Michelin has launched the new Starcross 5 range of motocross tyres following an extensive three-year testing and development program with riders of all levels, from world championship riders, to amateur racers. The Michelin Starcross 5 range breaks new ground for Michelin in the world of motocross. Compared to its predecessors (Starcross 3 and 4), the Michelin Starcross 5 range features a new, lighter casing design. The new design offers a weight saving of up to 15%* without compromising strength and durability due to the use of stronger, higher density materials.

VX-PRO4 The more exible casing and aggressive tread pattern also offers a number of other benets for riders: – Improved traction in a straight line and more progressive handling in corners. – The ability to run higher pressures, to reduce the risk of the tyre coming off the rim, with no loss of grip or comfort. – No ‘running-in’ needed as the exible casing offers great performance from the starting gate. The new casing has also been engineered to optimise the size of the contact patch.

e’re excited! If you’ve not seen it yet, we’ve launched an e-zine called the KR Report. It’s full of grass-roots New Zealand racing and events, as well as products and selected tests from the KR archives. It’s not a replacement for the Kiwi Rider printed magazine but supplements it with the local racing and events presented in a way that’s been impossible before. We can show you more pictures as well as video in an interactive way we just can’t do in print. So, we’re excited to be able to bring you more NZ-specific content on your computer, tablet or phone. Oh, and it’s free. Didn’t get the first KR Report? Email us at admin@kiwirider.co.nz and we’ll fire it out to you every month for nothing. If

you’ve got an iPad or iPhone there’s a Joomag app to download for enhanced viewing too. Anyway, onto the September issue of KR. We’ve had the chance to ride the first 2016 KTM 350XC-F to land in New Zealand. Extreme Enduro supremo Chris Birch let us ride his bike no sooner had it been built up out of the crate. Head to page 70 to see what this all new machine is like. Fancy an adventure? We’ve got some inspiration for you. On page 44 we’ve got a bunch of Kiwi mates who flew to Colorado to ride KTMs in the mountains. And on page 50, Beks (our DR200S-mounted lass) and Beryl (her DR200S) have their last hurrah up the east coast to the East Cape to see the inspiration for the Whale Rider movie. Maybe as we’re out of winter it’s time for an adventure of your own? Take photos and tell us all about it! Enjoy the mag. BEN WILKINS

AFRICA TWIN PRICES REVEALED FOR US MARKET

J

ust before we went to press, we received pricing for Honda’s keenly anticipated CRF1000L Africa Twin. The American market will get the Dual Clutch Transmission model for $13,699 and the standard gearbox machine is set at $12,999. At the current exchange rate this makes the traditional gearbox bike NZ$20,490 and the DCT model NZ$21,594. How these prices translate to landed in NZ is tricky to surmise but as soon as we have prices from Blue Wing Honda we’ll let you know. Both machines will come as standard with ABS and HSTC (Honda Selectable Torque Control – a type of traction control) and both systems can be switched off for dirt riding. The DCT system will either shift gears automatically or they can be shifted manually via buttons on the left handlebar. A foot gear change can be purchased as an accessory ‘for customers who want a traditional feel’.

DUCATI 1299 PANIGALE IN STORES

D

ucati’s rather sweet-looking Panigale 1299S is now in NZ stores. Our ad man, CSS instructor and pet racer Todd ‘Jammy’ Sutherland got a skid on the new bike and reckons it’s a “bit of a beast”. With a claimed 205hp (151kW) and 145Nm of torque, he’s probably right. Thankfully it has a full complement of electronic whizzbangery to keep things the shiny side up. So much so, Sutherland had to phone the shop to figure out how to turn it all off. The price for this slice of latin loveliness? $42,990.

N

on cruiser fans may struggle to get excited by a new cruiser model – well, at least, I guessed I was in this category. I even found myself pondering whether cruisers were meant to be exciting or not, while riding shotgun with Vege out to Kawasaki HQ. I mean, cruising and excitement are virtually at opposite ends of the spectrum, aren’t they? But, I was on a mission to pick up the new Kawasaki

With a low seat, swept back bars and slash-cut pipes, the Vulcan 900 Custom has all the hallmarks of a classic custom but with a modern, water-cooled twist. Words: Jock McLauchlan / Photos: Geoff Osborne

