was another

double win for Auckland’s Colin Buckley and Tauranga’s Robbie Shorter, who grew their championship lead to 64 points over Wairarapa pair Spike Taylor and Astrid Hartnell. Hamilton’s Jacob Stroud scored two wins in the 250cc production class, although Ashburton’s Lewis Dray did enough in finishing

the day in runner-up spot to keep his series lead. With New Plymouth’s Harris crashing out of the superlites class on Saturday and a non-starter on Sunday, dual-class rider Jacob Stroud was free to rule and he won both races in the class on Sunday. Stroud is now second in the standings, just one point adrift of Harris.
The riders had plenty of time to re-gather their thoughts and re-tune their motorcycles as they prepared for the fourth and final round of the New Zealand Superbike Championships at Hampton Downs, near Meremere, on March 5-6.

umbers were up again up this year for the 23rd year running. Although, for the first time in years, the weather didn’t behave there was still plenty of time and good weather to get around and see some of the huge number of great machinery – both of competing bikes and those ridden to the event. Without doubt this is the biggest group of Kiwis competing at an international motorcycle meeting this year, the famous(ly fast) circuit is a magnet for all. And while the teams event saw New Zealand take a battering, there were still victories for many, both individual and outright. There were battles before wheels even started turning. Kiwi race winners Damian Mackie (RG500 - 500cc Period 6), Chris Swallow (TT2 500cc Period 5) and Nick Cole (500cc Classic) all had major mechanical repairs to overcome to even get on the grid.

Swallow’s team resorted to using a bottom end, donated and collected out of a bike in Melbourne (4+ hours round trip) on the Friday evening before qualifying (i.e. they had to get the motor out of the donor bike first) Then the replacement motor was re-fitted with the heads and barrels from the race bike and run on Friday night at a secluded test “track”. All of which makes Swallow’s wet Race 2 win all the more impressive. Sadly though all the kiwi race winners, went on to record DNF in other races and so missed out on any chance of winning a class overall. Others had frustrating failures also. Vince Burrell, a top contender on his Moto Guzzi, got a flat on a newly-fitted tyre right before a race, while Kevin MacDonald broke his frame. Twice. Alistair Wilton only managed one lap for qualifying on a borrowed bike because his carburettor slides kept jamming in the soaking wet conditions. And after making it through most of the weekend unscathed, Mark Hosier got hit by an errant exhaust pipe!

This all pretty much sealed the team’s fate at the bottom of the table. To make things worse, top Scorer Peter Byers had the added frustration of a 10-second penalty for a jumped start. Worse still... boatie Grant Dalton crashed on oil in practice, breaking his wrist, putting him out of action before the weekend event really got going. In amongst all this turmoil for the Kiwis there was still some great racing to watch. Trevor Taylor secured a fine third place in the 500cc Period 5 class and Island Classic veteran, Alistair Wilton, blitzed through the fields, from lowly grid positions to record his best ever finishes and lap times. Along with the first class battles in the ‘international challenge’ races, the sight of Beau Beaton winning the first two International Challenge races on the Irving Vincent Black Lightening was right up there too. The Australian and UK teams are still in a league of their own though.

They both feature lots of backing, fast bikes and fast riders. The UK team was victorious for the second year in a row, with ex-GP talent Jeremy McWilliams finishing equal top points scorer with Australian Jed Metcher. That battle (the Ken Wootton Perpetual Trophy) coming down to the final race with McWilliams admitting “I definitely didn’t have the speed to catch Jed — broken steering damper or not — but I didn’t want to give him the victory that easily.”
Second tier competition tears The highest point-scorer for third-placed Ireland was expatriate Paul Byrne (Suzuki McIntosh) in 11th overall. Byrne’s teammate Ben Rea (Suzuki XR69) finished in 12th, while the highest point-scorers for America and New Zealand were Pat Mooney (Harris Yamaha) and Pete Byers in 16th and 20th respectively.

