Hello...

H EDITOR Ben Wilkins

Contributions: Kiwi Rider welcomes

bikes. KTM stunned the motorcycling community with the incredibly potent Super Duke 1290 last year. This year the Austrian manufacturer has come up with possibly the most bonkers ‘tourer’ ever conceived – the 1290 GT. Capable, potent and fast with panniers and a screen, the new machine has created a niche all of its own. See page 28. With many customised bikes, money seems to be no object for some owners. But not all bikes can be bought and even if they can, they’re beyond the pockets of the majority. This month’s No.8 Wire shows what can be done with some lateral thinking and a tight budget. Turn to page 48 for more. Enjoy the mag. BEN WILKINS

ELLO... and welcome to the May 2016 issue of Kiwi Rider magazine. Summer still seems to be holding on and we’re into April already. It’s been a great summer season. For those of us that ride through the Autumn and Winter, see to page 106 for some easy tips on making those rides safer. Ever been to a MotoGP race? It’s something of a circus and a huge spectacle for anyone with even a passing interest in motorcycles. MV AGUSTA IN STRIFE

N

iche player MV Agusta is again in financial difficulties, continuing the saga that began in 2004 when the Italian company was sold to Malaysian car maker Proton for 70 million Euro. A year after that, Proton sold the company to Genoa-based financing company GEVI SpA for 1 Euro. Two years later, GEVI had reduced its stake in the company to 65% of the shares, allowing the company to continue under the management of the Castiglioni family, who had first bought the brand in 1991. On July 11, 2008, Harley-Davidson announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the MV Agusta Group for €70 million, completing the acquisition on August 8 that year, but just over a year later Harley sold the company back to Claudio Castiglioni and his wholly owned holding company, MV Agusta Motor Holding, S.r.l. Following Claudio Castiglioni’s death in 2011, the company continued under the leadership of his son Giovanni then in October 2014 Mercedes-AMG announced the acquisition of a 25% minority stake in MV Agusta. On March 22, MV Agusta applied to be put into controlled administration, the

Italian equivalent of the USA’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy, allowing the company to continue trading while it seeks debt restructuring. The company’s production line is at a standstill, workers have been laid off

and the company needs fresh capital. Word is Mercedes-AMG is prepared to increase its investment, but only if it has full control, but CEO Giovani Castiglioni is unwilling to let go of the reins. The question is... who will blink first?

Triumph’s 29th RAT RAID

(Riders Association of Triumph) event is scheduled to take place on April 15-17. Registration is $399 per person and includes accommodation for two nights at the Lakes Lodge Wilderness Retreat, rides on Friday and Saturday, dinner on Friday night, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday as well as evening entertainment. You also get a commemorative Raid t-shirt.

Sound of Thunder 2016

A

Words: Murray Sutherland / Photos: Shoot the Moon Photography team of 14 riders from Australia were greeted by perfect conditions for the annual three day BEARS Sound of Thunder event. Ruapuna, just outside of Christchurch, threw up some new challenges for the Aussie visitors. Amongst the team were some veterans including 20-time competitor Eddy Garner and some young hot shots too. Royce Rowe was on the trick Ducati 696 he rode at the Isle of Man and upcoming BSB Supersport star Levi Day rode a heavily modified Ducati 900. The Milwaukee Iron field was the biggest in years, enriched somewhat by the many Buells and Harley Sportsters from over the Ditch. However it was local boys Jimi Martin (Buell 1125),

Levi Day (L) and John Woodley (W) chased by Kiwis Buff (103) and O’Connor (76) Chris Bridge (264) and Tony Manson (74)