Vulcan 900 custom and find out. I already knew that cruisers could certainly be fun to ride with a distinctive style all of their own, but exciting? Hmmm? Time to find out. According to the brochure Kawasaki’s Vulcan 900 Custom has ‘svelte bodywork whose seductive curves trace voluptuous lines that machines alone are incapable of forming’. Sounds like marketing schmooze to us but one quick look at the Vulcan and I knew I liked the styling. The black with green detailing looks cool, there’s no doubt about that. The 21-inch front and 17-inch rear, black, cast wheels are slick and I especially like the cleverly hidden rear suspension that gives the Vulcan a hard-tail look of old. Kawasaki has definitely nailed the quintessential cruiser style. Easing the custom out on to the road the riding position feels

comfortable, natural and reasonably neutral. I found myself feeling quite at home. The motor is a gem – I can’t see many people stalling this bike at the lights as there’s masses of torque, lots of flywheel inertia and a modest 40kW at 6000rpm. The torque figure of 82Nm at 3700rpm is what really tells the story of this motor though. Short-shifting through the gears is the way to go. Hit three grand or so, then slot the next gear and so on. This kind of riding makes for surprisingly quick and, almost, effortless progress. Revving the engine higher makes almost no difference to the rate of acceleration and, to my mind, this is exactly how a cruiser motor should be. Grunt with guts! Thankfully Kawasaki has stayed with a sweet-shifting, five-speed gearbox. Six gears would just make for unnecessary gear changing.

With the CTX1300, Honda has produced its own high-tech, large capacity vee-four ‘bagger’. Jock McLauchlan dug out his inner cruiser and settled in for the ride.

T

he CTX1300 is an interesting beast. I was a little baffled when I first laid eyes on Honda’s latest V4. I wasn’t quite sure what it was trying to be. Honda’s press release says it combines the best attributes of both touring and cruising motorcycles to produce this unique machine. I can’t argue with the unique bit… it certainly looks different. It turns out, after a little research, that Honda has joined the world of the ‘bagger’ – making a custom-styled bike with panniers (or bags) and the venerable Pan European has donated the basics of its motor. Apparently, the C in CTX stands for comfort, T for technology and X for experience. No question, this bike is an experience to ride and feels different to any other bike I have ridden. I’m not sure it’s Honda’s best work (remember that Honda normally sets the bar way up high) as a bike for NZ conditions. Anyway, starting with the motor… The 90-degree, V4, DOHC, 1266.4cc, liquidcooled engine, mounted north/south in the chassis, like in a proper car, is an absolute gem! Derived from the well-liked Pan European ST1300 motor, the CTX engine has been modified to produce more low-end torque and mid-range power. Honda also says the motor has a more characterful, V4 ‘backbeat’ soundtrack created by lengthening one of the two header pipes that exit on each side of the engine. This I’m not really sure about because it was pretty quiet to ride, but Geoff,

our photographer, reckoned the CTX sounded ‘totally bad-arse’ in a cool and inoffensive way while he was taking photos. The power delivery is smooth, effortless and decently quick. While the outright top speed and high rpm power is not particularly impressive for a 1300cc machine, the real world, everyday riding power is exceptionally good. There’s an abundance of grunt low in the mid-range, giving the CTX the flexibility to rapidly overtake without much need to stir the gearbox. Only very aggressive manoeuvres will require a down shift or two. Mostly the Honda wafts along on a modest throttle opening gobbling up everything in its stride. Steep hills when heavily laden are simply shrugged off as inconsequential with the merest whiff of gas... yes, as stated, this is an awesome touring engine. The front and rear brakes are combined, with the ABS linked into the system too. It is an excellent set-up with effective stopping power no matter which lever you hit first. The front lever still delivers the real grunt if you need to haul this 338kg bad-boy up in a proper hurry. The ABS action is first rate and allows serious braking without being too intrusive. Really, the braking is faultless. The T in CTX (Technology) does equate to some clever stuff. The fuel tank is located under the seat to lower the centre of gravity, but at only 19.5 litres the fuel range is not huge. Five position heated grips come standard. A twin speaker stereo system is controlled by tank mounted buttons, offering great ease of use. The stereo is iPod, MP3 and smart phone

