NEWS + NOTES

Meet Forum’s Mina Kim Over the past decade, Mina Kim has become one of KQED’s most familiar and beloved radio voices. A native of Canada, Mina grew up in St. John’s in Newfoundland. She started at KQED as an intern. When the station began expanding its local news coverage in 2010, she became a general assignment news reporter, then health reporter for The California Report before becoming Forum’s Friday host at the end of 2014. Over this past summer, she took over daily hosting duties of the statewide 10am hour of Forum, which now is carried by other public radio stations statewide. Mina and the Forum team are building the show to help create a space for Californians to have a daily conversation about current affairs and the state’s experience by centering on race, justice and equality. —Peter Cavagnaro

One of the themes for the second hour of Forum is to look at current events through the lens of race, justice and equality. How has your lived experience prepared you for the conversations? My producers and I are often surprised at how personally connected we are to our show topics. I’m the daughter of Korean immigrants and lost my dad to a heart attack at the age of 8. My teen years saw a lot of emotional and financial struggles. And, of course, the recent increase in the number of anti-Asian hate incidents has been no less painful for being expected. The format of the show is not the only major change to Forum. Shelter-in-place has required you to host from your home for the past year. How has that gone for you — both as host and as a mother? I haven’t had any “BBC Dad” moments yet though a few close calls! All three of my kids have been home with me and my spouse throughout the pandemic, so yeah, it’s been hectic. He likes to joke we’re running a radio station, law firm and childcare center out of our house. (continued on page 21)

KQ E D.O RG • A P R I L 2 0 2 1

With the recent format change to the second hour of Forum, you’re no longer speaking just to a Bay Area audience, but to Californians up and down the state. How has that changed the conversations for you? Having people from more regions of the state join our daily Forum conversation has made me feel more connected to the “nation of California” and made my world feel bigger at a time when the pandemic forced it to shrink.

RADIO SPECIAL SERIES

Living on the Edge: East Palo Alto’s Climate Threats and Solutions East Palo Alto is one of the places in California most vulnerable to sea-level rise in the bay, and one of those least able to fund protective measures for its residents. The small city sits along the bay at a location where the dynamics of bay currents point wave action right to its shoreline. Mapping by the Bay Conservation and Development Commission shows a swath of East Palo Alto neighborhoods inundated by 2050 from sealevel rise and storm surges. “We want this series to be useful to the residents of East Palo Alto so we will be asking questions about what issues they care most about and want to know more about from our reporters — whether it's about sea-level rise, climate change in general, solutions or other topics. We’ll also look at structural issues of environmental racism, which is often at the heart of why some communities are more vulnerable to climate impacts than others. And, of course, we’ll also ask who could be doing something about the problems,” says KQED Science Senior Editor Kat Snow. Some 30,000 people live there, including residents who fled other countries because of climate change and now face the same threat here.

Community advocates are organizing the majority Latino population, along with Blacks, Native Americans and whites. Meanwhile, the largely low-income community sits in the shadow of some of the world’s most powerful tech companies. KQED investigates East Palo Alto’s climate threats, solutions and lessons to learn for California's adaption to sea-level rise in a series on Morning Edition on KQED Public Radio on April 19–23, at 6:22am and 8:22am. You’ll find the stories online at kqed.org/climate.

One of the show’s specialties is intimate portraits, and this episode delivers. A KQED reporter shares a moving first-person account about living with a difficult roommate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

STARTER EPISODE

“The Case for Sweatpants” The United States started as an experiment, and that premise drives the storytelling in The Experiment by The Atlantic and WNYC Studios. Stories from an unfinished country take listeners in surprising directions — like in this episode about sweatpants. History, cultural commentary and fun sound design make The Experiment a worthwhile listen.

