ELLO... and welcome to the November issue of Kiwi Rider. Ever seen the ‘World’s Fastest Indian’? Thought so. Kiwis are synonymous with the speed trials held most years on the expansive salt flats of Bonneville in the USA. It takes a lot of guts, serious grit and a very level head to ride absolutely flat out on the salt. many a moment daydreaming about fitting trick bits to your bike to make it faster, lighter or a bit more trick. Turn to page 84 for the most nicely blinged-up YZ450F we’ve ever seen. The mods don’t just make it look better, it goes better too. Cruisers aren’t generally renowned for their handling prowess and visceral motors ‘cruising’ doesn’t need either of those attributes. However, Victory’s new 1200 Octane offers both, so the choice is yours - cruise or rip it up. Turn to page 32 for more. Have you dusted your bikes off and been out riding yet? Spring is officially here, so get out there and show us what you get up to - send your pics to admin@kiwirider.co.nz and we’ll feature them. Enjoy the mag. BEN WILKINS

Shorai Post Classic International Challenge

T

he Labour weekend (October 22-23) Shorai International Classic Challenge promises to again be a great spectacle. The usual troupe of Australians are heading over to try to exact revenge after the Kiwi’s grabbed the Barry Sheene Challenge Cup in Sydney. Now in its fifth year at Hampton Downs, the event will feature a tribute to the original ‘Flying Doctor’ Dr Rodger Freeth (PhD), who has been 14 times national champion, two time Bathurst winner, New Zealand land speed record holder, and car- and co- driving champion. Along with the McIntosh synonymous with his success there will be a range of his other machines on display. On track look out for more cutting action from the legendary machines of yesteryear. The latest class to get a run for pre-1995 motorcycles. There will be a range of stands to keep you entertained between races including the wheelie machine that debuted at the Bike Show this year. Admission is $15 per day for adults or $25 for the weekend at the gate. This is the year’s premier post classic meeting, you really shouldn’t miss it. See www.nzpostclassics.org.nz for more info.

ViĂąales won in style at the Silverstone GP

Photo suzuki-racing.com

but Marquez still prevails…

Words: Michael Esdaile

2016 has set a record for the biggest number of different race winners in the 67 year history of the premier class.

W

ith 13 races of the 18 race season run, eight riders have won races but through it all Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez has maintained his championship lead and at round 14 on September 24, he won his fourth race of the season, at Aragon in northern Spain. It was his first win since he took the chequered flag at Germany’s Sachsenring on July 17. The Spanish bull of the 2015 season has been carefully controlled in 2016 – steadily going about collecting points in his bid for his third MotoGP world crown rather than laying everything on the line. The win-it-orbin-it mentality has been pushed deep into the background, replaced by a calmer, more calculated approach. Until lap 13 of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on September 4 that is. Then the raging Spanish bull made a re-appearance, Marquez duffing up Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi in a bid to extend his lead in the championship.

Viñales!

With fellow Spaniard Maverick Viñales (Suzuki Ecstar GSXRR) long gone in the lead at Silverstone, Marquez looked initially content to settle for second, in the knowledge his closest rivals in the championship were behind him. Viñales was of no concern. Neither was Jorge Lorenzo, languishing in eighth place with a vibrating rear tyre, the result of going harder on his suspension settings. Marquez had tyre issues of his own, perhaps another reason he had given up trying to keep up with Viñales. He led the jostling group going for second place for four laps before Rossi out-accelerated him. Even then Marquez remained calm, content to do everything to preserve his tyres – he had gone for a soft compound front when a hard turned out to be the best choice. Rossi held second for seven laps before Andrea Iannone (Ducati) took the runner-up

