300hp Kawasaki H2R Kawasaki has shaken up the motorcycling status quo at this year’s Intermot show, held in Cologne. The H2R, alluding to the H2 of the 70s, is a track-only 1000cc machine which has a super-charger and makes within a gnat’s sniff of 300hp. Michael Esdaile looks at the new bike and charts Kawasaki’s other seminal machines.

Roost zone news Yamaha Far North Adventure Ride dates announced.

All the best routes...

Secondary Schools MX champs.

Kiwis shake up Aussie MX.

It’s show time! Roll up, roll up to the motorcycling big top! Yes folks, it’s that time of year when the new motorcycle circus rolls into town with new a big-top full of bike to tempt us. The 2014 Intermot Show was held in Cologne on the day we went to press with this issue. And boy, has there been some excitment. Kawasaki has been hinting and teasing with a run of video teasers for a new bike over the last month. Well, the covers were taken off at the show and Kawasaki has, quite literally, blown out the rule book with its H2R. This track-only machine is quoted as having 300PS, or 296hp from its 1000cc supercharged engine. Yes, super-charged. So all the benefits of a turbo but without the lag,

which turbo’d engines often suffer. A roadlegal version is to be announced at the Milan Show next month. Turn to page 10 for new bike highlights and page 24 for more on the H2R. Harley Davidson has revamped both the Road Glide and Street Glide for 2015 with new stereos, one-touch luggage and stiffer front ends - all good news. Turn to page 32 for more. Michael Esdaile has fallen for Honda’s NC750S, which combines torque and convenience. In the Roost Zone we’ve got the latest MX machines for 2015 from both Kawasaki and Yamaha. Test pilot Sam Greenslade has been getting to grips with the 2015 KX250F and KX450F doing passable impressions of an F15 pilot... Meanwhile Jock McLauchlan has been across the Ditch to Australia where he had the opportunity to ride the whole Yamaha MX range in one go - including the two-strokes and fourstrokes. Exciting times. Enjoy the mag. BEN WILKINS

NEWS

INTERMOT SHOW - 2015 LOOKING GOOD The Intermot Show in Cologne has thrown up a heap of new bikes for 2015. Released just as Kiwi Rider went to press, we’ve shoe-horned the most interesting of the bikes which had been released by the time we just had to say “no more”. Super-chargers (see page 24…), GSX-R1000-powered streetfighters and café racers all feature for 2015. It’s going to be an exciting year for motorcycling, that’s for sure.

SUZUKI

offers “smooth throttle response and immediate, controlled acceleration.” This is the old long-stroke design using a 59mm stroke with a 73.4mm bore, but re-tuned for “real world riding, without detracting the raw power of the GSX-R1000.” The bike is fitted with threemode traction control to tone things down when riders get too heavy-handed. In addition to the near-naked GSX-S1000, Suzuki is offering a faired GSX-S1000F/ABS, which is pretty much identical apart from the bodywork.

GSX-S1000/F Suzuki showed up at the 2014 INTERMOT show at Cologne with a completely different take on 1000cc four cylinder performance. The new bike is unmistakably a street-fighter and its model name is GSX-S1000/ABS. The frame is completely new with twin alloy spars running direct from steering head to swing-arm pivot and is designed to provide high rigidity and low weight. Suzuki says the frame is lighter than that of the current GSX-R1000 while the swing-arm is “derived straight from the current GSX-R1000” and provides “great road holding performance and Superbike looks.” While the riding position is designed for “sporting comfort” with a “sporty yet upright riding position that reduces rider fatigue and increases visibility.” The seat height is a lowish 815mm and the 17 litre fuel tank is tapered at the rear to provide an easy interface for the rider. Suspending the GSX-S1000 street-fighter is a set of 43mm KYB inverted forks with compression

and rebound damping adjustability along with provision for spring pre-load adjustment. At the rear is a single shock offering spring pre-load and rebound damping adjustment. Brakes are 310mm discs on floating mounts with Brembo monobloc radial-mount calipers with four 32mm pistons – same as used on the current GSX-R1000. The difference is the GSX-S1000 is fitted with a Bosch Antilock Brake System (ABS) which monitors wheel speed 50 times per wheel rotation. Powering the new Suzuki street-fighter is re-worked 2005 GSX-R1000 K5 motor which

DL650XT Suzuki has made a more Adventure focused 650 V-strom for 2015. Called the DL650XT, it rides on wire-spoke rather than cast alloy wheels, gets a hydraulic rear spring pre-load adjuster and is given the new DL1000 V-Strom front styling with a ‘beak’ front guard. The new nose fairing is fitted with an adjustable wind screen and Suzuki says it has fitted the transmission with a taller, overdrive sixth (top) gear to “assure comfortable cruising on freeways.” Suzuki is also making a wide array of accessories available for the DL650XT, including top and side luggage cases, heated hand grips, sump guard, centre stand and LED fog lamps.

