Rotary makes waves at Dragon Boat Festival ¢¢ LYNDLE HAAGNER
T
his past Saturday saw the long-awaited, much anticipated 3rd annual Dragon Boat Festival making waves, literally, with sixteen teams battling it out in the hot, windy conditions, fiercely competing to claim the winning title. The event was hosted by The Rotary Club of Potchefstroom Mooi with the main objective being to promote awareness of cancer and to raise funds in support of credible charities. The competing teams received much support from the crowd, who enjoyed a fun-filled atmosphere while watching the races. Thankfully the weather played along and the rain only fell once the event was over. Amongst the festive crowd was The President of the South Africa Dragon Boat Association (SADBA), Vincent Lin, and the deputy representative of the Taipei Embassy in South Africa, Shih Cheng-Maw, who assisted with the official prizegiving ceremony. Each team competed in a series of knock-out races and the final race saw the teams from Remax and The School of Artillery going headto-head in a race for ultimate victory. Both teams were incredibly strong competitors, but in the end the winning title was claimed by The School of Artillery, who also took home the Team Spirit Cup. Remax came in a close second, followed by BKD Auditors. The winning team was awarded gold medals, the winning trophy and prize money amounting to R10 000. The prize money comprised the team’s R5 000 entry fee, which was matched by the mayor of Potchefstroom, the Honourable Kgotso Khumalo. The winners could then select a charity from a list of credible candidates, identified by The Mooi Rotary,
to donate the prize money to. They decided on The North West Mental Health, a NPO organisation which renders various services to the community, including mental health therapy, counselling, child protection services and support, stress management, trauma counselling, training and social work. Discovery, the official sponsor of the 2015 Dragon Boat Festival, also awarded numerous prizes to the winning team and hosted a lucky draw for a Discovery hamper. Potchefstroom Mooi Rotary told NWI that they wish to extend their gratitude to Bridget Tabudi and Jacques Bothma from Discovery, who helped
to make the event possible. During the proceedings of the day, Prof. Anette Combrink addressed the crowd. A special memorial ceremony saw boats carrying cancer fighters, survivors and their supporters paddling to the center of the dam as the audience scattered flowers into the water. A moment of silence was held to pay tribute to all of those affected by cancer and to those who have lost the battle. “It was one of the most incredible and moving experiences I have ever had. At a stage, everywhere I looked people were overcome with emotion, their eyes filled with tears. An almost divine at-
mosphere surrounded the dam. The cancer ceremony was most certainly the highlight of the day,” says Roland Goldberg, Public Relations Officer of The Potch Mooi Rotary. The day was a monumental success and the Rotarians are already planning next year’s event. Teams who would like to participate in next year’s races should reserve a place as soon as possible as there is limited availability. Kindly contact Johnny Ford (082 804 7835) or Danie De Villiers (072 500 0031) or email them at potchmooidbf@gmail.com to reserve a place for your team at the 2016 Dragon Boat Festival.

Boemelaars is lief vir vioolmusiek ¢¢ SANDRA SWANEPOEL
O
Daarom moet mens jonk begin.”
Op ‘n vraag wie sy beste student was, lag hy lekker: “My vrou!
Pa Piet is wêreldwyd ‘n baie bekende violis.

he Huis Hebron Upliftment Center, is hosting its annual Christmas Fair this Saturday, 31 October, at their premises out on the N12. It promises to be a fun-filled day with great entertainment and activities where families can come together and spend quality time with their loved ones. It is also a fundraising event for Huis Hebron to improve their facilities. “The event has expanded greatly since its start and we will be having a lot more activities than in previous years,” explains Lynette Bosch, a volunteer social worker. The day will kick off with a cycle challenge at 08:00 and a scenic 2.5 km ‘fun walk’ through their farm’s plantations. There will also be a strong man competition, quad biking trails and a photo booth to capture the day’s special moments. Food will be plentiful and residents of the home will be preparing various delectable treats. Bouwer Bosch from the popular local band ‘Straatligkinders’ will be performing and his fiancé, Leandie du Randt (from the popular TV show ‘Binnelanders’) will address the guests. A favorite amongst guests each year is the ‘White elephant table’ where the community donates articles they no longer need. Entrance to this festive event is simply a can of food - as a donation towards the home. For more information kindly contact Huis Hebron at HebronPotch@gmail.com or Lynette at 071 378 2659 . For the map to Huis Hebron visit the North West Independent’s Facebook page.