BMW’s Problem Child

has grown up Words: Jock McLauchlan / Photos: Geoff Osborne

uite a few different genres of test road bikes have passed through the KR shed and into my hands lately. All have been at least decent and some great to ride. But none has been quite as user-friendly as the 2015 update to BMW’s F800R. For a bike to be truly user-friendly it has to do a lot of things right – more than you might think on the surface of it. Scratch the surface though and, broadly speaking, the bike needs to be comfortable to sit on and ride and the engine must be easy to use – this means great fuelling with no hiccups in the power and the power must be easy to modulate. On top of that you need a few creature comforts like heated grips. Also, everything must work in unison... there’s no point having a luxurious feeling seat if the suspension is rigid and the feed-back beats you half to death. So, just getting the comfort part right equates to many things. You need great ergos, good suspension, a comfortable seat that is not too high and nice tactile surfaces...the list goes on. Yes, making a user friendly motorcycle is not simple. However, BMW has largely nailed it with the F800R. I jumped on it, pulled out, went straight in to peak hour traffic and began lane splitting. Within minutes it seemed like I’d slipped passed a thousand cars, I was totally at home and it felt like I’d been riding this particular BMW my whole life. The F800R put me in a ‘happy place’ and a heap of that feeling can be attributed to the power delivery. The 798cc DOHC, 8 valve, liquid-cooled parallel twin is a sweetheart. Faultless fuelling from idle onwards ensures

Having been inspired to ride in the USA, KR reader Bryce Hayward and friends hired KTMs to ride in Colorado and Utah. Words & photos: Bryce Hayward

N

o shade, no water, forty degree plus heat, looking down to the Colorado River we realised we’d missed a turn. We were in Lockhart Basin in Utah, and although suffering from the heat, it had been a good day riding and thankfully we weren’t far from our destination, Moab. I’ve wanted to adventure ride in the States, after reading stories about the Trans-American Trail a few years ago. While that ride goes from Tennessee to Oregon, I realised I wanted to do more technical adventure riding and Colorado and Utah is the place to go. After getting two confirmed starters for the trip – Pete and Rob – I began my planning. Lots of time spent on the net helped sort the route. There’s a very limited time in summer when you can cross the Colorado passes, so we planned to arrive there in July. Buying bikes in the States became too complicated, so instead I arranged hire bikes. Three flights later we arrived in Durango, Colorado and met David and Dean from MountainADV.com with our three, almost new, KTM 690s. The bikes had been lowered and fitted with after market seats, racks, ABS dongles, and 12-volt power outlets. That is impressive detail for rental bikes. Saddle and tanks bags loaded and we were

off to Bluff in Utah. This was our longest road section of the trip, at two and a half hours. On the first day we got our first puncture, after we went to explore a sandy road. We had shared the tools and spares around the three of us, so when anything happened we all had to be there to help. A little 12-volt pump did the hard work, and I wouldn’t use anything else now. Between us on the trip we each ended up getting a puncture, all caused by nails and screws. The following day we rode through Valley of the Gods and up the Moki Dugway, which is five kilometres of gravel switchbacks rising up 365 metres. A sandy road lead to Muley Point lookout, which gave us a cliff edge vantage point to view this much filmed, western cowboy style landscape. At our hotel we asked where we could park our dirty-looking bikes and were surprised when the reply was under the main entrance canopy. This was to be a common parking place in the USA and not something I’ve ever been offered in NZ. We were staying in Moab for three nights, so I went with Pete looking for a bike shop to have new rear tyres fitted, ready for when we left town. We found a place with leisurely service, where we were told we could only get them changed if it wasn’t too hot. Looking around the shop Pete found some cooling vests. We had never heard of them, but you

soak them in water before putting them on and as the water evaporates the vests’ cool you down. After riding in extreme heat through Lockhart Basin it was an easy sale. That night we rode a short distance down the road to dinner, not wearing our helmets; they’re not required in Utah and it was a new experience. It was unusual not wearing one and I felt very vulnerable. It was so hot and dry in Moab that Pete said it was like riding into a big hair dryer, although Rob and I couldn’t comment. The most fun I have had riding a bike in first gear was on the Slickrock Trail through the Navajo sandstone. The trails with steep climbs, drop-offs and off-cambers were almost like being on a roller coaster. Bike trails are marked out by white-painted lines on the rock and the 4WD trails are also marked, but you can easily just follow the black rubber lines left behind from their tyres. We thought we had pushed too far on the 690s when we dropped down into Hell’s Gate. The trail went up a really steep climb and the usually grippy sandstone was made really slippery by all the rubber left from the 4WDs. After one failed attempt we decided to retreat. This was also a long steep climb out, but as the 4WDs crawl down this way, they hadn’t left much rubber on the trail and we sailed up. Our most technical ride was on the Golden Spike trail. We rode up and down big rock

