ELLO... and welcome to the September issue of Kiwi Rider. There aren’t many bikes that come along that knock our socks off. Yamaha’s recently launched MT-10 is one such motorcycle. Dunlop to headline 2016 Suzuki series

by Andy McGechan

T

he world-renowned Cemetery Circuit races, around the closed-off public streets of Whanganui each Boxing Day, will this year feature the rider who has for a number of years been setting alight the equally-famous Isle of Man race circuit, Northern Irishman Michael Dunlop. The 27-year-old Dunlop is the latest in a long line of exciting, headline-grabbing athletes who have been drawn to the tricky Cemetery Circuit in recent years, with Britain’s Guy Martin, Liechtenstein rider Horst Saiger and British women’s champion Maria Costello just a few of the other star attractions that Cemetery Circuit organiser Allan ‘Flea’ Willacy has managed to entice to New Zealand in recent years. The Cemetery Circuit event on December 26 will again be the third and final round of the popular annual Suzuki Series, which kicks off at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park near Taupo on December 4, then takes riders to Manfeild for round two on December 11, before its traditional Boxing Day finale on the public streets of Whanganui. The highly-respected Dunlop will also race at Manfeild’s round two of the Suzuki Series, although it is the Robert Holden Memorial Trophy, given each years to the Cemetery Circuit feature race winner, that he craves most. Willacy said Australian motards riders and more solos and sidecar racers from the United Kingdom, including World Champion/IOMTT winners, are still yet to be announced. The Suzuki Series formula one class champion in 2014, Saiger, from the German-speaking principality of Liechtenstein, nestled between Switzerland and Austria, has also indicated that he will return to race again this year. However, much of the spectator focus this year will likely go on Dunlop, who will choose between racing a Suzuki GSX-R1000 superbike or the “more upright street-style” Suzuki GSX-S1000, supplied by Suzuki New Zealand. From Ballymoney, in Northern Ireland, Dunlop is a part of a legendary motorcycle racing dynasty. He is the brother of fellow

world class rider William Dunlop, son of the late and great Robert Dunlop and nephew of the late former world champion Joey Dunlop. A 13-time winner around the Isle of man, Michael Dunlop is the current solo-machine lap record holder for the mountain course around the Isle of Man, set during the 2016 Senior TT in June, circulating in a hot time of 16 minutes 53.929 seconds at an average speed of 133.962mph (215.591km/h). Dunlop was the first rider in the history of the Isle of Man TT to achieve a lap of the course in under 17 minutes. Widely regarded as one of the most tenacious competitors in motorcycle racing, Dunlop’s aggressive style has endeared himself to fans over the years and his appearance in New Zealand this summer will surely add numbers to his massive fan base. “The impending arrival of Michael Dunlop for the Suzuki Series is fantastic news,” said Willacy. “He is a true superstar of the sport and has been described as the best street road-racer in the world, with a total 22 TT podiums to his credit. “We are thrilled to be able to report that a rider of this calibre is coming here to race.”

Crosby returns to the Classic TT

I

sle of Man TT legend Graeme Crosby will return to the island later this year as one of the special guests at the 2016 Classic TT. Crosby will be riding his original factory XR69 1000cc Suzuki, now owned by Team Classic Suzuki, which took him to so much success in the early 1980s both on the roads and the short circuits. Croz, as he’s affectionately known, will also be meeting the fans and taking an active part in the Festival of Jurby, which takes place on Sunday August 28th, between the two race days, as well as taking to the Mountain Course again for Monday’s Classic Racer Magazine Lap of Honour. Crosby made his debut at the Isle of Man TT Races in 1979 where he made an immediate impact, taking a brilliant fourth on the Moriwaki Kawasaki in the