spot. By then Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) had passed Marquez, who had slipped to fifth. Iannone’s run at the head of the chasing pack didn’t last a lap before he crashed, leaving Crutchlow second, Rossi third and Marquez fourth. It was at that point the wild animal that lives within Marquez came out. In a lap and a half of no holds barred corner-to-corner action, that was a replay of Sepang 2015, he and Rossi went at it as if the championship was on the line, not merely the three championship points separating third from fourth. At one point Marquez ran off the track, but re-joined behind Rossi, and went back at it. Despite an unruly Honda, Marquez stuck to his task, eventually overcoming Rossi and establishing a small gap. With only Crutchlow and Viñales ahead of him, neither of whom was a championship threat, it seemed Marquez was then prepared to settle for third, and put another three points on Rossi. But when Crutchlow’s Honda momentarily lost rear traction, it was enough to amp up the animal in Marquez, and he attacked. With Crutchlow laying a distant tenth in the title chase, Marquez could have let him go. All season long that had been his modus operandi. But not at Silverstone. Beating Crutchlow with Rossi fourth would have put seven points on the Yamaha man, extending Marquez’s championship lead to 60 points. So he threw caution to the wind, and went after Crutchlow. With a lap to go he attempted an out-braking manoeuvre at the end of Hangar Straight but got it wrong, hitting Crutchlow in the leg with the wing on the front of the Repsol Honda. Somehow the Englishman retained control but Marquez ran wide and off the track, letting Rossi and Dani Pedrosa through. Marquez wasn’t done. Despite a Honda that was wobbling and bobbling, he got past his team-mate, to finish fourth, behind Rossi. After all that action, including running off the track twice, instead of extending his lead, Marquez lost three points to Rossi at Silverstone, and headed for round 13 at Misano 50 points in front of the Italian, and 64 points KIWI RIDER

The latest home for Yamaha’s brawny 900 triple is possibly the best one yet.

ast month we tested the all new, and rather cool, Yamaha XSR 700 LAMs machine and came away more than a little impressed. This month we step things up a bit with the XSR 900, which is even more impressive and something of a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Our blue-tanked 900, while still looking retro cool, definitely embraces Yamaha’s Faster Sons philosophy, almost looked a little dowdy when compared to the startling performance and exuberant excitement this baby delivers when the throttle twisted. The XSR 900 engine architecture is more or less the same as that of the

With 103hp to push it along, Victory’s new 1200 Octane is a sparkling performer.

I

n the past it’s fair to say I have been somewhat underwhelmed by most North American motorcycles. In particular, they’re not noted for their dynamic performance. In fairness to them though, they tend to make cruisers and I’m not really a cruiser kind of guy. However, that’s not to say I dislike cruisers, in fact I have enjoyed a few cruisers in the past; the terrific Kawasaki Vulcan 900 is one that springs straight to mind, among others. Well, I have to now add the new Victory Octane 1200 to that list. It’s

undeniably a looker, is well made and, here’s the best bit, goes very well. It even handles pretty darn well... I might have to change my thinking. The all-new Octane model has a 1200 60-degree V-twin engine, which is actually 1177cc and features liquid cooling, double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. It is fuelled by sequential injection through a single 60mm throttle body, which helps it produce 103hp at 8000rpm and 76lbft of torque at 6000rpm or 76.8kW and 103Nm respectively in new money.

hat do you do if you are BMW, have one of the world’s most phenomenal superbike engines at your disposal and want to go hunting large capacity, tarmacbased adventure bikes, such as the Ducati Multistrada and Kawasaki Versys – both of which are excellent, versatile bikes. Well folks, obviously you build a your own version, shoe-horning an S1000RR sportsbike motor in there, adorning it with as many creature comforts and gadgets as possible – then call it the S1000’XR’. To be honest, the concept sounded like a complete hoot to us, so when we got our grubby mitts on a fresh-out-of-

the-box XR we were more than a little excited. After throwing down some running-in kilometres we did quick pitstop at BMW NZ to have the running-in engine mapping changed and we were ready for business. First up the XR is a big and tall machine. In fact, I would go as far as to say it’s almost unnecessarily so when compared to its engine donor, the S1000RR superbike. Short or smaller riders will most likely be daunted by the sheer size of it. However, while the seat is not height adjustable (there are other seat options), a lowering kit is available from BMW (a $700 option). Though it’s huge – did I mention that? – I do think it’s handsome, in a BMW kind of way with bright asymmetric headlights (which seems to have become a BMW trait on its machines). The XR has a

Most readers will know the story of The World’s Fastest Indian. Walter Rands-Trevor made the pilgrimage to Bonneville to have a go for himself.

