KIWI RIDER

Hello...

t’s not often a motorcycle manufacturer releases a replica of their race bike, not of a MotoGP class machine anyway. In this instance I’m talking about Honda and its RC213V-S, which has recently been launched to those with enough money. In fact, this is as close as you can get to a true MotoGP machine without leasing a factory MotoGP bike. In the interest of longevity and reliability a few things have had to be changed, such as swapping out the pneumatically-operated valves for good-old fashioned spring operated items. After all, who’d service the air valves? Not your local dealer that’s for sure. And what about the the cost? Well, as is always the case in the spirit of truly expensive items... if you have to ask the price you can’t afford it. But we’re talking in the region of 11 Honda Fireblades... Turn to page 14 for more on the most exclusive production motorcycle money can buy. There have been calls for Kawasaki to produce a large capacity version of its Versys for a good few years. It was worth the wait according to our Rodney. Fast, flexible and a superb all-rounder, the Versys 1000 makes a rather

good bike for the variety of road surfaces we find in New Zealand. See page 28. Inspired by GSX-R1100s with no fairings and wide bars, it was Triumph who started the factory street-fighter thing with its Speed Triple. True to its origins, the latest Speed Triple 1050 R is just as raw and exciting as its great grand daddy, except that its blessed with Ohlins suspension and ABS - both worthwhile additions to a great package. Turn to page 36 for more on the Hinckley triple. Since being taken over by KTM, Husqvarna’s range of enduro machines has been getting plenty of praise. The rear-linkage type suspension give a very different feel to the PDS-type rear suspension of the KTM enduro bikes. The FE250 (Four-stroke Enduro) is an amazingly capable machine, in fact at the hands of Jake Whitaker it took out this year’s class national championship. If that doesn’t say anything about how capable it is then not much will. We’ve got a one as a long term tester for the next few months to race and ride. See page 68 for more. Enjoy the mag. BEN WILKINS.

CRF1000L COMING SOON

L

ast issue we reported on an all-new Honda adventure bike, designated CRF1000L. Well, now we have more details. Kiwis can expect to see it in Honda dealerships early in 2016 branded as ‘Africa Twin’. With the way the local currency is going it is hard to guess at a price but it’s a good bet it will be around $20,000. While pricing is to be confirmed, we can tell you a bit more about the bike. It is closely based on the True Adventure prototype Honda showed at last November’s EICMA in Milan and is intended as a long distance explorer that can handle unpaved roads and trails. The engine is a 998cc SOHC parallel twin with twin spark plug ignition and the transmission is a six-speed unit. The bike will be available with either a slipper clutch or an optional dual-clutch transmission that will allow automatic gear changing. Word is Honda off-road riders who have tried this are very impressed. Honda says the engine is tuned for “strong and linear” power and torque, as well as instant response anywhere in the rev range. Twin balance shafts help cancel vibration and crankpins are phased 90 degrees apart. Off-roaders will be glad to learn that the bike has Honda Selectable Torque Control, which offers the rider three levels of control and, most important, ability to shut off ABS to the rear wheel. By using a 92mm cylinder bore and a 75mm piston stroke, Honda has been able to keep engine height down and it says this contributes to providing decent 250mm ground clearance. In keeping with its off-road ability the new Africa Twin features a 21-inch front wheel using a 2.15-inch wide alloy rim while the wirespoked rear rim is a decent 4.0-inches wide and mounts an 18-inch semi knobby tyre. There was speculation the bike was designed to weigh in at less than 200 kg. Well, Honda has not been able to meet that objective with the bike scaling 228 kg ready to go. Suspension is by Showa and braking is from Nissin with a pair of 310mm wave discs gripped by radial-mount four piston callipers up front and a 256mm wave rotor and twin piston calliper at the rear. Rather than an aluminium frame the new

Words: Michael Esdaile

Honda’s new adventure bike will be more off-road capable than most.

Fitted with a 21-inch front wheel and provided with decent ground clearance, the new Africa Twin is looking very adventurous.

The CRF1000L has been designed to be thin in the waist to allow riders to have ease of movement fore and aft on the seat.

