K-3 SV: THE NEW-GENERATION HELMET FOR EVERY GENERATION, FROM YOUNG RACE ENTHUSIASTS TO EXPERIENCED RIDERS LOOKING FOR COMFORT AND PERFORMANCE. SAFETY AND COMFORT The K-3 SV has been designed using Finite Elements Method (FEM) analysis, which makes it possible to perform crash test and helmet strength simulations. The high impact-resistant thermoplastic resin (HIRTH) outer shell is offered in 2 sizes, while the expanded polystyrene (EPS) inner shell, which deploys four different densities of foam in a multi-zone configuration, comes in 4 sizes.
SIZE COUNTS MAXIMUM PROTECTION WITH MINIMUM BULK In line with our AGV Extreme Standards, the helmet’s structural elements have been designed to obtain the high performance we set out to achieve while keeping size and weight to a minimum. As a result, the whole helmet is lighter and more compact despite offering substantially improved protection, ergonomics and comfort.
INCREASED PERIPHERAL VISION Side vision is greater than on traditional GT helmets thanks to the specially shaped bottom profile of the aperture, greatly enhancing active safety. Features an internal sun visor.

VENTILATION AND AERODYNAMICS Thanks to CFD Analysis (Computational fluid dynamics), the special ventilation system provides maximum airflow to the head through two front and side vents, one central vent and two extractors at the back of the helmet. What’s more, it’s also much less prone to buffeting from side winds.

Welcome to the Octoer issue of Kiwi Rider. It’s starting to get to magazine silly season. This is the time of year when the majority of manufactuers start to roll out their latest, and possibly greatest, machinery to tempt you into parting with your hard-earned cash. But wait a minute. While the new bikes, I’m sure, will be great it doesn’t mean the outgoing models are suddenly relegated to second division status. Year on year updates are generally small, so unless you absolutely ‘must have’ the latest machine then there are often bargains to be had as dealers get rid of showroom stock to make room for the coming models. A case in point is Suzuki’s RMZ250. The 2014 machine is a great bit of kit - up there with the best in class - and the differences
between the 2014 and 2015 machines is naff all. In fact, with a job-lot of Aussie-sourced 2014 machines just about to be released on NZ shores at $8999, bargains are there to be had. I have a pet hate when it comes to CEOs of big companies representing their brand in one way but doing something very different when they’re out of the limelight. This can’t be said of adventure component company Touratech’s CEO Herbert Schwarz. Herbert is most definitely working and living the dream with his wife and two sons. Jonathan Bentman reports on the Schwarz family’s recent three month tour of New Zealand aboard two Touratech-kitted BMW 1200GS machines, with one a sidecar outfit. Proof that if there’s a will there’s a way when it comes to riding motorcycles with your family. Send us any pics of your travels to admin@kiwirider.co.nz - we’d love to see and share them. LONG & GOOD
SERVICE
CONDUCT
In 2015, Suzuki’s venerable DR650SE celebrates its 20th year in production. A regular in the top five bikes sold in NZ, the DR remains as popular today as it ever has been. Few bikes are all things to all men, but the DR makes the list. So... we pestered Suzuki NZ until they agreed to give us a long termer to see just what makes the DR so popular. Oh, and we’ve got another one to give away too...
F
ifteen years. That’s how long it takes to get a Long Service and Good Conduct medal. Suzuki’s DR650SE has gained that, and some. Coming into its 20th year of production virtually unchanged (how many other bikes can claim that?), the DR’s recipe was right from the very start. As mentioned above, the DR is often in the top five of bikes of any capacity sold every month here in NZ. In fact, the DR is the bestselling bike over 500cc in New Zealand so far this year and the NZ riding public laps up over 100 new DRs every year. But it’s not just in New Zealand that the DR is so popular: in the USA Suzuki sells several thousand a year. Canada and Australia have similar appetites for the simple, single cylinder trail machine. It’d most likely be the same in Europe if it wasn’t for stringent Euro III emissions legislation, which is nigh-on impossible for a non-fuel injected, non-catalytic converterequipped machine to pass. Asking around the KR office brought a slew of happy experiences aboard a DR. The common theme running through them all was the bike’s all-round ability. And it’s this ‘jack of all trades’ nature which makes the bike popular to a diverse group of riders. For LAMS licencees, commuters, trail riders and around the world adventurers, the DR just seems to make sense. With this in mind, we thought we’d take another look at the humble DR650. The first DR650s rolled off the production line in 1990 and several updates before being completely redesigned for 1996. Since then the updates have been minor (see timeline) and the bike is essentially the same today as it was in 1996. The world of large capacity road/trail four-stroke singles seemed to hit a sweet spot and the manufacturers of such machines recognise this; whatever it was that made the likes of the Honda XR and XL range so popular in the 80s and 90s hasn’t changed. So just how does a bike launched in 1996 acquit itself in late 2014? Pretty damned well actually. The 644cc, single overhead cam engine is a simple and reliable unit. There’s no radiator to hole (just a vertically-mounted oil cooler with a modest guard around it) and the geardriven counter balancer does a good job of keeping vibration away. Power is modest but cruising at 100km/h is no problem and any faster would be tiring due to a lack of wind protection. There’s no rev-counter but there’s strong low to mid-range

