This is one of those “must have” products for any bike without a center stand. It’s also one of those “why didn’t I think of that?” ideas, the concept is simple, unique and cool all at once. To use the Rollastand you place it on the ground in front of the tyre you want to rotate, then roll the bike up and over one of the rollers so that the tire is located between the two, then place the bike on its side stand. Once the wheel is up on the Rollastand, it’s a simple matter of turning the wheel by hand to check tire pressure, clean the rim or lube the chain. It works just as easily on either the front or rear tyre. The sealed bearings are exceptionally smooth with no play or unwanted movement and the bottom of the base has rubber pads which prevent it from sliding around.

LOOKING FOR ADVENTURE (TYRES)?

When I was invited to the famous KTM-backed Capital Coast adventure Ride I approached Publisher Vege (Pete McPhee) for advice as to what tyres I should run on my KTM 950 Adventure.

much as 8psi less in off-road conditions, but to avoid excessively low pressures without rim-locks to avoid the tyre slipping on the rim (which can tear out valve stems).

Fortuitously Northern Accessories contacted him shortly after, suggesting he get someone to test Michelin’s new Desert Adventure Tyre. All I had to do was rock up to Auckland tyre and accessories specialist Cycletreads (on Barry’s Pt Rd on the North Shore) and the lads there would, apparently, do the rest!

I stayed with the original pressures throughout the test and had no issues with the tyres slipping on the rims even under extreme duress.

Cycletreads’ workshop looks clean enough to perform surgery in and the staff are super friendly, efficient and their expertise is immediately obvious. The sizes recommended for the KTM 950, by the way, were 90/90-21 front and 140/80-18 rear.

PRESSURE TEST To maximise grip and tyre wear, the technician suggested pressures of 38 psi rear and 36 front.

He also said that I could go down as 116 KIWI RIDER

SERIOUS STUFF As the Michelin Deserts are a serious off-road tyre, they have a tread pattern to match. The front has deep aggressive looking knobs and the rear, large deep blocks. I don’t mind admitting I was initially sceptical how tyres with an offroad focus would perform on a large road bike, but I needn’t have worried; grip from the front was prodigious both on and offroad and in over 2,000kms I didn’t have a single moment of concern.

Impressively, after our ride to Wellington (1,000kms of heavy abuse), the front still looked new. Rear end grip on my KTM is less than perfect, but the

rear Michelin did an admirable job of dealing with 95hp. Particularly impressive was its ability to hook up in dirt conditions and drive 300+kgs of man and machine up steep slippery inclines.

CONFIDENCE-INSPIRING Lateral grip was also confidence-inspiring from front and rear, both on and off the tarseal. The rear tyre was showing obvious signs of wear after approximately 2,300kms, but the front would easily have handled another 1,500km of abuse.

If you use these tyres in predominantly off-road conditions and/or with judicious use of the throttle (unlike myself), you could happily expect to get nearly double that mileage.

Overall I felt the Michelin Desert performed well both on and off the road and at RRP of $179 (front) and $269 (rear) they are certainly worth consideration.

GYTR PRODUCT PROMOTION STEP 1 There is a huge range of products available through any Yamaha dealer to completely overhaul the look, protection and performance of all Yamaha models, including the WR250R. First in a long line of bolt-on bliss for us is the factory tuned GYTR Slip-On Muffler. Made from brushed aluminium and stainless steel, the GYTR muffler is both stronger and considerably lighter than the standard WR250R unit. Following the simplified included instructions we found the GYTR Slip-On Muffler easy to install.

As well as a improvement in response across the rev range the other major benefit of the GYTR Slip-On Muffler is the unit’s ability to be retro-fitted with the standard heat shield – most aftermarket brands will not integrate the heat shield leaving your inside right thigh wide open to excess heat.

PLATE HOLDER Included with the muffler in our first consignment from Yamaha Motor NZ was a GYTR Off-Road Number Plate Holder. It eliminates the long, dangly standard (which we get as part of an Aussie ADR requirement) number plate holder and is made from strong lightweight alloy.

Necessary bolts and nuts are included, as are installation instructions. The plate holder requires slight modification of the lower rear tail light cover, but once

mounted in place it sure does tidy up the rear end of the bike.

TYRES During the past month the WR250R has seen a large mixture of asphalt, gravel, sand and dirt. Because of this we opted for a set of Adventure-spec knobbies from Michelin, the T63s. The T63 is famous for conquering the Dakar so it’s obvious this is a rubber combo with a high degree of versatility.

The 90/90-21” T63 front is probably a little narrow for the front wheel and struggles a little bit in the real mud. However on the road it’s seriously awesome, and definitely an option with a lot more compromise than a full-blown knobbie.

Out back a 120/80-18” T63 slipped its way over the rim and as soon as it was scrubbed in, it was evident this beasty was up to the job. Performance on the asphalt was confidence-inspiring (without the ‘thruuuuum’ you usually get with knobbies on the road) and stellar on everything ‘off-road’ from gravel to thick slop.
