"The sea is calm tonight.
HIGH The tideMARINA is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay. ... Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,

LAYERS, LAYERS, LAYERS

By Cassandra Chapa

Fashion has always had two functions: comfort and expression. We want to be confident in what we wear as it reflects our character, but we also want that same attire to cooperate with us throughout the day. The holidays are coming soon, and it is in our best interest to start layering clothes (if you haven’t already!). It may be freezing outside, but the minute you get inside a heated room, you’ll forget what it even felt like the minute before. Layering makes this process easier, as garments of clothing can be removed quickly. It also creates air pockets that keep us warm, which is ideal at this time of year. Inner layers of clothing should be thin –– like a long sleeve of a thermal underwear top –– while bulky pieces should be kept at the top. Be careful with these types of puffy coats and oversized sweaters though, as layering more than one can leave you feeling more restricted than warm. Feel free to play around with layering different colors and fabrics this season, and happy holidays!

SHOE RELEASES The Christmas season is coming up which means launches from all types of companies are coming. The shoe industry is especially hectic during this time of year, not only from Christmas inspired apparel, but relaunches too. From a Yeezy to a Jordan, here you will see what’s coming out this Christmas.

jordan 11 Concords

One of the most popular color-ways of the Jordan 11 is the black and white Concords. They were first introduced in 1995 when Michael Jordan first walked out onto the court with them on. The shoe has gone through a few transitions but each time has been a knock out seller. Looking around the school, kids either have the space jam or red color way, so I’m sure these will be popular among the students here. They retail for $220 and release on December 8th.

Off white x nike

This is not one particular shoe, but rather an array of shoes. They are redesigned versions of already existing shoes, such as the Air Force 1 and the Zoom Fly. They range at about $170, each depending on the style and where you buy them. Despite being $170, their resell value is as high as $800 depending on your shoe size and where you buy them. Looking around school, you won’t see Off-White on an average person. But for a hypebeast, these are a must.

jordan 1 “not for resale” Though these are already released, they were a shoe I was most excited for. Originally costing $160, they released on November 14th in red and yellow. As of right now, the resale value is right over $1600. The shoe was extremely hard to get, with most people not knowing where to get them. Right now, you can only get them in select sizes from people who got the shoe to resell.

These aren’t all the shoes coming out this holiday season, but they are some of the most exciting. From a collaboration to a restock, you can find them all this holiday season.

MAIN STORY

With the holidays approaching, it is time to get in the mood for celebration! This month, we dived deep into what makes our Mariner family unique. We thought it was the perfect time to explore those wacky traditions that make each family special. This time around the year, my family likes to take the traditional side of Thanksgiving. Every year, my aunt plans out a “simple” Thanksgiving –– only a few family members with only the holiday’s essentials (mashed potatoes, Mexican good, turkey, and soggy stuffing). However, the day of the feast, the “simple” celebration turns into a gathering of the masses. Every family member passes by to pick up a plate of food and many stay late into the night. Some cousins eventually leave for the Black Friday bargains, but most stay for the endless Costco pumpkin pie, whipped cream waterfalls, and a long game of loteria (Bingo from Mexico, but with pictures and dries beans. Given our Mexican heritage, there would be no Thanksgiving without dishes like pozole, tamales, Peruvian beans, enchilada, and a classic sweet bread casserole with a delicious name: capirotada. Now the food, of course is the best part. But one of my favorite “almost traditions” during Thanksgiving dinner would have to be the annual power outage. This may shock you, but every year, an unknowing cousin or aunt turns on the microwave, while the oven is cooking the turkey and the stove is warming up the beans. The houses’ power goes out, shutting off all kitchen appliances and the lights around the house. Every year, we laugh and cheer on the person who caused this and spend the next few minutes trying to fix the electrical malfunction! Over the years, my family has embraced the holiday more and more. They love the idea of giving thanks for everything that happened during the year. Whether or not you are celebrating the success of the pilgrims at Plymouth, you can enjoy the warmth of people that are thankful for every piece of the imperfect, boisterous, passionate family you have the pleasures of being a part of!

Despite not having a declared religion, my family and I love celebrating Christmas! For us, it’s a month long
festival of family traditions. Starting on December 1st, my family also partakes in a customized advent calendar known as “socks”. Yes, it’s made up. Yes it’s weird, but bare with me. My mother started this tradition while my brother and I were little. Essentially, 24 pairs of socks are hung up by the fireplace, each sock within a pair having a similar treat to its mate. On even days, I choose the pair, and who (out of my brother and I) gets each sock. My brother chooses on odd days (because his birthday is on an odd day in December). Then, my brother and I run into our mom’s room where we open the strange gifts she has placed in the socks. Sometimes they are cute, like squinkies. Sometimes they are sweet, like chocolate, and sometimes they are weird, like hot sauce or mini boxes. Next, we partake in an event that I look forward to all year –– Dickens Fair. If you’re familiar with A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens –– a story filled with Christmas Eve partying, dancing, and shopping during the Victorian era in London –– then you might guess what Dickens Fair is. In San Francisco, people from all over dress up in their finest Victorian attire to wander the streets of London, while exploring the culture through food, dance, and shopping. It is super fun –– something completely unique and iconic to our traditions. However, probably the strangest tradition we have is our Christmas “tree”. Not only are our ornaments weird, being that they are all keychains from the various places we have visited (there are about 150 of them, currently), but also the materials that make up out “tree” are extremely unexpected. Instead of buying a fake tree, or cutting one down, we decided to buy tomato cages. Two red cages, a silver cage, and green stakes to hold them together at different levels. The cages are stacked upside down, where they are strung with lights and decorated like any normal tree –– keychains and all. It really is a beautiful Christmas… just a bit special

As someone who lives in a traditional Filipino household, I have experienced many of my culture’s Christmas traditions, some of which are quite different from the typical American traditions. First of all, we begin to celebrate Christmas in September. In the Philippines, any month that ends in “-ber” is considered a holiday season. Basically, Christmas is celebrated for four months. While this tradition is something that my family hasn’t done since they emigrated here, my parents begin to send holiday greetings to my relatives in the Philippines and also think about what gifts they need to buy during September. Another common tradition is hanging up a parol: a Filipino Christmas lantern. This particular tradition is one of the more religious ones. It is considered essential to hang up a parol along with putting up a Christmas tree. Since my family is Catholic, we believe the parol symbolizes the star of Bethelehem, which is what led the three kings to baby Jesus after he had been born. Another tradition in my family is to attend mass on the days leading up to Christmas. We attend “Simbang Gabi” (which translates to “evening mass” for nine consecutive evenings, starting on December 16th and ending on the 24th. On the 24th, we attend midnight mass, which is basically Christmas Day

mass due to the fact that it would be already Christmas morning.   Finally, most families open presents on Christmas Day, right? Well my family opens their gifts on Christmas Eve! Most filipinos celebrate Christmas on the 24th, and everyone generally stays up much later than usual; therefore, it would be convenient to just open presents on Christmas Eve. Now, although Filipinos have their own Christmas traditions, i’ve been able to experience the best of both of my worlds: both Filipino and American. I find them all to be fun and enjoyable and I have always looked forward to celebrating Christmas with my family. I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas, or as Filipinos say, Maligayang Pasko!
