Taichung Railway Park

01-City Medium Although located in the center of the city, the area surrounding Taichung’s railway in the west district are quite lack of activities. The railway that should’ve connect people became a barrier. However as recently the railway is risen above ground level due to one of city’s projects, there is a chance now to develope the freed, yet still desolate spaces there, into a true city’s center.

Conventional Space Distorted

02-General Method Design People’s perception of environment will slowly fade as time passes, soon or later, leaving only a faint, simple impression. This phenomenon might be caused by the lack of feeling of environment and planarization. However, if we insert an constant variable, or a medium that react and magnify the variable, enabling people to conduct or observe new and different interaction, it might be possible that a space to not be repeating and distancing anymore.

Babel Diorama

03-Virtual Architecture Dhaka used to be a prosperous city, it's citizen thrived, and faithful to the sacred Allah. However as

the climate worsen every year, constantly struck by floods and hurricanes, the city starts to wither. this city needs an solution more than ever, but it never came. Not because of lacking fund nor technical knowledge, but because of blind stubbornness. Religious leader refuses to let the city be tainted by the towering structures, insisting that to build a modern Babel will only attract his wrath, only the great mosque can be the center of this city, And every flood struck is his warning to our arrogance and blasphemy. Water used to be Dhaka's vital, but now it's curse.

Some people choose to leave, most people adapt, as there were nowhere else to go. Floods after floods not only washed away homes, but also faiths. People starts to question, will God punish people trying to survive? People were promised that rebirth comes with destruction, but after the destruction, there is only broken homes and people, awaiting the next disaster to struck. Maybe ancient humans who built Babel are also trying to avoid disaster. With the doubt to the way of religious leaders grow inside every citizen, a religious revolution ignited. Enlightened, people no longer blinded by strict rules and words, they united and drag down their leaders, and finally, rebuild Dhaka...

Bov’ton of Dhaka Dhaka is the capital of Bangledesh, the city had stood proudly in the delta of Ganga river for more than half a millenia. However due to increasing extreme climate, the city is under crisis, severe flooding has plagued the city. However, Its resiliant citizens managed to adapt to the city in water, and thus formed a new kind of city scape. Bov’ton is the name Dhakan give to their unique roof top streets, which is the acronym of “Town Above”. Through time, Bov’ton not only became a mean to travel across the city, but also became a part of every citizens’ life. While Various shops and activities thrive on this tranditionally “dull” space, to a not experienced person, this place is prove very hard to navigating, complicated route plan is needed just to get to a friend’s place.

“I h a v e me mo r ie s o f t his house since my childhood, most of t hem are blurry, but some o f t h e m I ’ ll pr o ba bly never forget . The lit tle shards of memories from corners of this n e ig h b o r h o o d, my r oom, top yard, the rust y book st ore of my f ather, all these pieces mak es, well...me.”

New Home As roof top streets “bov’ton” is the new way to travel around, houses’ form and it’s accessories changes too. Racks and tents are assebled as market is moved to the roof. Pavilions, scaffoldings are built around balcony as it is now the front yard. Old and new stores alike, starts to put up signs, seats and samples on roof to attract costomer, as lower part of the building is usually transformed into storage or docks to house boats. Although Dhaka is resilient enough to adapt the flooded environment, but in reality, citizen’s lives in constant fear, ever threaten by another bad weather. And buildings across city are constantly underwater, slowly eroding, this is a danger waitng to be ignited. To solve these problem, a plan is needed.

“N o t mu c h pe o p le g o e s t o t h e mosque every Friday t hese day, t he Enlightenment Era changes a lo t o f pe o p le , bu t n o t me . Going to mosque has become a get away f rom the cramp and busy b o v ’ t o n . N o t t h r o u g h pr a y ing t hough, but chatting wit h M ullah, he’s k ind of lik e my grandpa s la s h me n t o r . W e wo u ld c h ill at t he squared yard in the mosque, not much open space this large remains nowadays.”

Old Mosque As of the Enlightment Era in 2070s, plus constantly living in despair, people starts to question the strict rules and practice of their religion. And slowly, people changed their view of God, Although remaining faithful, but not not binded by it. The change of heart in citizens however, doesnt affect the Mosque’s nature. A few decades ago, Mosque is viewed as the most sacred building in the city, it is the heart of the city, teaming with people to pray. and after praying, neighbors and friends spends the friday afternoon together.

The first step is the bangaltower, combining multiple programs including HSR station, activity center, and a mosque. The tower is to be the vocal point of other upcoming project and construction.

As construction is under process, the surrounding area is removed to make way for new programs in the project. While the city’s rim is being decomposed to feed the construction’s material need.

After the religion revolution

Great Mosque

After the enlightenment in 2060s, Dhaka’s people have an new perspective on religion. They start to question the strict rules of the sacred Quran, yet, remaining faithful to Allah. This is reflected on this building as this is not a traditional mosque, but a reinterpreted idea of it.

This towering mosque is unlike any other mosque format, yet remaining true to the various meaning of what a mosque should be: connecting people, humble, respect of god, and help others. The decorative wall facing Mecha is a islamic pattern shade, luming lights into this sacred hall.

