NEWS + NOTES
Welcome to the New On KQED Devoted readers, please allow me to introduce you to the new On KQED (formerly On Q). We’ve spent the last eight months talking to you, asking how you use the magazine and learning how we could enhance your experience. Quite simply, you wanted a better guide to KQED’s TV offerings and that’s what you’ll find in this new version of the magazine – including five additional pages of TV Listings and much more! Every change is a direct result of our conversations with you, and we look forward to your continued feedback as we further refine the magazine over the next few months. This member guide has seen a lot of changes since it debuted in 1955 as Focus Magazine, and we’re honored to be a part of shaping its future. Thank you for bringing us into your homes all these years!

Happy(ish) Holidays Airs Thursday, December 20, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM
You know how every day someone asks, “How are you?” And even if you’re totally dying inside, you just say “Fine,” so everyone can go about their day? Terrible, Thanks for Asking is the opposite of that. For its second annual holiday special, the program's host Nora McInerny will bedazzle this oftendifficult time of year with humor, stories and the very real realness of reality. McInerny will be joined by the memoirist Augusten Burroughs (Running with Scissors) for a conversation about holiday missteps. Plus more special guests and listeners will share stories about their worst holidays ever.
In the Dark: The Trial of Curtis Flowers Airs Wednesday, December 12, at 8pm on KQED 88.5 FM

Curtis Flowers, a black man, has been tried six times for the same crime — a quadruple murder in a small Mississippi town. The white prosecutor was determined to have him executed. Witnesses against him testified falsely. Expert testimony relied on junk science. And the prosecutor systematically struck black potential jurors from the jury pool, ensuring that Flowers was always tried by juries that were mostly or entirely white. APM Reports’ investigative series In the Dark spent a year in Mississippi to uncover this story of power and race that continues to unfold – next in the U.S. Supreme Court.

NOVA: Apollo’s Daring Mission
NOVA tells the in-depth story of the Apollo program’s riskiest mission: a 16-week race to beat the Soviets and send three men in a tiny space capsule to, around and back from the moon – before 1968 came to a close. To mark the 50th anniversary of this historic mission, Apollo 8’s astronauts, Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders, reconvene and tell the story through a fascinating and untapped prism: the incredible science, extraordinary engineering feats and huge technological advances that enabled them to go where no one had ever gone before.

Places in the Heart 6
Airs Saturday, December 22, at 8pm and 10pm on KQED 9 This 1984 tearjerker stars Sally Field as a widowed mother fighting to keep her cotton farm in Depression-era Texas.
Airs Saturday, December 29, at 9:35pm on KQED 9 You know the Castro, but do you know its story? The mecca for our rainbow community was a quiet, working-class European immigrant neighborhood only a few decades ago. Discover how the neighborhood transformed, as told by the people who lived it — young and old, straight and gay — in this 1997 KQED-produced, Peabody Award-winning documentary.