epending on which media you subscribed to in the past week, you would have either seen images of wanton destruction by students, nationwide and feared for our lives and our future, or you would have seen goosebump-raising pictures of students holding hands, protesting peacefully, engaging with their communities. With all the furore, the concept of ‘White Privilege’ has gained renewed focus. UCT student, Busi Mjiyakho, had one of her Facebook posts on this subject, go viral and it is with her generous permission that we re-print her simple but striking words, this week. Dear White people: You all have white privilege. This does not mean life was easy or that you (or your parents) did not have to work hard for anything. This also doesn’t mean you don’t have struggles. This also doesn’t mean you are racist. Accepting it also doesn’t mean “you have to give everything back”. It simply means that
SPECIAL EDITORIAL you are now aware of how society has been structured and that you, as a white person, can do things such as walk into a shop without having the security guard follow you. It also means that in any establishment or workplace people automatically assume that you are in charge. It means that having any accent makes you special or sexy, regardless of how bad your English is. It means you have the responsibility to inform other white people of these things so that breaking barriers and fixing the mess that is post-apartheid South Africa [is] much easier. You need to be able to see criminals as criminals and not as black criminals. You need to stop going on and on about how much better life was 20 years ago. You need to accept that this, right here, as bad as it seems, will never be worse than apartheid. You need to stop looking at the current situation we are in now without putting it
into context. You have to accept that this is your mess too and that if you are African you will help fix it. You need to stop following these pages that spread fear about an impending doom. You need to start showing how much you love Africa. You need to learn an African language and see value in it. You need to greet people on the street. You need to stop telling your children what your parents told you. You need to understand why people protest. You need to start living the reality. Dear Black people: You are all disadvantaged, regardless of your family’s income. Apartheid determined where we started off from but it doesn’t have to determine where we end up. You need to stop feeling sorry for yourselves and start capitalising on these policies that white people stay com-
plaining about. You need to realise that imali yeqolo and gogo’s pension is not an income. You need to grab whatever opportunity you have with both hands and never let go. You need to show what black excellence is. You need to show that it is not a “miracle” or a “special case” but a preview of what is to come. You need to work your butt off and land those CEO positions and do your job so well that no one can dismiss it as a mere case of compliance. You need to stand up to racism. You need to respect your elders. You need to stop this fighting amongst yourselves. You need to be able to look at another successful black person and feel nothing else but pride. You need to be able to go back to emafaarm and inspire those that are left behind. You need to do all this without throwing away your culture and your roots. You need to be able to utter your clan names with pride. You need to love your hair. You need to love your skin. You need to love your country. You need to love Africa. You need to love Africans.
Rooibos can help you shed over a kilo a month One of the best-kept weight-loss secrets could already be in your pantry. Celebs swear by it, and research confirms that Rooibos tea is the ideal way to help you slim down this summer. By swapping just one cup of coffee for Rooibos tea every day, you could lose as much as a kilo every month. Most of us load our coffee with sugary syrups, honey, whipped cream, milk and sugar which can add any-
thing from 35 to 250+ calories per cup. And if one considers that the average South African knocks back about four cups of coffee a day, drinking Rooibos instead could lead to a whopping 7 – 14kg shed in a year. Ernest du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council, says the indigenous tea offers dieters a healthy, enjoyable and sustainable way to lose weight.
“Rooibos tea contains no fat or carbohydrates and its weight-loss properties further extends to inhibiting fat-storage hormones within the body. Rooibos’s unique Bioflavonoid and Aspalathin, helps to reduce stress hormones that trigger hunger and fat storage, typically associated with high blood pressure, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, insulin resis-
tance and Type 2 diabetes. In a nutshell, Rooibos tea can prevent the body from storing and even forming new fat cells. “Drinking Rooibos tea instead of a regular 35+ calorie cup of coffee (enjoyed with milk and a spoonful of sugar) or a 100+ calorie carbonated drink will automatically reduce your calorie intake.” 26 Dr James Moroka Street (Lombard street), Shop nr 13, Potchefstroom (previous Kotwal’s )

Courage had audience in tears ¢¢ SANDRA SWANEPOEL
Mothers, daughters and grandmothers were treated to a stylish high tea at Girls’ High school on Saturday, 24 October. Crisp white tablecloths with lace overlays, Proteas and delicious confectionary greeted the elegant ladies when they arrived – each table looking different, but themed. Piano recitals and a lucky draw with lots of prizes were on the menu, but the cherry on the top was the guest speaker: Santi Brits, local business woman and rape victim. The
story of Santi’s past six year journey, which started after she was raped twice in her family home, had the attendees in tears. Her positive, fighting attitude made all the difference to her recovery. She told the audience with honesty how she also wanted to give up and sit in a corner, but how she managed to eventually be in court and see the perpetrator get a life sentence. Mrs Meyer, the school principal, mentioned in her closing that she learned a lot from the courage of Santi and will, in future, look though new eyes at triumphs like hers.