isembarking from the Interislander ferry with a drove of other motorcycles seemed like a fitting return to the North Island. I rode up through the Rimutaka Ranges on the SH2 and I wasn’t the only one on two wheels relishing the twists, turns and exceptional views this road provides. It’s really not to be missed and reminded me just why I loved the challenge of the sealed roads in the North so much. I was tired, it was about 6.30pm and as usual I hadn’t booked a place to stay. It’s less important in the South where freedom camping is always an option. There are fewer opportunities in the North Island so it’s a good idea to plan ahead a little. To make things even more interesting, thunder had started to roll around the hills. I vowed that the next camp sign I saw would be my stop for the night, which turned out to be Greytown.

I wondered how I had ever turned my back on motorcycling, the total freedom it offers The council camp ground turned out to be immaculate. I rejoiced that there were cabins on the site which looked unoccupied - no tent for me in the thunder! Only trouble was the camp caretaker Stan told me that the cabins were unfortunately the subject of some legal wrangling and couldn’t therefore be used. Oh no! Montana-born Stan must have seen my exhausted, crestfallen face and took pity on me. He generously gave me the key to the staff stay-over room. He lived close by so the room was never used but it turned out to be cosy with a double bed and great, free, hot showers. Utter bliss. I woke refreshed, no storm and had the most amazing experience at dawn watching about 25 hot air balloons take off for the Wairarapa balloon festival. As dawn broke they sailed away, their gracefulness belying the fierceness of the competition between each craft. The ‘Team Coke’ balloon was a man down on their set up team and so I was quickly utilised to help direct the fan, which initially inflates the neck of the balloon so that the hot air can fill her. I watched her fly into the blue as I munched on a very welcome banger in a bun before loading

Beryl once more, and heading towards Masterton. Riding north on SH2 I can recommend the Mt Bruce Scenic Reserve which has marvellous coffee and cake – and makes for a splendid mid-morning stop. At Eketahuna I turned east along the Alfredton Road. This is by no means the quickest route but it is a wonderful piece of riding that takes in some really special stop offs along the way. The Waihi Falls are definitely worth a visit, it’s only a short walk to the falls from the car-park, which means there’s no need to change out of your bike boots. I also didn’t miss the opportunity to take a picture of Beryl alongside New Zealand’s longest placename… Taumata whakatangi hangakoauau o tamatea turi pukakapiki maunga horo nuku pokai whenua kitanatahu. Personally, I think the name is a little bit of wishful thinking about this otherwise fairly unremarkable little hamlet. There are also many loose sheep along this road so extra care must be taken.

Rejoining SH2 at Waipukurau, I stopped and bought a good bottle of Pinot Noir and put in a call to an inspirational chap I met all the way back at Whanganui with the BMW gang – Folker Liebenow. Folker seemed genuinely pleased to hear from me and we arranged to meet alongside the highway so he could guide me back to his farm, deep in the hills of the Raukawa Range. I followed his car, and also unfortunately the road grader, as we went over the Burma Road - which made the going very deep. I was glad not to embarrass myself in front of this seasoned offroader although he later tells me a tale of stray livestock which meant he too came a-cropper along this stretch; it can happen to the best of us. Folker’s home is a veritable paradise. Spotted pigs wander amongst the apple trees, sheep graze on hillsides and the farms dogs await the whistle that tells them to leap aboard the ATV. The staggering amount of work that it has taken to transform this windswept valley into the homestead that it is today became apparent as Folker showed me