Formula One race. A strong season in the UK saw him snapped up by the works Heron Suzuki for the following two seasons where he enjoyed some of his greatest success. Riding the iconic XR69 Suzuki, Crosby won both the 1980 and 1981 World Formula One Championships and took the bike to victory in the 1981 Formula One and Classic TT races, the latter seeing him lap just eight tenths of a second outside the outright lap record. He also rode an RG500 Suzuki to victory in the 1980 Senior TT giving him a career total of three TT wins. Crosby’s short TT career only lasted three years - from 1979 to 1981 - but in that time he took three wins, a second and a fourth from his seven races. Indeed, had he competed more on the Mountain Course, it’s fair to say he would have won numerous more races

as he battled with the likes of Joey Dunlop, Ron Haslam, Mick Grant and Charlie Williams. Speaking about the Classic TT, Graeme commented “I’ve only missed one Classic TT since it was introduced and it is one of my favourite events of the year. I really enjoy the Classic racing scene and am actively involved in supporting riders by building classic race bikes. I’m looking forward to catching up with all the fans on the Isle of Man once more as well as getting a run out on the XR69 with Team Classic Suzuki.” KIWI RIDER

An inspired wet-weather performance from Marquez extends his championship lead. Words: Michael Esdaile Photos: Honda Racing, Yamaha Motor Europe N.V

M

arc Marquez’s latest win, in wet then dry conditions at the GoPro Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland at the Sachsenring on July 17, proved beyond any doubt he is a man right on top of his game and, although we are only mid-way through the season, Marquez is now odds-on favourite to add a third MotoGP title to his considerable list of accomplishments. Despite the problems with the Honda’s handling, which has seen all the other Honda riders struggling on a dry track, Marquez has worked out a way to not only ride around that handicap, but has figured out how to use the Michelin tyres to best advantage at the same time. Consequently he seems to be revelling in riding on the brink of disaster – in stark contrast to the two most recent showings of defending champion Jorge Lorenzo, at Assen and the Sachsenring. Where Marquez has been able to deal with the treacherous conditions that rain bought to both races, Lorenzo seems to have suddenly lost his confidence, qualifying poorly and riding around at the back of the field. Consequently he finished 12th at Assen and 15th at the Sachsenring, picking up just seven championship points compared with the 45 points Marquez grabbed. 14

KIWI RIDER

The switch to slicks let Marquez show his brilliance Leading to the mid-season break, Marquez has a 48 point lead over Lorenzo, with Rossi 59 points behind the number one Repsol Honda man. Dani Pedrosa, on the second Repsol Honda, is 74 points behind the championship leader. Rossi went to the Sachsenring third in the title chase, trailing Marquez by 42 points. Given his usual good wet-weather form, he was in a position to make significant inroads on second placed Lorenzo, but it wasn’t to be for the Italian. The race started on a wet track with pole man Marquez taking the lead from Rossi, Hector Barbera, Danelo Petrucci and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati GP16) but it was not long before Rossi and Dovizioso slipped past and pulled away, leaving Marquez heading Petrucci and Assen winner Jack Miller, who had made a huge amount of ground in the opening lap, shooting up from 16th on the grid to sixth on his first lap. Petrucci looked confident, picking off Marquez, Rossi and Dovizioso to take the lead four laps into the 30-lapper. He kept his OCTO Pramac Yakhnich Ducati GP15 out front for six laps before crashing,

handing the lead back to Dovizioso who had Rossi, Barbera and Miller close behind. At this point Marquez had run off onto the gravel at speed while in sixth place, dropping to ninth. Marquez then recovered to eighth place before pitting on lap 18. His Repsol Honda crew had fitted his spare bike with slick tyres front and rear even though the track was still mostly wet. However, a dry line was emerging around the track and that was all Marquez needed. He went back out and started charging, reeling off lap times five to six seconds faster than the riders still out on wets. Marquez was up to sixth when race leader Dovizioso pitted, followed by Rossi, Barbera and a fast-closing Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda), who had worked his way to third from 13th on the opening lap. That left Miller in the lead for two laps before Marquez swept past and stretched away on fully warmed up slicks to win by almost 10 seconds. Rossi ignored the Yamaha team’s pit board that was signalling him to pit for at least three laps before he did so and when he did, his spare bike was fitted

YAMAHA’S MT-10

BREAKS COVER

With a re-tuned YZF-R1 motor at its heart, Yamaha’s brawny MT-10 offers huge performance and great comfort... all wrapped up in attitude.