I

first got the bug to go to the Bonneville salt flats because my in-laws have raced a car there since sometime way back in the 80s. Being a motorcyclist, I thought that if I was going to go, I was going to take a bike and actually ride on the salt myself rather than be a spectator. And in 2012 that’s exactly what I did. I bought a 2008 Kawasaki ZX-10R and did a few mods to it (reground cams, tidied cylinder head, high compression pistons, balanced crank, Kawasaki race kit ECU, K&N race air filter, full Akrapovic exhaust and Wideband Power Commander datalogger), after all, if you are going all that way you might as well try to go as fast as you can! The experience of being on the salt flats at Bonneville is amazing. The film ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ does a great job of showcasing the salt flats but actually

being there is something else again. It’s incredibly vast, perfectly flat, and blindingly white. The actual racing itself takes place on three or four arrow straight courses that can be up to 9 miles (14km) long and the objective, obviously, is just to go as fast as you can. You are only racing the clock, as you go down the course you are timed through mile long segments and your average speed for each full mile is what counts. Every vehicle fits within a specific class, and you just try to beat the record for that class. Simple, right? On that first trip in 2012 I really didn’t know what I was letting myself in for and, while the bike was quick, I just couldn’t get the available power down to the salt. The surface of the salt feels solid under foot, but it’s actually quite easy to scuff the top layer off, so the courses soon collect a fine layer of loose salt on top of them. This loose salt is almost impossible

t’s time to get out your calendars and scribble in a few special dates and places. The schedule for the 2017 New Zealand Motocross Championships have now been set in concrete, with four contrasting types of terrain set to test the country’s elite dirt bike racers throughout February and March. The four-round series will kick off near Timaru on February 5, with rounds to follow in Rotorua (February 19) and the Manawatu (March 12), with the final round in Taupo (March 25). “We are thrilled to be able to finally get this sorted,” said Motorcycling NZ motocross commissioner Howard Lilly, from Karaka. “It has been a hard job to get the dates worked out,” he said. “We are now looking ahead to a brilliant season. We are thrilled with the four clubs and the venues they are providing.” Timaru’s track at Pleasant Point has been venue for the opening round for several seasons now, the course there an interesting mix of man-made jumps, hard-pack soil and tricky off-cambers. Fast and furious action like this is just around the corner when the 2017 New Zealand Motocross Championships kick off near Timaru on February 5 about 25 kilometres from the city, heading towards Atiamuri, has also been a regular on the nationals calendar, the spectacular course there a favourite with spectators for the viewing that it offers. The Flipp’s Motorcycle Park near Himatangi has been granted the third round of the series following the

Manawatu-Orion Motorcycle Club’s successful first time hosting of the event last season. Lilly said this was reward for and vindication of the way the Manawatu club had presented the venue last year, the sand-based track proving to be incredibly popular with riders and spectators alike. mix of youth and experience earned Team New Zealand a top-20 result at the 70th annual Motocross of Nations in Italy. Veteran Motocross of Nations (MXoN) team rider Cody Cooper led by example at the big annual event, often referred to as the Olympic Games of Motocross, at Maggiora, northwest of Milan, on September 24-25. The Mount Maunganui man took his Honda CRF450 to finish 10th and 28th in his two MXGP class outings, the 32-yearold proved himself the equal of many of the current crop of motocross GP stars and was perhaps an inspiration to his younger team-mates, Hamilton’s Josiah Natzke and Takaka’s Hamish Harwood. Natzke showed maturity and strength beyond his 17 years to finish a remarkable sixth overall in MX2 (250cc) class qualifying and then 37th and 34th in his two points races for the team. The MX2 class riders were always at a horsepower disadvantage against the 450cc bike riders. Riding a 450cc KTM, 21-year-old Harwood was the team’s Open Class rider. He finished 38th and then 31st in his two races, the task made all the more difficult after he crashed during his qualifying race on Saturday and rode in considerable pain on Sunday. The team’s combined results earned them a ranking of 17th overall among the 38 nations entered, the Kiwi trio finishing just one point shy of 16th. Team manager Bevan Weal, from Taupo, said he was “extremely proud” of his riders. “Cody (Cooper) was like a rock, with a very solid performance coming from the

Mitas Tyres win 2016 KTM Hard Enduro Series Gold & Silver class outright winners

Words: Jock ‘long lunch’ McLauchlan / Photos: Geoff ‘business lunch’ Osborne

Balance shafts in a two-stroke? That’s right, and we reckon KTM has a game-changer on its hands.