PERFECT WEEKEND FOR NORTH ISLAND CHAMPS EVENT Words and photo: Andy McGechan

T

here were very few surprises at the first of two rounds of the 2015 North Island Motocross Championships in the Manawatu over the weekend of August 22/23. The winning riders in every class were national calibre riders; all the bike brands were well represented and each had reason to celebrate; the sand-based Flipp’s Motorcycle Park circuit at Himatangi was a perfect venue for a mid-winter blast, especially with rain in the forecast, and the smooth and flowing nature of the course allowed for two days of high-class race action. The leading individuals were Taupo’s Brad Groombridge (Suzuki), who scored a hat-trick of wins to dominate the MX1 class; Rotorua’s Scotty Canham (Kawasaki), who won the MX2 (250cc) class; Pukekohe’s Kurtis Lilly (Husqvarna) and Feilding’s Tony Cvitanovich (KTM), who shared top spot in the senior 125cc class and also won the junior 14-16 years’ 250cc class; Taupo’s Wyatt Chase (Yamaha), who won the junior 15-16 years’ 125cc class; Mangakino’s Maximus Purvis (KTM), who won the junior 1214 years’ 125cc class; Oparau’s James Scott (Husqvarna), who won the 13-16 years’ 85cc Feilding’s Tony Cvitanovich (KTM), the most dominant individual at the 2015 North Island Motocross Championships. class; Matamata’s Brodie Connolly (KTM), who won the 11-12 years’ 85cc class and Rongotea’s Rhys Jillings, who won the 8-10 years’ 85cc class. “But, to be honest, I had an advantage at the weekend because it’s But it was perhaps 15-year-old local rider Cvitanovich who was the my local track and I ride here a lot. I won’t have any such advantage in most impressive of them all, with this rider not only sharing first equal Hawke’s Bay and it may be a different story there.” in the senior 125cc class and winning the junior 250cc class, but also Motorcycling New Zealand motocross commissioner Howard Lilly finishing runner-up to Chase in the junior 15-16 years’ 125cc class. was pleased with the riders’ response to this resurrected North Island “It would be pretty awesome to be able to win all three classes when the competition. series wraps up with round two in Hawke’s Bay (on September 19-20),” “The track conditions were perfect. A

n icy blast whipped across the Central Plateau in early July, but Taupo’s Brad Groombridge was still in sizzling hot form at the 16th annual New Zealand Motorcycle TT Championships near Kuratau, winning the premier grade for a second consecutive season. Even though the racing was on an untried circuit, the new venue about 15 kilometres further down the road towards Taumarunui, from where Groombridge had celebrated victory last season, the 24-year-old was even more impressive at the Bike Torque Yamaha-sponsored event this time around. He successfully defended both his national TT enduro class and MX1 class crowns that weekend and was perhaps unlucky not to make it three New Zealand titles in total when he raced a wrecked-then-resurrected 2007-model Suzuki RM250 two-stroke in the MX2 (250cc) class as well. He had to settle for sixth overall in the MX2 class – that title won instead

by Tauranga’s Aaron Wiltshier (The Honda Shop Racing Team CRF250) – because of “jetting problems leading to a DNF in one race” although he was competitive even on the out-dated bike, impressively finishing runner-up in two of the four races he did finish. But Groombridge, riding for the Bel Ray Moto City Suzuki Team, had no real problems in the other two classes he contested, racing a Suzuki RMX450 in the enduro class and a Suzuki RM-Z450 in the MX1 class. He won all five races from five starts in the enduro bike class, ending the championship comfortably ahead of Howick’s Liam Draper (Motorex Husqvarna CR125) and he posted an unbeatable score-card of 1-1-1-1-2 in an MX1 class that was laden with heavy-hitters such as last season’s runner-up Ethan Martens (Altherm JCR Yamaha), former world motocross No.2 Josh Coppins (Altherm JCR Yamaha), just-named 2015 Motocross of Nations New Zealand team rider Kayne Lamont (Altherm JCR Yamaha) and leading national superbike roadracer Sloan Frost (Red Baron Suzuki).

Sarah Elwin

Natasha Cairns

“Yeah, it was a pretty good weekend,” said Groombridge. “I think my best result was when I won the last race on Saturday. I crashed near the start and went from last place to pass everybody and take over the lead with almost a lap to go.” Lamont was also a dual-class campaigner and he took his 250cc bike to win the all-capacities feature final race at the end of the weekend. With a staggered start – 125cc bike riders set away first, 250cc bike riders in a second wave, about 20 seconds later, and the 450ccc bike campaigners let loose after another 20 seconds – Lamont had a timing advantage over Groombridge. And that’s how the feature final finished, Lamont winning that stand-alone race ahead of Groombridge. “Another lap and I might have taken the win in that feature race,” Groombridge shrugged. “I love (flat paddock) TT racing. It’s grass-roots stuff for me and I grew up racing events like these.