Y

amaha’s MT range has been bringing us lively, out of the ordinary bikes since the company’s MT-01 was introduced in 2005. Naked and funky, the MT range offers something a little different for the bike-buying public. However, unlike other MT models, Yamaha’s newest MT, the MT-10, gets its motor from a sports bike. Not just any sports bike though, it’s from the Yamaha’s top-of-the-range sports bike – the YZF-R1. I suppose you’d like to know if it’s quick? Yes, stunninglyquick. But there’s so much more to Yamaha’s latest superbike. I’ll first tell you that the MT-10 is not a naked R1. It’s not a revvy top-end machine that’s honed for the track with manners to suit and a limited riding scope. No, the MT-10 is a big, bold, bruiser of a bike that is just at home on city streets as it is on twisty roads and open sweepers. Before I get into the bike’s manners, I want to tell you about the engine. The original MT-01 took its engine from the V1700 Warrior cruiser, and while it was

a grunty bike, it didn’t offer anything like litre-class sports bike performance. Yep, it was pretty quick but not R1-quick. Not even close. Other models in the MT range have engines which were designed just for the MT range. Take the MT-09 triple and MT-07 twin as examples. They’ve got great engines but they’re designed for a purpose and, again, aren’t in the superbike league. That’s changed with the MT-10. The top model in the MT range gets itself a ‘re-tuned’ version of Yamaha’s YZF-R1 cross-plane crank motor. To get a big spread of power from the revvy R1 engine, Yamaha engineers have given the MT-10 different ignition and fuel mapping, mid-range boosting camshafts, smaller valves, a slightly lower compression ratio and a heavier crank. I can just imagine some of you being miffed that the engine has been re-tuned. Don’t be. Yes, it’s been re-tuned for low- and mid-range power but, unlike some retuned/de-tuned bikes, the MT has a wave of torque at low revs and huge power right through the rev-range. This is one seriously quick naked bike. 160hp quick. Wheelies will happen on this bike in the

Just when we thought Suzuki’s SV650 was due its long service award, a complete revamp brings it bang up to date.

G

one is Gladius. And so we welcome the return of Suzuki’s SV650. This is a model that was first introduced in 1999 and, personally, I’m glad to see it back in the range. In Europe, the SV gained a cult-like following among experienced riders and beginners alike. In fact, in France the SV is probably one of the most popular bikes for modifying to ever hit the market. Updated and significantly revamped to meet the next round of stringent EuroIV emissions regulations, the new SV650 is back with a bang. Available in both standard and LAMS versions, it’s the LAMS model on test here. According to Suzuki, the full-power model will be available sometime in September. All up, the new bike has some 60-odd new components in the engine to bring it up to date to meet EuroIV emissions.

The cylinder heads are dual spark to improve economy and keep emissions low. The pistons have a resin coating to reduce friction and the inlet trumpet are staggered lengths to improve mid-range power without losing anything from peak. The airbox is also new and has been tuned for a ‘more exiting sound’. In these days of extremely stringent emissions laws, every bit of sound for the rider helps make the ride. Sitting on the new bike, it’s apparent Suzuki has narrowed the seat and tank. This new-found lean-ness along with a seat height of 785mm, makes the SV an enticing prospect for shorter riders. Suzuki says the new bike is suitable for riders of 5’ 3” or so. At 183cm (6-feet) tall and a 33” inside leg, I found there was just enough seat to peg distance. Any less and it’d be cramped. So those shorter than me should find there’s plenty of room. The seat is comfortable but I found the heavily sculpted shape only allows a limited

Coming in at less that $19,000, BMW’s ‘baby’ GS could just be the bargain of the range.

T

here’s confusion right from the get-go. The BMW F700GS actually has the same capacity engine as its big brother, the F800GS. Yes I know... decals can be deceiving. However the engine is a little detuned to make it more suitable for riders stepping up from true entry level machines. Hence the 700 tag... and the ongoing confusion. To ride the 700 though, it feels just as sprightly as the 800 machine, only lacking a whisker of top end by comparison and is still plenty quick enough for most riding.

