Festival of Christmas trees brings joy ¢¢ LYNDLE HAAGNER

L

ast Friday saw the opening of the popular Festival of Trees at the Potchefstroom Museum. Local businesses, restaurants and organisations were invited to design, build and adorn their own Christmas trees in a creative and original manner. The festival is hosted by The Rotary Club of Potchefstroom Mooi in conjunction with the Potchefstroom Museum with the aim to raise funds for charity.

The public is invited to come and witness the festive splendour of more than 60 inventive trees on display at the Museum. Visitors can vote for their favourite tree in exchange for a can of food, which will go towards charity. There are three categories: Trees smaller than 1.5m, trees bigger than 1.5m and Christmas Wreaths. The winners of these categories will then have the opportunity to nominate charities to which the collected food will be donated. “Last year there were 47 trees exhibited and over 3000 cans donated to six charities. Since the opening of this year’s exhibition, we have already had over 400 visitors and have collected more than 300 cans. We expect many more visitors and hope to surpass the number of cans we collected last year,” says Elmarie Weyers, the curator of the Potchefstroom Museum.

This festive exhibition will run until Sunday

6 December and will be open from 09:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 12:30 on Saturdays. Unfortunately due to the power cuts that will be taking place on Sunday 29 November, the exhibition will be closed but will be open on Sunday 6 December – the final day of the exhibition. Snacks and drinks will be sold in the evening where visitors can sit back and enjoy the festivities.

Good men honoured

There were three award categories and the first, The Best Father Award, went to Dr. Fazel Freeks. “It is only awarded to one man who we feel has taken ownership of fatherhood, not only to his own family but also to other children in the community. The Men of Honour Award went to three individuals who played a big role in uplifting the community: Prof. Deon De Klerk, Mr. Hendrik Heathcote and Prof. Cilas Wilders.

Last were The Act of Love Awards, which were presented to five recipients, men and woman, who displayed selfless acts of love and kindness towards others. The awards went to Prof. Annette Combrink, Mr. Oupa Mothibedi, Ms. Louisa Ralepelle, Mr. Gage Heathcote and Mrs. Mirriam Phiri. The evening was well attended by over 120 guests.

Banna Ba Kae Tlokwe Men’s Forum celebrated International Men’s Day by hosting their annual prize-giving event on 19 November at the Roots Lifestyle Centre. Guests sat down to a three-course meal and were entertained by traditional dancing, gospel singing and guest speaker Kobus Olivier.

Saki Tloteng, Chairman of Banna Ba Kae, expressed the importance of International Men’s Day and recognising the men that make a difference in the lives of others and in their community.

As an organisation, Banna Ba Kae’s main objective is to combat gender-based violence.

“As men, we play a very crucial role in the world and it is important to encourage and motivate men to keep doing their part,” says Saki.

Duties: •Support the provision of PHC services in the District, as per prescribed rotations •Provide patient care in the district training complex, including clinics and hospitals, as per prescribed rotations, inter alia through the management of problem cases, support of junior doctors, supervision of students and trainees, and provision of emergency medical care •Complete the rotations required within the Regional Hospital and District, as prescribed by the family medicine training programme and the Director of Registrar Training/principal family physician •Be actively involved in all aspects of the Family Medicine Department’s academic, teaching and clinical programmes •Participate fully in the following training activities: Registrar meetings, family medicine training in the District and Hospital, and CPD programme •Complete the clinical and academic requirements for registration as a family physician, including obtaining the MMed degree •Support the development of quality assurance/improvement •Conduct research in primary care.

osts Jomo Cosmos clipped Chippa United 4-3 in an action-packed Premier Soccer League match played at Potchefstroom’s Olen Park Staduim on Sunday.

Cosmos made their intentions known from the first whistle when The Zim Dollar, Charlton Mashumba, registered Ezenkosi’s first goal in the 20th minute. Within 10 minutes Brice Aka joined the goal-rush and added the hosts’ second goal. As if stung by Ezenkosi’s goal- scoring appetite, Chippa’s shaky defence allowed Penjie Zulu to score the third. Chippa United replaced Andile Mbenyane for Rhutani Manzini, who made an immidiate inpact and netted for United in the 35th minute and reduced the tally to 3-1. The turn of events agitated coach Jomo Sono to send strong messages to his players and reacting to instructions, playmaker Sipho Mngomezulu blasted a thunderbolt in the 50th minute to register a 4-1 lead for Ezenkosi.

Chippa United caused havoc in the second round and exposed Cosmos defence. Keeper Sherwin Naicker allowed Aristide Bance to reduce the score sheet to 4-2. Naicker was again beaten by United’s William Twala in the 88th minute to bring the final score to 4-3.