Lewis Dray on an RC390

The Aussie Invasion

Lee Munro (121) pushed Dennis Charlett, but never quite got him

Chris Bridge and Trevor Chapman (both on EBRs) who took the spoils. At 65 years young John Woodley on an MV Agusta 1000 proved he hadn’t lost his talent from his many championship wins back in 70s. Another yesteryear hero was three-time Daytona winner and ex-factory rider Walt Fulton from the USA. Walt (68) was no slouch on a bike and track he had never seen, but still managed to put in some top 10 finishes in F2. The F1 battle was left to NZ champ Dennis Charlett and Lee Munro after Dillion Telford packed up early due to a big crash in practice. Lee challenged hard but Dennis showed his talent by winning both the F1 and MotoEuro on his Ducati 1198. Australian Royce Rowe dominated the F2 & Superstock Ltd and was a treat to watch on the beautifully prepared Ducati. Another NZ champ, young Lewis Dray, rode the BEARS club KTM RC390 to a creditable second in the Lightweight class. A feature on Sunday was the BEARS TT – a team race between the Aussies and Kiwis with riders paired up based on lap times. Woodley on pole made an early mistake and left the win to Kiwi Pete Buss. There were many dices throughout the field but the Kiwis managed to keep the trophy at home. All-in-all a fantastic weekend and very entertaining for the 2000-strong crowd. I was one of the 165 competitors and I think I can say that we all had a brilliant time as well.

Historic meetings provide a snapshot in time. Riders, spectators and even the bikes get to once again hold some of the glory of their golden years.

T

he annual Barry Sheene Festival of Speed also features the trans-Tasman challenge, an event reciprocated between Australia and New Zealand, at Sydney Motorsports Park and in New Zealand in October each year. Kiwi Rider’s ad man Todd Sutherland, who will admit to never having had any golden years, went to the recent ‘Barry Sheene Festival of Speed’ in Sydney to take in those that did and, for many, always will. While you can always go to a MotoGP meeting to see the top bikes and riders in the world, access to the bikes and riders gets ever more limited. The 80s and 90s were a special time for many of us. The American and Australian riders were a dominant force in Grand Prix racing. Riders like Freddie Spencer, who, in 1983, was the youngest 500 Grand Prix (MotoGP) champion ever, were the

Valentino Rossi’s and Marc Marquez’s of their time. Twenty plus years on and we were all queing up to have a chat and meet these legends of yesteryear. The 2016 Barry Sheene Festival of Speedf featured greats such as Freddie Spencer, Kevin Schwantz, Kork Ballington, Kevin Magee, Graeme Crosby, Chris Vermeulen, Jeremy McWilliams and Steve Parrish. As with any of these meetings there was also a tremendous array of historic machinery. The 2016 New Zealand team riders were comprised of team captain Kevin Grey, David Freeman, Pete Byers, Terry Martin, Todd Sutherland, Phil Oades, Damian Mackie, Duncan Coutts, Andy Skelton, Patric Nussbum, Colin Buckly, Robbie Shorter and James McIntosh who were buoyed by a great bunch of supporters. Even the photographers got roped into helping team the Kiwi team pull off an unlikely victory. We’ll bring you a full report in the next issue of KR. KIWI RIDER

Michelins Shine in The more things change, the more they stay the same. Except in MotoGP, if the Qatar season-opening night race on March 20 is any indication.

S

ure the season started with Valentino Rossi sniping at team-mate Jorge Lorenzo as if it were still 2015, then Lorenzo won the race with Rossi fourth – an almost carbon-copy of the last race of 2015. But there was much more happening at Losail on the outskirts of Doha, and it wasn’t trade talks. First, new electronics: all MotoGP teams are using the same Magneti-Marelli electronic control units (ECU) and ‘unified software.’ Second was the 22 litre fuel limit for all bikes (midway between last year’s Factory and Open class limits). And finally the switch of tyre suppliers: after seven years of racing solely Bridgestones, riders had to get used to Michelin rubber, and a switch from 16.5 to 17-inch wheels. Pundits predicted these changes would slow things down, especially after a spate of front-end slides and crashes in early Michelin testing. After qualifying, which saw Lorenzo’s eightyear-old 1m 53.927s pole record remain intact after he took pole with a 1m 54.543s lap, the pundits were confident in their assessment, and took further comfort in this view from the rider’s divergent choice of tyre compounds for the race. But the result turned those predictions upside down. Lorenzo made a late switch