GSX-R1000

KIWI RIDER

To commemorate its return to MotoGP competition in 2015, Suzuki has blessed the 2015 GSX-R1000 with a Suzuki Racing Blue colour scheme. It has also fitted anti-lock brakes as standard equipment and Suzuki says “it’s ready to reclaim its Top Performer status and Own The Racetrack.” The ABS system monitors wheel speeds to match stopping power to available traction and the front brakes feature Brembo radial-mount monobloc calipers. Powering the GSX-R1000 is the same shorter stroke 999cc 74.5mm x 57.3mm bore and stroke motor that “brings enhanced throttle response across the entire rpm range. Optimised camshaft profiles for great racing potential were developed using proven MotoGP racing engine technology,” Suzuki says. The chassis is the same class-leading, twin beam alloy frame used since 2009.

In the cleverest piece of internet marketing in the history of motorcycling, Kawasaki whetted the appetite of the motorcycle press, motorcycle websites, blog sites and other ‘social media’ with a series of ten video presentations for the new Ninja H2 in the build up to its Intermot Show launch. Michael Esdaile takes a look at Kawasaki’s big hitters.

T

he internet campaign was launched on September 1 with a press release from Kawasaki along with the first in a series of teaser ‘Built Beyond Belief’ videos. This was the final phase of a programme which started many years before. This programme was designed to showcase Kawasaki’s world-leading technology in several fields – something the videos clearly highlighted – and to underline the fact that Kawasaki Heavy Industries is a still a heavy hitter in shipbuilding, bridge building, tunnelling, aviation, railway rolling stock and high speed trains – as well as motorcycles. As well as using the promotional videos around its new ultra-high performance motorcycle to showcase the true scale of

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, the development of the Ninja H2 may also be seen in some quarters as an irreverent “up yours” to the MotoGP fraternity, which Kawasaki chose to walk away from in January 2009, even to the point of paying a financial penalty to do so. “We took the final decision not to continue in MotoGP,” said Kawasaki’s Katsuhiro Sato at the time. “It’s something we have been considering since mid-December (2008). In the current economic climate and unless the situation improves it is difficult to say if we will return.” However, Kawasaki has had no problem finding the budget to compete in the Superbike World Championship and has signed Englishman Tom

Kawasaki revealed a track-only version of its new supercharged motorcycle on the opening day of the Cologne Show. Called Ninja H2R, it produces close to 300 horsepower, displaces 998cc and showcases Kawasaki technology with input from the Gas Turbine & Machinery Company, Aerospace Company and Corporate Technology Division. This carbon-fibre winged wonder is the most powerful Kawasaki yet built, eclipses MotoGP machines and will be built to order in one model run. Word is there will be one batch built, and that will be it.

THE POWER OF

The inaugural World 500 Championship was won by a laiddown parallel twin. That was in 1949. Sixty-two years later Honda re-discovered the concept and launched the NC700. Two years later it has given the NC twin more punch by boring it out to make a 750.

W

ith the success of the third of its New Concept models in the form of the CB500 parallel twins, Honda had a bit of a dilemma. What to do with the earlier released 670cc NC700s? It is not as if these were not successful in Europe. By reducing the power slightly Honda had been able to meet the European A2 motorcycle licence requirements with the 700, which state: “motorcycles of a power not exceeding 35kW and with a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.2kW/kg and not derived from a vehicle of more than double its power.” Honda could have also reduced the cylinder bore size slightly and thus enabled the NC700s to meet Australasian Learner Approved Motorcycle (LAM) requirements. One of the differences between the LAM regulations and Euro A2 licences is the LAM regulations mandate engines of no more than 660cc displacement. So by reducing the displacement of the NC700 by just 5cc per cylinder, it would