ADVENTURE STYLED

While the 700 is a GS adventure machine, by name at least, it is really a road bike with adventure style ergonomics and riding position. It has cast alloy wheels with Michelin Anakee 3, 140/8017 and 110/80-19 tyres. Of course, that does not preclude it from gravel roads or very light off-road work, and it can be fitted with knobbly tyres of course. But, in reality, it is predominately a road bike with comfy ergos. It has a short, relatively ugly, squarecut non-adjustable screen above the

signature GS asymmetrical headlights. I must say, the screen actually works okay as long as you’re not looking for total weather protection. The wind-blast hit me high-ish on the chest and kept much of the winter chill at bay. It was also quiet with zero buffeting for me – it is a decent screen. The seat turns out to be comfortable, but not height adjustable. The standard height is 820mm; however there are four optional seats available that offer a potential seat height range from 765mm to 860mm – that should ensure a comfy height for most, if not all. Heated grips come standard with two options. Nice and warm, to fully toasty – excellent. Maybe I’ve gone soft... but I’m beginning to truly embrace heated grips. The dash’ has an analogue speedometer mounted above an analogue tachometer that is clear and easy to read. An LCD is mounted to the side with all the usual info such as fuel level, trip, time and warning lights etc. Happily, for easy maintenance in the garage at home a centre stand comes standard on the 700 as well as the normal kick stand. In general all controls are easy to operate, the ergos are comfortable and relaxed with a sensible, logical and commanding riding position.

A

‘milestone’ birthday was the catalyst for me to finally visit the Isle of Man for the TT races. This is a trip that’s been hovering midway up my ‘bucket list’, somewhere between winning Lotto and nude fire-walking, for a long time. This year I made the, admittedly last minute, decision to head to the famous Isle to catch this year’s TT – rather than just keep talking about it. I mentioned my escape to some biking kin with most chirping something along the lines of “Yeah, I’ve always wanted to do that”, which got me thinking about putting the ‘ins and outs’ of a TT trip into Kiwi Rider to make things a little easier for others to also chalk up this unforgettable motorcycle pilgrimage. The Isle Of Man is about as far away from New Zealand as it is possible to go without a space suit (probably) although

it has a notably very friendly, almost Kiwi feel, about it. Just with a weird accent. Plonked in the Irish Sea, midway between England’s Liverpool and Ireland’s Dublin, it can be foggy, drizzly, wind-blown, and freezing – sometimes all at once. But, lucky for me, this year was all sunglasses and shorts for the full two weeks of motorcycle mayhem.

GETTING THERE

The first, and not insignificant, step to getting there is to get yourself to the UK. It’s a great time of year to be heading up there, especially if you’re owed holiday, as the TT kicks off at the end of May when things are getting wet and chilly here, and it’s warming up (hopefully) in the northern hemisphere. I flew up via Dubai then directly to Manchester airport, which puts you smack on the right side of Britain, namely the west, and from there it’s a quick 40-minute train ride straight from

Words & photos: Dene Priestley

Ever fancied heading to the ‘Island’ to experience the TT races? Dene Priestley finally ticked it off his bucket list and thinks you should too. It seems many Kiwi riders have a visit to the famous Isle Of Man TT on their ‘to-do’ list, but for one reason or another most never seem to get there. Dene Priestley headed up for this years TT and scribed this to encourage every NZ motorcyclist to bite the bullet, jump on a big bird, head up for next year’s event to witness the worlds greatest road race, and support the kiwi racers while you’re there.