lassically styled, the 300 GTS Super Sport is a LAMScompliant scooter that sits at the top of Vespa’s scooter range and features traction control, ABS, a USB socket for charging your mobile phone, remote seat unlocking and a fancy multimedia connection for a smartphone that will display everything from parked location, journey details and more. But I’ll come back to that. Vespa says the engine in its GTS Super is the most powerful engine ever mounted in a Vespa. We don’t doubt that for one minute. Tester Michael Esdaile was impressed with the engine when we tested the 300 GTS in 2014, both from a performance perspective as well as it being the most efficient large capacity Vespa we’ve ever tested. This time around, the GTS Super returned a worst of 27km/l, with no regard for fuel economy and will easily get 200km before the fuel light comes on. The engine is a 278cc, single-cylinder four-stroke with four valves and electronic fuel injection, which Vespa claims to have 15.8kW (22hp) at the crankshaft. I have to say, it’s certainly got some pep! Acceleration away from a set of traffic lights or a junction is super-zippy and allows the GTS to go for gaps in traffic that a car just couldn’t do. With the centrifugal/automatic clutch, all that’s required

Words: Ben Wilkins Photos: Geoff Osborne is to point the handlebars and twist the throttle – there’s never any fear of stalling the engine. Adding to the bike’s ability to contend with city traffic are the 12-inch wheels, which confer an agility that makes heavy traffic a breeze. It’s easy to see why the European’s love these things for city life. Where the GTS scores on top of smaller capacity scooters is that it’s got the legs for getting out of the city too. Acceleration from 50 to 80km/h is rapid and the GTS will keep up with traffic everywhere from the city centre to the motorway. If you kept the throttle pinned open the Super Sport would eventually get to 130km/h – more than fast enough. One of the major benefits of a scooter is the amount of storage space the capacious bodywork offers. An electrically operated switch mounted below the ignition key gives access to an underseat storage space. The underseat storage is reasonably-sized and an improvement on previous versions of the machine. Unfortunately it wasn’t big enough to hold any of the full-faced helmets we tried to fit inside. Open-faced helmets would likely have more chance of fitting inside, so I typically used it to hold my jacket and gloves. There aren’t any hooks to secure a helmet to the exterior of the scooter, which meant I either had to carry my helmet or fix it to the passenger grab rail. That said, there is plenty of room aboard for a decent amount of shopping under the seat and
all that’s required is to point the handlebars and twist the throttle

Aprilia’s V-four range includes the RSV4R and Tuono. Where better to see what they can truly do than at a race track? Hampton Downs, and a BBQ tempted Todd Sutherland and Ben Wilkins out of the office.
I
n 2008 I was fortunate enough to attend the World launch of the Aprilia RSV4. I mused then that the new Aprilia V4 had brought the homologation special back to the common man, joining the likes of the Honda RC30 and Yamaha OW01 as something very special. It featured adjustable engine mounts, swingarm pivot and steering head angle at a time when all the other manufacturers’ bikes needed a race-kit or different frame. Ok, so I’m sure 99% of buyers didn’t adjust a single thing - and let’s be honest, how many actually adjust their suspension, let alone frame geometries? -
46
KIWI RIDER
APRILIA TUONO Grunty, grunty motor; great electronics; top comfort Needs suspension tweaking for best track performance
but that’s not the point. The point is that the Aprilia RSV4 is trick, and that counts for a lot when you’re paying a lot of money for a motorcycle. For 2015/16, Aprilia has updated the RSV4 once again, keeping the vee-four engine format alive and kicking at the very highest level of racing. If you’ve never ridden a vee-four sports bike, you really do owe it to yourself - there’s a reason riders of a certain age go misty-eyed when you mention the Honda RC30 or RC45. The format doesn’t provide the most outright power (that goes to the inline, transverse four) nor does it provide the most punch (vee-twins are great for this) but what it does provide is the smoothest and creamiest best of both worlds; lots of bottom-end and mid-range but with a great top-end. The 2015/2016 RSV4 engine has seen some significant modifications to keep the veefour apace with other top-of-the-range sports bikes, which are now all claiming just over 200hp.
Aprilia claims 201hp for the RSV4, up some 16hp on the 2014 model. The company also says the engine is 2.5kg lighter than before, the majority of which comes from a redesigned upper engine case, lighter cams and conrods. With the engine capacity staying the same, you can only extract more power from an engine at the same revs by increasing its efficiency but to make significantly more power (16hp is pretty significant) the only way to do it is rev higher. By reducing mass and friction in the engine Aprilia has done just that, the new motor now makes 201hp at 13,000rpm, some 500rpm higher than before. To give us a real feel for what the RSV4 and the Tuono can do, Aprilia NZ gave us the opportunity to ride the bikes at Hampton Downs. We tested both the RSV4RR and the RSV4RR Race Pack (which features Ohlins suspension and lightweight forged alloy wheels) alongside the Tuono 1100RR street naked.