have been able to meet both LAM and Euro A2 requirements. However, two years after the release of the NC700 in 2011, Honda launched the CB500 twins. These were designed to meet all global learner motorcycle licence requirements and had met ready acceptance in the market. So rather than keep crowding into the CB500’s territory, Honda took another tack with the 700, increasing the engine bore size from 73 to 77mm which, with the 80mm stroke, gives a displacement of 745cc. The bigger motor produces more torque – up from 62 to 68Nm, at 4750rpm – while peak power increases from 38.1 to 40.3kW, at 6250rpm. With the CB500 selling strongly, Honda decided not to make a slightly restricted NC700 to meet the Euro A2 requirements. It decided instead to differentiate the NCs from the CB500s. Honda also decided that with the additional torque, the NC750 would be able to pull taller

gearing, so it dropped two teeth off the rear sprocket to make the overall gearing six per cent taller. Apparently Honda also found the bigger pistons produced more engine vibration so it fitted a second balance shaft in the NC’s engine to quell this, but without affecting the muted but distinctive power pulsing of the 90 degree crankpin phasing, which gives the parallel twin the same firing intervals as a conventional 90 degree V-twin. With the tall gearing, the NC750 feels somewhat similar to the late 1970’s 850 Moto Guzzis and 900 BMW boxers with its leisurely top gear acceleration.

Noise

Rounding out the engine changes, Honda has revised the muffler to reduce the back pressure of the bigger exhaust pulses for a more ‘characterful’ beat. That’s Honda-speak for a slightly more authoritative (noisier) exhaust. After riding the bigger displacement NC750 away from Blue Wing Honda, the motor’s greater pulling power was immediately noted. At the same time we felt that with the revised overall gearing, first gear is now a touch too tall. Get the bike rolling in first gear, take your hand off the throttle and it will idle along in first – at an indicated 13km/h. That’s idle! The consequence of this is that you are now using the clutch more in low speed manoeuvres than with the earlier 670cc motor. Naturally, by raising the final drive gearing, you affect the overall ratio of every gear. This means that at the legal open road limit in New Zealand, the NC750 is ticking over at 3000rpm, with another 3500rpm before redline. To put this into some sort of perspective, the 798cc BMW F800R is turning 4000rpm at 100km/h in sixth gear, 1000rpm more than the Honda at the same road speed. We understand Honda’s thinking here: lower revs at open road speeds should result in lower fuel consumption. However, our preference, having ridden the bike for a couple of weeks, is that when it raised the overall gearing, Honda should have also lowered the internal ratios of first and second gears to make the bike more user friendly around town. For the wide open parts of the South Island, the stock gearing will be fine, but on the generally tighter, windier roads in the North Island, we think fitting the NC700 rear sprocket to the 750 may be the ticket. As it is, we noted we were using fifth gear a lot more on the 750 than we ever did on the 700. In pretty much every other respect the NC750 is like riding the NC700. The riding position is comfortable and upright, the motor is pleasant and lopes along in a very relaxed fashion. It is also very deceptive. When you get a bit of power pulsing at lower rpm the initial reaction is to back-shift to get the revs up a bit. Stick with it. Leave the clutch and gear lever alone and just feed in more throttle. The NC750 will pull

2014 YAMAHA FAR NORTH ADVENTURE RIDE

NEWS

F

rom its inception in 1992 the Far North Adventure Ride has covered a large portion of Northland, New Zealand. Always on the lookout for new and interesting riding terrain, Mike Britton is not shy when it comes to roping in those who know more about an area than he does. This year’s Yamaha Far North Adventure Ride, December 13-14, is no exception as Britton has cajoled Ruakaka man, Mike Able, to assist with putting together a great ride. Mike Britton elaborates, “Mike Able is just the man for the job. He and his wife Anne-Marie are, very conveniently, the managers of the Ruakaka Holiday Park from where the event will be based. Mike has been a dirt and adventure rider for very long time. He knows the area well and will be assisted by another Northland local, Mike Johanson. So we, the three Miketeers, promise a brilliant weekend of adventure riding, socialising with fellow riders, and plenty of tasty food to keep us all going.” Visit www.adventurerides.co.nz for more information.

YAMAHA COROMANDEL ADVENTURE RIDE POSTPONED Due to a date clash, with the Colville Connection MTB (mountain biking event) being held over the same weekend and in the same upper Coromandel area, Britton Adventures has postponed this adventure ride event. In the interest of rider safety, both adventure riders and MTB riders, Mike and Angela have decided to find another suitable date to the adventure ride. As soon as we know the date we’ll let you know.

