K-3 SV: THE NEW-GENERATION HELMET FOR EVERY GENERATION, FROM YOUNG RACE ENTHUSIASTS TO EXPERIENCED RIDERS LOOKING FOR COMFORT AND PERFORMANCE. SAFETY AND COMFORT The K-3 SV has been designed using Finite Elements Method (FEM) analysis, which makes it possible to perform crash test and helmet strength simulations. The high impact-resistant thermoplastic resin (HIRTH) outer shell is offered in 2 sizes, while the expanded polystyrene (EPS) inner shell, which deploys four different densities of foam in a multi-zone configuration, comes in 4 sizes.

SIZE COUNTS MAXIMUM PROTECTION WITH MINIMUM BULK In line with our AGV Extreme Standards, the helmet’s structural elements have been designed to obtain the high performance we set out to achieve while keeping size and weight to a minimum. As a result, the whole helmet is lighter and more compact despite offering substantially improved protection, ergonomics and comfort.

INCREASED PERIPHERAL VISION Side vision is greater than on traditional GT helmets thanks to the specially shaped bottom profile of the aperture, greatly enhancing active safety. Features an internal sun visor.

VENTILATION AND AERODYNAMICS Thanks to CFD Analysis (Computational fluid dynamics), the special ventilation system provides maximum airflow to the head through two front and side vents, one central vent and two extractors at the back of the helmet. What’s more, it’s also much less prone to buffeting from side winds.

YAMAHA SR400

Modifying bikes has long been the reserve of those with greasy hands and something that’s been frowned upon by the manufacturers with antitampering measures. Tides are turning and Yamaha is pushing the simple but fun SR400 as the basis for modification. Good, we say.

Welcome to the September issue of Kiwi Rider. With the lighter evenings we’re seeing more bikes out on the road. Ok, so we’re not out of winter yet but the signs are there. New bikes are creeping out of darkened design rooms the world over. The Europeans seem to be early this year and have come out all guns blazing on the enduro front. Ex-editor Jon Bentman has been on a whistlestop tour to report on the European vision of the 2015 enduro machine. Turn to page 88 for all the latest machinery from Beta, KTM, Husqvarna and Sherco. After Suzuki showed their hand with the 2015 RM-Zs last month, Honda and Kawasaki have revealed details of their ‘15 machines too. It’s all happening on the dirt front that’s for sure.

On the road side, we’ve taken another look at the DL1000 V-Strom this month. Coming away from the NZ media launch impressed with the new machine, we managed to lever a bike out of Suzuki for a longer test. Half a dozen different riders and a whistlestop tour of the North and South Islands have shown it to be the bike we thought it to be. Turn to page 28 for more. On a slightly different front, it seems like manufacturers have been telling us not to modify our bikes for a whole load of years. Things must be changing and they’re starting to embrace modifying. A case in point is the Yamaha SR400. It’s a great bike in its own respect but has found a new lease of life as the basis for building a special. And that’s how Yamaha is pushing it. Refreshing to say the least. Talking of modifiying... turn to page 54 for a rather nicely modified Yamaha RD350LC. Am I a heretic? Decide for yourself. Enjoy the mag.

REAL ESTATE COMPANY BACKS BARRY SHEENE CLASSIC RACES

NEWS

E

xpanding national realtor Mike Pero Real Estate is the naming rights sponsor for the 2014 Barry Sheene Motorcycle Classic at Hampton Downs. Scheduled for Labour Weekend (October 24-26), the Barry Sheene Classic has become the largest International meeting in New Zealand with 50 Australians competing against the New Zealand Team for the Trans-Tasman Trophy. Mike Pero Real Estate was formed in 2011 and has rapidly expanded across New Zealand with more than 50 outlets from Invercargill to Northland. The company offers a commission rate of 2.95% – less than most other national brands. In his youth Pero won 22 New Zealand racing titles during his 1980’s career. “I am very proud to be the major sponsor of the ‘Barry Sheene’, it’s a premier historic race meeting, New Zealand’s largest road race meeting with over 300 riders,” Pero says. “Barry Sheene and Kenny Roberts were my heroes when I started racing. Barry was a larger than life character, a cheeky cigarette-smoking Cockney who challenged the establishment but delivered the goods on the racetrack.” Sheene won the European F750 title in 1973, numerous British championships and the World 500 Championship in 1976 and 1977. His gregarious, playboy lifestyle attracted huge media attention in England and he was the first rider to attract major sponsorship to