Africa Twin uses a rugged steel tube chassis of semi double-cradle design and seat height is a lofty 870mm with an optional lower 850mm

high perch. The fuel tank carries just under 19 litres but Honda says this will provide up to 400km of range.

PERO OUT, SHORAI IN…

A

fter just one year of sponsorship of the classic racing event at Hampton Downs known as the Barry Sheene Motorcycle Classic, Mike Pero Real Estate has given way to new naming rights sponsor Chinese maker Shorai Batteries. The event will still be staged at Labour Weekend but the Barry Sheene name has also disappeared. The event will now be known as the Shorai Batteries International Motorcycle Classic. Curiously, Sheene’s image still appears on the event’s website though…

The feature race each day will be between the ten fastest riders entered from New Zealand, Australia, England and the Rest of the World. Riders will wear vests designating their country. The organising club, the Post Classic Motorcycle Racing Association, says it is expecting entries from Australians Cam Donald, Robbie Phillis, Nigel Taylor, Dean Oughtred and Glenn Hindle. E

ver since Honda won the first MotoGP championship in 2002 with the RC211V, sections of the motorcycle press have titillated readers with speculation of a road going Honda MotoGP bike. Now, 13 years after the V5 RC211V won and more than three incarnations of Honda MotoGP racer later, the world’s biggest motorcycle maker has done it. On June 14 it wheeled out a road-going version of its current factory racer and had Casey Stoner demonstrate it in front of a packed crowd at the Circuit de BarcelonaCatalunya. This really is a grand prix racer with lights, starter motor and side stand, with the engine de-tuned to meet emission laws, fitted with steel valve springs rather than pneumatic closing and the racer’s seamless transmission replaced by a conventional constant-mesh gearbox with sliding engaging dogs. Like the race bike though, it is a cassette-type unit. Similarly, the carbon brakes of the GP machine have been replaced by stainless steel rotors. The new RC213V-S will be hand-built by Honda at an exclusive workshop at its Kumamoto factory. The bike has been developed from the current 1000cc V4 RC213V GP racer by Honda R&D using engineers with past experience of the RC211V (900cc V5) and RC212V (800cc V4). Honda has poured substantial resources into this machine that basic specification numbers

14

KIWI RIDER

do not begin to explain. It is not a production bike: Honda expects to build just one a day.

DIFFICULT TASK Taking a MotoGP racer and making it road-legal is no easy task, which is possibly why it took Ducati so long to do it with the Desmoseideci (see sidebar). Foremost challenge for the engineers is to get a racing engine to meet today’s stringent noise and exhaust gas emission requirements and meet realistic maintenance intervals. No one wants to pay top dollar for a road machine and have to re-build the engine every 3000 miles or so. To help in this endeavour, the RC213V-S turns lower rpm than the racer, with peak power developed at 11,000rpm, and three ring pistons are used to help prevent ‘blow-by’ and thus exhaust gas pollution, not to mention oil contamination from combustion gasses. But the RC213V-S “requires maintenance processes different from those of Honda’s ordinary mass-produced models”, so they will be carried out at designated dealerships with the necessary tools. After that getting the engine emissions compliant there was the easier problem of where to fit a starter motor, add lights, rear view mirrors, speedometer and licence plate holder. Honda’s press literature for the RC213V-S – which runs to 42 pages – makes numerous and regular mention of “ease of manoeuvring” as a central tenet in the design of the new bike. As it is based on the RC213V, mass centralisation

was pretty much taken care of. The fuel tank, reduced from 20 to 16.3 litres, is in the same place – between the rider’s knees and extending down under the seat. The reduction in volume was to accommodate a larger battery.

CHASSIS Like the frame of the race bike, the RC213V-S chassis has necessary rigidity only in the parts requiring it, and thin plates used for areas with less contribution to torsional rigidity. The frame and swing-arm are TIG welded by full-time experts adopting “the materials and manufacturing methods used for the RC213V as much as possible.” Machined titanium bolts are used to fasten parts, manually torqued to values different from those of steel bolts. The steering head uses press-fit eccentric collars to support the steering axis but unlike the race bike, Honda will not be offering different collars to enable changes in steering geometry, which has been set at 24.6 degrees of rake and 105mm trail. Öhlins pressurised TTX25 forks (with dust seals added) support the front-end with rear suspension provided by Öhlins Racing AB in the form of a TTX36 spring-damper assembly, with a spring pre-load adjuster on the backside. Rather than a telescopic steering damper, the RC213V-S uses a rotary damper mounted ahead of the steering head, the same position as on the racer. The damper body uses the same part as that on the RCV1000R Open class racer.

