A study in the mid-90s proved the positive effects. After having watched funny movies, people got taken blood samples. They all had an increased concentration of antibodies, immune cells, and the so-called gamma interferon. This protein is jointly responsible for the production of the body‘s own immune substances. Laughter actually does activate the immune system.

From its very foundation in 2007, the Heart Center of the University Hospital Cologne was a research center of international standing and one of the leading clinics in Germany providing state-of-the-art therapies. The Heart Center attaches great importance to minimally invasive procedures for as many operations as possible. In addition, innovative procedures are also carried out, such as stem cell transplants and organ preservation (lung, heart), together with circulatory research to protect the organ during heart surgery (brain, kidneys, heart).

In Cologne, you’ll find comprehensive cardiological expertise with a focus on congenital and acquired heart defects as well as chronic cardiological and pneumological diseases. It also has a well-known specialty department for infant and pediatric surgery. As part of this interdisciplinary strategy, Cologne has the most modern hybrid heart operating room in Europe. In addition, the Municipal Hospital‘s Center for Cardiology and Rhythmology has just opened the “Cardiology of the Future”. We all dream of a world without cancer. In Cologne, we join all our forces to get a little closer to this dream every day. Oncology is in a constant state of flux – new technologies, diagnostic procedures and treatment options are ever setting new standards in the treatment of almost all types of cancer. And with increasing digitalization, this process is getting faster every day.

In order to not only keep pace with this development, but also to decisively shape and drive it forward, no less than four university hospitals decided to pool their expertise in 2018. The university cancer centers in Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf formed the CIO – the Center for Integrated Oncology. Only one year later it became a Center of Excellence awarded by the German Cancer Aid. An international panel of experts has certified that the CIO has significantly advanced cancer medicine and provides patient care at the highest level. Many of CIO‘s experts are leaders in their respective fields and make important contributions to national guidelines for the treatment of various cancers. With its unparalleled combination of expertise, the CIO is capable of

treating all types of tumors and has a wide range of therapeutic approaches. Notably, such as metastasis surgery, immunotherapy with trifunctional antibodies, individual chemotherapy, stem cell therapy and regenerative therapy, enzyme therapy, cannabis therapy, and also complementary medicine. The range of services includes interdisciplinary tumor clinics and tumor boards, psycho-oncological and palliative care, together with interdisciplinary oncology project groups, offering every tumor patient individual care on an interdisciplinary level.

Question HC: Mr Maus, we’re sitting here in the impressive sehkraft eye centre in the heart of Cologne’s city centre. Could you explain a bit about your centre and range of medical services you offer? What makes sehkraft stand out from the crowd?

Answer Mr Maus: As early as 1992, sehkraft was one of the first centres in the world to use modern laser technology on patients. We were and continue to be fascinated by the possibility that we can give patients perfect vision in a few minutes without them having to use glasses or contact lenses. Doing this to the highest levels of perfection is a passion shared by our entire team.

We have specialised in the application of innovative lasers in ophthalmology for 30 years now. We have helped to drive forward the development of these technologies and are privileged to have the longest-standing experience with them in Europe, comprising more than 100,000 successful LASIK treatments.

We also use this expertise in refractive lens surgery. We give cataract patients back the sight they had in their youth by using e.g. highly innovative lenses by Zeiss. The use of floater lasers means that we can resolve vitreous opacities without complex surgery. We are also one of the few clinics in Europe that is able to halt the progression of AMD and thus prevent blindness in old age.

Question HC: In your opinion, what makes Cologne stand out as a centre of medicine?

Answer Mr Maus: In Cologne, teaching, research and application go hand in hand. In addition to the university, there are numerous other excellent medical institutions here. Cologne is home to a large number of international specialists who do of course prize robust collaboration. Research is also carried out to

Question HC: When you’ve lived and worked in Cologne for as long as as you have, you’re bound to know it well. Can you give our readers two tips for their trip to Cologne? What, in your opinion, is an absolute must-see? And do you have a restaurant that you’d recommend?

Answer Mr Maus: The cathedral is of course a must. But the Romanesque churches, the many galleries, the chocolate museum and the Rhine are what make our city so pretty. The Alfredo restaurant on a Friday evening isn’t just known for its excellent cuisine; the Michelin-starred chef is also a trained opera singer and spoils his guests with music as well as food. And you also shouldn’t miss a visit to one of the many brewery pubs so you that can experience the openness and hospitality of Cologne‘s residents.

The Center for Internal Medicine specializes in prevention and diagnostics. The team of doctors includes cardiologists, gastroenterologists, hepatologists and lung specialists. In addition, there are specializations in hypertensiology (high blood pressure), lipidology (cholesterol and fat) and allergies. CheckUp medicine is as diverse as the individual people we care for: The modules of the check-up programs are selected according to the patient‘s requirements and underlying diseases. There are special programs for smokers (smokers check) and liver diseases (fatty liver, alcoholics) or allergy sufferers (asthma check). Gastroscopy and colonoscopy are offered daily and can be easily integrated into all packages. All packages can be offered on an outpatient basis (with accommodation in first-class hotels) or as an inpatient at the MediaPark Clinic (premium plus Check). In the case of sleep disorders or suspected sleep apnea (obstructive breathing disorder), one night is spent in the sleep laboratory.

Welcome to Germany’s first and largest center for endometriosis.

Germany´s largest endometriosis center is located in Cologne. Led by professor Thomas Römer, M.D., head of the department of OB/Gyn at the Academic Hospital Cologne Weyertal, it was certified in 2009 as one of Germany´s first centers for endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a chronic but benign women´s disease. Specialized doctors are needed for the diagnosis because the symptoms are atypical mostly: from chronic pain of the lower belly, very strong pain around the time of menstruation or ovulation, pain during sex, a dilated belly, and irregular bowel movement to pain during the passing of water, frequent urination pain during a bowel movement or bleeding by the bowels during the menstruation or the unattained desire to have children.

It may take time until the endometriosis is diagnosed. Estimate up to ten percent of women suffer from endometriosis. Yearly more than 40.000 women get a new diagnosis of the disease. The symptoms cut down the everyday life and the quality of life of the concerned patients severely.

Thanks to outstanding specialists in that field the multiple certified center for endometriosis became the largest center with about 2.200 patients and 1.200 minimally invasive surgeries yearly and has a great reputation – in Germany and worldwide.

We provide our patients with complete care. For a further contemporary evaluation, there are cooperation partners like radiologists, surgeons, internists and urologists as well as the Cologne center for the desire to have children.
