My stint as Editor of the Mooi will probably be known as the shortest one! I took over from Mrs de Vos who took the lead for many years and she truly deserved the break! I honestly do not know how she did this on her own. If it wasn’t for Ms van Wyk and Mrs de Swardt, I wouldn’t have coped. RESPECT, Tanya. My time at PBHS is more of a short story than a novel it seems. It is, however, my story and it is filled with all the elements: protagonists (the staff), antagonists (the learners), drama, tension, suspense, horror, humour and other detail that would put Johnathan van de Ruit’s “Spud” and his Crazy Eight to shame. Thank you for the role you played in my story for these two years. And a special thanks to The Mooi contributors - it was fun! A new broom sweeps in new comers - hopefully you can see through the dust we kicked up! Adios! Sala sentle.
JP van Vuuren
headmaster
Without change, growth is not possible and 2014 had its fair share of both. It is therefore with a sense of both pride and sadness that I look back on this year. Pride in all that we, the people of College, have accomplished, but also sadness to see my first intake of Grade 8 students matriculate. I remember well the wide-eyed little boys who arrived here on their first day, back in 2010 – now just look at them! What a group of fine young men they have grown to be. This year we have welcomed new colleagues and students and said farewell to some; we have mourned the deaths of loved ones and celebrated the births of others – and through it all we have kept moving forward towards a successful future. The Mooi, too, has changed and grown and has put on brand new clothes in 2014. As you turn these pages, you will read, look, reminisce, laugh.... and enjoy!
Thank You All
contributors
To Ms van Wyk for creating those brilliant questionnaires, gathering information from all corners of PBHS, typing and all the hours of planning and re-planning. You Rock! Mrs de Swardt for difficult decisions regarding money, printing, editing, admin, tricky calls and always advocating THE CAUSE. Mrs Broodryk for awesome photographs the whole year through. Kreativmedia Hub for brilliant ideas, creative layout, excellent assistance as well as laughter, fizzers and the best coffee in town! Prestige and Kodak for formal photographs. The artists: Thank you for sharing. Beyonce and Rihanna for their fabulous guest appearance at our humble publication. DJ Fresh for sneaking in at the last minute.

Staff selfies Mr van Vuuren (Headmaster) The person who inspired me the most throughout my life, is the teacher who taught me North-Sotho in High School, Mrs Herbst. If I could choose to be any animal for a day or two, I would like to be an elephant. I would just love to trample on some of these misbehaving miscreants! If I could choose to teach any other subject, I would choose teaching Maths to juniors. I would like to retire in the Cape, at the coast and spend my days walking, running, reading and renovating furniture. @Mogotsi Gr12 2014
My favourite teacher at PBHS is @MrVanVuuren for his dry jokes.
Mr Swanepoel “The Undertaker” (Vice principal) Famous saying, “Fantastic”.
@Mothibedi Gr12 2014
The teacher I liked best during my time at PBHS is @MrSwanepoel because he is the master manipulator and gives selective disinformation.
@Bhatti Gr8 2014
My favourite teacher is @MrSwanepoel because you can ask him about anything and he will explain it to you, also, he is always fair.
Mrs Broodryk “The Blou” I deal with the stress here by braaiing every Wednesday night and eating pizza Sunday evenings. Famous saying, “Let’s call it a day”.
6
Staff selfies Mrs de Bruyn Famous saying, “People”. I helped raise eight kids - not all mine! So nothing you boys do surprise me. No, sometimes you do surprise me!
Mrs de Swardt “Big Mama” My advice to others who experience stress: Stress? What’s that? A book or movie, written about my life, would be titled “Victory! The story of one woman’s amazing ability to not break stuff”. @Tlatsana Gr 12 2014
The teacher I liked best during my time at PBHS is @MrsdeSwardt because she showed us how people can be trusted by their commitment and hard work. @Majola Gr 8 2014