road-racing. Sheene and his family retired to Australia’s Gold Coast in 1984 and he worked as a motorsport TV commentator and property developer. He died in 2003 after being diagnosed with cancer. The 2014 Barry Sheene Classic will honour his memory as well as race machines from the 1930s through to 1989. Not only is he sponsoring the event, Pero will also be competing on a Yamaha TZ250W. A special feature of the event will be a focus

on ‘women racers’ with international guest Maria Costello MBE from England. Maria was the first woman racer to podium at the Isle of Man TT, received her MBE ‘for services to motorcycling’ in 2009 and published her autobiography in 2012, ‘Queen of Bikers’. She will be joined by 20 women racers from Australia and New Zealand, including top-level Australian Sophie Lovett.

CFMOTO has added to its urban sport range with the release of the new 150NK. Details are sparse but it appears the Hangzhou-based manufacturer has fitted its watercooled SOHC fuel-injected 150cc four-stroke motor into a trellis-type steel tube frame, added inverted forks, mono-shock rear suspension and 17-inch wheels shod with low profile radial tyres and topped it off with some swoopy bodywork from Kiska Design. Stay tuned.

PRODUCTS / ROAD SLIPPERY CUSTOMER A high-performance semisynthetic lubricant, Ipone R4000RS 10W40 Synthesis is recommended for modern high performance four-stroke machines. Ipone says R4000RS has excellent shear stability and its low volatility reduces oil consumption, while its high lubricating power reduces friction. The formula contains extreme pressure modifiers for excellent lubrication of integrated gearboxes and the oil is compatible with catalytic converters. The viscosity is suitable for a very wide range of temperatures: SAE 10W for starts in very cold weather (recommended for hydraulic tappets), and SAE 40 for high engine temperatures. Distributor: Nationwide Accessories Price: 1L $29.00, 4L $79.00

LADIES ONLY Neo’s Cat Ladies boot delivers a female-specific fit assisted by an elasticated calf, but otherwise the same sort of features as Neo’s boots for men. That means Lorica construction, a Reissa waterproof membrane, reinforced shin, ankle and gear-pad protection, a preformed inner and mid-sole for added comfort and fit, plus a Velcro and zip closure. The boots also get low-light reflectives and an anti-slip rubber sole. We’re promised comfort, protection, style and value – apparently these boots have it all. Distributor: Forbes & Davies Ltd Size: 38-43 Price: $189

EBC V-PAD EBC V-Pads have a new, longer lasting formula that contains over 30% copper by weight to form what EBC says is a world first semi-sintered pad that will deliver powerful braking and longer wear life when compared to fully sintered pads. The new heat fusion process bonds the V-Pad compound under heat and pressure (similar to the full sintering process) to allow the wear life enhancing addition of copper and carbon particles. The manufacturer says the new pads combine the long life typical of a fully sintered pad with the low brake disc abrasion (low rotor galling) features of an organic pad making these ideal for all types of brake rotor material. V-Pads are not designed for any form of track use. V-Pads are fully TUV tested and German KBA approved. Distributor: Nationwide Accessories Price: From $47

SCHUBERTH C3 PRO The new Schuberth C3 Pro represents a step forward for the German manufacturer, who claims to lead the premium modular helmet market. Four new features set the Schuberth C3 Pro apart from its competition: the C3 Pro has a new lip/spoiler, a new integrated antenna for greater communication range, a new venting style and a scheme for improved airflow, plus a redeveloped interior. And it’s even quieter than the C3 – a combo which could mean this is the most technologicallyadvanced helmet ever created. Distributor: Northern Accessories Colours: Gloss black, matte black and gloss white Price: $1199

ULTRA-CLEAN We’re told Tirox Ultra Motorcycle Cleaner uses proprietary RRT (Radical Reflective Technology) to penetrate and extract deepdown dirt, to make your bike shine brighter and deeper and allow wax to adhere better and last longer. We’re told Tirox works great on wheels, windscreens and swingarms and will not harm unprotected metals, anodising, leather, plastics and composites. We’re promised you’ll get up to 30 washes from one bottle, compared to only three or four with the others, and that it’s ultrasafe on all new and old materials used on motorcycles, ATVs, etc. Distributor: Dold Industries Ltd Info: www.dold.co.nz Price: $19.95