Nobody could ever say Honda’s CR500 lacked power. This hillclimb special isn’t your average CR...
H
onda’s CR500 two-stroke has a reputation. Like people, some bikes have reputations they don’t deserve. The CR500 deserves every bit of its reputation as a hard-hitting, beast of yesteryear. They were ridden by men who had no fear of death at the hands of Honda’s red-winged Valkyre. This CR, like all the others, started life as a motocrosser with a single cylinder, big bore twostroke nestling between the steel frame tubes. Like many other machines, when the four-strokes 450s asserted themselves, the CR500 was dropped from the range after long and faithful, if brutal, service. In the UK at least, the CR became a firm favourite with tar-seal hillclimb racers where it was, and still is, a potent tool in the right hands. That’s where this machine ended up. But its path diverged slightly... Ok, this is no road-going machine. It’s a raceonly hillclimb special that’s been built with one purpose and one purpose only; to take outright hill records at several of the ‘big’ tracks around the UK. The owner and builder is Glyn Poole. Glyn is well known on the UK hillclimb scene. He’s won
multiple titles and is one of the fastest riders out there. As you’ll see, he’s also incredibly good with a welding torch – he should be; he’s a fabricator by trade. For those that don’t know, hillclimbing is a grass roots form of motorsport. Forget the American style of hillclimb that involves bolting a six foot long swingarm into a motocrosser and trying to ride up the side of a mountain. No, British hillclimbs require far more finesse. They’re time-trials that take place on twisty, often uphill, stretches of private road and are anything from quarter of a mile to a mile in length. The competitors take their turn to begin from a standing start and get to the top of the hill as quickly as their cold tyres will let them (tyre warmers aren’t allowed, in a bid to keep things affordable and all bikes – road or race – on an equal footing) and the fastest bikes are often 450 to 750cc supermoto machines. These bikes are small, light and powerful single cylinder machines. As we said above, the Honda CR500 two-stroke motocrosser has been a very popular bike to hillclimb with. In fact, Glyn rides one of them very successfully. He explains: “I did my first hillclimb in 1991 but only really started riding full time in 1998. I’ve mostly ridden a Honda

2016 Honda New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville AUSSIE TAKES NZ GP TITLE TWO YEARS IN A ROW
M
ount Maunganui’s Cody Cooper has been denied for a second consecutive season. He was hoping to join an exclusive club this year – intending to become a rare three-time winner of the iconic Honda New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville – but once again he was deprived by a trans-Tasman invader. The two-time former Woodville champion was stopped last season by Australian Kirk Gibbs and this time around it was another Australian, New South Welshman Dean Ferris, who rose up to claim the main trophy at Woodville. 32-year-old Cooper, the reigning New Zealand MX1 motocross champion, lived up to his star billing when he again won the MX1 class at Woodville, but this 55th edition of the great event was another case of Cooper winning the battles but losing the war, with Ferris leading from start to finish in the gruelling five-lap Invitation Feature Race, becoming the 28th different main event winner at Woodville since the inaugural event in 1961. “It is pretty special to win here. I had only ever heard of this event once before coming here and that was because of that crazy river race,” said the 25-year-old Ferris, from Kyogle, in New South Wales. “It’s great to begin my build-up for the Australian nationals with a win like this.” Cooper won the MX1 class with a 1-2-2 score-card, finishing the day four points ahead of Ferris, while Otago’s just-turned 20-year-old Courtney Duncan stunned the testosteronefuelled MX2 (250cc) class to snatch that class win with an outstanding 1-3-2 score-line and Feilding’s Tony Cvitanovich did enough in finishing 4-4-3 to be crowned 125cc class champion at Woodville on Sunday. Not only did 15-year-old Cvitanovich win the 125cc class, but he was also rewarded with the Roddy Shirriffs Memorial Trophy as the highest-placed senior 125cc class rider under the age of 22. The winner of the spectacular river race class was Palmerston North’s James Galpin, the 18-year-old engineer finishing only fourth in the first of Sunday’s two river races, which was won by Taupo’s Brad Groombridge, but he bounced back and weathered a series of attacks from Masterton’s Allan Gannon to eventually win the second race and claim the overall win by just two points from Groombridge. The founder of the iconic event, Palmerston North’s Tim Gibbes, was on hand for the final presentation ceremonies and he expressed enthusiasm that the Woodville motocross would live on forever.
Dean Ferris (left), winner of the main race at Woodville this year has a chat with Palmerston North’s Tim Gibbes, the now-82-year-old former GP racer who founded the Woodville Motocross in 1961. Gibbes won the Woodville title in 1962 and again in 1964