-

Mosque Cleansing pool Railway transition station Activity center “These towers started to pop out rapidly in downtown, B and I were shocked how fast it was built, I mean we already know that there are such tech out there, but watching by your eyes is another thing. A 800 metre building taking a few weeks to complete? Its mindblowing. They said that it is made possible by the hundreds of printing machines, working twenty-four-seven. At this rapid rate, I think I can feel the city recovering.

Lone Island As of the Dhaka Hive project begins, countless people signed the “Home Exchange” agreement, and gradually move into the finished quaters in the Hive. However, some people refuses to give up their home, gaurding what they have left: an identity and memory. As their neighbors’ former houses gets tear down, and government aid program leaving, these people lives an isolated life on their island with satisfactory, preserving what Dhaka used to be. One such example is the house of Amel. “These scattered places are the only one left that one can get a glimpse of what life is before Hive. As I visit a number of them, I find that each of those homes usually carries a special trait, some are a fish town, some are like a museum full of relics, some were simply full of greens in there yard. Maybe those who dare to live by themselves have held on to a somewhat unique perspective too.”

"I leave, although many tell me to stay, I went for one of the so called "islands", hoping one of those welcomed me or isn't occupied any more.

Plant life At an era where plants are harder maintain with most land flooded, this is uncommon and requires lots of effort.

Past

Scenery

While the city is still intact, very few people noticed this unusual house. It is untill the neighboring buildings are gone that here is finally noticed.

Most of the decorations and modifications are done together with Owner’s family or friend which makes this place more valuable to him.

Banyan Tree One of the most iconic scene of Tamkang is it prosperous greens. Most of the trees are Banyans, all are more than 20 years old. Due to their age, they’ve grown large and many interesting patterns can be found. Especialy, the ones in site grown recklessly. They provide students a shadow to rest and form a hallway to various buildings. Thier fascinating features and importance gave me the concept of the pavillion.

Path of students

Form study

One of the hub in school, site’s route of people is complicated, yet with order. I’ve tried to embed an divice in the order, not disturbing it while providing a spot to rest.

Using the idea of Banyan tree, I’ve use wood to mimic a silent movement of a tree, a twist of force, yet offering a place to rest.

Unit concept From a past project, this unit is able to join in different angles. Combined with previous concept, it might be the right structure to form my pavillion.

Altered Altered to met the structural strength, and able to combine infinitely. Using steel as bone structure and wood as secondary and decorative skin.

Base surface process Using analyzed data, the shape of the basic shape is determined. In addition, studying ergonomics, I made the surface top accesible.

Early render Combining previous works, the semi-final image of the pavilion is done, though after a few more study, I removed the hole in center and add a supporting steel structure beneath.

Final product Adding seats and stairs to enhance the accessbility and funtion, while maintaining the form. The wide gap between allows people to walk through without difficulties.

Originally a argricultual village, after Japanese government occupied Taiwan, it became an air force complex’s dormitory. After the great war and Chinese civil war, soldiers from main land and their families settled here. However, in 1996, new laws forced the villagers to move. Since then, the village stayed unmaned, slowly decaying.

Jing-Shing Social Housing

06-Social Housing At Datong district, the street is filled with history, with many old-time buildings and declining businesses. However, with poor management and almost to none renewal plans from city government leaveing the neighborhood in a very poor condition. And making the matter more complicate, the district’s populationis very old, with 26% older than 65. To try to find a solution, we form an urban plan, renewing historical site and pathway, adding new social housing plans, and new river shore bike lanes and comercial blocks. And to put up a template for this plan’s social housing, the designing of this appartment starts.

A wide space is a good feature and allows various activities, but on the other hand, the usage of this space will be quite low, due to its size and lack of obstacle.

With many programs, orignal or additioned, the relation is complex. To make the user’s route and sense clear, using types of users to organize the connection.

Though there are plenty of space, the community activity is relatively low. The lack of a community hub and the over large community highrise made the residents hard to join of form an active community.

Students and elders are often left alone or with each other while their parents or children are working. In addition, there a number of elders that live alone, this make the site in need for caring services.

Unity

Make the space in community able to let residents know and familiarize each other, most of all to look after each other

Adding caring program in community, take care of the weak and those who need a hand

Create classrooms, workshops, lectures to spred knowledge, not only for students, but also the unemployed and people new to society

Create a fair platform for residents to discuss issues and solve problems, unite local community, and aim for a better community

A welcoming space

To make the full potential out of a land, many buildings will stand right next to the sidewalk, even on verticle side, yet this gives people pressure, which is exactly not a community building needs. The space should be relaxing and give an expression of welcoming and sharing. SHOP/ PL A ZZA/ P ERFORM / FOOD B A NK / e tc

Constant flow of knowledge

Different from the previous analysis, which is space for short conversations, the space for a long and meaningful conversation is needed. To create a space which can be used for long interaction yet not loose the flow of people, it can be placed in a retreated spot near crossway. People are still able to know the subject, but not disturbing the conversation.