“I just did the MX2 class for a bit of fun really. I had only bought the RM250 last week and it had a blown engine. But the jetting was all wrong so I pulled out of one race and that cost me a lot of points.” Meanwhile, Auckland-based Sarah Elwin made it three wins in a row when she collected the women’s TT crown. She knew she’d have a fight on her hands to defend her national women’s crown... an impressive array of female riders had lined up in a bid to wrest the crown away from the 20-year-old Elwin and she was on a different bike to the one she’d used in all her previous campaigns. Elwin, who now lives in Papatoetoe but still loves to call Taihape her home, rolled her new Yamaha YZ250F four-stroke bike to the line at Kuratau this year, a very different proposition from the Yamaha YZ125 two-stroke she’d raced to victory the previous two seasons and also raced to win the national women’s motocross title in 2013. But Elwin’s always been fast on a dirt bike and she’s a fast learner too, so soon came to grips with the different handling

20 3/09/15 16:

KTM NZ air-freighted a few 2016 350 XC-F machines to New Zealand early for some of its close friends. A couple found their way into the hands of extreme enduro supremo Chris Birch. Because Chris is such a good bastard he offered us a brief test ride on his 350 XC-F, even before he had the chance to throw a leg over it.

I

have to say that from a looks perspective I think the new 350 XC-F is a tad, well, underwhelming. I just don’t think they do the bike, which is completely new, justice. It looks boring. Fortunately, Chris had put his own personal graphics kit on to this 350 and I think it looks awesome. However, I must say that beauty is only skin deep and has no influence on performance whatsoever, besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Looking beyond the graphics, the new machine is very well thought out with exceptional build quality. Everything is new. The frame is all new, likewise the engine, which seems tiny and very short from front to back. The shock and linkage is completely new too… the list goes on. The radiator shrouds and louvres are integrated and become radiator braces as well. The whole design is very rigid, appears strong and bolts straight to the frame. This set up should prove

very successful at protecting the radiators from minor crashes. But because it is so rigid, I worry that it might actually be worse in some bigger crashes. Time will tell. Ergonomically the new KTM is different and looks different from the previous model too. The seat is very long and flat and the rear mudguard is flatter too. Everything feels very nice when sitting on the bike, with the steering head and handle bars perhaps a little closer than before. But that feeling may be because it’s easier to move bodyweight forward. Basically everything feels really nice from a standstill. Riding the 350, it’s easy to feel the new engine is responsive and strong right from the get-go. It feels stronger than the old model off the bottom and into the early mid-range, which creates a more linear and progressive power delivery. The wild top end is still there but there’s not such a step

Words: Jock McLauchlan / Photos: Geoff Osborne

and it’s not so noticeable; it just feels strong and pulls hard throughout the whole rev range. It does not have the outright torque of a 450 engine, but it does make power over a wider rev range than a 450. Really, this motor is awesome for cross-country/MX work, but is still a whisker lively and inclined to stall at very low rpm for enduro work. The handling on the 2016 XC-F is certainly different. In the past four-stroke KTMs have felt light in the steering and handling. The new chassis seems like it puts a little more weight on the nose and from the specs we know it has a super-fast 26.5 degree rake. In the very soft, heavy damp sand where we rode the bike it feels stable with a very quick but slightly heavier turn-in. So very slightly more effort is required to initially turn-in, but from then on the front is inclined to tuck if the rider isn’t gentle with steering input. But a definitive comment on the

handling and steering is not possible without trying the new 350 in a wider range of conditions. As delivered the rear suspension has a very controlled and secure feel, with slow-ish low-speed rebound damping. It is not ‘enduro plush’ at slow speeds and not ‘MX firm’ as you go faster, so it must be about right for an XC machine. This goes for the front end too. In the sand I was happy with the 4CS forks. They do tend to blow through the travel on braking bumps but were otherwise fine. I think the average rider will be more than impressed with the suspension. As an overall package the machine is an absolute blast. It seems fast and is fast. The ergonomics are brilliant and probably suited to a wider range of riders than before - past KTMs have favoured the taller rider. To me the handling and suspension feel very good, but to be honest

Taking the bike on an overseas tour, or buying or selling overseas? Want someone who knows bikes and knows how they should be handled?

Then call us-we have years of experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US.... SUSPENSION ALCHEMY

The wizards at Kiwi Suspension Solutions turn their attention to our long term DR650 to see what magic they can perform on its dated suspension.

