KQED Takes Home Two Webby Awards

Sometimes called the Oscars of the internet, the Webby Awards are the leading international awards honoring excellence online with prizes. Winners for the following awards were chosen by a group of more than 2,000 judges through the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. KQED News won in the Apps, Mobile & Voice category for Best Writing for The Voicebot Chronicles. Hosted by Chloe Veltman and produced by Lowell Robinson, Bianca Taylor, Erika Kelly and Rob Speight, the first-ofits-kind series explores how to navigate a world where humans are becoming increasingly more reliant on voice technology. The story is responsive to users, who are given prompts and asked a host of questions as part of the story.

The KQED Arts digital video series If Cities Could Dance won a Webby in the Video category for Travel & Lifestyle. The If Cities Could Dance production team, which includes Kelly Whalen, Claudia Escobar, Charlotte Buchen Khadra and Masha Pershay, has collaborated with local filmmakers in Detroit; Minneapolis; Washington, D.C.; Memphis; New Orleans; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and other cities. This is the series’ second Webby Award in two years. The series' third season premiered on May 5, 2020. All episodes are available for free at kqed.org/arts and the KQED Arts YouTube channel. KQED also received a nomination in the Video category for Science & Education for its digital video series Deep Look. Presented in collaboration with PBS Digital Studies, Deep Look reveals the small and often hidden worlds in nature. The production team behind Deep Look includes host Laura Klivans, series producer Craig Rosa, lead producer and cinematographer Josh Cassidy, coordinating producer Gabriela Quirós and producers Jenny Oh and Mike Seely.

We’re proud to announce that KQED has won two 2020 Webby Awards. One is for The Voicebot Chronicles, an interactive storytelling series produced solely for smart speakers, and the other is for If Cities Could Dance, the digital video series that invites dancers nationwide to interpret and evoke the spirit and cultural legacies of their cities.

A View on the Virus: Burying the Dead in New York City Airs Wednesday, July 1, at 8pm New York City has been hit extremely hard by the coronavirus pandemic. In a series of audio diaries sent from his New York apartment, former director of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Tom Frieden provides his unique insight on the unfolding situation around the world and on the ground in the United States’ epicenter. We also hear from Clive Anderson, a funeral director. The volume of coronavirus cases has overwhelmed his small funeral home in New York. In “normal” times, he would average four funerals a week; now he’s doing six a day. These deeply personal audio diaries shed light on the human toll of the pandemic.

How Might Coronavirus Reshape Geopolitics? Intelligence Squared U.S. Airs Wednesday, July 8, at 8pm This month’s debate from Intelligence Squared looks at how the coronavirus will impact geopolitics on a global scale, particularly looking at China’s position as a global power. By providing material assistance to struggling nations, organizing world leaders, and publicizing its response to the coronavirus as aggressive and well managed, some predict China could gain influence and power after this crisis. Others argue the mismanagement and lack of transparency around the virus, as well as the economic slowdown and domestic unrest around lockdown policies, will spark lasting mistrust and condemnation. Tune in as debaters take up the issue.

PODCASTS

What are the best podcasts to listen to right now? We asked Olivia Allen-Price, host and editor of KQED’s Bay Curious, what she recommends. Here are her picks.

STARTER EPISODE

“Drew Banga’s Musical Notes on Fatherhood”

This podcast makes me love the Bay Area. Host Pendarvis Harshaw interviews some of the most fascinating people about the art they make and the work they do. You’ll meet a doula helping Black clients tired of being underserved by the medical establishment and a music producer who balances fatherhood with his art.

STARTER EPISODE

“Classic Cartoon Sound Effects!”

STARTER EPISODE

“Why I Steal”

The name of this podcast makes clear what it’s about — all the uncomfortable things we don’t normally talk about. One week is about the emotional cost of carrying student loans, and the next, why people choose not to have sex. Host Anna Sale lives in the East Bay, so you’ll occasionally catch some Bay Area flavor too.

Listen via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, the NPR One app, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.

KQ E D . O R G • J U LY 2 0 2 0

This show explores the stories behind interesting sounds, and it always opens up my mind to something I've never thought about before. This includes how there was once a purpose to the tones that play when you dial a phone and how cartoons created an entire language of sound not found in the natural world.

Staff Picks As we prepare for a summer full of unknowns, I’m planning a virtual vacation to the Greek island of Corfu with the colorful Durrell family. With KQED Passport, you can binge all four seasons of The Durrells in Corfu on Masterpiece. The series follows the adventures of the real-life Durrell family during the four years (1935-1939) they lived on Corfu. Struggling financially after her husband’s death, Mrs. Durrell makes the bold choice to sell the house and move her family from dreary England to Corfu, where the cost of living is much lower and the skies are much sunnier. With a family like hers, it is definitely an adventure, but a bright, charming and heartwarming one. That’s something I can look forward to now even if I can’t make the trip to Greece myself. —Meredith Speight, KQED Director of Television Programming Courtesy of Joss Barratt for Sid Gentle Films & MASTERPIECE

Meet the Radical Monarchs: Empowering Girls of Color

J U LY PICKS

“Self-empowerment and self-worth for young girls of color is critical. How do we create alternate spaces where that can happen?” To address this need, two women of color — Anayvette Martinez, who’s quoted here, and Marilyn Hollinquest — co-founded an organization in Oakland, California, called the Radical Monarchs, an alternate to the Scout movement for girls of color. Its mission and vision: “To create opportunities for young girls to form fierce sisterhood, celebrate their identities and contribute radically to their communities. And to empower young girls of color so that they stay rooted in their collective power, brilliance and leadership in order to make the world a more radical place.” We Are the Radical Monarchs, a new POV documentary, follows the first troop, a group of young girls between the ages of 8 and 13, for more than three years as they complete units on social justice and earn badges for achievements, including being LGBTQ+ allies, protecting the environment and working for disability justice. The documentary also focuses on the two founders, who face the challenge of growing the organization before and after the 2016 election. An Official Selection at the SXSW Festival, We Are the Radical Monarchs is a co-presentation of Latino Public Broadcasting. It airs on Monday, July 20, at 9pm on KQED 9. —Ellyn Hament

KQED’s New Member Information Policy KQED has updated its membership list policy, which outlines the use of our list while ensuring our active control in safeguarding against unauthorized use. While the policy hasn’t changed our practice of exchanging your name with other nonprofits, KQED’s participation in cooperative databases to identify best prospects for new members as well as reactivation of former members is new. By participating, you may receive fewer solicitations without jeopardizing critical revenue support for KQED programming. As always, we value your contribution and understand if you don’t want to participate in either of these programs. If you’d like to opt out of list exchange or cooperative database activity, please contact Member Services at 415-553-2150 or email member@kqed.org and we’ll update your account information to reflect your preferences.