JUICED UP This CTECK Battery Charger Tool Box Kit is on sale – normally $239, it’s now $149 for a limited time. CTEK says it’s the creator of the smartest battery chargers in the world, which means if your bike has a flat battery, or you’re not riding it over winter and want to keep its battery charged, the CTEK MXS 3.8 seven-stage fully automated battery charger could be the perfect choice. The kit contains the MXS 3.8 battery charger plus a rubber protection bumper and eyelet comfort indicator — everything you need for safe and effective charging without having to disconnect the battery. As an added bonus the Tool Box Kit also includes a handy Stainless Steel Pro Multi-Tool. Distributor: Forbes & Davies Ltd Price: On special at $149

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES Okay it’s nearly Spring – but you still might want to try this doublewhammy treatment. Start with Sno-Seal beeswax to prevent water from penetrating your leather gear to keep you warm and dry, and extend the life of your boots and clothing. Then follow up with a Silicone Water-Guard aerosol. We’re promised this is the highestquality water repellent available, and it’s safe to use on all types of fabric, suede and brushed leather. Wonder if it’d keep KR’s harassed editor dry? Seems he’s not keen to spray it on his winterwhite skin, despite the promise that it’s environmentally safe and doesn’t use chlorinated solvents or propellents. like to think I am bold enough to tweak the nose of danger and to laugh in the face of adversity, but this particular outing, to the Kahurangi Lighthouse, was destined to demonstrate that “safety first” is a worthwhile idea. The Kahurangi Lighthouse, near the top left corner of the South Island, is seldom if ever visited by motorcyclists, but is popular with fishermen on quads. Information on riding conditions to get there is hard to find, but may be summarised briefly thus: Beware of the quicksand! The route sounds straightforward; from Collingwood in Golden Bay head north on a sealed road to Pakawau, west to Whanganui Inlet, and finally south on a gravel road to the road’s end at the charming DoC campsite at the Anatori River, and then keep going.

If your destination is remote and all available intelligence suggests the trip is fraught with danger, taking great care should be your philosophy according to Dave Britten. 22

After crossing the Anatori, maps show a 7km 4WD track to the Turimawiwi River, which then heads inland alongside the river. Instead, to get to the lighthouse you head the few hundred metres through sand hills to the beach and then follow the shoreline south to the lighthouse, what looks like an easy 10km further along. How hard could it be…? Allow me to explain... quicksand. That doesn’t sound particularly like the terrain for heavyweight adventure bikes, so each of our intrepid band of explorers took their lightest trail bikes. There was John (400EXC), Peter (WR250F) Grant (WR250R), Julie (XT225), and me (NXR125). The warnings given were for the final two rivers (Anweka and Big), where they cross the beach to the ocean, and the advice was only to attempt a crossing at Spring low tide. As it happens, the coast near the lighthouse seldom has a decently

low tide during daylight hours, but by the good fortune that sometimes comes the way of the virtuous, a record low tide was forecast on the early morning of our ride, so we expected a safety factor of the extra half metre in height that the sea would retreat. Little did we know… We departed the Collingwood Camping Ground in darkness, but the sun was rising behind us as we quietly made our way to the West Coast. The shingle road through the Whanganui Inlet is as narrow and as sinuous as any I know, but on our small bikes it was an easy ride. Sometimes in bush, sometimes on causeways across the muddy inlets, we twisted and turned our way to the first challenge at the Anatori River. Challenge accepted. A firm stony bottom and axle deep water meant the challenge was barely worth the name, and the 4WD track from the far side turned out

The big update of the V-Strom has been eagerly awaited. Some thought it would never happen. It’s the one bike in the office everyone has been wanting to have a play on, in fact the editor came back from the Napier-based NZ launch spouting superlatives; and one guy even flew from Aussie to have a go. This is what the KR office at large thinks of the 2014 Suzuki V-Strom. Oh, and a film director took it around the South Island too. I

