Die groot vergeet: Het God ook Alzheimers? ¢¢ SANDRA SWANEPOEL

A

They say no two snowflakes are alike; well no two cases of dementia are alike either. This disease affects everyone differently, including families.” Vlak 6 is veel erger.

My ma het Alzheimer’s. Wanneer ek by haar kuier (ek bely, te min) is woorde min.

Dan soen sy my, sommer ‘n paar keer. Ons is in mekaar se teenwoordigheid. Woorde is nie meer nodig nie. Sy is my ma, ek is lief vir haar en ek weet sy is

lief vir my. Dit is vir my duister. Want my Moeder het my lief, onvoorwaardelik.

Anger boils over ¢¢ MARISKA NEL

L

ast Friday residents of Ikageng took to the streets in protest against the amalgamation of the Tlokwe and Ventersdorp local mu nicipalities. The march started in Ikageng and led the protesters into Potchefstroom via the N12. The protesters gathered in front of the Dan Tloome Complex where they read a memoran dum regarding their grievances. Several people in the crowd said they were furious about the merger. “Why should our tax money go to the Venters dorp municipality, which is already bankrupt?” asked an angry protester. “Why do we need to suffer, to live without water and sanitation while our leaders live in nice houses and drive expen sive cars?” In a press statement Itumeleng Mosala, Re gional Chairperson of the African National Con gress, stated that the protest on Friday was history repeating itself: “A group of unruly in dividuals went on a rampage, trashing the streets under the pretext of demonstrating against the merger with Ventersdorp municipality.” He blamed the voilent protest on the Demo cratic Alliance claiming the party is “under the illusion that it is capable of governing Tlokwe”. Residents in town were shocked by the display of anger and frustration as the crowd moved towards the municipal buildings where they threatened to burn the Dan Tloome Complex. Road signs were destroyed and smoke from burning tyres filled the streets.

Louwrens Snyman, owner of Wohnen Paints in Potchefstroom described the march as very disruptive. “The women were scared and I wanted to protect them. The moment the shock grenade went off, I realised we have to lock the store, but then a rock came through our window,” he said. It will cost R 5 000 to repair the damage. Louwrens also said although he isn’t happy about the amalgamation this protest was destructive, and now “we have to pay for it”. On Saterday the municipal building in Ven tersdorp was set alight. According to Paul Ramalomaloko, spokesperson for the Northwest Police departement, a separate case of arson is being investigated and this is not seen as part of the protest in Potchefstroom on Friday. Ramalomaloko said although the police had to use rubber bullets and stun grenades to contain the crowd, the only injury reported was that of an Ikageng resident who was allegedly attacted by the protesters on his way to work. The police arrested three people in Ikageng and another two in Potchefstroom. These “leaders of the protest” have been charged with public violence and will soon appear in court. Another 13 protesters were also arrested on the same charges. Ramalomaloko said that no formal request for another protest was made, but police intelligence are working hard and Tlokwe residents can be assured that everything possible is being done to ensure their safety. “We will keep you informed regarding any further developments,” said Ramalomaloko.

In Ikageng the rampage was much more destructive than in town. Burnt tyres, street signs, rocks and even an old fridge littered the streets. PHOTO: MARISKA NEL

Plaaskuierfees soos min ¢¢ HENNIE BASSON

Heelal-kompetisie in Belarus aangewys is as Mev. Integriteit.

Anyone for mogodu or koko? ¢¢ LYNDLE HAAGNER

S

ince its opening two weeks ago Dipitseng Caterers have brought back traditional, homemade, African cuisine to many Potchefstroom locals. “I wanted to introduce a new idea to the town. Usually one will only find this type of food when you’re at home,” says owner Refiloe Masiteng. She and her family have run a successful catering business for many years and decided to branch out and open a res taurant too. This new venture has been widely supported by the com munity and she has been incredibly busy – often having to rush back into the kitchen “to fill the pots” to meet the growing daily demand. “For people who are at work and can’t go home to eat a nutritious meal, we are creating that. Everything we sell is made fresh, daily.” Dipitseng Caterer’s offer a wide variety of authentic dishes and the menu changes daily. “I like to surprise patrons each time they walk through our doors,” she says. A few of their popular dishes are tlhakwana (ox/pork trotters), mogodu (tripe), koko (chicken); makgwafu; chicken stew, beef stew, dumplings, ting (fermented sorghum), morogo (spinach), wors, samp, and of course bunny chow. “We want to bring back the memory of home and also invite people of all cultures to come and taste the traditional African cuisine,” says Refiloe. North West Independent and Kreativmedia Hub employ ees enjoyed a special Heritage lunch at Dipitseng last Friday where they were introduced to numerous dishes such as ‘Runaways’ (chicken feet), tripe, chicken livers, trotters and bunny chow. They were excited about trying the new dishes and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. On the 24th September Dipitseng will be having their of ficial launch in celebration of Heritage Day. Guests that will be attending the event can expect an array of popular African dishes, served as a buffet-style dinner. Tickets are available at R50 per person and you can buy your tickets directly from Refiloe. Guests can expect mopani worms, “smileys” (sheep’s head), mogodu (tripe), dumplings, ting, and genuine home brewed beer are but a few dishes that Refiloe has planned for the evening. You can order your tickets directly from her at 078 554 2298.

Township pub-crawl ’n heerlike uitstappie ¢¢ STEFAN VAN ZYL

Platinum Stars shine ¢¢ MOTHUSI MAKGOANE

With territorial advantage and a partisan crowd in their favour, Jomo Cosmos let it slip when they narrowly lost 2 – 1 to a determined Platinum Stars at Potchefstroom’s Olen Park Stadium last Saturday. Stars sprung into an early 2 – 0 lead in the first half through goals from Robert N’gambi and Eleazor Rodgers. Stars were punished for infringement, and Dumiso Mabena was sent off, thus reduced the Phokeng giants to 10 – man. Ezenkosi, as Cosmos is affectionately known, pilled-up pressure and pulled a goal back through Cheslyn Jampies. Cosmos camped in the Stars goal area but their strik ers fluffed scoring chances and ballooned balls in front of goal. The Phokeng outfit salvaged 3 points. Despite salvaging valuable points, Cosmos spokesperson, Abbey Selebano is very excited and confident about the team’s performance. “We played very well but ran out of luck. The boys tried hard but it was not our lucky day,” said Selebano. When asked about poor attendance, Sele bano added: “Our plans are in place to embark on road shows around Potchefstroom and Dr. Kenneth Kaunda region to sell the Jomo Cosmos brand.”