Staff selfies Mr Grimbeek I love my dream team. My retirement plan is to emigrate to Antarctica as I love white landscapes. My favourite rugby team is the WP and they inspire me.
Mr Hattingh “Mdzepo” Famous saying is “Come get education”. I wouldn’t want to teach any other subject. I would rather retire than teach any other subject. At this stage, no-one inspires me. My retirement plan is simple: revenge! I am going to visit my kids’ houses where I am going to jump on their couches, leave all the lights on and eat everything in the fridge. @Raubach Gr 12 2014
The teacher I liked best during my time at PBHS is @MrHattingh because he is so strict and for his commitment.
Mr Havenga “Big Large” My favourite quote would be,“Go big or go home.” I don’t think that quote would work for Weigh-Less! If I could teach any other subject, I would choose Civil Technology. The teacher I liked best during my time at PBHS is @MrJohnson for teaching me to respect others.
Mrs Jooste Famous saying is, “Foefenjol”. My favourite class is 10D. My advice to other teachers who experience stress is to take a smoke break between periods. If I could have an alias it would be The Yellow Witch.
10
Staff selfies Mr Kemp “Kempido” Famous saying is, “Ek sukkel met jou.” I would like to retire in Italy one day and my dream job would be to be an Oil Magnate. I think my alias would be “Superman”. If I could teach another subject, it would definitely be Biology. My parents inspire me.

My favourite class is 13D, because the boys only believe me when they leave! @Ramashobane Gr 12 2014
The teacher I liked best during my time at PBHS is @MrSchmidt because he is a man of his word and never listens to a boy with a chappie blazer.
13

It has truly been a very successful year for Barnard, filled with much fun and many memorable occasions. It has been a busy year that has united us in friendship and in a sense of brotherhood. This year we have noticed a more dignified and higher sense of Barnard Pride, which has resulted in us becoming a much more involved and competitive House than ever before.
All this would not have been possible had it not been for the consistent, dedicated and hardworking efforts made by my fellow Barnardian prefects as well as the matrics of 2014. This has definitely not gone unnoticed. Together we made a success of Barnard House.
Our utmost gratitude is extended to @MrsDeVos who has played a key role in Barnard, and who will hopefully continue to do so for years to come. We are extremely fortunate to have her. My fellow Barnardians, I would like to thank you for making this an amazing year. I wish you all of the best for the rest of your years in Barnard. May all your dreams become reality!

Buxton House Milton House
This has been a rollercoaster year for Granton. We’ve had our downfalls, but always got back on top again!
Despite the fierce competition we’ve had this year from Barnard and Milton (ONLY) we, at Granton, have created an infinite bond with each other as Grantonites, sticking together through thick and thin. For that I am eternally grateful. T. Maropefela
To my brothers at Granton, may you flourish throughout your years at College and always try to see tomorrow, today – Carpe Diem, lads!

The first College year of the Matrics of 2014 passed by at great speed due to the 2010 Soccer World Cup. During that first year we learned so much about the school, all its activities and competitions that are so important to us Collegians.

As the years went by I got to be respected and admired by many, especially in my Milton family, and as a result they voted me as Head Boy. Such an honour for me! This massive task was not a walk in the park, as it came with many duties and responsibilities, but what a huge blessing this has been! Milton House has been my third home for five beautiful years and I am truly thankful for being in this, and not any other House. I want to thank my senior housemaster, matron, fellow prefects and last but not least, the whole Milton Empire, for their great support.
These have been my best five years yet and I say this with Milton pride.
The repercussions of patience are good deeds. Faith is like a race, you run until the end. You never stop believing until God stops believing in you (which will never happen) – clichés, only because they are true!