was following Geoff up State highway 16. He was laden with heavy camera gear, riding the new Suzuki V-Strom 1000 and I couldn’t help noticing how composed and effortless the big Strom looked as it flowed through the turns and ate up the straights. It appeared to waft along on boundless torque, as happy as a big V8 on a Sunday drive and all the while it looked crisp and stable in the turns too. Looking at it devour the road up ahead of me, I was a little envious, jealous even, and excited knowing that my turn to play on the big V-twin was coming soon. Sure enough a few kilometres and photos later it was my turn to have a blast. I hopped on thinking the colour of our Suzuki photo bike was less than impressive. Frankly to me the beige colour is seriously under-whelming. Sitting down the seat is comfortable, nicely shaped and a manageable height from the ground for most people. The bars are wellplaced and the whole ergonomic layout is nice. I like the three-position, easily adjustable on-the-fly, screen which is quieter than most, although I noticed some buffeting around my helmet. The dash is a two screen LCD and analogue rev counter unit that tells you all you need to know, and more! It even flashed up an ice warming one cold morning… like I hadn’t noticed it was cold. Start moving and it doesn’t take long to know this is a terrific engine. While it isn’t a huge top end powerhouse, the flexibility and all around usability of this very smooth, torquey motor will make friends with all who ride it. The fuelling is perfect, it’s easy to ride and gets the job done surprisingly quickly while almost going unnoticed doing so. A true indication of the V-Strom’s effortless torque came when I had to pillion my mate home, after our KTM 1190 decided it wanted to stay where it was… The big Strom handled the 180kg+ load with ease. The headlight shining a little high was the only real difference. This Suzuki has a very light feel and truly effortless turn in. In fact it falls so quickly into the turn that I initially found it slightly unnerving after some of the slower turning bikes I have ridden lately. But it just needed more time in the saddle for me to adjust to its nimbleness. It is a stable and relaxed bike in the turn although not as planted and confidence-inspiring in feel as some. The suspension at both ends is very plush. I found it handled all on-road bumps very well in a comfortable and relaxed way on the standard settings. I never felt it bottom out at either end, although I never pushed it to extremes. The brakes are strong. The front in particular is powerful with great feel and stopping performance. Clutch action and shifting are excellent.

Wrenchmonkees? There are some wild and wacky names out in bike custom land, with a Danish outfit calling itself ‘Wrenchmonkees’ currently top of the heap. In Australia, Rod Hunwick, Dare Jennings and Nigel Houston-Begg started Deus Ex Machina in 2006 – a sort of ‘high brow’ version of custom bike art, and around the world there are numerous other examples. Owners have been modifying their motorcycles ever since the earliest days of powered two-wheelers but it really took off in the late 1940s, early 50s with returned American servicemen chopping up Harleys, Triumphs, BSA, Nortons and so on to make them lighter and more elemental.

With a growing trend towards motorcycle customisation in which motorcycles from the 1970s feature prominently, Yamaha appears to have pulled a master stroke born of expediency.

asting around for a 1970s ‘look’ to meet the demand for easily customisable bikes, Yamaha realised it actually had the real thing still in production – the SR400. In fact, apart from a pause between 2008 and 2010, the 399cc SR has been in Yamaha’s domestic Japanese market model line-up since its introduction in 1978, the same year the 499cc SR500 was released. So rather than creating a 1970s styling job around a modern machine, Yamaha decided to do what a vociferous group of German SR fans had been begging for since the SR500 went out of production in 1999. That was to make the Japanese-market-only short-stroke SR400 available internationally. Yamaha is pitching the SR400 at urban youth who are interested in customising old bikes. With the SR400 they have got an ‘old’ bike that is actually brand new. New wheel bearings, new wiring loom, new engine, new transmission, frame, brakes and so on. So they don’t have to rebuild an old pile of junk and then customise it, they can start with a nice fresh canvas. The Product Bulletin for the international model launch of the SR400 carries the slogan: “35 years heritage. Built to customise.” This is a serious about-face: for years owners have been exhorted not to modify their motorcycles because it would breach the manufacturer’s warranty. Not anymore. Well, at least not with the SR400 Yamaha. That is probably strong testimony to the durability of the model, which started life as a 500. The engine was designed with manual starting as the only option, via a kick-start lever on the right-hand side. This was for the XT500 trail bike in 1976. Yamaha could have done a little re-design work and fitted the engine with electric start but decided against that in the interests of authenticity. With no ‘electric leg’, owners must fold out the kick-start lever, turn the engine over until they feel the 87mm diameter piston coming up onto compression, pull in the decompression lever mounted under the clutch lever on the left-hand handlebar, ease the piston over compression, release the decompressor, let the kick-start lever return to the top of its stroke, then kick strongly on the starter, and keep on pumping down until it reaches the bottom of its stroke. Don’t kick at it, kick down on it. Generally the engine fired into life at the second or third kick when starting from cold, and we usually got it going first kick when warmed up. Helping here is the modern transistorised ignition – XT and SR500 owners would have loved this if they’d had it in 1978 – and computerised electronic fuel-injection. The throttle body is 34mm diameter, same as the choke size of the Mikuni VM34SS carburettor used on the early SR500s and the BST34 Mikuni used on SR400s from 1987 to 2000. With the engine happily idling, disengage the clutch, click the left-foot lever down into first gear, ease out the clutch lever with a minimum of throttle and you are rolling. The engine has sufficient torque that it will pull away from a standstill at idle and once rolling the performance is more than adequate for learners,