Words: Michael Esdaile / Photo: Yamaha Racing

to a soft compound rear tyre (with a hard compound front), and won the race, breaking Casey Stoner’s 2008 lap record of 1m 55.153s with a 1m 54.927s effort on the 20th of 22 laps. Not only that, he shattered Rossi’s year old race record by 7.265 seconds. Until last year, the race record for 22 laps was 42 minutes 36.587 seconds. That was set by Casey Stoner in 2008 on an 800cc Ducati, on Bridgestones, before control tyres were introduced. Last year Valentino trimmed that to 42m 35.717s. This year, Lorenzo did the 22 laps in 42m 28.452s. Second placed Andrea Dovisiozo was just two seconds behind on the factory Ducati, using a soft front/soft rear tyre combination while Marc Marquez used a hard front/ hard rear combo on his Repsol Honda to finish third, just two tenths of a second back from the Ducati man. Rossi opted for a hard front, medium rear tyre combination and came home fourth, a tenth of a second behind the Honda. So, the top four on a variety of Michelin compounds all within 2.4 seconds and all under the race record – in finishing fourth Rossi was almost 6.3 seconds faster than his previous year’s winning effort. No doubt about it, Michelin came through this test with flying colours and it looks like MotoGP this year is going to be closer than ever. We can’t wait for more.

Self-confessed MotoGP virgin, Robert Cochrane headed to Phillip Island for his first look at the GP carnival. What could be better than popping his cherry with the Kiwi Rider MotoGP Tour? Words: Robert Cochrane Photos: Robert Cochrane/Michael Esdaile

I

’ve been struggling to find the words to describe the flashes of emotion and euphoria that came over me as I sat in the open grandstand at ‘Siberia’ corner and witnessed the greatest Grand Prix race so far this century. It was amazing. My first time at Phillip Island and the racing was every bit as good as the original GPs held there in 1989 and 1990, except that instead of shrieking, skitterish 500cc two-strokes, we were watching screaming 1000cc four-strokes. Quite simply, the 2015 Australian MotoGP race was the greatest motorsport event I have ever witnessed live. And that was after an absolutely sensational Moto3 race where the younger riders flung their 250cc single cylinder racers around with

incredible energy and enthusiasm – with some getting just a bit too enthusiastic and landing in the gravel virtually at our feet! I had watched qualifying for all three GP classes from the same grandstand the day before and was super impressed with Marc Marquez posting such a fast time right out of the gate, and then he bettered it later in the session to hold out the hardcharging Ducati of Andrea Iannone. As good as Marquez’ qualifying time was, I was stunned to see it was still almost half a second outside Jorge Lorenzo’s MotoGP pole record, set in 2013 not long after the track had been resurfaced. The Yamaha man must have been on fire that day! In the MotoGP race, with so many position changes for second and third places, it was non-stop action. While KIWI RIDER

Most kits come with carry bags to make it super easy. So get a Gryyp, and don’t get caught in the rain waiting for the tow truck. If you like your touring bikes fast, extremely capable and chock-full of electronic rider aids, KTM’s Super Duke GT could be for you.

s the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT makes a mockery of yet another line of Mallorcan traffic choking up the Mediterranean island’s mountain roads – deploying the astonishing acceleration from its 170bhp, 1301cc V-twin motor to momentarily suspend the laws of physics – it could make a genuine claim to be the world’s fastest, besthandling, most sophisticated and most expensive sports tourer. Twenty years ago, sports tourers wrung extra value from obsolete sportsbike motors by re-purposing them. But conventional sports tourers with semi-sporty riding positions – like Honda’s VFR800F and Triumph’s Sprint ST – have long been superseded by adventure bikes, which basically do the same job but with longer suspension for better ride quality, an upright riding position to combat aching limbs, and a big tank for more miles. And with advancing suspension technology and on road tyres, they’re good at going round corners too. But the 1290 GT isn’t an adventure bike with long legs and a tall seat. It uses an almost identical engine and steel tube trellis frame as the 1290 Super Duke R naked streetbike, with the added long-range practicality of a half fairing, larger tank and