the airport to Liverpool. The following day it was a quick walk to the Mersey’s port to embark on the three-to-four hour highspeed ferry trip to the Isle of Man’s port of Douglas. The Manx (Isle of Man locals) folk I booked a last minute attic room with were sporting enough to pick me up. Easy as. Ferries also run from Dublin and Belfast and some of the Kiwi’s I bumped into were Ireland-bound after the racing to complete a full UK tour. It’s a four meal, 20-movie, seven pit-stop flight up to the UK, so it’s worthwhile tacking on other northern hemisphere sightseeing opportunities or some forgotten friend catch-ups. You can also fly to the Isle from some major UK airports, but it is more expensive and the ferry full of motorcycles, leather and helmet wearers makes for an interestingly social trip. I chummed up with a group of Belgians from Ostend, who were very much bemused by the fact I was also from Ostend, albeit Ostend the suburb on Waiheke Island. Another option is to take your bike with you from NZ, as several Kiwis I met had done. Costing for that is between $3000-$3500 for the shipping plus the compulsory insurance of around $300$400 dollars. It sounds expensive but if you have time to tour Ireland, England, Wales, and Scotland, it offers an epic touring opportunity. And don’t forget Europe is only a short Chunnel-ride away (for the moment anyway – Ed). You might be thinking it would be cheaper to simply hire a bike in the UK and scoot over to the Isle, but the cost for that is on a par, and once you mention you are hiring it to head to the IOM you’ll find availability disappears and/or pricing skyrockets as the Isle has a wee reputation regarding bikes and Mad Sunday (and Monday, Tuesday, Wed...).

THE FAMOUS ISLE

The Isle of Man is a unique place in many ways. With a long history going back to initial habitation by Neolithic settlers, then ancient Celts, invasion by Vikings who loved the place and stayed for centuries, it now has a population of around 100,000 residents and boasts the World’s oldest Parliament, with over a thousand years of democratic governance under its dusty robes. Mind you, that same house of power was also the last in the world to still utilise birching as a court-based penalty for minor offences in 1976. Birching is pretty much bending over after sentencing and getting a good whack or three on the arse with a stiff bunch of birch twigs if you were wee bit naughty. Caught, court, whack! KIWI RIDER

Jock got a phone call inviting him to ride the Flinders Range in Aussie with motorcycle adventurer Sherri Jo Wilkins. She didn’t have time to put the phone down before he’d booked the tickets... Words: Jock McLauchlan / Photos: Sherri Jo Wilkins, Jock McLauchlan

S

herri Jo Wilkins is a proper adventure rider. The real deal, and has a KTM 690R with over 140,000km on the clock to prove it. I’m not just talking about cruising around Aussie here either, which is a challenge in itself; dodging the colossal amount of low IQ feral wildlife that seems intent on trying to kill you, but sadly most often itself, or desperately doing your best not to succumb to dehydration. No, what we are talking about is a genuine epic Round The World three-year adventure. Starting in Japan, via Magadan on the Russian East coast, over the Road of Bones (see KR July/August issues for

Call of the

Chris Stephens’ Road of Bones adventure) all the way West to Spain with the odd sightseeing trip in between, was just the warm up. Toss in Alaska, a lap or two of North and South America and a world record for the highest altitude mountain ever climbed by a woman on a motorcycle (5903 metres up Djos Del Salado in Chile) as the entree and you should be starting to get a picture – yes a real adventure rider. So, when Sherri Jo gets in touch and asks you over for a wee adventure ride around the Flinders Range in South Australia north of Adelaide, you say yes – with farking bells on! However, compared to Sherri Jo I’m an adventure rider in name only. While riding tough terrain does not bother me,

I do not like to rough it in a tent if at all possible. Ever. I am not a cave man. I like a shower at night. I like a nice meal at night. I like a bed at night. I do not like to share my sleeping arrangements with feral venomous stuff that will bite, sting, eat or kill me – of which Australia has far more than is strictly necessary. Yes, in short, I am a princess. Of course, I’m not saying people who like to camp are philistines, oh no! It’s just that after a lifetime working outdoors as a hill country farmer... well, I’ve done that interact with nature thing and I’m kinda over it. So, as you can well imagine some ground rules had to be set... cave dwelling was out for a start, camping was out, cohabiting with unpleasant wildlife was

definitely out and therefore decent food and lodgings was in. But first, a decent motorcycle had to be hired. Enter Mick McDonald of www. compassexpeditions.com and www. bikeroundoz.com. Mick is a top bloke and extremely helpful. Because Adelaide is somewhat of a hire bike backwater, Mick delivered my BMW R1200GS (liquid cooled) hire bike personally, with panniers and a heap of Touratech fruit all the way from Melbourne, over 1000km away. Now that is service! He may not have time to do that for everyone, but the fact he did it at all is quite remarkable. Thank you very much Mick. The BMW day rate hire was $205 including all the Touratech accessories.