Words: Michael Esdaile / Photos: Honda

Where the factory racer uses carbon brakes, the RC213V-S uses stainless steel discs of the same design as the floating wet-weather rotors used on the GP machine, supplied by Yutaka Giken Co. Ltd. These are mounted to machined aluminium carriers. The calipers are the same Brembo units as on the race bike, as are the front and rear brake master cylinders and the master cylinder for the hydraulic clutch. The clutch and brake levers are straight from the GP bike. Unlike the racer, which rides on 16.5-inch wheels, the RC213V-S uses 17-inch forged magnesium alloy Marchesini items to which are mounted Bridgestone RS10 tyres: 120/70ZR17 front and 190/55ZR17 rear. The rider’s footrests use the same adjustable layout of the RC213V, with three lateral and two vertical positions, each 11mm apart, which means there is a total range of 22mm of vertical and 33mm of horizontal adjustment available. The gear shift lever pivot uses bearings incorporated into the shaft bushings, just like the racer. And just like the racer, there is no seat supporting metal sub-frame.

BODYWORK The S-model’s fairing is almost identical to that of the racer. In a concession to the greater steering lock required for street use, the shape around the handlebar area has been altered. All bodywork – fairing, the shroud over the fuel tank, belly pan and seat cowl – are made from pre-pregnated Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) with thickness varied to

achieve optimum strength in each area by changing the stack count of the carbon fibres. The seat cowl is a monococque CFRP structure identical to the GP machine. To mount the rear view mirrors, the handlebar lever guards do double duty.

ENGINE When Honda built the RC213V for the 2012 season, it worked hard to keep engine dimensions as close to those of the 800cc RC212V as possible. To achieve this it set the cylinders low into the crankcase and adopted oval shaped counterweights on the crankshaft so that the bottom dead centre (BDC) position of the pistons is much closer to the centre of the crankshaft. Tungsten alloy weights with a high specific gravity press fit into the crank webs to provide the required balance factor and provide the inertial mass required for crankshaft counter-weights. When Honda built the Superbike World Championship homologation special RC30, it adopted a 48.6mm piston stroke. The RC213V uses the same stroke, which, combined with the 81mm bore limit set by MotoGP regulations, results in a displacement of 999cc. At the 11,000rpm where the RC213V-S develops its peak power, mean piston speed is a relatively modest 17.82 metres per second. Also, like all the road-going V4 Hondas, the cylinder vee angle is 90-degrees. Like the original Honda V4, the 1982 VF750S, and the later VF750F, as well as the RC30

and RC45, the RC213V’s crankshaft features crankpins set at 360 degrees so that the firing intervals are 90-270-90-270. The aluminium crankcases of the RC213V-S are sand-cast while the connecting rods and valves are titanium. The cylinders are of the ‘closed deck’ design to enhance rigidity and reduce deformation of the cylinders from the energy of combustion at high rpm and are plated with a composite nickel-silicon-carbide process. The dual overhead camshafts are driven by a train of gears and operate the titanium valves through pivoting finger followers. The valves are set at a very narrow included angle, giving the intake charge a very straight path into the combustion chambers. In developing the RC213V, Honda adopted short inlet ports to limit intake port volume to improve throttle response. The RC213V-S uses the same cam drive gear drive layout of the GP bike but uses an eccentric adjustment mechanism with co-axial cam gears to enable backlash adjustment without the need to mix and match gears. On the racer, cam gear backlash is adjusted by technicians selecting from multiple gears and hand fitting them to get the best result, something a race department can do but would add a big labour component at a dealership. Feeding fuel to the engine are two injectors per cylinder, one down-stream of the throttle butterfly, the other mounted on the upper part of the throttle body and thus sitting inside the CFRP air cleaner case. This is identical to the race bike.

