Gimmie se onderwysers is tops! • Brief ontsluit groot prys vir Juffrou (C)onnie Wickus Zerwick ’n Brief wat die graad 11-leerder Louise-Mari Muller aan Juffrou Connie Pretorius geskryf het, het nasionaal aandag getrek. Dié brief is gekies uit sowat 30 000 inskrywings in ’n kompetisie waarin leerders die geleentheid gekry het om te sê waarom ’n spesiale onderwyser ’n verskil in hul lewens maak. Louise-Mari het deelgeneem aan die jaarlikse Woolworths-kompetisie waarin sy 200 woorde geskryf het oor Juffrou Connie. Sy is daarna as een van agt finaliste in die land gekies. Juffrou Connie is saam met die sewe ander finaliste na Kaapstad vir onderhoude wat deur ’n paneel van ses bekende mense gevoer is - onder andere Peter Twine, die bestuurder van Woolworths. Die wenners is by ’n glansryke geleentheid in Kaapstad aangekondig. Juffrou Connie se tweede plek het haar ’n skootrekenaar, R5 000 vir die skool, R21 000 se koopbewyse vir haarself en ’n tablet vir Louise-Mari besorg. Gimmies is ongelooflik trots op Juffrou Connie. Die kompetisie was weer ’n bewys van die kaliber onnies wat by Potchefstroom- Gimnasium werk.
Die brief aan Woolworths My Teacher Ms Connie Pretorius has created a safe haven for me, in the incredible world of art, keeping the perfect balance between expressing myself, and letting life itself once more inspire me to live. I suffer from a condition called Ankylosing spondylitis, in which my spine fuses together, and will eventually start to crumble. I have now been on chemotherapy for a year. Each day was a day filled with reality closing in on me, with no form of escape from my thoughts and pain. And yet, somehow through the confinement of my illness, I found my sweet
escape through the world of art. A world which I would never have discovered without my Art teacher and as it turned out art therapist, Ms Connie Pretorius. She has taught me to put all my pain or whatever emotions I might be experiencing onto a canvas, or mere piece of paper. She has guided me to express myself, and created a space where not only me, but all her learners can feel safe and inspired. She is eternally available and taught me the absolute healing properties of Woollies Chai tea in times of trouble.

We i nspire those around us to celebrate, we manifest visual mirrors to the light, d ivinity and potential of each v iewer.”

Engels blink uit met NTA-toekennings Jacques Jacobs Die Engelse Departement spog met twee NTA-kandidate (National Teaching Awards), onderskeidelik in 2013 en 2014. Juffroue Madeleine Gerber en Rosemary Fouché het altwee uit die stryd getree as Tlokwe-area- wenners asook as Dr. Kenneth Kaunda-streekwenners. Juffrou Madeleine het in 2013 derde gekom in Noordwes en Juffrou Rosemary het in 2014 tweede gekom. Beide was first timers in die kompetisie. As in ag geneem word dat die wenners sonder uitsondering tweede en derde jaar deelnemers was, is ons twee “soutie-Juffrouens” se prestasie iets om op trots te wees.