The name “Thunderbird” has been used for various Triumph models since 1949. With mythical origins and cinematic fame, the Triumph Thunderbird is the only motorcycle which can truly lay claim to the title…
I
n Native American legend a Thunderbird is a mythical creature which creates thunder and wind with its enormous wings and is capable of generating storms as it flies. Typical of mythical beings, a Thunderbird is wise, yet wrathful and you really wouldn’t want to get on its bad side. Unveiled towards the end of 1949, the original 6T Thunderbird was introduced by Triumph in an effort to capture the lucrative American market. It was the bike’s designer, Edward Turner, who chose the name after staying at the Thunderbird Motel in South Carolina while traveling in the U.S. It may have been on a whim, or well thought out, but he chose the name wisely; a name which is both American in origin and a perfect metaphor for the rumbling, powerful twin. Of course it was Marlon Brando who really popularised the Triumph Thunderbird when he played Johnny Strabler, the leader of The Black Rebels Motorcycle Club in the 1953 film, ‘The Wild One’. The film itself was controversial. Johnson Motors, the American Triumph importers of the day objected to the use of Triumph motorcycles in the film and the British Board of Film Censors banned it in the UK for fourteen years. But despite all this, ‘The Wild One’ has won critical acclaim as one of the most iconic movies of all time. Brando’s character inspired the fashion choices of many; Elvis Presley and James Dean to name but two. Rock group, The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club took their name from the movie and there is even a claim that The Beatles took their name from The Beetles, the rival motorcycle club led by Lee Marvin in the movie. But that was then and the world’s moved on. So too has Triumph. When I first spied the shiny new Triumph Thunderbird LT sitting on the drive at KR HQ, I was impressed. Not just by the stunning Caspian Blue and Chrystal White paint scheme, perfectly accented by a liberal
application of chrome, but also by the size. It’s big… Of course, I’ve ridden earlier variations of the Triumph Thunderbird cruiser before and kind of knew what to expect, but the size of them is always remarkable. While Ben and Todd were clearing years’ worth of junk out of the KR garage, just so it had a place to rest for the night, I started joking about it being a scale model of a motorcycle, at 3:2 scale. But as I tipped it into the first corner, my initial thought was “holy crap!” Triumph is one motorcycle manufacturer never content to rest on its laurels and this is certainly the case with the Thunderbird range. The first of these I rode was the Thunderbird SE, four years ago. While the handling was good, that model lacked any real feedback and was a little awkward on tight roads. The next variation I rode was the Storm, two years later. I quite liked the Storm with its more minimalist styling, raw sound and improved handling. My opinion at the time was that a bike of this style and stature couldn’t possibly handle better, but for the want of ground clearance. The new Thunderbird LT however, is a step up again. The ground clearance is still lacking, but the handling is sublime. I was really taken aback by how well it turned. There’s no mistaking it’s a big and awkward bike to man-handle out of the garage, but once your feet are on the running boards, the steering is so natural, so easy and so intuitive you soon forget you are sharing momentum with 380kg of motorcycle. The flowing turns and undulating hills on the old main road, north of Orewa were the perfect location to have some relaxed fun. Even the usual tedium of the run up the Northern motorway was enjoyable, for a change. But improved handling is not the only new thing about the Thunderbird LT; almost the

“
Can we keep going for another few years?” From this question, it’s obvious that Yaron has had a great time. We’re nearing the end of our three month journey through New Zealand. We really have been living the dream. Our dream. Yannick and Yaron start school in September 2014. Apparently that means we will have to completely rethink our time management. “You’ll have to work around the school vacations and won’t be able to just head off whenever you like!” With such a dreadful prospect hanging over us, it was time to live it up one last time. We planned a trip for the entire family – kids, sidecar, everything. Herbert wanted to go to Africa, I preferred South America. We agreed on New Zealand. It’s something like in the middle of the two and the furthest place from home, almost exactly on the opposite side of the world.

