Dave Wyatt (aka The Gastrom Rider) is a great bloke, and he sure gets around. Just before Christmas he invited me to tag along on a ride to a place – typically – he had heard about through the motorcycle grapevine, the Nikau Cave Café at Waikaretu south-west of Auckland. With a Harley-Davidson Road King in the garage and a rare Saturday without any work on I met Dave at a gas station on Auckland’s Constellation Drive and we headed south. Neither of us was in much of a hurry and with Dave’s modded Kawasaki VN2000 rumbling away ahead of me I settled in for what turned out to be a pearler of a ride. Now if you want to visit the café yourself please do, head in fact to www.nikaucave.co.nz to check it out and get instructions. Just don’t ask me. Dave had a sort-of idea where he was going though (check out www.kiwirider.co.nz for an entertaining little video of the ride) so I just kept him in sight and allowed the warm eddies of early summer air to wash over me.

LIFE’S TOO SHORT You never really know with cafés, of course, particularly ones (usually in the city) which have just changed hands, or those on heavily trafficked main road routes. Life, as they say, is too short to put up with bad coffee. I simply can’t speak highly enough of the quaint, quirky Nikau Cave Café though. JEWEL IN THE UNDERBRUSH New Zealand being New Zealand, of course, the Nikau Cave Café can’t be the only little ‘jewel in the underbrush.’ I know, the best Flat White (bar the ones James brews specially for me at Auckland’s downtown Shed 5) I’ve ever had was in Oamaru and one of my own favourite café finds was in Lumsden, half way between Invercargill and Kingston at the bottom of the South Island.