In the 1990s, a number of Japanese motorcyclists, weary of the ‘racer replica’ bikes on offer, started restoring and modifying older Japanese (and in some cases, British) machines. As a result there are numerous small custom bike houses in Japan. In Europe, there are a handful of Japanese bikes that have attracted a cult-like following, with Yamaha’s XT/SR500 the best example, with the Kawasaki W650/800 steadily gaining ground. Realising there are significant numbers of potential customers who hanker for an older bike but really don’t want to be bothered with the time and money involved in a restoration, Yamaha has hit the ground running with its 1970s SR400. Its distributors around the world have been encouraged to collaborate with custom shops and at last year’s EICMA show in Milan Yamaha not only wheeled out the fuel-injected SR400, it also revealed the result of its cooperation with Danish specials builder Wrenchmonkees – a one-off SR400.

“OK, I’ll avoid the obvious Native American puns and clichés in the review of the Indian Chieftain and concentrate solely on the merits of the bike,” I said. “Good” replied the Ed, already groaning at the bad puns flowing towards him down the phone line. We also agreed that with the announcement of the first Kiwi dealership and news of the first bikes gracing NZ imminent, it was timely to throw a leg over a new Indian for a burn around KR’s ‘West Island HQ’. The bike was ready and waiting, fresh from its first service, when I called in to collect it at the stylish Fortitude Valley ‘factory’ dealership in inner Brisbane. The modern building features Victory bikes downstairs and the Indian range up - and is very flash. After a quick refresher on some of the bike’s control functions, I was heading for the hills west of town wearing a grin almost as wide as Oreti Beach at low tide. I guess like anyone who has been to half a dozen Burt Munro challenges, seen the World’s Fastest Indian and has a library of works by Roger Donaldson like me, then Oreti isn’t far away - no matter where you ride an Indian motorcycle. I did wonder what Ol’ Burt would make of ‘all this’ as I climbed the hills towards Mt Nebo. He’d probably want to strip it down and re-engineer it, but then he’d probably be better off starting with the ‘naked’ Classic or Vintage models from the new range because this ‘Bagger’ is absolutely jam-packed with extras and touring accoutrements. Comfort is the order of the day and it’s not just about the plush saddle. The windscreen on the Chieftain is not only ‘the first handlebar mounted power screen’ as Indian claim, but it’s also simply one of the best on any bike, with around 100mm of adjustment available via a pair of buttons on the left switch block. It’s very easy to dial in the optimum height, depending on whether you want some wind in your face or want to sit in the ‘bubble’. Being able to deflect most of the wind noise also means you can get the best from the modern entertainment system. Bluetooth a phone or hardwire a music device (via a USB connection in the glove box in the fairing) and it’s possible to crank the volume and select tracks and sources on the cruise, or from a control pad on the LH switch block. Additional buttons over on the RH block operate the Cruise control. It’s easy to engage

If LC specials – all wider wheels and linkage suspension – seem the work of heretics to you, then read this article. This UK-based special reveals there’s an integrity and purpose to these specials that’s as core to the LC ethos as with any standard restoration.

C

uriously it’s only when you sit on John Hay’s LC that you truly ‘get it’. You can admire it, you can understand the mechanical and technological updates, but it’s only when you sit in the saddle that everything falls into place. John Hay’s LC, maybe not surprisingly, is in effect a de facto 2011 Yamaha RDLC. Of course it’s grown to become a 500 (not uncommon in model development), but what truly hits you when you sit on it is how taught it all feels. The forks and shock only give slightly, in the modern way – they don’t buckle under your weight the way old LC suspension used to. The period Giuliari seat is suitably firm as well. And the combination of flat-ish Renthal alloy

bars, ISR levers and bespoke rearsets all combine to give a precision feel that no LC ever had. Yet the tank, the frame, the sidepanels, even the indicators, they’re all there to remind you this is fundamentally an LC. If you never understood LC specials before, and (like this writer) thought you preferred them standard, then sit on this bike and you’ll understand the whole hopup scene in an instant. It’s a revelation. It stands to reason this isn’t John’s first LC. His first came in 1981, a ‘mars bar’ black 350, only his after a longish wait on the order books. And like many LCs back then it was stolen before John had a chance to fully enjoy it. So with the insurance pay-out along came a ‘threestripe’ black 350 which lasted a good while