Using form studies, the basic shape of the architecture is determined, adding programs and details, altering minor parts accordingly and adding details to make every space is loyal to the analysis prior. Alas, changing minor structural details and additional routes.

The large space in midst of the architecture is a hub of every program inside, routes twine inside while providing various platforms for rest and communicate. First floor is composed of various outdoor spaces, lobby and food bank. Second floor is primarily classrooms of various subjects and a community restaurant. Third floor has other classrooms and an office with conference room. On the top is a community theatre.

As prior mentioned, the large space embed in is a hub of various route and program, residents can meet and conversate here. Many openings are head north, to a small green. Sun lights can shine upon every room in the architecture, parents can work while seeing children playing on the green.

GF - 3F ; PLAN There are three ways to go to top, the elevator, the stair complex surrounding middle, and the route on the out side. The stair complex is entered via a bookshelf-stair, children can read books together while waiting their parents come to pick them up.

Tamsui Art Festival Center

08-Art & Activity Center Surrounded by mountains and rivers since the first immigrant stepped on land, the spetacular

scene of nature became the beacon and pride of Tamsui’s people. In recent years, growing economy and population explosion brings tourism and investments. However, while growing in a fast pace, the iconic beacons of Tamsui is slowly blocked by new houses and divided by avenues. The purpose of Tamsui seems to be not on nature anymore, but in markets and giftshops. Now there’s a chance for it to change, to extend across roads and buildings, reconect nature to man, make Tamsui great again.

SOUTH PERSPECTIVE The building in south is for various activities, the large staircase can be used as seats for performance, the view platform allows people to rest after touring the old streets, there is also an coffee shop, providing beverages and information.

In the final product, there are two buildings, one for rest and performance, another for exhibition andother indoor activities such as book shop. The large hall and high ceiling in exhibition hall is the requirement of the annual art festival in Tamsui, which prepares lots of art work, some of them are very large

Nan-Jichang Elementary School

09-Elementary School Being at one of the area with lowest income in Taipei city, Nanjichang face many social issues, however in recent years, with the town member’s effort, the neighborhood is slowly improving. Many community care system and programs are established and working great. However, the place is still in need of hardwares and public installations, and most of the existing ones are aged. This gives the reason and opportunity to combine pubic installations and elementary in to one, as the start of renewal of the once glorious Nanjichang.

Pocket spaces

Between classrooms, adding a resting platform can increase interaction and give this group of students a private space of themselves. Not only between programs, in a large space like library, creating a place with utility can increase the usage of the program. Various pocket space can make activities happen more often. No s he lte r

The lack of usage in wide space

Space of activities

A wide space is a good feature and allows various activities, but on the other hand, the usage of this space will be quite low, due to its size and lack of obstacle. To choose one is to sacrifice another, but in this case, there is a large park nearby. Therefor the method of site is to create fragmented space.

Using site analysis, the axis and program’s location is determined, the private and public space of them and interactions with community is also set. Using these data, the basic shape of the architecture has emerged.

Additionaly, the architecture around of site is iconic, it’s the Nanjichang appartments, once were the most advanced resident in all of Taiwan. Try to inherit the iconic symbol and spirit, I developed the shape of school using them as an inspiration.

SOUTH WEST ISOMETRIC VIEW On regular days, there are two entrys to school, but in special occasions, the programs on the ground level can open it lland windows, allowing access from comminity.

The kindergarten and daycare are spread in two levels, they are connected by an staircase bookshelf, allowing childrens to rest and read books on it. They are isolated from other programs to avoid interfierence and security issue.

Eight limbs′ idea comes from Pelagia′s ability to move in various direction due to it′s 8 rhopalia loacated in umbrella′s edge. While the movements of the unit comes from the analysis of Pelagia exercising. The device imitates the water current in Pelagia, flowing between the in and out through the force of pressure.

Learning From Cases

Windows The simple shape of the outer window makes the light pouring in stable, therefore serves great as a furniture display.

Position Each entity‵s position are calculated making the structure stable.

But the window can also serves as a guide to the visitors, the big window can attrack people, pulling people form a side to another.

Route Although on the outer side the structure look complicated, but the route inside is relatively simple.

Window Guided The route of Vitrahaus if see as a whole is a counterclockwise rotation, Visitor′s sub-conscious, due to the counter clockwise route, will know the direction in higher level.

The window of this structure is sharp-pentagon shape, making the light pouring in stable, which is good for interior design desplay

Bias and Truth

Imperial March

Canon

Fur Elise

Perspective Agressive for Imperial March, calm and peaceful for Canon, and hesitation for Fur Elise. Using three iconic, yet very different music, I merged these concepts togther and edit a new music, Perspective. I uses the contrary of Imperial March and Canon as two sides of a incident, and the hesitation of Fur Elise as the conflict between them, forming Bias.

Video I made a video to express what I thought about ďź‚perspectiveďź‚. By flashing controversial figures in history between peaceful images, I shown my definition of perspective.

Montage To express my definition of perspective. Covered in layers within layers, the truth is complicated. For someone, a imformation might benefit them, but for others it can be bad for their image, After all, it′s all about perspective.