better ergonomics. Plus the GT has semi-active WP suspension, lean-angle-based traction control, engine modes, cornering ABS, cornering headlights, cruise control and a quickshifter. Thus the result is a top-spec, hellishly rapid, sporty-handling sports tourer which KTM says is at home in the corners as it is on the straights (if you asked KTM’s engineers, they’d probably smile and say they prefer corners. The company motto is, after all, ‘Ready To Race’, not ‘Ready To Bore’). So although the GT counts BMW’s S1000XR and Ducati’s 1200 S Multistrada as rivals (semi-active, similar engine performance and price), the sportier KTM would give those two a hard time on a twisty road, or on a track. It’s absolutely more sports than adventure. In fact with flat bars, low seat and upright riding position, the 1290 GT is closer to Kawasaki’s Z1000SX and Suzuki’s GSXS1000FA – but neither of them get near the KTM’s level of spec or performance. Or price, for that matter. The 1290 GT, really, is in a class of one. Nothing else offers its level of high performance, sports handling and long-range convenience. At low speed the slim GT is lovely to handle (though not as slender between the knees as expected) with agile steering, low seat and good balance. The engine chugs smoothly without the usual big V-twin lumpiness, and is civilised for a 170bhp motor. KIWI RIDER

Big and more than a little opulent, Moto Guzzi’s new Eldorado melds classic and modern styling into a worthy successor to the Eldorado name.

“E

ldorado – unforgettable elegance has returned”, so the Moto Guzzi advertising reads. And surely there is a lot of truth in that statement when laying eyes on the lovely classical lines of Guzzi’s new Eldorado. History buffs will likely know that the original Eldorado was created from the 1972 LAPD California 850cc machine, but refined for a more luxurious use and feel; for the most discerning of gentleman rider. The name El Dorado itself conjures up images of grandeur, be it the fabled South American city of great riches and opportunity, or the literal meaning of ‘gilded place’. Yes, it’s hard to imagine a better, or more opulent,

name to give the new Moto Guzzi (or any bike for that matter), this time based on the 1400cc California platform. In design and execution the Eldorado is not solely a classic machine, but a blend of modern technologies and old style elegance. The big Guzzi has most of the electronic and safety features that one expects from a 2016 machine, like quality Brembo brakes with ABS, three levels of fully integrated traction control under the ‘MGCT’ banner and, lastly, cruise control. Combine this with the whitewall tyres, spoked wheels, masses of chrome and the Guzzi truly is an excellent mix of old and new. The air- and oil-cooled 1380cc, 90-degree V-twin has four valves per cylinder and DOHC. It has a six-speed gearbox which transfers the peak 96hp (71.6kW) produced at 6500rpm to the

T

he term ‘race-replica’ is very much over used. Take the one in the pictures here as a prime example. But it’s not as it first appears. Back in the very late-80s the Japanese were busy building ever more impressive four-stroke 750cc machines for the sole purpose of winning races. The old notion that if you won a race on the Sunday you sold bikes on the Monday was probably somewhere behind the development. All four Japanese manufacturers were in on the act with their then current hot shot 750 street models. This was fine for a while and race series like the old MCN Super stock races were built around the fact you could race a street bike at national level. Sure, there were allowances to play around with the suspension a bit and fit a race exhaust, but basically the spectators could pay their entrance fee and watch established racing names like Haslam, Grant & Co race against the new kids on the block (the likes of Rymer, Nation and Irons) on bikes they could buy themselves. This proved hugely popular in the UK and before long the manufacturers realised their collective futures lay in four-stroke racing, rather than the twostrokes that filled Grands Prix. The World SuperBike series was still a few years away but already homologation specials were being designed and built; these

Almost ten years in the making, Angela Bruce and Mike Britton finally fulfilled the dream of riding motorcycles in Cuba.