longer before being sold. Like many, John then strayed from two-strokes for a while before being tempted back by an RD500. Two years later that was sold, in favour of a Suzuki Bandit, then a succession of no less than five Triumph Speed Triples. Notice how those four-strokes are essentially naked roadsters... “Yeah, they’re exactly like a big LC, they ride almost the same, they just don’t have that sound!” says John. Even then John kept the faith, for a period of eight years he rode a white LC350 as a second bike, before selling it to a mate. So the LC special we see before us now started life about eight years ago. Only, as is the way with specials, it started as a completely different LC and

Words: Jonathan Bentman / Photos: Beta, Husqvarna, KTM, Sherco.

The European enduro manufacturers were all on the same schedule this year as far as 2015 model launches went. KTM, Husqvarna, Beta and Sherco all put on launch tests within just three weeks in June. Ex-editor Jon Bentman ping-ponged his way between all four to bring you the latest on the Euro-vision.

KTM 2015 What do we know?

K

TM has the most extensive, most comprehensively developed motocross and enduro ranges on the planet. Nobody – it seems – can touch them, they have the job nailed. And the sales stats are there to support them – last year their global sales were up 15.6% (Y-to-Y) despite a continued and considerable slowdown in the 88

KIWI RIDER

off-road scene which has seen the combined US and European market shrink to half its former size in just eight years. In 2013, KTM even took on more staff boosting their HQ number by 150 to 1823, of which 280 are dedicated to R&D. With a 716.4 million Euro turnover, yes, KTM are doing the job right.

What’s new for 2015? Not a lot, is the short answer. This is as quiet a year for updates as we’ve ever seen from the men in orange. There’s a new exhaust muffler on the four-strokes, a new speedo, a switch to

Giant for the rims (satin black), new grips and new handguards. And there’s now some white in the bold new graphics. That’s very nearly it. There’s some detail to be found, though. For the two-strokes, the 250/300s get shorter gearing to the starter motor (should help reliability) and they’ve improved the powervalve actuation there – it comes in 200rpm later apparently (for more torque). There’s a smaller battery too, for less weight. For the four-strokes, the 250EXC-F gets a longer sixth gear for lower revs on road work, all models get a revised clutch basket and there

The riding was suitably epic and so often you only went where you did because the rider in front did first. That plan didn’t always work, on one huge rock step we wasted the plastics, an engine case, an exhaust and a radiator over six bikes. A few hundred yards later another big smash saw two men down and KTM’s ever-resourceful R&D guru ‘Barni’ Plazotta bandaging both riders and bikes. It didn’t stop there – in fact it didn’t stop until we reached the hotel at the end of the ride. An authentic extreme experience? Certainly.

And the stars of the show?

are new o-rings on the suction (oil) pump. So only minor changes to their off-road line-up; maybe KTM feels safe in the bet that it’s that far ahead of the opposition that no damage will be done. Come the 2016 model year, though, there’ll be a major overhaul of their motocross line-up, and for 2017 the enduros will be heavily revised too. We can be assured there’s no clock watching in KTM’s R&D department…

The test Days in the office don’t come much harder. With

Easily the 350EXC, it had the measure of the terrain even given the most unskillful of rider inputs. The extra punch it has over the 250EXC-F was very telling in this environment, not necessarily where you’d expect (on the climbs) but battling its way through some of the treacherous slimy rocky stream beds. The 200EXC also impressed. I’m getting to think this model is very sensitive to its jetting. Sorted by KTM for the 1500 – 3000m altitude it was running on the rich end of the spectrum so was nicely torquey and easy to ride. Much better than previous years when we’ve ridden the 200 with (probably) a lean set-up that seems to just snap your arms out of their sockets. Lean, the 200EXC is like a hyped-up rabid 125. I liked the 250EXC too, the power-valve changes do seem to have made a difference; it felt easier to control – even more like a 300 now – and its super-light footwork was much needed in the tricky conditions. The others – well, bike rotations were a problem on this launch as there were obvious favourites for this kind of terrain and getting a fellow journo to give up a hot ride was damned near impossible. Consequently I got lumbered with the 500EXC for longer than I cared for. It’s an awesome bike and is pretty good even in this going – but to a point. I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve damaged a KTM in a decade of their launches but I did it good, as Barni will attest – and that liquid metal, why that’s great stuff, eh? When we finished I ached, the small gash across my nose would heal, the tightness in my shoulder had better wear off soon, I hoped. But I appreciated the ride, I was ‘tested’. And the revised graphics for the 2015 bikes – I like them much better than on last year’s bikes. I like the look of the Six Days model even more, and looking at the spec on those, and given the small price premium they ask, I’d be seriously considering one of those – and it’d be the 350 for me.