COMMENTS:
46
Mmasa It’s been a beautiful experience at College, for the past five years I have matured and grown mentally as an individual and what better way to sum it up than with an awesome, classy matric dance. It was indeed a splendid night filled with dancing and the highest form of euphoria, leading up to the event. In all honesty my heart was pounding. Only one word is befitting for my emotions leading up to the event: “Pandemonium”. However, after it was all said and done, I look back on how beautiful and captivating it all was. Gratitude I extend to my form mates for making it an awesome and prestigious night and a further vote of thanks goes out to all teachers and staff members involved in the organizing of the event.

COMMENTS: Mokubyane Slim fit tuxedos, expensive colognes and extravagant watches were the order of the night at the Black Tie event. Boys became men (that was mainly because of the stunning women that accompanied them). I feel that every boy deserved not only an Oscar that night, but also a GQ award to go with it. 03 October 2014 was the best night ever for the Class of 2014!

Eish! Memories involving Schmiddy you say... From confiscating my smokes, to going on golf tour to Natal, roasting squash balls, to getting credit lashes in the morning, for playing We are The Champions on his monster HiFi from his flat next to Granton. The list is long... Go well, Deon.
Ray Boardman Was an honour and a pleasure working with you (PA and SGB and occasional social) while my boys were there from ‘97 to 2007. You are a legend - A “no-nonsense” man and yet fondly remembered and hugely respected by the boys you taught, coached and “house-mastered”. Thank you for the major contribution in upholding the discipline, tradition and respect that we still see at College today. You WILL leave a void. I sincerely hope we will see you at some Old Boy functions in the future. Best of luck with your future.

Going the extra mile 24 Years Later Dear College After spending most of my adult life involved with College, I have decided to relocate to Randburg. For those of you who don’t know, I was a student teacher at College in 1987 in the very same classroom that I am still teaching in today. I was appointed to start at College in 1990 but an arrangement between schools resulted in me being loaned to Hags for one year. I assumed duties at College in January 1991 when I moved into classroom 36. The rest is history. College became a large part of who I am today. I saw Headmasters come and go. Teachers, admin staff, ground staff, hostel staff and learners came and went. Each one leaving an indelible imprint on my being. Many people would think it crazy to stay in one place for so long. That is my kind of crazy and I don’t regret a moment.
What am I taking with me? Lifelong impressions of respect, tradition, loyalty, honour, courtesy, team work, happiness and positivity. Thank you College for giving me these and other gifts.
What am I leaving behind? I hope for a while some of you may smile when you think of the times we spent together. When you leave a place there is not a vacancy or gap. It is like taking your foot out of the water. No hole or dent. It is now time for me to embark on a new adventure. Time to ride on. I wish you all the happiness, good fortune and blessings for the future. Thank you for being part of my life for 24 years. Deon Schmidt

COMMENTS:
Makhubela Chess is your mistress and it motivates you. You develop character through adversity and failure. Playing chess helped me to see the invisible, to believe the unbelievable and to overcome my competition. Gabarone is the player who performed the best during this season, while Tafira showed the most improvement throughout the season.
@Makhubela: Gratitude, like faith, is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it grows #chess

Mongane We were privileged to have been able to hold a friendly debate against HoĂŤrskool Ferdinand Postma. This was quite nerve-wrecking as we had many first-time debaters this year. The juniors made strong and valid points and won their debate. Although the senior team lost, we learnt a number of valuable lessons. We all would like to thank @MsVanWyk for her support and guidance.

RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) CAMP
Two Inaugurations
The RYLA camp was an interesting and fun experience. We were a large group consisting of 72 young students. There were young people from the Free State, North-West and luckily for us we also had two international students, from the USA and Brazil.
Litter Parades Volunteering in Ikageng Dragon Boat Race
The camp’s supervisors were friendly and encouraging. They taught us about leadership skills and characteristics like courage. We were then divided into smaller groups of between 6-8 learners. We did activities that encouraged group work and forced us to display our leadership skills. We had to complete certain tasks and rotated leaders. We learned a lot about ourselves in the four days. By the end of the camp we had learnt new values, made new friends and old bonds were made stronger. We would like to thank Rotary Mooi for sponsoring us.