K

TM boss Stefan Pierer, the man who has lead KTM’s phenomenal rise since 1992, recently said that last year’s revenue was more than a billion Euros. Investment back in to the company was more than 100 million Euros last year, this year it will be more than 130 million Euros but even a quick ride on any of the Austrian company’s 2017 model year off-road models will show that the reinvestment back in the company is certainly paying dividends. In this case, KR put two all new two-stroke models through their paces for a quick ride impression; the 300 XC and 250 EXC. The biggest news among all the other major updates is the counter balancer in the engine– the first on a

production two-stroke! Trust me, this is no sales gimmick or passing fad – other manufacturers are going to have to adopt this new concept to stay in the hunt. No longer will riders buy fourstrokes for a vibration free, smoother engine. These new counter-balanced engines are now every bit as smooth as their four-stroke counterparts, at all revs, but particularly at high rpm (vibration was definitely a serious issue with the older 300 engines). The other great thing is that they still feel like two-strokes and have all their traditional attributes. They are light, make a heap of useable power, have little engine braking effect and are fun. My feeling is these new engines will pull a lot of riders from four-stroke models and top riders will go faster on these once they learn to ride twostrokes properly.

*Well... maybe not the ultimate ‘ultimate’ but the best we’ve tested Words: Jock McLauchlan, Ben Wilkins / Photos: Geoff Osborne

Ever thought about just how good your bike would be if you could afford all the bling you wanted? Wonder no more, we test the ultimate* Yamaha YZ450F...

P

arts emporium Northern Accessories (and producer of the Dirt Guide and Road Guide catalogues) imports some of the biggest names in the business, including Yoshimura, Twin Air, Renthal, Oakley, Zeta and more. Northern’s general manager Steven Croad wondered, just like we’ve done ourselves many a time, how good would a bike be with some thoughtfully spec’d parts to upgrade it. Unlike the rest of us, Steven has access to the company’s extensive Dirt Guide catalogue to pick and choose from. So that’s exactly what he did. And this rather tasty YZ450F is the result. The list of finery that has been thrown at this Yamaha is comprehensive and there’s not much on there that doesn’t serve a purpose, well... actually... that’s not quite true. Some of it serves the purpose of making the bike look very trick indeed. We don’t often get to test bikes that have been modified much beyond standard, and we reckon most blokes who’ve done this to their bikes don’t let others ride them either. So when KR got the call to test this sweet looking machine, we quite literally jumped at the chance. Starting with Yamaha’s yellow 50th Anniversary 2016 edition of the YZ450F, which is already a very cool looking machine, Steven added a comprehensive list of cool stuff from the Dirt Guide catalogue. The list of parts ranges from a full Yoshimura RS-4 exhaust to a Twin Air power flow kit, Zeta products, DRC parts and Renthal bars etc and when it’s all put together you get cool looking on a whole new level. However, what really got my attention when I got the chance to swing a leg over it was just how much bloody grunt it’s got! A couple of years back I attended the launch of the first reverse-cylinder YZ450F in Australia and was told that all the bikes had dyno’d up at around the 57hp mark, making the YZ a seriously fast bike even as standard. Well... let me just say that this Northern Accessories machine feels like it’s a solid mid-60hp bike if ever there was one. It just plain hauls arse. That flash Yoshimura exhaust and Twin Air intake system make some genuinely big horsepower gains that are easily felt – and the extra hp was appreciated in the power-sapping sand of the test track. The Yam also had a set of the new Michelin Star Cross 5 sand tyres fitted. These are very impressive sand tyres, particularly the rear which delivers KIWI RIDER

Words & photos: John Nick

We spent five days in New Zealand’s high country getting to really know Yamaha’s WR250F to see what the enduro/trail machine can do.

F

or all the riding I have done in NZ and overseas there’s little as satisfying as our own South Island high country. Last autumn I got the chance to spend five days with good friends riding these magic mountains again. As a bonus I got to ride Yamaha’s new 2016 WR250F for a fairly decent distance - just on 1500km as it turned out. When Yamaha’s YZ-F motocross-based WR250F was introduced in 2001 it was the first truly competitive 250cc fourstroke enduro bike, and for many seasons Yamaha’s competitors would struggle to produce their own quarter-litre four stroke to rival the combined power and reliability of the WR250F. Brilliant as the WR proved to be it became the target of other manufacturers and, with relatively few significant upgrades barring an alloy frame, by 2008 the WR was seeming somewhat lack-lustre compared to machines being produced by the Euro enduro specialists KTM and Husqvarna.