orget Old Norse mythology of a Valkyrie. Who needs to know about the choosers of the slain? The mythical female warriors who deliver the fallen to Valhalla? All a bit morbid if you ask me. What you need to know is that the Honda Valkyrie is absolutely mega! It’s big, bold and fast. And clearly beautiful, if public reaction is anything to go by. I lost count of the number of people who came up and said what a great looking/sexy machine the Honda is. No other bike I have tested has ever created that kind of reaction from the

general public. Even I think it looks cool… and I normally dislike the look of cruisers. That said, I must admit that most of the attraction for me comes from the true awesomeness of the engine. With an 1832cc, flat-six liquidcooled engine that has twin overhead radiators, and fans... you just know it’s going to be something special. Okay, so the motor has been around a while in the Goldwing and the Bagger and we know it’s super smooth. No, actually we know more than that, it’s creamy smooth with an almost unparalleled flexibility. But in the lighter weight Valkyrie chassis it

becomes a bit of a weapon too. Because as a naked bike, unburdened by the weight of panniers and bodywork etc. this Honda really comes alive. While it is certainly not the fastest big bike around, I believe it has the best real-world, big road bike engine on the market today. This engine absolutely point blank refuses to be intimidated by, or dictated to, by the gearbox... just think about that for moment... Want to take off in top gear from stationary with barely a whiff of throttle and clutch slip? You can. Or, pass a truck (from 40kph) while two up and laden without changing down from top? Hell, that’s no problem. Just

roll open the throttle and the big six will effortlessly shrug off the low revs, vanquish the truck and swiftly surge onwards, making your current location a distant image in your mirrors. At 1500rpm in fifth (top gear) the Valkyrie is almost silently doing 50kph. At 2800rpm the Honda is wafting along at 100kph. The rev limiter cuts in at 6800rpm. You do the maths... Seriously, there is no smoother, more flexible and easier to use large capacity engine around. Full stop, end of story. But get this, even though it’s super smooth, the Honda somehow still manages to have character and charisma in abundance. It’s just

VERSYS 1000

If you’re looking for a one bike garage, Kawasaki’s Versys 1000 could very well be the perfect bike for New Zealand’s roads.

I

couldn’t have picked a worse day for a motorcycle ride. In the midst of some of the heaviest rain the country has ever seen, I set off from work after lunch on a Friday. With over six hours of riding ahead of me, it would be dark long before I arrived at my destination and with no time for rest, the worst roads would be right at the end of the journey. Thank goodness for traction control and ABS… I was heading off to meet up with the rest of the KR crew, for a weekend long jaunt around the East Cape (see KR July 2015). We had managed to wrangle a bunch of various KTM Adventure models and one Kawasaki to test, so the plan was to head to Gisborne via the gravel roads through Waikaremoana to give the big dual-sport models a run for their money. Being the one with the day job, I couldn’t afford a whole day off work, so ended up being the lonely sole on the Kawasaki with the 17-

inch wheels. I skipped the gravel section and headed straight down the main drag to rendezvous at the campsite on Friday night. Unfortunately I was caught in the worst of the rain storm. It was pouring down when I left Auckland and eased up only a little as I rode through Matamata, but the rain came back with a vengeance as I rode into Rotorua. I stopped for ten minutes to refuel and carried on, non-stop, all the way to Gisborne. I arrived in one piece, a bit damp, feeling surprisingly happy to be alive. Not in the “I was lucky to get out of that one” sense, but in the “these are the days when life is worth living” sense. Fortunately the rest of the weekend was graced by glorious late autumn weather – perfect blue skies with a crisp but not too cool air temperature. As far as motorcycling goes, it doesn’t get much better. And to be honest, I really couldn’t imagine a bike better suited to the roads we were on. Am I saying the Kawasaki Versys 1000 is the best touring bike for NZ

Triumph’s Speed Triple started the whole factory ‘street fighter’ thing over 20 years ago. In 2015 the big triple is sharper than it ever was.