Athletics Athletics
written by Molekane
The athletics season started in January when all the boys had to participate in trials to take part in the annual athletics competition between the different sports houses, known as the inter-house athletics. After certain boys from different sports houses were chosen to represent their sports houses, a successful event full of joy and sadness was hosted by the teachers with the help of some learners. In the juniors section Maimane of Barnard House was awarded Best Junior Athlete and Junior Victor Ludorum and in the seniors section, Molekane of Milton House was awarded Best Senior Athlete and Senior Victor Ludorum. At this event the PBHS team was selected to represent the school at the competitions that were to follow.
The first meeting we had was at Springs Boys. The following meeting was in Pretoria where the top 30 athletes from each province got to compete against the top athletes from the best schools in South Africa. With great commitment the boys could not stop breaking records – the likes of Dlodlo, Maimane and Molekane.
The next meeting we had was in Carltonville where most of our athletes received medals and some trophies.

The highlight of the season was the first game, against Potchefstroom Tegnies. They were known as the 2013 champions but we bowled them all out for 63 and we won the match. @MrAlecConradie and our lovely coach @MsLuchies worked hard to get us where we are. Lekaba (Captain 2nd team )
The highlight was the first game against HTS Potch. Motebo got four wickets and Legoete literally won the game for us. We managed an improbable victory. We know our coach as “Ruddy.” He taught us techniques to perform better. The best player in our team is Moekoena and the most improved player is Mogomotsi.

The absolute highlight of the season was our game against Dale College during Founders 2014 in Durban. We fought as a team. We played our hearts out and we never gave up. It made us a stronger team. The best player during the season was Molemela. Our coach, Ian Stirk, is hard-working, respectful and honest. He was great. Mogomotsana (Captain: Opens B Team) The highlight of the season was the match against Schoonspruit. We were late and didn’t get time to warm up and then we beat them 1-0. Our coach, Lisa, is motivating, chilled and funny. Hockey has taught me to be disciplined and to work in a team. I prefer hockey to rugby because you don’t have guys invading your private space. Mgengo (Captain u/16A)
The highlight of the season was our game against St Davids when Thoby asked Kriek if he had something to say and Kriek went crazy. I think Modise is the player that improved the most and I think Thobedi is the best player of the season.

Golf COMMENTS: Mokotjomela The person who motivated me to start golfing is Thato Maichotlo. I practice Monday to Thursday at the Country Club. I practice putting and chipping for more than an hour. The biggest challenge for me is to organise my transport to the club and back. It would be great if other learners could join me. They just need to buy a proper set of golf clubs before they join!

The winning House of this trophy is determined by taking every branch of the school’s activities (both scholastic and sporting) into account.

Old Boys Note Wally Hopton Wall of Valediction
1984 COMMENTS:
It used to be that new boys came to this School because they already had an affection and respect for it, and the maintenance of our traditions was, as a result, automatic.
Now, however, hostel applications are handled by the department and many new boys allocated here next year may think of College as “just another high school”. This means that you, the older boys at the school next year, must consciously perform the task of maintaining the traditional spirit of our school, because new boys are going to take their cue from what they see you do, and from what you say. To create in others this kind of pride you must have pride yourself; not the haughty pride of thinking yourself superior because you have been blessed with special talents, nor the false pride of thinking yourself superior because you have been cast in privileged company; but the quiet pride of knowing that you are trying to be a worthy member of the School.

30 Year Reunion
Wally Hopton (Oldboys) Why we are known as “College boys” Charles Douglas Hope, M.A. (Oxon), was one of the earliest links with the educational reconstruction of the Transvaal after the Anglo-Boer War, and especially of Potchefstroom, where he opened the “Potchefstroom College” later known as the High School For Boys. Mr Hope died at the age of 80 years on 16 January 1947.