Duncan keen to pick up where she left off

N

ew Zealand’s Courtney Duncan is ready again to take on the world’s elite. After an injury-enforced mid-season lay-off, 20-year-old Duncan is determined to pick up exactly where she left off before her devastating accident in May, by winning on the Women’s Motocross World Championships scene. A “novice” on the Grand Prix scene, the Altherm JCR Yamaha Racing Team rider from Palmerston, Otago, stunned the international motocross community when she scored back-toback wins at the night-time series opener in Qatar in February. She then backed that up by finishing the day second overall at round two in The Netherlands just a month later. She suffered a crash in the first race in the deep Dutch sand but recovered to finish fourth – at that stage the only glitch in her campaign – and she underlined her strength and speed by bouncing back to win the next race in commanding fashion, finishing a staggering 25 seconds ahead of Kawasaki’s French former world champion Livia Lancelot. So, with three wins from four starts at those first two rounds, Duncan led the championship standings by seven points from Lancelot, with Dutch Yamaha rider Nancy Van De Ven three points further back in third. Yamaha’s Duncan was sending ripples of panic through the competition and it had looked a mere formality that she would push on and impress again at the four rounds that were to follow. But then tragedy struck at round three in Germany in May. Committed to a jump, the airborne Duncan clipped a photographer standing out on the track and the Kiwi hero was sent tumbling to the dirt. She collected her wits and bravely battled on to finish the race in 12th position, although it was probably only adrenaline that got her there in the end. Her thumb and ankle more seriously injured than she’d first thought, Duncan was unable to start the next race and so her day and her championship hopes were suddenly in tatters. Duncan returned home to New Zealand for immediate

Story: Andy McGechan, bikesportnz.com

surgery and was forced to miss the next two rounds of the championships, in France and Italy respectively. With those developments, Duncan slipped from first to eighth in the standings, while Lancelot has been plugging away near the front to build up a 24-point lead over Van De Ven, with German Suzuki rider Larissa Papenmeier moving up to third overall. Even with Duncan being unable to contest half of the races (in the five rounds) so far run, she is first-equal in number of actual race wins. Duncan has won three of the five races she’s started, while series leader Lancelot has also won three races, albeit after contesting all 10 motos. Van De Ven has also won three times from 10 starts, while Italian Honda rider Kiara Fontanesi won the remaining race. “My championship hopes are long gone,” said Duncan, who in July had a local anaesthetic to have the pin removed from her wrist. She flew to Lommel, in Belgium, in mid-July to begin preparations for round five in Switzerland on August 7. “My physiotherapist has made a wrist brace for me and now I can’t wait to get back on the bike again. My fitness is pretty good because I’ve been in the gym and cycling a lot over the past six weeks. I have not been riding the bike in about seven weeks, so that’s want I need to do most. “I’ve got time before the GP in Switzerland, but I should be all good to go. I can’t wait. It feels like I’ve been off the bike since forever. “I’m not worried about where I finish up in the championship now. That’s been ruined for me. It’s all about setting myself up for next season now.”

When former motocross champion Darryll King speaks, it probably pays to listen. Andy McGechan listened to what he had to say.

Words & photos: Andy McGechan bikesportnz.com

T

he multi-time Australian and New Zealand motocross champion is now aged in his late 40s, but there was a time when this Kiwi rider ruled the roost, before eventually retiring from the World Championship Grand Prix phase of his career in 2000. And the Yamaha ace has plenty more to offer the sport, not just as a coach and mentor, but he also continues to battle on as a feared and respected competitor. The 47-year-old, now living in the Philippines when he’s not at home in Hamilton, raced for the Tauranga Motorcycle Club at the recent Battle of the Clubs (BOTC) fundraiser motocross in Taupo, finishing as the best-performed veterans’ class rider at the event. King took his Yamaha YZ450F to finish fourth (combined vets/MX2 race) and seventh (combined vets/MX1 race) in his two outings, helping his Tauranga crew to finish fourth overall of the 26 teams competing that day. However, those results didn’t really matter to King – it was significant for him simply in that he was able to support the event that had been created to boost