T

his is where it started. Triumph instigated the factory street fighter craze way back in 1992. The young lads at the Hinckley factory started tinkering with their tridenttriple to make it more ‘hoonable’. Two years later, in 1994 to be exact, the Speed Triple was born. Since then the founding principles of the speed Triple have been strictly adhered to and maintained. Those young engineers created an exciting ride that was grunty, with crisp, sharp handling and in-your-face styling. It has always exuded an attitude of “don’t mess with me”. Some might say it shows the ‘PC’ world the middle finger? Whatever, it definitely has swagger. This brings me to the latest 1050R ABS version. What do you do if you’re Triumph and you already have a kick-

36

arse naked bike that performs super well, and with over twenty years of heritage? Well, you obviously wouldn’t be fretting about the engine. The 1050cc, 12-valve, DOHC, liquid-cooled triple has a feisty, bull-ish charm all of its own. What you do is this; you toss on the best aftermarket products money can buy. Ohlins suspension front and rear, the best of the best, Brembo M50 monobloc front brake calipers (with ABS) and super sticky Pirelli tyres. The chassis hardware sorted, you’d then add a belly pan, a small fly screen, a great sounding 3-1-2 stainless underseat exhaust system and finally, Diablo Red radiator shrouds. Sorted. Looking at the Speed Triple’s specs it’s obvious the bike can be nothing other than an exciting blast to ride. It has a short 1435mm wheelbase, a steep 22.8-degree steering rake and a modest dry weight of 186kg. Combine this with

eturning from last month’s mineshaft explorations Mike and I stopped at The Victoria Hotel, Cromwell, for refreshment and ran into some friends of KR; Richard Ebbrett and his girlfriend (with her Suzuki DR400) who are both keen on the trails. Apparently Richard’s bike had blown a clutch pack coming into Cromwell but these guys were riding between 500km and 600km per day on the tracks, which sounded like hard work to Beryl and me! The biggest day of riding was completing the highest public right of way in New Zealand - the mighty Nevis Crossing. We started by taking the road to Clyde, and heading up the Look-Out Hill then took the Pylon Road - a dirt track, which leads up to the Hawkden Station. This joins at the Bannockburn Road end of the Nevis, where we headed west. With well over twenty stream crossings (some of them deep) and multiple gate openings it was a challenging ride and having company gave me the confidence to challenge the DR in some much deeper water. Mike wisely took his 1500 on the bridge over the deepest crossing, but I was in the mood to push our limits. Much beard stroking (Mike’s, not mine) and deliberation ensued whilst we scouted the swirling water, searching for the path of least resistance. Then summoning up all my courage and

46

KIWI RIDER

keeping the revs up, we traversed the water diagonally. There was a heart-stoppingly quiet moment when Beryl’s exhaust was temporarily submerged but with a surge she climbed steadily up the bank on the opposite side. Impressed and relieved, I’m afraid that despite being implored to cross again for a photo opportunity, I quit while ahead, and still dry. Sharing a drink at the historic Dansey’s Pass Hotel was where I said farewell to Mike and Peanut and climbed over the Kakanui Mountains. The weather reflected my mood as the thunder rolled around and I was lashed by rain. Upon arriving in Duntroon, on the banks

of the Waitaki River, the sun put in an appearance and my mood lifted. I had an easy and pleasant ride to Omarama. Arriving at the free DOC campsite beside the river, I was delighted to run into my pal Bill Cooper, whom I’d met before in Wanaka (see pic below). Sharing a catch-up and some supper while Bill admired my smart new luggage system, he told me how, upon recounting my adventure to other travellers, he’d been met with a mixture of envy, amazement and disbelief that any female could possibly be riding thousands of kilometres alone. But with a bike as reliable and light as the DR200S I really believe anyone can do it and what’s more… they should.