A WHOLE NEW DEAL

Yamaha’s WR250F finally redressed the balance in 2015. Forget holding the line, the only characteristic the new model shares with its predecessors is the colour blue. The WRF model is Yamaha’s purpose-built enduro bike and is partnered by the very similar but more cross country competition oriented FX model. Both models are again closely based on the YZs: new frame, backwards leaning reverse exhaust, fuel injected engine and updated suspension, albeit tweaked to perform in the enduro and trail environment. Finally, Yamaha can once again boast that the WR250F is based on the cutting-edge MX models. On top of the YZ upgrades the WR250F

gets the addition of a six-speed gearbox, slightly heavier flywheel rotor, and enduro suspension settings. In the crate, WR models share extra noise baffles for Australian compliance rules, but here in NZ the bike you will be wheeling out of the dealers is a derestricted competition-ready tool. In addition each bike comes with a road legal kit which can be fitted, or not, depending on the buyer’s preference. Yamaha also provides buyers with the option of different exhaust systems and engine tuning maps that can further personalise the WR250F to suit.

AND IT DELIVERS

The first offroad climb confirmed that the new engine is a massive improvement. Where the old five-speed WR would rev all day, every day, it lacked low and mid range punch. To ride fast the rider had to anticipate uphills and deep berms with extra engine revs. In contrast the new bike lacks nothing in terms of power. Right off the bottom this motor gets into its work crisply and cleanly, building great midrange with seamless top end to follow. Combined with six well-spaced gear ratios it lacks for nothing and while delivering great all-round power remains totally controllable, even for relative beginners. In a former life as a dirt bike tour guide I did a massive number of kays on the old WRs and trained myself to ride the five-speeders a gear lower than felt comfortable to negate the lack of real bottom end. It was only a partly effective strategy, and not always a load of fun. In contrast the new reverse engine, with its six gears and vastly increased bottom to mid-range power delivers so much more. I could literally take a pick of ratios, a gear high, or a gear low, it made little difference, the new bike maintains KIWI RIDER

BSA Rocket III and Triumph Trident

T

he late 1960s proved to be a junction point for the rapidly developing big bike market, soon to become known as Superbikes. The BSA Group had acquired Triumph/Ariel in 1951, and in 1968 seemed anxious to produce a motorcycle that would give the British conglomerate a head start in the coming multi-cylinder big bike stakes. Their opening shots were the BSA Rocket and Triumph Trident 750cc triples. ‘After today the motorcycle world will never be the same’, boasted the company advertising. The claim was very likely true, but sadly for a fading British industry, it was also the beginning of the end. One year later, in 1969, Honda launched the CB750-4 which turned the industry on its head. The motorcycle world would certainly never be the same. It wasn’t, however, all bad for the BSA/Triumph group, especially on the race track. The bikes wearing the two charismatic brand names were almost identical. The main difference being the cylinders on the BSA were slanted forward, and on the Triumph they were upright. The Triumph later received the same forward slanting cylinders, and improved power. Like many aspects of the British bike industry at the time, the technology was refined, retuned, and stretched to the absolute

maximum. The triples were really one and a half Tiger twins on a common crankcase. There seemed to be no financial support for research and development. At a time when overhead camshafts were becoming commonplace, the BSA Rocket, and the Trident, were still using pushrods to open the valves. Kick starts were becoming rare on road-going machines too. The Honda CB750 had an electric starter in 1969, but the triples didn’t get one until 1975. By then it was too late, and even though the triples had evolved into fine, fast, and good looking motorcycles, the parent company Norton Villiers Triumph was on the verge of collapse and production finished at the end of 1975. Throughout the seven-year life span the Triumph/BSA triples were given significant modifications and improvements, such as a Lockheed front disc brake in 1973. Also in 1973 an American-inspired version of the road going triple was released; the Triumph X-75, originally a badged BSA. It was one of the most striking looking machines on the road, but it still wasn’t enough to stall the advance of the Japanese hordes. As far is performance goes the triples matched most of the Japanese output. At a press test at the time 210km/h was recorded, although standard models straight off the showroom floor were