That’s Ramona Schwarz speaking. Once upon a time she was Ramona Eichhorn, a restless young lass/Fraulein from East Germany. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 she didn’t just escape to the West, she carried right on going, circling the globe over the next six years, on a KTM 640 Adventure. She met a kindred spirit – her soul mate, now husband – Herbert Schwarz at the end of that trip. Herbert is founder and joint-CEO at adventure touring giant Touratech and no mean traveller in his own right. Together they carried on travelling the world, not in one big go, but concentrated chunks taken typically a month or two at a time as work allowed – and now with their travels publicised through magazine articles, books and films all disseminated through the Touratech media and
Adventure motorcycling is a growing fascination, just take a look at the global sales of BMW’s GS range for proof. Typically, though, it’s been a singles’ or couples’ market. It doesn’t have to be, Herbert Schwarz (joint-CEO at Touratech) and his journalist wife Ramona recently toured NZ for three months on a sidecar and a solo with their two pre-school sons (like real-life Wild Thornberrys)...
public relations office. Children came along, first Yannick, then Yaron, and over the years the youngsters have joined in on selected adventures too. Herbert hitched a sidecar to his bike –Ramona, as always, prefers the independence of her own bike – and together they’ve seen Canada, Corsica, Sicily, Greece, even Cuba. Only as Ramona says, with the constraints of the children’s full-time education looming it was time to enjoy one last big trip. “We also chose New Zealand because for a family trip it’s easy going, there’s still a lot of exploration, but I was against riding something like the Sahara, or Ethiopia (their last adventure), doing a hard core adventure with the kids – we wouldn’t have had a lot of fun. It was good that we had some civilisation to go back to something in case things went wrong.”
SIDECAR! The typical New Zealand family grand tour covers both islands, kind of two loops joined by that Wellington-Picton ferry link in the middle - and typically travelled in a camper van. Probably over a month. The Family Schwarz did it slightly differently. Herbert, Yannick and Yaron together on a BMW R1200GS with off-road-able sidecar (adapted to a two-seater for the boys, who are age 6 and 5) and Ramona on her own R1200GS. And no whistle-stop circuit for them, instead three full months on the road. “We often said we were so happy to be on the bike,” explains Ramona. “The kids experience the elements, the freedom of the road, it is a more essential experience for them. We have a cover for when

AJP PR4 240
EXTREME
Words: Jock McLauchlan / Photos: Geoff Osborne
Air-cooled trail or enduro machines don’t generally sport high quality suspension and braking components. AJP sees things differently and has kitted out the PR4 Extreme with some top-drawer suspension and stoppers. Jock Mc Lauchlan reports.
I
n the August addition of KR we reported on the AJP PR5 Extreme, an excellent bike that punches well above its weight, especially considering its price point. This month we test its smaller capacity air/oil-cooled brother, the AJP PR4 Extreme which at first glance looks to be another awesome little bike with a high-level specification list, an even cheaper price tag of $8995. The chassis and general lay-out are much the same as on the PR5, with a solid aluminium midsection that includes the swingarm mount and an aluminium swingarm. The tubular steel frame headstock and lower engine cradle is bolted to it. The removable subframe is steel tubing. Fuel is carried behind the engine and under the seat, where the airbox is normally positioned on other bikes. The fuel tank itself is opaque and so the fuel level can easily be seen at a glance. The airbox, a decent sized battery for the electric start and most other electrics are located up around the main frame back-bone behind the steering head, under a plastic cover. This gives the illusion of a conventionally placed fuel tank and is nicely shaped to enhance the ergonomics. To my eyes the air-cooled PR4 is a handsome looking machine with a host of high spec purple/ red anodised components. It definitely looks the part and comes as standard fitted with a 260mm Galfer Wave front disc, a Sachs shock and Marzocchi USD forks. Reikon supplies the oversized handle bars, the clutch assembly and there are bling alloy foot pegs and gear shifter. I might be stating the obvious, but riding the PR4 is quite a different experience to taking a spin on the PR5. The PR4 produces quite a bit less power from the smaller capacity air-cooled motor, as one might expect. On top of this, the chassis balance is opposite to the PR5. This means the PR4 rides lower from a softer shock at the rear and higher at the front - with what feels like the same forks but on a lighter machine. This all makes great sense to me because the PR4, with the smaller 240 motor, is clearly aimed at younger, lighter and less experienced riders. The 240’s power is modest but in-line with other bikes of a similar size and extremely user friendly with it. The air-cooled lump has a decent amount of torque, is flexible for its capacity and is very linear in its delivery of power and torque. The engine and exhaust note is very quiet, which is something I do like, but the muffler does look small and restrictive... so there may be gains in power to be made in that department, not that I would ever suggest opening it up a little… Anyway, the type of power it has is perfect for learning on, for novice to intermediate level trail riders and is

Taking the bike on an overseas tour, or buying or selling overseas? Want someone who knows bikes and knows how they should be handled?
Then call us-we have years of experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US....