Race Tech’s Gold Valve cartridge emulators

O

ne of the beautiful things about the DR650 is the simplicity of its design. Nothing much has changed on the bike in 10 years, and the original design goes back to 1990. For some parts of the bike this doesn’t really matter. Take the engine for example, keep it refreshed with new oil and a filter and it’ll provide years of solid service. Sure, it’s not a fire-breather (although mods can change this) but it does what it does rather well. The suspension is another area where nothing has really changed. The forks are simple damper rod units that pre-date cartridge forks by a lifetime. The same goes for the rear shock. There’s spring preload and compression damping adjustment but that’s it. And the springs at both end are quite soft. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not bad as such... it’s just they could be so much better. I’ve been riding the DR with its standard suspension setup for about eight months and it’s reasonable from a comfort perspective. That’s all

well and dandy for slow road riding or commuting but things get a little wayward when the roads get twisty and the bike needs to be flung from side to side or on bumpy gravel roads - both the kinds of roads the DR begs to be ridden on. As luck would have it, the guys at Kiwi Suspension Solutions in New Plymouth have been working on a kit for the venerable DR650, which just happens to be one of New Zealand’s best-selling motorcycles - ever. Robert Taylor, head honcho at KSS, explains, “The DR650 is a very popular bike and we can do a lot to upgrade the suspension performance”. KSS offers several upgrades from just changing the shock and fork springs and playing with the oil levels, through to cartridge emulators in the forks and a Nitron replacement rear shock. So when Robert suggested I bring our long term DR in for some suspension alchemy, I was there like a shot. Well, when I say like a shot, the ride to New Plymouth from Auckland is pretty dull on the main roads, so I took the DR down the Forgotten World Highway through

Whangamomona. The twisting roads and gravel sections are perfect for highlighting the good and bad about the DR, and confirmed my thoughts of it being under-sprung and underdamped. After chatting to Robert about the options we decided to go for the mid-range

option, which involves removing the guts of the rear shock and replacing them completely with RaceTech internals (and adds rebound damping adjustment) and fitting new springs and RaceTech Gold Valve Cartridge Emulators to the front forks.

Damper rods out ready for machining

Dennis forking around...

Compression holes drilled out

FORKING REVELATION Dennis Shaw is put in charge of the forks. He’s been working on suspension since the 70s and it shows. His work is calm and precise – just what this work demands. After draining the oil and cleaning the internals he sets to work fitting the emulators, explaining as he goes “The compression holes are huge so there’s little compression damping in the forks. We drill them out to stop them working and then the emulators control the compression damping through the use of shims. There are two adjustments – spring weight and fine tuning with spring tension. You can fit these yourself but it’s easy to get it wrong. If you drill the holes too high it opens the rebound circuit until further up in the stroke. So, the fork will pop up when you let off the brakes but then slow down as the rod gets past the point of the holes.” Holes drilled, Dennis puts the damper rods in the lathe to ensure the faces that mate with the emulators are flat and will seal well, “The devil is very much in the detail when fitting emulators if they’re to work well. There’s a lot the instructions don’t tell you. We look to see if the damper rods are central. If not the springs rub on the fork tubes creating friction and metal wear that contaminates the oil and wears the friction parts.” A lifetime of tuning suspension gives Dennis an intimate knowledge of what good suspension feels like. Not all bikes require springs but for the twisty road riding and wellloaded touring/adventure riding Dennis fits 0.7kg/mm springs (up from 0.4kg/mm, spacers to set the static sag, 67cSt oil (see sidebar) and a 130mm oil level. On a test ride in the cold of a New Plymouth winter this felt a little too stiff on the compression and rebound and the weight transfer under braking and acceleration was minimal. A quick whip out of the forks and the oil is changed to 40cSt and springs to 0.65kg/ mm. “Thicker oils are much more affected by temperature, so this lower flow rate fluid will be good for winter but you might want to put the thicker oil in during the summer” says Dennis. I like the idea of fine tuning things to how you want the bike to handle at certain times of the year – it’s just an issue from such an old suspension design. The new set up seems much more responsive in the cold winter temperatures.

But in thos e days pa int remov er comprised mainly of benzol, so I ran it on pa in t remover. The bike wasn’t fussy. I bought it for 10 pounds ($20) big money for me in th ose days. But that bike started a new life for me which ha s continued to this day. Eventually I had it brought over from Australia thinking would restore it on I e day.