Die begeleidingsmusiek was met “back-
Ander treffers was Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, Que Sera Sera (What Will Be), Old Man River, Something Stupid, Sweet Caroline, Cottonfields en Save the last Dance For Me.

Meg Security: event specialists that appreciate Murphy’s Law
S
pecial event security management is a critical part of successful event planning. Event managers do not always place sufficient emphasis on security considerations when developing their plans, and such a failure can have disastrous results. Usually, special events involve large crowds that can be expected to create a range of security exposures. These events happen in sports arenas, university or college campuses, corporate facilities, office complexes, art galleries, music halls and other locations. These events take place on both private and public property and so law enforcement and public officials often
have unique responsibilities. Facilities that host special events may or may not have a security plan to deal with normal, daily activities. For special events, a special security programme must be implemented to control the crowds and avoid panic in the event of an emergency. Experienced special event security professionals appreciate Murphy’s Law: ‘Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong!’ Experienced professionals recognise that the best way to manage seemingly ‘random’ events is through good planning, excellent training and drills.
Event planning begins with a clear understanding of the audience. You must think of the audience as people that you are inviting in and hosting. By ‘inviting’ them into your facility, you have a duty to provide reasonable measures of security and safety. These people are your guests and you must make accommodations for their safety. There are a number of steps that you can take that can help staff be ready for a range of contingencies. Studies show that staff members are more able to deal with a crisis if they have been drilled on such problems. Meg Security has through years of experience become experts
in this. Reducing risks and liability exposures is an important consideration in special event planning. By successfully managing risks, planners can not only achieve a safe event, but they can substantially reduce their liability exposure. Security professionals should be involved in the planning process as early as possible. A number of principles are clear: * Prepare a plan; * Write understandable procedures; * Train, train and train. Why then take the risk yourself? Get the experts to help. Meg Security are these experts!

See maths? Yes, you can!
T
his is according to Claudia van der Nest, the local Cmaths representative. She started with the programme in 2014 in Potchefstroom and with more than 50 children between the ages of 3 and 11 learning this unique Japanese calculating method, she promises that you will see maths in a different way for the rest of your life. Cmaths is an acronym for Calculating Mental Arithmetic Tuition by making use of a Japanese Soroban. In this program children are taught to develop both their right and left brain capabilities. It enables learners to “see” “C” Maths. It teaches children to concentrate and it aims to create a love of maths: the most important thing is that you have to start with this technique before the age of 11. On the weekend of 18 October four students of Potchefstroom participated in the North West Regional Championships for Cmaths that were held in Rustenburg. A total of 170 children attended the competition from Rustenburg, Brits, Hartebeespoort, Zeerust and Potchefstroom.

POTCH IMPRESSIONS By Netta Drift
All aboard the Nelson Express Those needing a ride in and around town can now make use of Potchefstroom’s newest cab service, Nelson Express. Nelson Khene, the enterprising young man who saw a need for such a service has been overwhelmed by the support residents have shown him. “I wasn’t planning on starting a transport service, but decided to start a business that gave a service that I also wished I could use,” Nelson explains. Soft-spoken and very likable, he runs the cab service while studying music at NWU-PUK. Most of his clients call on his services repeatedly and he counts the elderly as a large part of his clientele. The support Potchefstroom residents are showing Nelson Express goes beyond mere business transactions. Nelson received a spare-wheel for one of his vehicles through a request on the Potchefstroom Facebook page. “I love my work, because I love giving. I don’t regret starting this business. Not because I love transport, but because it gives me an opportunity to serve. I see my studies in music and my cab service not just as a means to make a living, but a way to serve and benefit others as well.” Most of the clients making use of Nelson Express are white and Nelson has found Potchefstroom to be more open and accommodating than portrayed. “You often hear some people don’t want to use services from black people because of pride and a lack of trust. They feel embarrassed to be helped by a black person, but not in Potch. And if there are people like that: they can also change if we start to trust each other.” He feels that his services are bridging a gap between races in the town. “Many people contact me just to have a chat. I also don’t

