Did you go to the second Buckley Systems New Zealand Speedway Grand Prix at Western Springs? I did and for a second year in a row I thoroughly enjoyed it. What got me, sitting with mates on the hard concrete stands on the city side of the track, however, was how small the crowd was. This, after-all, was the opening round of the only genuine world championship motorcycle event this country is going to see this year, yet the crowd was down on that of the previous year.

LEADFOOT FESTIVAL The day after, I dropped in on the wonderfully off-beat Leadfoot Festival meeting at rally ace Rod Millen’s Coromandel Peninsula property and the situation was the same. There was a hard-core group of car guys ‘n gals, many of whom I recognised from my visit to the event a year ago, and that was about it. OK, the Leadfoot had serious competition this year from Whangamata’s Beach Hop just down the road. Yet both are three day events. Surely that’s an opportunity to make a weekend of it and take in both events? Apparently not. Sure it’s easy for someone like me to come across all high and mighty – I had media passes for both events (which will be covered in greater detail next month). I also appreciate that times are tough and that by the time you take food, accommodation and time off work attending either event into account a trip to either

‘I’ll be back to both events next year, as I hope will more of you’ can cost hundreds of dollars. But surely an event like the Speedway GP (the only round held in the Southern Hemisphere) is a ‘must-go-to,’ even if – like me and most other ordinary, everyday motorcycle enthusiasts, you only have a passing knowledge of the sport. In fact that’s probably what I liked most being at ‘the Springs; constantly referring back to the programme to find out more about a particular rider and/or the order of racing. I haven’t done that at a motorbike event since I was a kid. ALL CHANGE Note here, too, that I’m not referring to regular national championship events like the annual Road Race or MX champs. Ordinary, everyday spectators stopped going to those years ago, preferring – or so it seems – to sit in front of Sky and watch MotoGP, AMA SX or World Superbikes. No, I’m talking about what in effect are one-off, once-a-year events, events which – despite their differences – both need a large, vibrant group of spectators ‘in the stalls’ to complement - sindeed validate - what’s happening on the stage. I’ll be back to both events next year, as I hope will more of you. As the old saying goes, ‘use it or lose it!’ ■
