First word Ross MacKay Say it quickly and it doesn’t sound so bad. But the $2.86 billion (estimated and sure to rise) it’s going to cost to build the Auckland City Centre Rail Loop is a frankly incredible amount of money in anyone’s language – particularly in such a de-centralised, low population density city like my adopted ‘home town’ where the number of people set to benefit from it is going to be so small. As a long-time resident – and ratepayer – of the city I’m certainly no Luddite. And I definitely don’t – ever – want a return to the dark old days when Mayors like Christine Fletcher realised that to stay in office all you had to do was NOT spend any money on infrastructure… At least under past Mayor John Banks work began again on joining up the various motorways, work which has continued under new man Len Brown.

THE OBVIOUS ANSWER As a life-long motorcyclist, though, I sometimes despair that the obvious answer to Auckland’s congestion problems - less cars and more motorcycles - is under their nose. Every school holiday period, stressed commuters – by far the majority of them the single-occupants of cars – celebrate the fact that the roads are less congested because there are no schoolrun mums on the road. It’s the same over the Christmas/New Year break, when half the population has de-camped to the Bay of Islands or Coromandel. The city’s existing road and motorway network is a pleasure to use. Imagine, then, if you replaced even – say – 10 to 25% of the cars currently using Auckland’s roads with motorcycles. The effect would be the same….meaning we wouldn’t need to spend ka-trillions on a rail-loop, or even more billions on even wider roads. Thousands (of suitable bikes) are already sitting unused Monday-to-Friday in garages and/or sheds around the greater Auckland isthmus so you’d target the owners of those first.

Create a campaign based on a helmet sticker/jacket patch/etc ‘I’m doing my bit for Auckland’ slogan. Offer discounted fuel vouchers to riders who sign on and allow signed and stickered-up riders free reign of all bus lanes (including the wasteful, so-far-exclusive, lane on the North Shore). That’s going to attract the attention of those without bikes so hit them up next with discounts on bikes and gear for those who want to join the ‘I’m-doingmy-bit-for-Auckland’ movement. Obviously we’d need more parking spaces around the city for motorcycles. But not the hectares cars need. WHAT ABOUT PUSH BIKES? Because they seem to be both better organised and better represented, bicycle riders are currently getting more of a hearing than we motorcycle riders are. However, while push bikes might be great for kids to ride to school, or for risking life and limb trying to get and/or stay fit, they can’t hold a candle to their powered equivalent when it comes to commuting. For a start you can’t use them on motorways. And they really only work as a single person transportation tool if the rider dresses in wind-cheating lycra and a lightweight helmet. Mandate proper safety gear (abrasionresident pants similar to the ones MX riders wear, a reinforced shirt with body armour plus a set of abrasion-resistant gloves and proper BMX or MTB-style full-face helmet for the inevitable tumble) and things would be very different. But what do you think? We had a fantastic response to my offer, last month, to e-mail out copies of our ‘Lane-splitting is Legal’ article so it’s obvious we have readers as concerned about the issue of day-to-day riding as I am.