ALL THE BEST ROUTES At the final dinner (held at Waitangi Copthorne) of the 2014 Yamaha Safari, Mike Britton, of Britton Adventures, announced the 2015 event would move to the deep-south – The Yamaha Great Southern Safari. This announcement prompted adventure rider and Invercargill man, Don Moir, to get up and offer his assistance to the Britton Team. Having partaken in the celebratory imbibing of a few ales, Don’s speech was enthusiastic and animated. Laughter rang out around the dining room as Don promised to show all who attended the Yamaha Great Southern Safari, “All the best routes,” in the Invercargill region. Apparently unaware of his verbal gaffe Don continued to elaborate. “Invercargill has really good routes, and me and my mate Karl know where all the best routes are. So come on down to the Safari next year for some great Southland routes,” Don promised. The laughter grew louder and a few good natured heckles were added to the noise before Don realised exactly how his statements had been taken. Not in the slightest bit phased or embarrassed, he continued to expound on the fantastic adventure riding available in Southland. Starting and finishing in Gore, with the two intervening nights in Invercargill, the Yamaha Great Southern Safari will indeed showcase the magnificent scenery, and excellent tracks, trails, and backcountry roads on offer in the Southland region. As well as Don, and mate Karl Hall of Invercargill, Rick Jamieson from MCR Motorcycles in Dunedin is assisting Mike with the course. “You can’t beat local knowledge when putting together a great Safari,” said Mike “after all they know where to find all the best routes!” The 2015 Yamaha Great Southern Safari will be held on January 10-13, 2015. Visit www.adventurerides.co.nz or phone Mike on 021 284 9047.

Kawasaki KLX450R

KIWI RIDER

Not every rider wants the sharpest, lightest, latest race machinery. For those wanting reliability, solidity and a less frenetic ride, Kawasaki’s KLX450R makes a whole load of sense. Words: Jock McLauchlan / Photos: Geoff Osborne

M

ike Wilkins, the boss man at Kawasaki NZ, dropped off his personal KLX450R at KR HQ for us to put it through its paces. Mike, ever the salesman, said “It’s nicely run-in, go and give it a good hard work out; it’s a Kawasaki and will never break down... they do 300 or 400 hundred hours before we ever have to touch them. They’re a damn good bike.” Clearly, he’s biased... but he’s seen a bike or two go through Kawasaki’s workshops. In all honesty, I’ve never ridden one of these before and wasn’t completely sure what to expect, but I hoped to find a good, solid, trail bike - even though it has been several years since the bike has received any real updates. Winter riding in the Auckland area normally means heading in to sand country. Not something that has ever bothered me, because, well, the cleanup is easy and sand riding is fun. And, as it turns out, the KLX-R works very well in the sandy conditions. First up, the now old school carb fed, DOHC, liquid cooled 449cc, five-speed engine is excellent. It makes great, tractable power. It does not stall or flame out at low revs like some modern fuel-injected bikes. It is smooth from low rpm, has a strong, torquey midrange and respectable top end power. Most riding will be done in the wide, effortless midrange that is very tractable. Higher in the rev range, when the entire engine mass is spinning nicely, the motor develops a reasonably punchy feel from all the inertia. This is fun to use when launching over sand whoops. However that inertia does take a little slowing down when you need to stop in a hurry. Shifting and clutch action is great and the exhaust note is spot-on, it sounds throaty without being overly noisy. The engine is truly likeable and for its intended use it can’t be faulted. The only thing I found slightly annoying was the exhaust header pipe that my leg rubbed on when putting it forward in turns, and it does look a bit vulnerable to crash damage the way it is positioned. Handling on the KLX-R is decent, giving an excellent match for the suspension and power delivery. The steering turn-in is quite slow and the front suspension sits up nicely on 305mm of travel, while the rear end with its 315 mm of travel is not so high feeling. What this means is that the KLX-R likes to power slide around turns, while still steering well. But it has no tendency for the front to tuck under in the deep sand, and let’s be honest here... front wheel tucking in sand is a trail riders worst nightmare, particularly on a heavy-ish bike which the KLX-R is at 115kg dry (126kg fuelled). So the handling is stable and combined with the smooth, user-friendly engine, this bike will be confidence-inspiring for trail riders. The suspension action also gives lots of confidence to the KLX rider. It has a plush, progressive feel that is kind to the rider with very little harsh feedback yet still remains bottom resistant. Rebound damping controls the bike well and keeps everything in check. Front and rear the suspension is adjustable for compression and rebound damping, while the rear has spring preload and high speed compression adjustment too. Stopping is taken care of by Nissin with a twin-piston floating caliper and 250mm front disc, while out back a 240mm disc and single piston floating caliper do the business. Braking performance is good with great feel and offers all the trail rider will ever need. Ergos in general are great, the seat is comfortable with decent foam and I like the nicely-shaped Renthal skinny bars. All the hand controls and foot pedal/lever are comfortably shaped and work well. The digital dash has large digits and is easy to read. The KLX450R has genuinely surprised me. Because it is an older design I didn’t