Toby Price makes
Dakar History At his second attempt Aussie Toby Price has won the Dakar Rally and become the first Aussie to win. Words: Michael Esdaile / Photos: Kin M, KTM
L
ast year Price made his Dakar début, winning a stage and finishing third overall. This year he won five of the 12 stages and had taken the lead early in the second week, then managed his position to the finish, covering 9000km of riding, including 48 hours of timed stages. The 28-year-old took victory ahead of KTM privateer rider Stefan Svitko of Slovakia. Chilean Husqvarna rider Pablo Quintanilla rounded out the podium ahead of top Honda rider Kevin Benavides, while Yamaha’s Helder Rodrigues took fifth. Australia’s King of the Desert lived up to his name in the gruelling ninth stage, held over soft sand in blazing heat. He was one of a handful of riders to complete the full distance that day. Rather than eliminating the majority of the bike field, the organisers took the decision to call the results as the riders had made it to the second check point. Fortunately for him, Price had been leading at that stage too. Having gone on to complete the full distance, he was sanguine about the decision to eliminate his, by then, big advantage. “I get to the finishing line and then they cancel the rest of it… That’s a bit of a shame, but that’s the way it is. We’ll just have to wait and see and see what call they come up with. It’s a bit of a bummer for me… I have to get to the finishing line and I’ve done that, but they’ve called it. I guess that’s just the way it is,” he said. Price rode hard and fast for the rest of the Rally, never damaged his KTM nor over-worked the engine, or missed his navigation markers. It was without doubt the biggest win of his stellar career which started in 2003 when he won the top two divisions of the Australian Junior Motocross Championship, racing a Kawasaki KX125 and a KX250F in the 125cc two-stroke and 250cc four-stroke divisions. This was 12 weeks after breaking both wrists. Price switched over to off-road racing soon after and has so far notched up five Hattah Desert Rally wins in Victoria, along with four Finke Desert Race wins in the Northern Territory. He is also a two times Australian Off Road Champion, and two times ISDE Gold medallist. It was at the 2012 ISDE, in Germany, that he proved his mental toughness. After the first two days, he was leading the E3 class (fifth overall) despite a bent front wheel from the first day. Near the halfway mark of the event, he suffered broken ribs in an incident. He continued despite the injuries, finishing second in the E3 class and tenth overall. Then, two weeks after returning from the ISDE, Price won the E3 class in the A4DE, coming second overall – still riding with broken ribs Bigger challenges lay ahead. Receiving only subtle tweaks for 2016, Honda’s CRF450R comes under the KR microscope with Dr McLauchlan attending.
I
t’s rumoured that 2017 will be a big year for the Honda 450 MX1 machine, when an all new bike is widely expected to be unveiled. So, for this year Honda has left its big-bore blaster 450 almost unchanged – there aren’t even any bold new graphics. However, subtle and useful alterations to the forks, which are 5mm longer and have reduced internal friction, plus a new rear linkage ratio along with a smaller chain roller do make the Honda a more composed and very nice handling weapon on the track. The overhead Unicam motor (liquid cooled, four-valve, fivespeed) is a beauty... but... it will never win the hearts of the huge power brigade. That said, riders who love useable, linear power that goes straight to the ground with minimal fuss or wheel spin will get along just fine with the Honda. And to be fair, that’s the smart rider. As the Pirelli adverts are keen to point out - power is nothing without control. I found the ‘16 450 will flame out occasionally at very low revs, so I like to keep the idle up a whisker on the CRF. Once rolling the power delivery is super tractable and very quick over the first 15 to 20 metres on the way out of a turn. The torque is strong and delivered well; it will pull a high-ish gear from reasonably low revs. The CRF feels as quick as the even more powerful 450s (more powerful on paper maybe) and possibly the quickest of the lot in slick terrain straight off the turn. However, in wide, open going like the fast tracks at the Woodhill Forest Sandpit the Honda does feel a little flat high in the rev range compared to other machines in the 450 MX1 class. Whether this lack of top end power has impact in real MX race conditions is debatable and will all boil down to the rider and the openness of track. A very fit and fast rider may need, and be able to use, more power on longer straights, but the reality is a smooth tractable power delivery is best for most and this is what the Honda delivers. After all, 53-odd horsepower is still a decent amount. Power modes for different conditions are all the rage and the Honda is no exception. Three modes are selectable via a button on the handle bar. There’s a slower-revving, more mellow, mode for extremely gnarly conditions – or perhaps novice 450 rider – accessed by holding the
84
KIWI RIDER
button down until you have one blue flash. Two blue flashes at the button is the standard and default mode at re-start time and three flashes is the aggressive mode. The mellow mode is very smooth and easy for all to use, while the aggressive mode increases the intensity with which the revs build – it simply revs harder and faster and certainly feels more assertive in its delivery. Having said that, I like the default ‘standard’ mode best, it gives great useable power for a very wide range of conditions. To sum up, this is a genuinely good motor for the vast majority of riders with only its slight inclination to stall at idle speeds that I would like to see improved. For 2016 subtle chassis changes have made the 450 a little more stable and composed at all times over last year’s model and the front wheel feels more planted too. In theory the 450 should turn slightly slower because of the longer forks, but this wasn’t noticeable. The steering head angle is 27.25 degrees with 117mm of trail. The new bike feels lower at the rear because of the new linkage and combined with the longer forks equates to a far more balanced and confidenceinspiring machine on the track, but one that still turns very well. I like the overall feeling of the 450’s ergos. The Honda looks small, is very slim and yet feels quite roomy because the old-style Renthal skinny bars are mounted high, are a great bend and nicely positioned. The rubber-mounted bar mounts offer a modest amount of forward/ backward adjustment when rotated 180 degrees. And, as usual, the CRF is beautifully made and all controls work with a very smooth and effortless action. The front forks are 48mm KYB USD PSF units with 310mm of wheeltravel. They have adjustable Hi- and Low-speed compression and rebound damping. I rode the bike with the air pressure standard as per the owners’ manual of 35psi in both fork legs and was happy with this spring rate setting. In general the forks are pretty good. They are quite compliant on small bumps at low speed, but perhaps a little harsh in higher speed square edge hits with the standard clicker settings. Also they’re reasonably bottom-resistant and certainly very adjustable. Most riders should find a decent setting up front with a little testing