The verdict

the Red Bull Romaniacs course directors as our guides and their playground, the Carpathian Mountains, wide open to us, KTM served up a ten hour extreme enduro experience. Perhaps they figured with not much change to the bikes they best at least give us a ride to remember. And after that ten hours I figured the pain in my shoulder, the sensitive elbow, the aching back, had just days to recover before I was due back on duty for the next launch. The bikes I broke, well, KTM had less than 24 hours to sort those before the next group arrived for their torture test.

KTM’s strength in this sector is they have a bike for every occasion. A 125/200 for the youth/ small. For tight technical going the small and rev-hungry 250EXC-F is an utter peach, while if you want for sheer brutality then the 450EXC can bite whole seconds out of any scratch time – or you, if you’re careless. Between these come the mountain-scaling 250/300s two-strokes and the big 500 for lazy days on the long trails. But for most of the people most of the time the 350EXC is just so right, so intuitive. Around the Romaniacs course where there was so much plastic – and flesh – getting scratched and broken, the 350 was jealously guarded. Tough never came so easy.

T

owards the end of last year I was fortunate enough to attend the Australasian launch of the all-new 2014 YZ250F at Toowoomba, west of Brisbane. Now, when I say all-new, I mean completely re-designed from the ground up. By now most of you will have seen, if not ridden, the new Yam that is now fuel-injected for the first time and has the backwards motor like its big brother, the YZ450F. When I say backwards, I mean rearward facing. The airbox is where the fuel tank normally is and that feeds the injector directly below into the cylinder, and the exhaust exits out the back and then wraps around the cylinder before heading rearwards again, towards the muffler. The fuel tank is now down low, under the seat. At the launch briefing Yamaha stressed the importance of mass-centralisation and the effort its engineers had put into achieving that goal. Looking at the

bike it is easy to see that this wasn’t just talk. Where possible all the heavy components are packed as closely as possible to the middle of the bike and as low as feasible. Obvious examples are the muffler, which is pulled right in and starts above the swingarm pivot, and the fuel tank, therefore fuel weight is now under your arse. Getting weight low and as centralised as practically possible is all about giving a light ‘feel’ to the bike and improving handling balance. I came away from the launch very impressed with the new 250F and with these main thoughts… first up the YZ felt light, it is, at only 105kg wet. The ergos are really great, big-bloke friendly and the suspension felt awesome too. It was fast, but the Yamaha CDR factory team were sending us out with a possible nine different maps to try from the YZ MX Power Tuner and Toowoomba is at 700 metres

When launched in Australia, Jock McLauchlan found the new YZ-F grunty and agile-handling but with a turn-in not to his liking. A bit of tweaking for NZ conditions and our man has come away impressed by the 2014 YZ250F.

altitude, which must have robbed some power. So this all got me thinking, what would the engine really feel like to NZ buyers with just the standard map? Because, if you don’t buy the Power Tuner, or have access to one, that’s all you get. And lastly I wasn’t completely happy with turn-in feel and feedback from the front wheel. So, back to the present in NZ and starting with the DOHC four-valve 250cc liquid-cooled single with a 13.5:1 compression ratio… yes, high compression makes itself felt at kick-start time. The lever demands a decent boot, not just a wee slap at the lever like some 250s. But once running, the Yam is really responsive, fast and grunty. To my mind it makes power like a 450 in that it is strong right through the rev range with plenty of torque. It always feels like it’s in the power and I didn’t feel I was ever waiting for it to build revs to reach the fast zone. I think

the power delivery is comfortably the gruntiest and easiest to ride fast 250 four-stroke of the year. The only thing it really lacks is extreme top-end power and, frankly, I didn’t miss it because the YZ-F will just haul the next gear, no problem. Honestly, the engine feels better and faster than the very best setting I tried in Oz (the pro map!) The cable clutch has a light lever action and has a nice smooth take up. It works well. Likewise the six-speed gearbox is a great unit, upgraded this year with a new shift system for improved power continuity, which results in better drive. Initial turn in feel was the big question mark for me back in Oz. With the 26-degree castor angle you know it will turn in fast, like a rabbit on the run. In Australia all the bikes had the steering stems set very tight, which gave a stiff steering damper effect. So here in NZ I set the steer