TOWNLEY GEARING UP FOR NATIONS MX

T

auranga’s Ben Townley has set himself a busy schedule as he gears up for September’s Motocross of Nations in France. He is off to race the final rounds of the Australian Motocross Championships in the first two weekends of August and then plans to fly to the USA to race the Glen Helen round of the World Motocross Championship. After that he’s off to France to race for the New Zealand team at the Motocross of Nations, which will be held at Ernée. Last time Townley raced the MX of Nations in France he scored 1-2 finishes in the MX3 class. But that was way back in 2005 when he was coming off his fourth season of world championship racing. This

The first models were powered by Sachs 50cc and 125cc two-stroke engines at a time when the 50cc class in the International Six Days Trial was a big deal. Later SMWs used the Austrian Rotax powerhouse for motive force and the boutique brand did well in ISDT competition and won a World Trials Championship. The downturn in the European off-road market saw SWM go into liquidation in 1984. Thirty years later the brand has been resurrected by former Cagiva, Husqvarna and Aprilia engineer Ampelio Macchi, with backing from ATV and motorcycle maker China Chongqing Shineray Motorcycle Co. It is of considerable satisfaction to him that the team’s number two MX1 rider Makoto Ogata is leading the Japanese Championship. The plant is equipped with state of the art tooling and dyno rooms and formerly produced Husqvarna motorcycles under BMW ownership until 2013, when the brand was sold to Stefan Pierer. Along with the factory, SWM acquired ten Husqvarna models and now the revitalised company is set to launch three enduro models – RS300R, RS500R and RS650R – along with two supermoto machines (SM500R and SM650R) and the Silver Vase 440 scrambler and 440 Grand Milano roadster. First model in production is the RS650R powered by a DOHC four-stroke single Macchi originally designed for the then Cagiva-owned Husqvarna. With a 100mm and 76.4mm stroke, the liquid-cooled DOHC four valver displaces 600cc. It has a six-

Compression ratio is 12.4:1 and the motor is claimed to produce more than 50 horsepower with plenty of torque. It rides on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wire spoked wheels with aluminium rims and has Brembo disc brakes. Front suspension is inverted Marzocchi with 45mm tubes while the Sachs rear suspension unit controls an aluminium alloy swing-arm. Front travel is 212 mm while the rear has 270mm travel, resulting in a 900mm seat height. This bike is fully road legal and scales in at 145 kg. It is now three wins from three starts for motocross hero Ben Townley at the popular annual Honda Tarawera 100 cross-country marathon.

he 30-year-old former world and national motocross champion took his Honda CRF450 into the lead soon after the start of the 160-kilometre (100-mile) cross-country race, the distance that gives the annual July event near Kawerau its name. But it wasn’t a case of Townley disappearing into the horizon, but rather it was a virtual repeat of the race of 12 months earlier when Taupo’s Brad Groombridge (Suzuki RM-Z450) hunted him down and applied pressure right up until the end. Pahiatua’s national cross-country champion Paul Whibley (Yamaha YZ450F) grabbed the holeshot but Townley leapt past him at the first steep downhill, just a few hundred metres into the race. At the end of the first lap it was still Townley in front, but now he had Groombridge for company, just a few dozen bike lengths behind, and Whibley was back to third (Whibley later dropped to eighth after crashing heavily on lap two, although he did manage to fight back through the field). It got tighter at the front as the race wore on, with almost nothing to separate Townley and Groombridge at the start of the fourth and final lap of the afternoon and it was actually Groombridge in front at that stage, thanks to a slick final re-fuel in the pits giving him an advantage of several bike lengths as they exited. But, despite the race typically pushing competitors to eye-watering speeds, even over

R has the awesome little Husqvarna FE250 four-stroke as a long time test machine. Over the next few months we will keep you updated on how this quarter litre beast performs in all the different terrain we can throw it at. Plus we’ll give you opinions from all our testers. Sam Greenslade (our resident hard man/ hard rider), Liam Draper (our young fast dude), Jake Whitaker (trials and enduro supremo), and me – the old and well, err, old bloke (Jock’s not one to blow his trumpet but he’s an ISDE veteran and ex-national champ - Ed). In the meantime, this is an initial ‘heads up’ on it and how she goes.

