Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud The Wallraf shows how modern and relevant European art from the 13th to the beginning of the 20th century was and still is. NS-Dokumentationszentrum The NS-Dokumentationszentrum, founded in 1979 after a decision by the Cologne town council, is located in the EL-DE building where the Cologne Gestapo (secret police) had their headquarters between December 1935 and March 1945. The Gestapo prison with its 1800 wall inscriptions by prisoners has been a memorial site since 1981.

The permanent exhibition “Köln im Nationalsozialismus” takes a look at the entire spectrum of political and social life in Cologne during the Nazi period. The NS-Dokumentationszentrum is devoted to the research and commemoration of the city’s history at that time and to disseminating this information.

Museum Ludwig In the late 1960s, Irene and Peter Ludwig assembled the largest collection of pop art outside of the USA and donated a large part to the City of Cologne. This was the basis for founding Museum Ludwig in 1976. In addition to pop art, the Ludwigs gave the museum a comprehensive collection of works by the Opening times:
Russian avant-garde from 1906 to 1930 as well as several hundred works by Pablo Picasso on permanent loan. With more than 180 original pieces and 730 graphic works, Museum Ludwig meanwhile harbours the third-largest Picasso collection worldwide.

Museum Schnütgen Art of the Middle Ages. Situated in the city centre of Cologne, Museum Schnütgen invites visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of the Middle Ages. Its collection is exhibited in one of the oldest Romanesque churches in Cologne – St. Cäcilien – an ideal and atmospheric venue in which Opening times:
the medieval works of art are displayed in all their splendour. Alongside unique sculptures and precious works of treasury art the collection also boasts rare textiles and stained glass from eight centuries and introduces visitors to the multi-facetted world of the Middle Ages.

Praetorium Even today, the monumental foundations of the praetorium let you feel the might and self-confidence of the Romans direct on the Rhine. The praetorium was at first the headquarters for the commander-inchief of the legions and auxiliary troops of the Army for the Lower Rhine region. After the founding of the Province under the emperor Domitian, it served as the Opening times:
administrative centre and official residence of the imperial governor of Lower Germania. The visible masonry walls were once decorated with costly marble and painted panels and the rooms equipped with under-floor heating and high-quality furniture. Individual objects exhibited here, such as tableware and glasses bear witness to the luxurious lifestyle.

Römisch-Germanisches Museum
Built above the remains of the Roman town villa with the world-famous Dionysos mosaic, the Römisch-Germanisches Museum houses objects relating to the art, culture and everyday life of Roman and early medieval Cologne. Highlights are one of the world’s largest collections of Roman glass, including the three-coloured carved cage cup (c.AD 330/340), and the miniature portrait of Emperor Opening times:

The art of the migrating Germanic tribes and Eurasian nomads in the early Middle Ages is represented by a selection of precious jewellery, for both men and women – a portable form of wealth in the Migration Period. The Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum Cultures of the World, which was awarded the Museum Prize of the Council of Europe in 2012, provides a wide variety of insights into both new and old, exotic and familiar worlds. The Schokoladenmuseum is the gateway to the new and fashionable Rheinauhafen quarter and a conspicuous landmark on the banks of the Rhine. Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst Art from China, Japan and Korea . In 1909, the first European museum for East Asian art opened in Cologne. Its founders acquired outstanding works of Buddhist painting and wood sculpture, Japanese screen painting, coloured woodblock prints, and lacquer ware as well as Chinese and Korean ceramics for the collection during their Opening times:
