KQED Breaks Ground on New Headquarters Left to right: Board Chair Hank Barry, President Michael Isip, Mayor London Breed, President Emeritus John Boland, Campaign 21 Chair Anne Avis and EHDD Architect and Principal Rebecca Sharkey
Construction is officially underway on the renovation project for KQED’s San Francisco home. To celebrate this milestone, the station held a ceremony at the site with comments by KQED President Michael Isip, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Senator Scott Wiener and others. The presenters spoke about how the building project reflects an ambitious vision for the future of KQED and its civic role in the Bay Area community. And each speaker took ceremonial swings at KQED’s atrium wall. “We are doing more than creating a better and beautiful building,” said Isip. “What we are creating is a place of trust so that we can be more open and accessible to our community.”
NOVEMBER 2019
The project, designed by the award-winning firm EHDD, reinvents the Mission District building that KQED has occupied since 1992 to accommodate the station’s significant staff growth over the past decade and the expansive nature of the services the station provides audiences today. When the new KQED headquarters opens in 2021, visitors will be greeted by a glassy, dynamic façade reflective of KQED’s long-standing values of transparency, innovation, collaboration and community. A lifted corner entry, an expanded lobby and new programming and community spaces will create a vibrant and welcoming place to convene and engage with the journalists, station, content and programs.

The Splendid Table’s Turkey Confidential
Destination Health: Solving Homelessness
Airs Thursday, November 28, from 9-11am, on KQED 88.5 FM If you’ve ever made a holiday meal, you probably know the stress involved in planning, cooking and troubleshooting — especially if turkey is on the menu. The pressure to present that perfectly moist, fall-off-the-bone goodness is intense, and many of us only practice once or twice a year. This Thanksgiving, KQED has you covered with Turkey Confidential from American Public Media’s The Splendid Table. Francis Lam hosts this live two-hour special, fielding your calls and coming to the rescue of Thanksgiving cooks, kitchen helpers and dinner guests on one of the biggest cooking days of the year. Tune in with questions, to learn some cooking tips and tricks, or simply to enjoy the festive and fun spirit of the holidays and the joy of cooking.
Airs Thursday, November 7, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM A safe, stable home is necessary to survive, let alone thrive. Yet much of the United States is grappling with some of the highest costs of housing and highest rates of homelessness in decades. What can we do to reverse the trend and address this critical issue? Tune in for this panel discussion from the Commonwealth Club featuring four West Coast mayors including London Breed (San Francisco) and Libby Schaaf (Oakland), the lieutenant governor of Hawaii, and the co-lead of California’s commission on homelessness and supportive housing, who will discuss this public health crisis and efforts to solve it.

NOVEMBER PICKS
It’s hard to find anyone in America who hasn’t heard of Sesame Street or Elmo, Cookie Monster, Big Bird, and the other eclectic, colorful and loveable Muppets on the show. Charming, fun and full of valuable lessons that entertain and educate, Sesame Street has been hugely influential on children — and their families — since it first aired on November 10, 1969, against the backdrop of the war on poverty and the Civil Rights Movement. Sesame Street was created to test the power of television technology in early childhood education and to see if TV could help prepare less-advantaged children for school. Researchers, educational advisors, well-known entertainers and visionaries were brought in to create what has now become the longest-running children’s show in American television history. Today, its influence is huge: Sesame Street has helped children worldwide — including those with AIDS and Down syndrome — to learn and feel included, and it teaches all children to be respectful of others. With a curriculum that constantly evolves to meet the needs of different generations, Sesame Street is now a force for good in more than 150 countries and 70 languages. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the season will focus on the power of possibilities, empowering kids to take safe risks and learn from their mistakes. And on Sunday, November 17, at 7pm on KQED 9 (November 19, at 6pm on KQED Plus), Sesame Street will present a star-studded prime-time special. The details were still under wraps when we went to press, but you can count on it being a fabulous and fun look at this beloved, groundbreaking show.

DID YOU KNOW? • In 1975, Sesame Street became the first kids’ program to show a child with Down syndrome. Since then, there have been Muppets with AIDS and autism and a homeless Muppet. • Sesame Street was originally supposed to be called 1-2-3 Avenue B, but the name was changed at the last minute. • Because the show cast Black and Latinx actors, it was banned, early on, in several American states, including Mississippi.

Controversial when it was first released, it went on to be nominated for 11 academy awards, and it launched Stewart’s career. Photo courtesy of American Public Media
College Behind Bars Monday and Tuesday, November 25 and 26, at 9pm on KQED 9 Explore the transformative power of education through the experiences of incarcerated men and women studying to earn college degrees — and a chance at new beginnings — from one of the country’s most rigorous prison education programs. It’s directed by Lynn Novick, best known for her work with Ken Burns.
Circus: American Experience
Thursday, November 28, at 7pm on KQED Plus Circus follows the rise and fall of the gigantic, traveling tented railroad circus and brings to life an era when Circus Day would shut down a town. America’s first circus and the arrival of P. T. Barnum and the Ringling brothers are highlighted.
