From its very foundation in 2007, the Heart Center of the University Hospital Cologne was a research center of international standing and one of the leading clinics in Germany providing state-of-the-art therapies. The Heart Center attaches great importance to minimally invasive procedures for as many operations as possible. In addition, innovative procedures are also carried out, such as stem cell transplants and organ preservation (lung, heart), together with circulatory research to protect the organ during heart surgery (brain, kidneys, heart).

In Cologne, you’ll find comprehensive cardiological expertise with a focus on congenital and acquired heart defects as well as chronic cardiological and pneumological diseases. It also has a well-known specialty department for infant and pediatric surgery. As part of this interdisciplinary strategy, Cologne has the most modern hybrid heart operating room in Europe. In addition, the Municipal Hospital‘s Center for Cardiology and Rhythmology has just opened the “Cardiology of the Future”. We all dream of a world without cancer. In Cologne, we join all our forces to get a little closer to this dream every day. Oncology is in a constant state of flux – new technologies, diagnostic procedures and treatment options are ever setting new standards in the treatment of almost all types of cancer. And with increasing digitalization, this process is getting faster every day.

In order to not only keep pace with this development, but also to decisively shape and drive it forward, no less than four university hospitals decided to pool their expertise in 2018. The university cancer centers in Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf formed the CIO – the Center for Integrated Oncology. Only one year later it became a Center of Excellence awarded by the German Cancer Aid. An international panel of experts has certified that the CIO has significantly advanced cancer medicine and provides patient care at the highest level. Many of CIO‘s experts are leaders in their respective fields and make important contributions to national guidelines for the treatment of various cancers. With its unparalleled combination of expertise, the CIO is capable of

treating all types of tumors and has a wide range of therapeutic approaches. Notably, such as metastasis surgery, immunotherapy with trifunctional antibodies, individual chemotherapy, stem cell therapy and regenerative therapy, enzyme therapy, cannabis therapy, and also complementary medicine. Question HC: Professor Dr. Römer, we are your guests at the centre for endometriosis at the Academic Hospital Weyertal in Cologne. Obviously a very large centre. Could you tell us a little about your facility and the medical services you offer?

Answer Prof. Dr. Römer: Yes, we really do have a large centre here in Cologne, namely the largest certified centre for endometriosis in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. You see, endometriosis is actually one of the most common diseases in women and is often associated with a high level of suffering, is

sometimes difficult to diagnose and can also significantly impair the ability to have children. A centre like ours is able to offer both the sometimes very complex diagnostics and to carry out optimal therapies, whether conservative or surgical. For complex cases, an interdisciplinary team of gynaecologists, surgeons, urologists and reproductive medicine specialists is available. Whether in the field of endometriosis or in the area of our highly specialised gynaecology, our aim is always to meet the highest standards.

Question HC: You just mentioned gynaecology. What exactly do you offer here in particular? And why do women from abroad come to you specifically?

Answer Prof. Dr. Römer: We are also a certified endoscopy centre. This means that we can perform almost all operations without abdominal incisions, which is of course a great advantage for patients. One of our specialities is organ-preserving surgery for myoma patients. Over the last 10 years, we have developed a very special procedure that allows fibroids to be treated using ultrasound, i.e. completely without incisions. Our aim is always to work as minimally invasively and as gently as possible. Another gynaecological focus is the diagnosis and treatment of uterine malformations. Here too, the patient is at the centre of our attention. Partly because of these two specialisations, we are pleased to have many patients who often come to us from abroad.

Question HC: You originally come from Thuringiathe medical landscape in Germany is very large, how did you finally end up in Cologne? And what makes the city special for you personally today?

Answer Prof. Dr. Römer: That‘s a long story, of course. To summarise: I studied medicine in Greifswald and then worked as a senior physician for a long time. When I was offered a professorship at Cologne University Hospital in 1999, I naturally didn‘t hesitateCologne is not only an excellent location for medicine, but also a beautiful and very lively city. And that‘s

exactly what characterises Cologne for me - the positive, cheerful attitude of the people here. You can experience this particularly well in Cologne‘s carnival, which I love to celebrate. And then there‘s my football club, 1. FC Köln - even if they lose a game, the fans in the stadium celebrate as if they‘ve just won the Champions League. I think that describes this city quite well.

Pioneers in Brachytherapy in Germany

This applies in particular to brachytherapy, a modern form of radiotherapy for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. Compared to conventional radical surgery, brachytherapy promises significantly fewer side effects and a lower impact on quality of life with equally good or even better cure rates. The WPC is also one of the pioneers in the use of modern laser techniques for the surgical treatment of benign prostate enlargement. Compared to conventional prostate excision, modern laser procedures such as holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP) and diode laser therapy are more effective, lead to fewer complications and reduce the likelihood of further surgery. Even men with very large prostate volumes can be treated endoscopically and do not need to undergo open surgery.

Germany´s largest endometriosis center is located in Cologne. Led by professor Thomas Römer, M.D., head of the department of OB/Gyn at the Academic Hospital Cologne Weyertal, it was certified in 2009 as one of Germany´s first centers for endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a chronic but benign women´s disease. Specialized doctors are needed for the diagnosis because the symptoms are atypical mostly: from chronic pain of the lower belly, very strong pain around the time of menstruation or ovulation, pain during sex, a dilated belly, and irregular bowel movement to pain during the passing of water, frequent urination pain during a bowel movement or bleeding by the bowels during the menstruation or the unattained desire to have children.

It may take time until the endometriosis is diagnosed. Estimate up to ten percent of women suffer from endometriosis. Yearly more than 40.000 women get a new diagnosis of the disease. The symptoms cut down the everyday life and the quality of life of the concerned patients severely.

Thanks to outstanding specialists in that field the multiple certified center for endometriosis became the largest center with about 2.200 patients and 1.200 minimally invasive surgeries yearly and has a great reputation – in Germany and worldwide.

We provide our patients with complete care. For a further contemporary evaluation, there are cooperation partners like radiologists, surgeons, internists and urologists as well as the Cologne center for the desire to have children.