C

uba had been calling for many years. No one particular thing about the place, more the combination of the music, the turbulent history, the mix of people and cultures, and the sheer mystery of it all. For us to justify travel to new destinations it needs to be combined with a recce trip for a potential motorcycle tour. So, over the last eight or nine years we have spent a good deal of time researching (not easy when it is a country as ‘off the grid’ as Cuba has been, and still is to some degree) the possibility of a tour in Cuba on Cuban-based motorbikes, but our searches uncovered none that we could legally hire within Cuba. None. Not even old Soviet clunkers, or East German two-strokes. This was due to the strict control the Cuban communist government has on all business. In 2013 a Cuban friend living in Mongolia

raised our hopes when he assured us that we could now hire bikes. He had recently been back to Cuba and hired a bike as transport. Feeling hopeful in October 2013, we flew into Havana to check it out. Eight days later we left, our tails between our legs... defeated. It wasn’t legal; our friend had been able to hire a privately owned bike because he was Cuban, but this opportunity was not available to us as foreigners. What made it worse was that after only eight days there, Cuba had really got under our skin. We were enamoured with the place, but the vision of running a motorbike tour there was shattered - Cuba by bike seemed an impossible dream. Eleven months after returning from Cuba we received an email that changed everything. A motorcycle tour company had opened in Cuba and they wanted us to be their New Zealand partners. We were ecstatic, but there was even more exciting news – the bikes were late-model Harley KIWI RIDER

It’s ‘Mr Versatile’ versus the rising star from the south by Andy McGechan

T

alk about being Mr Versatile. Bay of Plenty Suzuki rider Brad Groombridge won the opening round of four in the New Zealand Cross-country Championships near Huntly in February and then he went on to wrap up the four-round New Zealand Motocross Championships by finishing fifth overall in the glamour MX1 class in mid March. Now the Taupo man is tackling the New Zealand Enduro Championships and, once again, he’s among the leading riders. Groombridge is in first-equal position – although first on the count-back rule – after the opening two rounds of this season’s New Zealand Enduro Championships over the Easter Weekend holiday. MC2 Suzuki Racing Team rider Groombridge and Christchurch’s Hamish Macdonald (Sherco SE-R300i) shared the spoils over the two days of racing, the Saturday, March 26, series opener in the Greta Valley, near Christchurch, won by Macdonald, with Groombridge finishing runner-up, and Easter Monday’s second round near Mosgiel won by Groombridge, with Macdonald taking the No.2 spot on that occasion. Howick’s Liam Draper (Husqvarna FE250) finished each of the two events third overall. With three rounds still to come, all of them in the North Island, it’s probably too early to be lining up the trophy engraver just yet, but certainly Groombridge, Macdonald and Draper must already rate among the most likely candidates to take home the silverware this season. Fourth overall after two rounds is Titirangi’s Callan May (Yamaha YZ250X) – who finished fifth on Saturday and fourth on Monday – with Coatesville’s Sam Greenslade (Kawasaki KX250F, who finished 7-5) rounding out the top five. With riding conditions at the weekend described by many as “perfect”, with virtually no dust and little mud, the riders were able to perform at their best, tackling the rugged terrain with confidence as well as skill. For multi-talented Groombridge, the enduro scene is also becoming more familiar to him and that can mean just one thing, he’s probably going to get even better as the enduro series progresses. He met his match in Macdonald on the Saturday, but turned the tables at round two on Easter Monday and with the series now heading closer to Groombridge’s