The first thing that occurred to me was, why would I buy the Husky as opposed to the KTM? They both have a similar chrome molybdenum central tube steel frame. The 249.91cc DOHC, liquid cooled six-speed engines are more-or-less identical. Both have a 970mm seat height. The 260mm front and 220mm rear Brembo brakes are the same. Both have the same steering head angle of 26.5 degrees, the list goes on. So, what is different apart from the colour schemes? The differences come largely with the suspension. The Husky gets top of the line USD WP 4CS forks with the same 300mm of wheel travel as the KTM. Then out back the Husky has a WP shock with 330mm wheel travel mounted on a rising rate

linkage while the KTM has a PDS rear end with 5mm more travel. Also the sub-frames are different with the Husky a composite plastic unit while the KTM has an alloy one. Most interesting to me is the KTM is almost two kg lighter than the Husky’s 107.3kg, both bikes measured without fuel... yes, that linkage must come at a slight weight cost. To ride, the FE250 is delightful. In fact, it is hard to imagine an off-road bike that is more pleasant to ride. For general play riding and trail hooning it is an absolute blast and all riders from modest ability up, will most likely find it a very forgiving accomplice. It just does everything so effortlessly. The power delivery is very smooth, very tractable and surprisingly quick.

This is with the engine map switch set to its most aggressive position. I’m not sure when you’d need to use the mellower setting? Perhaps ice riding...? To go quick the motor is at its best in high traction, tight terrain. Its downside, is heavy wet or sandy soils in open going, but the disadvantage is definitely not what it feels. It may not roost like a 450 but it is not wasting drive either. Handling-wise, and this shouldn’t be surprising really, the FE250 feels like the PDS KTM with very agile steering and okay balance. The FE was brand new when I rode it so the the suspension has more than likely settled in since then, but on the day the rear suspension sat high, with

Taking the bike on an overseas tour, or buying or selling overseas? Want someone who knows bikes and knows how they should be handled?

Then call us-we have years of experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US.... BEST OF BRITISH Original 1939 Tiger 100

M

uch has been said and written about Edward Turner’s Triumph Speed Twin. It was without doubt the model that set the stage for the British motorcycle industry’s thirty or forty year passion for parallel twins, but many believe the model that followed it, the Tiger 100, was the bike that gave the twin configuration its real impetus in the market place. The 500cc Speed Twin first appeared in 1938, and with war clouds forming over Europe the Tiger was launched in 1939. The Tiger was actually a sporting version of the Speed Twin. It had a higher compression ratio, forged pistons, polished inlet ports, and bigger carburettor. Special mufflers had end caps that could be removed easily with a screw driver, transforming the pipes into open megaphones, for the race track only of course. The extra horsepower achieved would lift the Tiger’s output to around 10bhp higher than the Speed Twin, and give it a top speed of 160kph. Apart from that the machines were very similar. They even weighed the same, 165.45kg. The extra speed and horsepower, however, made the Tiger very attractive for race track use. In 1946, with the war, over Triumph began building motorcycles again, and that year Ernie Lyons won the Manx Grand Prix in the Isle of Man. He rode a race-kitted version of the Tiger 100, known as the Grand Prix Triumph. Apart from engine

modifications the race bike, at 140kg, was 25kg lighter than the road going version. It also reached speeds in excess of the old 120mph, or 192kph. Syd Jensen from Palmerston North went to the Isle of Man in 1949 with Jim Swarbrick and John Dale as part of the New Zealand team. He rode a Grand Prix Triumph into fifth place in the Senior TT, and that was more prestigious than the success in the amateur Manx Grand Prix. The factory was so impressed that Edward Turner himself presented Jensen with the winning machine. Triumph then produced 200 of the production racers between 1947 and 1950. The immediate post-war Triumph had telescopic forks at the front. Their 1947 catalogue said “The introduction of the Triumph telescopic fork marked a big step forward. Now we are proud to introduce the Triumph spring wheel, which provides the answer to problems of rear wheel springing with a degree of simplicity, and efficiency never before approached in this all-important phase of motor cycle design. The rear wheel springing system is encased in a large aluminium alloy hub shell, to which is attached the rear brake. The spring wheel is mounted in the frame in the same way as a normal wheel”. A rather important point was also made in the catalogue, “The pillion passenger enjoys the same degree of comfort as the rider.” By 1949 AJS, Matchless, Royal Enfield, and Vincent all had swinging-arm