believe in keeping quiet while transporting my clients; we share our life stories with each other.” In future Nelson plans on extending his cab service while completing his degree. “I would welcome a business partner or sponsor to help me grow the business, because Potch really needs it. Often I have to turn clients down because I have a full schedule for the day.” Although his initial plan was to provide transport around Potchefstroom only, many clients are requesting transport to nearby towns and the service has expanded to include their needs. Weekends and evenings are peak business times for Nelson Express and he recommends potential clients make bookings in advance. “Unless you’re having an emergency, it is better to book a day before you need my help.” The service is priced at R25/4km and longer trips are quoted separately. Nelson Express can be contacted on Facebook.

Hanneké - the ‘best of the best’ ¢¢ LYNDLE HAAGNER
H
anneké Dannhauser is no longer just Potch’s warrior princess but now a world champion. Hanneké competed in the intense and thrilling Obstacle Course Race World Championships 2015 - the biggest obstacle course event in the world. She was one of the seven athletes chosen as part of team Jeep SA to represent South Africa at the ORC World Champs that took place in Cincinnati, USA. Hanneké’s first event was the OCR Warrior ‘Best of the Best’ Championship for which she was nominated. This is an immense honour as only 24 athletes, from across the globe were invited to compete in this event. Hanneké did South Africa proud and walked away as the winner. Saturday saw Hanneké competing in her most important event: The Elite Women. This 8.5mile (13.7km) course consisted of 52 gruelling obstacles set along a mountainous slope with never-ending hills. She had to brave extremely harsh weather conditions during the race, with temperatures plummeting below freezing point. “Halfway through the race we were given hypothermia blankets to run with,” says Hanneké. She finished in an impressive 6th place. “It was really a great opportunity where you could truly test yourself against the best in the world,” she says. There was also an unofficial event later that day which she won and was crowned ‘Master of the Rig’ in the female category. On Sunday, the final day of the championships, the South African team consisting of Dominique D’Oliveira, Trish Bahlmann and Hanneké participated in the Women’s Elite Teams event. There were three legs in the race: strength, obstacles and running. Hanneké completed the strength leg of the race, Trish the running and Dominique the obstacles.
Hanneké Dannhauser competed in the Obstacle Course Race World Championships where she won the OCR Warrior ‘Best of the Best’ race. She was also part of the SA team that placed third in the Women’s Elite Teams event.
This South African team was placed third and were awarded bronze medals. Hanneké, who is currently sponsored by USN, Broll, Liquidsalt and Fitchef, is already back in the country and is busy training for the last Jeep Warrior Race of the year which
will be taking place on 22 November. This final event is the most important event of the year as the overall series winner of the Jeep Warrior Race 2015 will be announced. So far Hanneké is placed first overall, and we wish her the best of luck for the day.
“I have a dream of bringing obstacle course adventure training to Potchefstroom, incorporating other sports such as mountain biking as well,” she explains. Although no definite plans are in place yet, keep an eye on the NWI for any further developments.
The festival was aimed at primary schools and coaches who are involved in the KFC Mini Cricket programme in the Province.“The purpose of the event is to assess the standard of cricket in the programme and also to improve it with the coaching that takes place during the festival,” says event organiser and North West Cricket’s Mini Cricket coordinator – Retsedisitsoe “Rico” Ramokhethi. Also in attendance was, KFC Mini Cricket representative from Playmakers (the agency
responsible for the branding and marketing sponsorship management of the programme), Tegan Mill and David Mokopanele, Cricket South Africa’s mass participation manager. The main idea is for the kids to have fun and be active while building new friendships. It also gives coaches the opportunity to identify talent and to see the kids coming through the programme play at provincial level and eventually play for the “Proteas”, said David. The programme gets bigger every year with
more and more schools boarding the Mini Cricket ship. Amongst this year’s first timers, was Laer Skool Delarayville. Etienne Venter, a teacher and Mini Cricket coach at the school said that, in the world of computers and video games, this programme is very important as it keeps kids active while enjoying the outdoors. North West Cricket invites all schools interested in becoming part of the programme, to contact: Rico on 018 294 6666
