Witness: Black History Month Airs Wednesday, February 6, at 8pm on KQED 88.5FM Black History Month on KQED 88.5FM begins with incredible, first-person interviews and archival audio about the African American experience. Listen as activist Gloria Richardson revisits an iconic photograph from the civil rights campaign and Doug Williams, the first African American quarterback to play in the Super Bowl, describes the struggle for fair pay. And U.S. Rep Barbara Lee, D-Calif., reflects on the moral stand she took in 2001 against the open-ended War on Terror. Tune in for this special hour of Witness from the BBC, bringing you back in time and presenting stories that are inspiring, harrowing and richly told. —Chloe Morizono

Rediscovering Apprenticeships Airs Wednesday, February 20, at 8pm on KQED 88.5FM The “college for all” push has left many students with piles of debt and no obvious career path. Meanwhile, apprenticeships are booming in popularity, and the number of apprentices in the United States is expected to grow exponentially by 2020. Supporters say the “earn while you learn” approach can help create a more skilled workforce and provide a path to solid, middle-class careers. The APM Reports documentary Old Idea, New Economy: Rediscovering Apprenticeships explores how apprenticeships can expand to include careers beyond the traditional trades and reach new populations searching for a foothold in the middle class. —Chloe Morizono

PODCASTS

The best podcasts to listen to right now, recommended by Carly Severn, co-host of The Cooler, KQED’s pop culture podcast. Don’t know what a podcast is? Not sure how to listen to one? Reach out to Julie Caine, jcaine@kqed.org.

STARTER EPISODE

“Jonathan Van Ness of ‘Queer Eye’ on Turning Red States Pink” Feel like the dizzying pace of pop culture is leaving you behind? This podcast — which I host along with Emmanuel Hapsis and Jamedra Brown Fleischman — is designed to help you stay up-to-date, taking on music, movies and whatever The Internet is talking about this week.

STARTER EPISODE

Film criticism can be an elitist affair, which is why I like this pretention-free podcast from Bill Simmons’ The Ringer network. Don’t be fooled by the congenial atmosphere: these folks seriously know their stuff, as their deep dive into David Fincher’s Bay Area masterpiece Zodiac proves.

STARTER EPISODE

“Ferry Bad Start to the Year”

This satirical news podcast was where John Oliver (that one!) cut his teeth before The Daily Show. Now, remaining host Andy Saltzman is joined by international comedians, including Alice Fraser (Australia), Hari Kondabolu (U.S.) and Nish Kumar (U.K.) to autopsy the week’s news.

Listen via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, the NPR One app or wherever you get your podcasts.

Sammy Davis Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me

Sammy Davis Jr. had the kind of career that was indisputably legendary, so multi-faceted and vast that it was dizzying in its scope and scale. Yet, his life was complex, complicated and contradictory. Sammy Davis Jr.: I've Gotta Be Me explores Davis’ journey to create his own identity — that of a black man who embraced Judaism — through the shifting tides of civil rights and racial progress. A veteran of increasingly outdated show business traditions, he found himself bracketed by the bigotry of white America and the distaste of black America.

Airs Friday, February 22, at 9pm on KQED 9 Explore the complicated history of the American South and its music through the life of country music star Charley Pride. His journey shows the ways that artistic expression can triumph over prejudice and injustice.

Premieres Tuesday, February 19, at 9pm on KQED 9

SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE ON KQED 9

Eyewitness Airs Saturday, February 2, at 8pm and 9:50pm on KQED 9 Sigourney Weaver and William Hurt star in this 1981 thriller about a maintenance man obsessed with a TV newswoman.

Find KQED’s schedule of Black History Month programming at kqed.org/heritage.

Sealab

Airs Tuesday, February 5, at 9pm on KQED 9 In February 1969, off the shore of Northern California, a U.S. Navy crane carefully lowered a pressurized underwater habitat, complete with science labs and living quarters, into the Pacific Ocean. This documentary tells the little-known story of the Sealab program, which tested the limits of human endurance and revolutionized the way we explore the ocean.