Husqvarna FE250 Words: Jock McLauchlan Photos: Geoff Osborne
Winner of the NZ 0-300cc four-stroke enduro championship and in our garage for a few months, the KR dirt team are getting to grips with our long term FE250.
K
R has the awesome little Husqvarna FE250 four-stroke as a long time test machine. Over the next few months we will keep you updated on how this quarter litre beast performs in all the different terrain we can throw it at. Plus we’ll give you opinions from all our testers. Sam Greenslade (our resident hard man/hard rider), Liam Draper (our young fast dude), Jake Whitaker (trials and enduro supremo), and me – the old and well, err, old bloke (Jock’s not one to blow his trumpet but he’s an ISDE veteran and ex national champ - Ed). In the meantime, this is an initial ‘heads up’ on it and how she goes. The first thing that occurred to me was, why would I buy the Husky as opposed to the KTM? They both have a similar chrome molybdenum central tube steel frame. The 249.91cc DOHC, liquid cooled six-speed engines are more-or-less identical. Both have a 970mm seat height. The 260mm front and 220mm rear Brembo brakes are the same. Both have the same steering head angle of 26.5 degrees, the list goes on. So, what is different apart from the colour schemes? The differences come largely with the suspension. The Husky gets top of the line USD WP 4CS forks with the same 300mm of wheel travel as the KTM. Then out back the Husky has a WP shock with 330mm wheel travel mounted on a rising rate linkage while the KTM has a PDS rear end with 5mm more travel. Also the sub-frames are different with the Husky a composite plastic unit while the KTM has an alloy one. Most
interesting to me is the KTM is almost two kg lighter than the Husky’s 107.3kg, both bikes measured without fuel... Yes, that linkage must come at a slight weight cost. To ride, the FE250 is delightful. In fact, it is hard to imagine an off-road bike that is more pleasant to ride. For general play riding and trail hooning it is an absolute blast and all riders from modest ability up, will most likely find it a very forgiving accomplice. It just does everything so effortlessly. The power delivery is very smooth, very tractable and surprising quick. This is with the engine map switch set to its most aggressive position. I’m not sure when you’d need to use the mellower setting? Perhaps ice riding...? To go quick the motor is at its best in high traction, tight terrain. Its downside is heavy wet or sandy soils in open going, but the disadvantage is definitely not what it feels. It may not roost like a 450 but it is not wasting drive either. Handling-wise, and this shouldn’t be surprising really, the FE250 feels like the PDS KTM with very agile steering and okay balance. The FE was brand new when I rode it so the the suspension has more than likely settled in since then, but on the day the rear suspension sat high, with the forks feeling softer than the shock, particularly heading down hill in sand. Other than the high riding rear end the action is hard to fault for general off-road blasting. Plush, decently progressive, but perhaps the shocks rebound is a whisker quick as delivered. Of course, down the road with more hours in the saddle, I’ll be able to comment on the suspension with greater conviction – and what differences can be made with the adjusters. As usual with offerings from Brembo, the
brakes are excellent, giving impressive stopping power with great feel at both ends. The ergos are on the large side and I find them excellent. However the seat height is right up there... a taller rider will be more at home than a short one. The sub-frame on the husky does flare out down below the start of the rear guard, reminiscent of an old twin shocker. This is not so nice and I find the KTM is better in this regard. Otherwise all else is great. Bars, seat, levers etc, all first rate. These are early days I know, but this little Husky is shaping up just fine.
it is hard to imagine an off-road bike that is more pleasant to ride