funds for sending a New Zealand team to the Motocross of Nations (MXoN) in Italy this September. King understands more than most the international importance of the MXoN event, having himself been on the threerider teams to compete at the MXoN on an incredible nine separate occasions between 1987 and the year 2000. He was one of the Kiwi trio that stood on the podium, at Foxhills in England, in 1998. He was twice a world 500cc motocross championships runnerup, in 1997 and again in 1998, before abandoning the GP scene at the end of 2000 and returning home. Then, although he had been retired from top international racing for a couple of years and by then in his early 40s, he stunned again when he was able to add yet two more national titles to his CV, winning the New Zealand MX2 (250cc) title in 2011 and again in 2012. King has seen a lot happen in his beloved sport over the years and he has always been keen to put something back, often busy running training schools for young riders, and he was keen to sit down with Kiwi Rider magazine and chat about where the sport has been and where it is heading.

Better yet, it’s available as a vented disc cover in two colour choices. The motorcycle-specific fitting kit is sold separately. Distributor: Darbi Accessories Price: $69 Info: motorcyclegearnz.com

Faster, slimmer and lighter for 2017, the KX250F has its sights set on the top step.

eavily updated in 2015, Kawasaki’s MX2-class KX250F missed out on any upgrades last year – it was the 450’s turn to get some love. For 2017, the 250F gets its place in the sun. Few stones have been left unturned in the search for more power, less weight and better ergonomics. Kawasaki claims chassis group weight savings of 900g and engine group savings of 800g, cutting overall weight by a hefty 1.7kg. In fact, Kawasaki also says the new 250F laps a 1m 55s track some 1.6 seconds faster than last year’s version of the KX250F. That’s a huge time difference. So, just how have the engineers done it?

WHAT’S NEW?

To start with, the engine package has been revised significantly. The motor is in a more upright position (7-degrees forward compared to 14-degrees in 2016), which gives the intake charge a straighter path (downdraft-style) to the inlet valves. Inside the motor, the cylinder has been offset 3mm forwards to reduce piston friction (the piston gets a new coating) and the bore is now plateau-honed for less friction. The crank is new and journal bearings replace needle bearings in the con-rod big-end for further friction reduction. New crank web design gives the crank a 70% balance factor, which Kawasaki says is on a par with its factory machines and reduces engine vibration. All up the mods increase low-end power and boost peak by 1kW (1.3hp). The main frame is new, with several sections of the frame revised, including the downtube which is part forged and part cast (in 2016 it was extruded) to increase stiffness. As well as being stiffer, the main frame beams are 6mm narrower. And borrowed from the KX450F, the swingarm is stiffer and 190g lighter than the 2016 KX250F’s arm. On the suspension front, the forks get a lighter inner tube and a revised shimstack layout and oil level. The spring is slightly firmer too, up from 9.6N/mm to 9.8N/mm. At the rear, the shock gets revised settings. Kawasaki has lowered the top of the fuel tank by some 20mm, which has given the bike a flatter seat to make it easier to move rider weight around. As well as being lower, the fuel tank has gained a little capacity too, now offering 6.4 litres compared to 6.1 litres last year. It doesn’t sound like much but it might be the difference between making it back to the pits or not. KIWI RIDER

Tester Mark Whyte’s KX450F is proof that a few well considered mods can make a huge difference.

I

have been running a Kawasaki KX450F for the last 12 months. It’s my own bike, not a test bike, and I’ve really enjoyed my time with it. The KX has proven itself over the course of the year to be very versatile and extremely reliable. It is also easy to start, hot or cold. One of the things that has really impressed me is the Showa air fork; it works really well, gives good feedback and is nice and smooth through all its stroke. Once the air pressures are set they stay very consistent, and once you’ve found pressures you like, that suit the type of riding you do, it is easy to check and

adjust accordingly. The KX-F is an extremely good turning bike and has amazing front end grip. This is something I noticed the first time I rode the KX-F and is also something Scott Collumb commented on the first time he rode the Kawie 450, he said, “Man, this bike can hold a tight turn”. He’s right. Over the course of the season I’ve made a few changes to personalise the bike to my liking. I fitted an 18-inch rear wheel from Talon, with green hubs for a bit of bling. There’s an Ohlins steering damper and the suspension was re-valved to my liking by the team at Tony Rees Motorcycles.