ccording to Kawasaki, the KX design philosophy is to “put mid-level to expert riders on the top step of the podium”. Well, the KX450F has a proven track record, with a highly acclaimed engine and chassis performance, advanced technology and many industry firsts. 2015 has the 450 geting further fine-tuning, with race-oriented chassis components, revised engine tuning, and, most notably, SFF-Air TAC front forks. I have spent around 35 hours aboard a 2014 KX450F throughout the year, so I am fairly familiar with the bike. After setting the bars and levers to positions I liked them I jumped aboard the 450 and did a couple of laps to get a feel of the new bike. Straight away I noticed the bike felt a lot different to the 2014 model I was used to; different in terms of the way it tracks in and out of turns, and in its high-speed stability. The cockpit, lever action, and gripping points feel very much the same as they did on last year’s bike. Although Kawasaki has revised the piston

crown, increasing the compression ratio, and modified the ECU settings, to enhance traction, to a mere mortal like myself I noticed very little difference in the power. After those first few laps I wasn’t as comfortable as I thought I would feel. So I decided to take a look at the SFF-Air TAC forks. Firstly I checked the air pressure. There are three chambers in the right fork tube; an inner chamber, outer chamber and balance chamber. Acting as the main air spring, the inner chamber supports around 60% of the motorcycle’s weight. Then the outer chamber acts as a sub-air spring supporting the inner chamber, and finally the balance chamber provides counter-force to the inner chamber, aiding rider comfort. All three pressures turned out to be on the standard recommended settings; inner chamber 145psi, outer chamber 7psi and 130psi in the balance chamber. On these settings I found the front end was producing a knifing feeling entering corners and twitching at high speed. I had an idea the front end needing stiffening up to hold it up in the stroke. So, I raised the inner chamber to 146psi, outer chamber upped to 8psi and brought the balance chamber to 145psi. Compression and

rebound were left as is. I also added an extra 5mm of race sag – bringing it to 105mm. As soon as I hit the track again the difference was instantly noticeable. It was like riding a completely different motorcycle. The bike was very stable, the knifing feeling was eliminated and the majority of the harshness in the front end had been reduced. It really surprised me how these few, easy changes to the air pressure totally transformed the bike and gave me the exact feeling I was looking for. I know there is a lot of talk about the SFF-Air fork, some of it negative, but I would have to say I was very impressed with its performance. It is so easy to adjust, giving you all the options you need to dial the fork in how you like it. Which air pressure settings you run will really come down to you as an individual. I place a lot of pressure on the front wheel so I prefer a harder setting to hold the front end up, and that is reflected in the final fork setting I ended up with. The rear end works very well in conjunction with the new forks. The shock has had revised valve settings, aimed to improve high-speed handling but where I felt it performed best was on flat sweeping turns. There was always traction at the rear wheel. I actually felt the 450 provided greater traction than the 250F that we tested on the day. This came as something of a surprise, as I generally find the lower weight and easier-to-use power allows the 250 fourstrokes to get greater traction than the 450s.

Kawasaki has refined, tucked and tweaked both the KX250F and KX450F for 2015. Sam Greenslade, multiple NZ crosscountry champ and 2014 Dirt Guide Series winner, put them through their paces.

Taking the bike on an overseas tour, or buying or selling overseas? Want someone who knows bikes and knows how they should be handled?

Then call us-we have years of experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US.... BIKEMART DEALER PROFILE