A VERY SPECIAL SPORTS BIKE Paul Smart leads Bruno Spaggiari home at the 1972 Imola 200
I
n April 1972 an event occurred that would establish the sporting credentials of Ducati for ever, well for the next 44 years at least. Daytona had become the battlefield, and gold standard, for big-bore motorcycle racing. Until that auspicious date there was no equivalent spectacle in Europe. The 5km Imola circuit near Rimini, on Italy’s Adriatic coast, became the Daytona of Europe. A crowd of 70,000 flocked to what was to be called the Imola 200. A 320km race for the big bikes to stretch their legs. This was the moment that Ducati’s chief engineer Fabio Taglioni would prove to the world the effectiveness of his Desmodromic valve system. The race was dominated by two experienced men. The winner British rider Paul Smart, and in second place 39-year old Italian Bruno Spaggiari, both mounted on 750cc Desmodromic V-twin Ducatis. V-twin engines have been around for as long as motorcycles, but the L-shape configuration created by Taglioni was something different. Excellent cooling and low centre of gravity were an advantage, but the resulting longer wheelbase could have a negative effect on handling. Taglioni solved the problem by placing the almost horizontal front cylinder between the front down tubes of the frame. In 1971 he produced the GT750, the forerunner of the 750SS and it
quickly became apparent that the Gran Turismo was also a very likely Super Sport. Hence the entry of two metal flake silver V-twin 750s at Imola in 1972. The one-two victory was historic in proportion. Behind them came the cream of the racing machines of the day; Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Moto Guzzi, Triumph, and MV Agusta, and the riders included Giacomo Agostini, Phil Read, and Walter Villa. The publicity generated was enormous, and Ducati was elevated to the elite ranks of the finest sports motorcycles ever made. Smart’s victory ranks with the miraculous Mike Hailwood ‘come back’, when in 1978 he returned to the Isle of Man, having left Grand Prix racing 11 years previously, and won the Formula One TT on an 864cc Ducati V-twin. Ducati prepared to capitalise on the Imola victory, and it was no surprise when in 1973-74 four hundred and fifty 750 Super Sport models, which unofficially came to be known as Imola Replicas, were built. At the time it was the ultimate road-going sports machine. The handling was superb, the brakes excellent, and it was fast. To add spice to the mix, it was beautiful to look at, and the Conti mufflers produced a sound that was unequalled in motorcycling, and sadly is unlikely ever to be repeated in our often over-regulated world. The world’s motorcycle press was ecstatic. ‘a bike that stands at the farthest reaches of the sporting world - the definitive factory built