I left the gearing completely standard. All I’ve had to do to the bike, apart from the obvious air filter cleaning and re-oiling after every ride, are the normal engine oil and oil filter changes. During this time I have done lots of trail riding I have also done the occasional natural terrain MX and the first round of Greg Power’s Gravel Rash series at Maramarua. The power delivery of the KX-F is very smooth, which makes it very easy to ride for longer periods of time without getting to tired, and with the three map options for different terrain I could always find

something that suits my riding style. The engine also has a good rev range and doesn’t run out of power early in the way some other brands of 450 MX bikes seem to do. During the 12 months I have had the Kawasaki KX450F I have been very impressed with the durability of the bike and also how well the plastics have kept in excellent condition and stood up to the knocks and scrapes of the type of riding I do. I have to say that, based on the last 12 months with the KX-F, I can’t wait to get my hands on a new 2017 KX450F!

have years of experience and good reviews from riders touring USA, Australia, Canada, Europe & UK. We can arrange freighting, all customs facilities, holding of crates and shipment of bikes and goods purchased on tour back to New Zealand. We have offices & customs teams throughout USA, Australia, Europe and agencies in Canada and UK. Two years ago we had a family tragedy and had to get back to New Zealand immediately. We were in the back blocks of Colorado. One phone call to Mainfreight in LA and they just sorted everything out. They picked our bikes up from Colorado, sorted out all of the details and shipped the bikes home to us... Bridget Jakicevich Another successful trip to the States for my group and a large part played by yourself and Mainfreight. Looking back has been 8 years now, you have been involved... With out your help I know that it could otherwise be very stressful with much unnecessary time dealing with the minutia to the various agencies involved both in New Zealand and The US.... MONTY’S SUNBEAM

ny list of celebrities who owned motorcycles is bound to include Lawrence of Arabia and his Brough Superior, Steve McQueen and his Triumph, and Elvis Presley and his Honda. But a surprise entry into this elite list was revealed to me by a visitor to the Louwman Museum in the Netherlands recently; none other than Field-Marshall Montgomery, who commanded the Eighth army which won the crucial battle of Alamein in North Africa during World War Two. ‘Monty’, as he was affectionately known, owned a Sunbeam S7. Field Marshall Montgomery was presented, on behalf of the British motorcycle industry, with the 500cc S7 at a 1948 motorcycle show in London. ‘Monty’ kept the motorcycle until 1962, when he gave it to his chauffeur, Michael Cox. When Cox sold it two years later it had clocked only 400km. From 1977 to 2002 it was in the hands of one owner after which it was acquired by the Louwman Museum. The original ownership documents are still there. Incidentally if you are travelling in Europe and find yourself in the Hague, this museum claims to be the world’s oldest automotive private collection, and is worth a look. The designer of the S7, Erling Poppe, was involved in the seemingly pointless demands of the industry to produce a car on two wheels. Most pre-war motorcycles had only front suspension, and in 1946 most available models were much the same as those available prior to the war. The S7, however, offered a fully sprung frame, large soft tyres, and a comfortable riding position. 10,000 were sold until 1956. At the time it was a radical concept, with a single-overheadcamshaft engine, a four-speed gearbox, and an air-cooled 487cc shaft driven, all alloy, tandem twin-cylinder engine, featuring rubber mounting to isolate the rider from the harsh vibration, an idea that would emerge on the Norton Commando twenty years later. The S7’s crankshaft was mounted longitudinally, like a car. It had a duplex cradle frame, and many of the best suspension concepts developed

in pre-war racing, such as telescopic forks and damping, with a rear plunger set-up. Company advertising claimed the S7 was ‘The Most Magnificent Motorcycle in the World’. It was built to be a luxurious and refined tourer, and with a modest 25bhp, few sporting credentials. It was certainly a comfortable tourer, but very expensive at a time when the