TECHMOTO

T

here’s a new store in Auckland that caters to motorcyclists – but Techmoto’s not what you might expect. If nothing else, because it’s in the heart of Kingsland’s bar and café culture, and features a fountain at the door. Climb the stairs and you’ll find a treasuretrove of the best and cleverest bike accessories available in New Zealand, though at first it looks too small to hold that much. Owner Phil Scott is a familiar face after over two decades years in retail. Back in 1989 he and his wife, Gail, saw a gap for a shop selling high-quality motorcycle-related gear, a shop with not a single bike for sale but all the equipment you need to ride or run your machine, delivered by people who know what they’re talking about. “It’s one thing to have it, but to match what the customer needs with what the product can deliver is something else again.” Back then he also offered a no-quibble guarantee. Prices weren’t rock-bottom, “It’s important, but it isn’t everything. I’m a firm believer in the power of the internet to gather information – backed up by nuts and bolts and human beings.” Having developed industry software – and got tired of seven-day weeks – he and Gail sold up, and he subsequently managed another retail premises, eventually leaving to concentrate on recovering from heart surgery. But he felt that good, he couldn’t just sit at home – “I sometimes say I need the stress of being in business!” – hence this store. “We looked at the brands which aren’t very well served in Auckland, such as Arai and Givi, Nolan, Ventura and Spidi, and realized that there’s a gap there. I don’t know why a product like Ventura hasn’t been better represented, it’s unique. So we planned a store with a point of difference – one which stocks high-quality stuff, serviced by staff who really know the products.” And we’re not necessarily talking the pricey bits, only the best, like luggage tie-down options far better – yet not much more costly – than the simple elastic-and-hook system. And Kingsland was a deliberate choice. “We wanted somewhere close to arterial routes, easy to get to, there are motorcycle shops in close proximity and Kingsland has cafes, pubs and bars and metered parking – indeed there’s off street parking right outside on a first-come, first served basis and the metered spaces are free for ten minutes, so you can call us, we’ll have something ready for you and you can just dash in and collect it.” The shop’s a bit of a treasure trove of quality gear, with pretty much everything an adventure or road rider could want, as Phil demonstrates by taking us on a tour, starting from Bullit and Spidi protective jeans, through women’s gear,

114

KIWI RIDER

Words: Jacqui Madeline / Photos: Geoff Osborne “If we don’t have your size we’ll get it for you to try on, whether it’s textile or leather, boots or gloves – all tailored to women, not just a smaller size.” He shows us some Spidi gear that looks almost as if it’d be at home on the catwalk, let alone your bike… Then comes the Ventura wall, “We stock an example of every item, every tank bag and pack, then order the rack for your bike model.” Body armour – back protectors in all sorts of size, focus and fit – there’s even one with an adjustable-height fastening, and

a Former back protector and kidney belt that latch together for a full-length protection that lets you swivel 30 degrees at the waist, or unlatch for use separately. A customer comes in looking at Arai and Phil breaks off; he says Arai owners come in to look at Arai, everyone else just says they need a helmet. “With the Arai we can replace the lining, replace the cheek pads, even the chin strap – you can’t do that with everything.” That customer dealt with, our tour continues

with the wall of luggage for custom, sport, touring and adventure bikes from Givi, Ventura and Longride custom. A winch over the stairs got the BMW GS1200 up here that’s kitted out with every type of luggage, right down to a satnav case. That’s near the oil filters and brakes pads – “Motul, Rock Oil, SBS brake pads, Muc-Off,” and a variety of cleaners and lubes, Ventura light guards of course, puncture repair, a wide range of bike stands and tools… “We’re looking for things you might not find

in most bike shops, as many don’t like selling tools as they have a workshop. We don’t.” Now we’re passing Scoprion mufflers, after market mirrors and taking a break by the tie-down straps – some of them are pretty darn clever, get Phil to show you those Lynx hooks when you go in – batteries and chargers, cases for GPS and cell phones, a rack of windscreens and a case of heated vests, gloves, handgrips and boot soles… it sounds as if the store must be enormous but it’s not, and it’s surprising

how much has been packed in here, it’s a bit of a Mary Poppins carpet bag of bike-related stuff, with anything not in stock likely to be got within 24 hours via courier, if needed. Another customer draws Phil’s attention while we browse the sunglasses – brands designed to work under helmets. There seems to be stuff every-bloody-where, casually leaning on a counter we’re eyeballing a vacuum synchroniser and a load of other interesting gadgets. Phil’s keen to point out the generously-proportioned fitting rooms with large mirrors, though the current customer’s not interested in those. But he is impressed by the point-of-sale software. Phil’s a bit of a geek and uses a Cloud-based set-up that can email you the receipt and track everything you’ve bought – there’s no need to jot down your size, or which lube you prefer, if you’ve bought it before, it’ll be recorded. Hmm, it’s getting busy. Best leave Phil to it, but we’ll be back. There are a few gaps in our inventory, and we could use some good advice when filling them… Techmoto is open six days a week, Monday-toFriday 9.30 to 5.30 and Saturday 9-4.
