A spa with a vibe
Krynica-Zdrój is a popular resort in the south of Poland, on the border between the Beskid Sądecki and the Low Beskids. Although it was created several hundreds years ago as a village under the Vlach law by the Kryniczanka Stream, only thanks to its mineral waters it quickly developed into an attractive resort. Great artists and famous personalities visited it for many years. Krynica lies at the foot of Jaworzyna Krynicka (1,114m) and is surrounded by the Beskid forests. Park Mountain (742 m) towers over Deptak (a promenade). This location creates an exceptional climate and gives a lot of possibilities for
hiking and doing sports, either winter or summer ones. It constitutes a great starting point if you want to hit various panoramic hiking and cycling trails. You may also go for a walk along a path in the treetops or climb a panoramic platform. In the town itself, you can admire spa architecture including wooden villas, the modern Mineral Water Pump Room and interesting museums. This popular spot is a great tourist base as you will find accommodation of various standards and numerous restaurants there. The most interesting are the regional ones where you can get to know the taste of Krynica.
Regional cuisine
Sądecki Land is a cultural melting pot and Krynica itself lies on the border between the Beskid Sądecki and the Low Beskids. The land had been inhabited by Wallachian people for ages who later on started to be called Lemkos. Their simple and filling cuisine became the base of today’s regional flavours. Lemko people were shepherds and their dishes included a lot of sheep cheeses and mutton. Cultivating mountainous areas has always been harsh, that is why people used to grow vegetables which were easy to store such as potatoes, cabbage or swedes.
The cuisine uses healthy pickles, aromatic herbs and treasures of Beskid forests – raspberries, cowberries or mushrooms.
For many years the land was home to various nationalities and ethnic groups. Lemkos lived next door to the Polish, the German, the Jewish and even the Hungarian who had travelled with their wine and other goods along the trade route towards Cracow. In this way, an exceptional cuisine of Krynica was created.