Masterpiece continues its 50th anniversary season with another stunning drama premiering this month. Atlantic Crossing is an epic drama based on the little-known true story of the relationship between Norwegian Crown Princess Martha and President Franklin Roosevelt during World War II. Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Sex and the City) stars as Roosevelt, opposite Swedish star Sofia Helin (The Bridge) as the courageous Martha, who flees the Nazis with her three young children and lives under Roosevelt’s protection. The eight-part series shows war from a woman’s point of view and ranges back and forth across the North Atlantic throughout World War II, depicting momentous events in the changing fortunes of Norway, Great Britain and the United States. I was hooked from the first episode, and Passport makes it easy to binge with all episodes available to stream starting on the night of the premiere (April 4). —Meredith Speight, KQED Director of Television Programming Photo courtesy of MASTERPIECE.

Atlantic Crossing, an Epic New Masterpiece Series, Launches As a KQED nerd for years before I joined the staff, I love that I can preview some upcoming shows early. Recently, I watched the first episode of the new Atlantic Crossing, an eight-episode Masterpiece series that premieres on April 4. As a fan of historical dramas, especially history I know little about, this one is completely gripping, gorgeous to look at and epic in the way Masterpiece shows tend to be.

APRIL PICK

All Creatures Great and Small on Masterpiece

Based on a true, rarely told story, Atlantic Crossing focuses on the relationship between the Norwegian Crown Princess Martha and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) during World War ll. The drama begins with neutral Norway’s reluctant entry into the war. As the story progresses, a relationship between the princess and President Roosevelt deepens, Photo courtesy of Julie Vrabelova. and issues of war, diplomacy, desire and jealousy unfold. There are strong performances, and the period clothing and sets are stunning. You can catch the Atlantic Crossing series starting on Sunday, April 4, at 9pm on KQED 9. If you want to see it all at once and you're a member at the Passport level, you’re in luck. Beginning April 4, the same night it’s broadcast, you can binge-stream the whole series via video-on-demand. —Ellyn Hament DID YOU KNOW?

• FDR made a secret trip to the Bay Area in 1942 to get a firsthand account of military production and citizen morale during WWll. Newspapers, including The San Francisco Chronicle, agreed to keep silent on the story for national security concerns.

Saturday, April 17, at 8pm on KQED 9 When a Tennessee educator teaches evolutionary science rather than theology, he’s brought to trial in this 1960 courtroom drama based on The Scopes “Monkey” trial. Full of impassioned speeches by Spencer Tracy and Fredric March, it also features Gene Kelly as journalist H.L. Mencken and Dick York as the defendant. Decades later, it still delivers a powerful punch. Photo courtesy of American Public Television.

• In 1944, FDR was elected to a fourth term. It’s unlikely a president will serve that long again; the 22nd Amendment, enacted in 1951, limits presidents to two terms.

Meet Forum’s Mina Kim (Continued from page 3) Have there been any silver linings? My kids are 10, 5 and 2 years old. This extra time with them has truly been a gift. They also made lockdowns a lot more entertaining. What are you most looking forward to when things return to normal? A big dinner with friends around our dining table. And a date night with my spouse. We literally haven’t had a date night for a year! Who has been the most memorable Forum guest for you so far? No disrespect to our guests, but the moments that tend to stay with me are more often from our listeners. They include Frank, who choked up talking about the special time he’s been able to have with his grandkids; 10-year old Maggie calling on behalf of her Spanish-speaking parents to find out if they could get COVID again; and Betty recalling a deeply wounding racist experience. Is there someone, or some topic, that you’re hoping to cover this year? The team and I want to cover how the pandemic has altered Californian’s lives and perspectives in lasting ways, especially those hit hardest by injustices and personal and economic losses. We want to be honest about the pain and the silver linings. If you were to ask me what story outside the pandemic I believe must not fade from view, it would be the impact of the systematic ripping apart of families at the Southern border. This is a story that shook me to my core, and my hope is that the coverage this year can be that all the families have been reunited and work is being done to truly address the trauma.