With Gas Gas celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Spanish factory has been busy producing some special bikes to mark the occasion. Jock swung his leg over the EC300 Factory Replica.

as Gas New Zealand air-freighted in a 30th anniversary EC300 Factory Replica Edition and let us loose on it to give you the heads up on this limited edition machine. Just 250 numbered units will be produced and some of those will be available to lucky NZ buyers just about the time this goes to print. Just a matter of hours after the Gasser touched down in NZ, KR met up with Craig Brown, Gas Gas technical manager at the Woodhill Forest Sandpit bike park for our ride. The EC 300 was still having vital fluids installed when we arrived, but by the time I had suited up we were all good to go. Before I set off, Craig made sure I understood this particular EC300 had never even been started and he didn’t know what the jetting or suspension would be like. After all, NZ is different to Spain and this bike is set up for its factory riders in their local conditions. I took a moment to admire the beast. All Gas Gas enduro bikes look super cool and this factory replica raises the bar even higher. There’s bling everywhere; from the FMF pipe and muffler, through the new decals, high-end Marzocchi fork and Reiger shock, 260mm Galfer front disc, Renthal fat bar and superspox rear sprocket, to the grippy seat cover, the list goes on. It looks fantastic. Craig needn’t have worried about the starting, that’s for sure. Even with my first half-hearted kick, the 300 was running sweetly. In fact, I was very impressed with the ease with which the 300 started all day long. It always started first or second kick, in or out of gear; it was a breeze. So there’s no clutch drag. I don’t think you will not miss e-start on this bike, but you will notice the lighter feel of not having that high up battery weight. Out on the trail it quickly became apparent this is the best Gas Gas 300 I’ve ever ridden. The motor is strong and pulls hard all the way through the rev range, from idle until max revs with no real two-stroke power band sensation. There’s just a seamless, torquey, growth in thrust that is entirely usable, yet quite responsive and will have you blasting down your favourite trail bloody quickly indeed.

Taking the bike on an overseas tour, or buying or selling overseas? Want someone who knows bikes and knows how they should be handled?

Then call us-we have years of experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US.... ALTERATIONS

t’s not an easy thing for a business to even last a decade, what with the internet and cheap off-shore imports these days, so running a small New Zealand business for forty years must verge on a minor miracle. Well, that’s how an outsider might see it, but for the Wilson family from Hawkes Bay, forty years of Jet Leathers business is the very thing they will be celebrating in September this year. Jet Leathers was created by Tony Wilson way back in 1974 during a time many consider the golden age of motorcycling in this country. The company grew to its peak in the late ‘80s when the company had a staff of 11, and a customer-base of well over a hundred bike shops throughout NZ. Business founder Tony took a well-earned retirement in 2004 leaving son Mike to continue at the helm. “Back then it was all about meeting the demand for each shop so it was mainly just standard styles in all the sizes,” says Mike. In the 1990s, he adds, “When the New Zealand Government allowed parallel importing and at the same time started importing cheap cars, the Motorcycle industry took a huge hit and bike shops began closing over the following 10 years.” “We needed to find a different way to do business as the market was quickly filling up with imported leather gear, to a now much smaller market’’, says Mike. Before the advent of the internet, Mike created a mail-out pamphlet, targeting customers directly through magazine advertising, focusing on the custom-fit aspect of the industry. “It seemed to me that a large percentage of our customers after 1995 were the ‘plus 35 year olds’ who may or may not have been able to buy their size off the rack in the local bike shop (that’s if their town still even had a local bike shop). The catalogue days are well gone and our marketing is now done through our Jet leathers Facebook page or the website www.jetleathers.com . Nowadays Mike focusses, solely on the custom fitting aspect of Jet Leathers. “Auckland Harley is the only bike shop in New Zealand that I still wholesale to, as 98% of the time I am dealing direct with customers on a one on one basis for made to measure gear.” Biker vests are the mainstay of the business as well as men’s and women’s jackets, riding pants, oilskins and they offer New Zealand’s fastest repair/alteration service on all brands of bike gear whether it be leather or synthetics. It’s heartening to see a Kiwi company that beats anything any overseas company can offer with quality gear, and its ability to custom-fit is still appreciated. Forty years is a long time for any business and Mike and the team are proud to have reached the milestone. Jet Leathers products have stood the test of time and it seems that the Jet Leathers business will continue to as well.