home turf, the racing’s only going to get tougher for all of Groombridge’s rivals. “I crashed twice on Monday, but didn’t lose too much time,” said Groombridge. “I’ve done a lot of riding lately and I’m now able to apply different riding skills to the different codes. “I was penalised 20 seconds on Saturday for not having a headlight on my motocross bike that was deemed to be up-to-standard, but I rectified that for Monday’s event. It actually didn’t make any difference in the outcome, it just meant that Hamish (Macdonald) beat me by 26 seconds (over the whole day) on Saturday instead of just six seconds.” “I’m riding the smaller Suzuki RM-Z250 for the enduro series, instead of my

usual RM-Z450 because it’s a bit more nimble and manoeuvrable in the tight trees.” The various championship class leaders after two of five rounds are Helensville’s Tom Buxton (expert under200cc two-stroke class), Taupo’s Brad Groombridge (expert under-300cc four-stroke), Christchurch’s Hamish Macdonald (expert over-200cc twostroke), Hamilton’s Chris Power (over300cc four-stroke) and Tokoroa’s Sean Clarke (expert veterans, over 40 years). The national enduro series continues with round three near Wellington on April 9, round four at Waimiha on June 4 and, finally, it all wraps up near Tokoroa on June 5. KIWI RIDER

COOPER FENDS OFF THE

The 2016 NZ Motocross champs has wrapped up after an adrenaline-filled season.

B

ay of Plenty’s Cody Cooper has now made it four national MX1 title wins in a row and five in total after another gripping four-round series wrapped up in Taupo at the end of March. The now 32-year-old Cooper first won the national MX1 title in 2011 (then riding a Suzuki) and followed on with MX1 title wins in 2013 (Suzuki), 2014 (Honda) and 2015 (Honda), before claiming his fifth MX1 title this year. The man from Mount Maunganui took his Honda Racing Team CRF450 to successfully defend his MX1 crown at the final round of the 2016 New Zealand Motocross Championships at Taupo’s sandy Digger McEwen Motorcycle Park by brilliantly fending off stern challenges from two Australian

riders, both of whom were former Grand Prix stars in Europe, and a crop of very fast fellow Kiwis as well. Cooper started the final round just three points in front of Gold Coast rider Todd Waters (MC2 Suzuki Racing Team RM-Z450) and five ahead of Kyogle’s Dean Ferris (Altherm JCR Yamaha YZ450F), the two Australians who had threatened most to end Cooper’s long reign as New Zealand’s No.1 motocross racer. Fourth best in the points at the start of Taupo’s finale was Queenstown’s Scott Columb (Whyteline Kawasaki), with Taupo’s Brad Groombridge (MC2 Suzuki Racing Team) rounding out the top five. Only the two visiting Australians had a realistic chance of overcoming Cooper and it was these three riders who again

AUSSIE CHALLENGE Words & Photos: Andy McGetchan

dominated proceedings at Taupo. When Ferris won the first of three MX1 races that day, the dynamics changed remarkably and Ferris had gone from third, and five points adrift of Cooper, to second and just two points behind. When Cooper won race two from Ferris, with Waters again finishing third, the Kiwi hero had snatched back the initiative and restored his advantage to five points. That made the mathematics painfully simple: even if Ferris won the third and final race of the day, second place would be enough for Cooper to keep his crown for a fourth consecutive season. And that’s exactly how it panned out, Ferris winning comfortably while Cooper cruised home in second, all the

time watching over his shoulder for a late charge and possible “spoiling” attack from Waters. The threat from Waters never came and it was a calm and relaxed Cooper who crossed the finish line second and sealed up the title again. “The second race win in Taupo is what won the title for me and I got the job done,” said Cooper. “It gave me the five-point buffer I needed. It was a battle though. Dean (Ferris) passed me in that race and I had to fight back. “There was no backing down from me today,” said the motocross professional. “I might have had to take a pay cut if I didn’t win,” he laughed. The other two championship classes were a little more cut KIWI RIDER

Not too much and not too little. Jock and John have been getting to grips with Husqvarna’s Goldilocks enduro machine.

