A royal spa

Piwniczna-Zdrój seems to be a small, old town which, in reality, is a royal town established under Magdeburg rights in 1348 by Casimir III the Great, by a trade route which led to Hungary. The initial name ‘Piwniczna –Neck’ was connected with the lie of the land and, to be more specific, the narrowing of the Poprad River Valley in that place. A busy trade route to Hungary and various royal privileges significantly influenced the prosperity of the place. At the turn of the 18th and 19th century, the town experienced significant economic and industrial growth. In this period mills, a paper mill, a saw mill, an

inn, an auger mill and fulling mills were built and craft started developing. The construction of a school was finished at the time too. The well situated on the market square, a historic treasure, is a relic of ‘kasta’ (a wooden chest with water) built in 1801. Another important step in the development of the town was creating a rail connection from Nowy Sącz to Muszyna in the years 1874 –1876. As a part of the modernisation process, in 1912 the town was illuminated with kerosene lamps – 8 lanterns, and the streets adjacent to the centre were paved.

A resort among mountain tops

Piwniczna-Zdrój is a small, mountainous resort, located over the Poprad River which naturally divides the town into a spa and a town area. The spa, free from any type of industry, is a part of the spa complex in the Beskid Sądecki thanks to numerous mineral water springs on this land. Apart from Piwniczna-Zdrój, the complex includes Krynica-Zdrój, Szczawnica, Muszyna, Żegiestów, Wierchomla, Łomnica or Tylicz. It is really hard to believe but mineral water springs in this area constitute 60% of all mineral waters in Poland. The mineral waters of Piwniczna-Zdrój will be of assistance in the treatment of the respiratory tract and the digestive system diseases.

Piwniczna borders on Szczawnica Commune from the west, Rytro Commune from the northwest, Głębokie and Kokuszka from the northeast and Łomnica-Zdrój from the east. The southern border of the commune is, at the same time, the country’s border with Slovakia. We could say that Piwniczna-Zdrój bends in between the mountains of the Beskid Sądecki – a part of its area is located on the slopes of the Radziejowa Range and the rest – in the Jaworzyna Range. That is why some mountains are within the town’s border e.g. Eliaszówka (1,023  m), Niemcowa (963 m), Granica (715 m) and Kicarz (703 m).

Sleeping under a chestnut…

In such a charming location, in the very centre of the town, you will find ‘Pensjonat pod Kasztanami’ (‘Under the Chestnut Trees Guest House’) which offers five rooms with ensuite bathrooms (2-, 3-, 4-person rooms) and an elegant and stylish apartment. The guest house

is an ideal place not only for a longer holiday but also for a flying visit at the weekend or a romantic stay. Its location in the heart of the town gives us plenty of possibilities as in the main square all hiking and cycling trails start. The guest house offers parking space free of charge.

7 REGIONAL TREATS

Richness of the landscape

Poprad Landscape Park is not only one of the oldest landscape parks in the Carpathians, but also one of the most beautiful and the richest in terms of the landscape. 70% of its area is covered with forests and the dominant species of the trees are the beech, the fir, the linden and the alder. Waters constitute 1.25% of the park and are an

undeniable treasure of this region – they are a cornerstone of various resorts including Piwniczna-Zdrój, Żegiestów-Zdrój, Muszyna and Krynica-Zdrój. If you choose the place for your holidays, you may both admire various natural attractions and visit nearby towns. Then, for sure, you will make the most of your time here.

Due to the fact that the land abounds in mineral water springs, first health visitors came to the place in 1884. However, only after 1932 (when the first boreholes were made and the baths i.e. a bathing facility and a mineral water pump room, were built) the spa started

Rafting adventure

Piwniczna-Zdrój is divided by a deep valley of the Poprad River. The river meanders at the foot of wooded mountains of the Beskid Sądecki. Amateurs of such views are welcome to try out rafting. By the river, you will find a small marina where rafting from Piwniczna-Zdrój to

functioning for real. Until today in Artistic Mineral Water Pump Room in Artystyczna Street, you can taste waters from Piwniczna such as ‘Juliana’, ‘Łomniczanka’, ‘Piwniczanka’, ‘Stefana’, ‘Wierchomlanka’ and ‘Zdrój’.

Rytro starts. After reaching the destination, it is impossible not to see a steep hill – the ruins of a mediaeval castle from the 13th century. It is worth climbing it as from the top a breathtaking view over the gorge of the Poprad River spreads.