H

usqvarna’s 2016 FE350 is a bike for the masses. It’s a machine that all levels of competent rider can enjoy and comfortably have a crack at using its quite remarkable capabilities. I’ve come to view this bike as the modern day Honda XR350 and I mean that as a genuine compliment to both brands. The old XR, while being short lived, was a serious trailbike/enduro machine and bridged the gap nicely between the XR600 and XR250. So, in much the same vein the FE350 holds the middle ground for those who want a little more punch than a 250 can offer, but a little less intimidation factor that comes from the 450 or bigger machines. For this year Husqvarna has only made minor chassis changes to the FE. The front axle has been reduced in size from 26mm to 22mm, with the associated trail and offset changes because the axle is slightly relocated. The triple clamp offset is now 22mm and the steering head angle of 26.5 degrees remains the same as last year. The 4CS forks have some damping improvements too and all changes have been made to enhance front end cornering grip and handling in general. New lower fork guards that no longer wrap right around the fork leg are also fitted. The discs are new from GRK but remain the same diameter. The engine receives minor lubrication and gearbox updates to improve the already excellent reliability. Riding the Husky 350 feels much the same as last year. It is quite a big machine that is tall in the saddle and generally roomy with nice ergos – and this is perhaps its only real downfall for shorter riders (along with the not so light 108.3kg weight with zero fuel in the decent-sized 9.5 litre tank). The handling is predictable, but it rides high at the rear which affects the balance, particularly

have to admit to being staggered. The little KTM 125 EXC I was riding was proving to be a true weapon. It was hitting lines that I hadn’t hit in, probably, 20 years. There were two main reasons for this, one it is very light and two, it’s a two-stroke. But, before I explain that, a little scene setting is required. The 125 EXC and I were deep in Riverhead forest at the Waitemata Club trail ride after heavy rain and it was slicker than whale

snot on a deep sea oil slick. If 30-plus years of off-road riding in Riverhead has taught me anything it is this – in the wet, riding conditions are somewhat challenging... and a light weight, great handling bike is your friend. Now, with age my riding speed has become glacially slow, but you don’t forget everything, experience still counts – it just takes the right bike for some of the old skills to re-emerge. The KTM 125 EXC is that bike. Right, to explain that earlier sentence; a light bike is great in difficult conditions

because it gives the rider line options that just can’t be taken on a heavier bike – try riding along two thirds of the way up the side of a deep rut on a XR650 and you will understand that it’s not quite as simple as it sounds. And the two-stroke part is great in slick going too because it has little or no engine braking effect and they get fabulous traction when ridden correctly. The lack of engine braking is also helpful because you can flow into really slick turns maintaining better rear wheel grip that helps you get up on to the edge of ruts without falling in. And the milder initial power of a good two-stroke gets better grip when the throttle is first cracked open. I apologise if this sounds like a two-stroke love fest, but they really are

awesome in certain conditions. The 124.8 cc liquid-cooled six speed engine has a 54mm bore and a 54.5mm stroke plus, of course, a power valve. It is kick-start only which I think is sensible. The ignition is made by Kokusan which has made excellent two-stroke ignition systems for decades. This engine is a grunty little bugger with surprisingly good torque. On the whole 30km+ trail loop I only needed first gear once and this was on a particularly nasty, steep switchback climb that was littered with tree roots and fallen riders. None the less, the EXC battled easily to the top carting this 100kg+ pilot, no trouble at all. Traction delivered by the little motor is

Taking the bike on an overseas tour, or buying or selling overseas? Want someone who knows bikes and knows how they should be handled?

Bailey_MAY16.indd 1 31/03/16 11:37 AM Then call us-we have years of experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US.... Change seasons, change gear The change in seasons doesn’t just require a change of wardrobe. It needs a shift in mindset too. Difficult weather conditions can be tiring, distracting and slow your reaction times. So here are some tips to cut the risks and increase your enjoyment of Autumn riding.

Keep dry

Wind chill means wet clothing is bad news on a bike, sucking more heat away with every extra km/h. Your protective leathers might keep out a light shower, but beyond that they’re hopeless. Purpose-designed waterproof, breathable gear is best, with a fully breathable liner. And here’s a tip: keep a pair of disposable rubber gloves under your seat in case you get caught in the rain without waterproof gloves. They’ll keep your hands dry and much warmer.

Stay off road markings and shiny tarmac

In the wet grip levels vary enormously. Painted road markings that you didn’t think twice about in the dry can now cause a skid or wheel-spin. Give yourself room for error. And, wherever possible, change your line to avoid areas of reduced grip.

Riding at night

Shorter days make riding at night or in lower light more likely. Keep your headlight glass and helmet visor clean. When an

oncoming vehicle’s lights shine right at you, make your eyes follow the left of the road until you can look past the vehicle without being dazzled. Slow down if necessary.

Layer up

The key is to trap a thick, insulating layer of warm air between your body and the outer, wind-proof layer of clothing. Choose gear with close-fitting openings and covered zippers, and avoid loose garments where cold air will sneak in and push out the warmth. Keep your extremities warm with insulated boots and gloves, or heated clothing.

Machine minded

There’s a lot you can do to your bike to prepare for Autumn riding. Make sure tyres have plenty of tread, no damage and are correctly inflated. And it’s a perfect time to set your suspension correctly in terms of sag, preload and damping (check out our stories on suspension set-up online).

BRITTEN 21 YEARS ON Barber Festival, the largest classic festival in the USA, display nine Brittens

John Britten, the man behind the legend

S

There seems always to be a debate about what constitutes a classic, or more precisely a classic motorcycle. In reality it depends on the situation; are you entering a bike in a competition, in which case there will be stipulated rules on year of manufacture, or are you simply making a value judgement based on your own evaluation?

ome motorcycles are considered classics from the moment they leave the manufacturer, and one of these must surely be the Britten. John Britten died twenty-one years ago. Many believe that Britten motorcycles died with him, but this of course isn’t true. He left ten motorcycles of such extraordinarily advanced technology, and design, that they became instant classics. Manufacturers around the world were taking note of his innovations long after his death. We are all familiar with Kiwi ingenuity, and the ability to create wonders with very limited resources, and there is no better example of this than John Britten. A look at his childhood heroes is confirmation; Richard Pearse, the pioneer aviator who successfully flew, and landed, a powered heavier-than-air machine in March 1903, nine months before the Wright brothers first flight. Bill Hamilton, mastermind of the Hamilton jet boat, said “I don’t claim to have invented marine jet propulsion. The honour belongs to a gentleman named Archimedes who lived some years ago” [287-212 BC]. What Hamilton did was produce the first modern jetboat by refining an ancient idea. Bruce McLaren, a brilliant

racing driver began designing his own cars. The result is the McLaren Formula One dynasty. And of course Burt Munro, who hand-built a world-beating motorcycle in his Invercargill shed. None of these men invented what they produced, they refined something that was already there. In the twenty-one years since John’s passing, the Britten has achieved even greater world-wide recognition. A recent accolade came last year at the Barber Festival, the largest classic motorcycle event held anywhere in the U.S.A. To honour John Britten’s legacy, the founder of the Festival, and the Barber Motorcycle Museum, George Barber, wanted as many Brittens on display as he could get. He managed to assemble nine of the ten built. A remarkable feat considering they are spread all over the world. The only model not there was number ten, which at last check was in a glass case in Las Vegas. Jason McEwen tested it, but it was never raced. During the Festival five Brittens took to the track. An eye witness said “The wail of even one Britten, with its 999cc quad-cam V-twin pumping out 166bhp is incredible, but to hear five at once was utterly magical. It was the experience of a lifetime, and everyone watching knew it.”
